i
mostly didn't keep a journal this trip. first time ever - travelling & writing
were
always joined at the hip in my guide book:) i say 'mostly'
because i did start keeping it again for the last week after reading
Bruce Northam's 'Travel Canons'
in a book of fifty
travellers' tales i'd taken with me. [In Search of
Adventure' published by
Consortium of Collective Conciousness]
just after i'd
been most impressed by a canon on dancing and, basically, how to
naturally find sexual intimacy wherever you happen to be, came
this one called 'Keep
A Journal'!
suddenly am wondering why i didn't keep one.
and that's when i recorded this moroccan memory:
the
funniest saddest sight i registered in morocco was one night, up on the
Hadj's roof, watching 2
great white
seagulls swooping in perfect geometric formation along the strong
atlantic ocean winds
above me and then realising that the leader was actually a plastic
bag. very funny and sad.
:(
it's
started to haunt me actually, the vision, since i got back. i
think it comes from very Deep.
it seems to sum up where we are
at. interestingly, while i interpreted it as a symbol
of
Nature on the Run, being led astray and confused, others have taken it
as Nature
Triumphant; it's
whether you decide the gull was fooled (wanted to shag it - it was
mating season - or follow it in formation to europe for the
cooler summer.)
or it was playing with such a plastic bag clever
enough to have
found the
right
vortex to be able to fly like a bird. (which never occurred to
me). praps it was seeing the bag off its territory? how you
interpret it could even
uncover your basic attitude to where we are at right now.
someone care
to have a go at actualising the image? you might need an extra
bird to make it work in 2 dimensions.

gettit?
i return from mid-20th century morocco (their
Sixties, the inevitable and, yes, unstoppable dissolution of the
traditional) to what are obviously
the early stages of Peak Oil,
long predicted and anticipated. knowing what we Uppies have known
for so long, it seems amazing how people just don't seem to 'gettit' - like david cameron
speaks about gordon brown.
praps my absence throws it into relief but it seems the whole world now
knows that Something's happening;
they just dunno what it is; but they're starting to look beyond the
Dinosaur Era for
who might be 'getting it'.
hence Boris is london's new mayor, Obama in yankeeland, Sarkie in
france, all
reaching out for a change. it's early days tho, and the public
still
doesn't know it's going to have to look a lot further than any of them.
obviously, and UTTERLY
UNSURPRISINGLY, the oil is running out! or the demand is
outstripping supply - same thing. petroculture's fast becoming
retroculture. and yes, of course the
greedheads are
trying to make profits on the ropes that are hanging them, but only the
opposite
would be in any way surprising :(
yes, the dawn of the Great planet ReBalancing is well under way, amidst the still-twitching and
still dangerous corpses of the Dinosaur Era; and, more ruthlessly than any market
forces,
it will sweep its way across the
table until everything is even again. no, it won't be pretty. corrections, by definition, seldom are, certainly to those who'd been
profiting from the previous Ugliness.
WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON?!
i hear you ask :)
(it's all starting to happen so fast, right?)
think
of our Current Situation
like this: If the GGP (Gross Global Product) collapses to 50% in the
next 5 years MAXIMUM... THE PLANET
MIGHT HAVE A CHANCE!!!!
put bluntly like that, it's clear
why
no politician can even contemplate it,
let alone publicly SUGGEST
IT. and no 'responsible' voice can report it. THAT's what
responsibility means these days, it's to the people above, not to the people below. and the present elite
(by the fact they're there you KNOW they're compromised!)
are
precisely the very
ones who don't 'gettit'.
NOTHING could be further
from the truth
than the belief among some of my friends&allies that some
conspiracy
at
the top is planning the
whole thing. r u
fuggin' kidding?! did they PLAN to lose the war in
iraq?! did
they PLAN for bush to leave office as the Biggest Schmuck in History?! (as
i predicted from the start) do you need to see them
running around naked in the streets to know
'they' are in a total panic, have notta clue what's happening nor how
to correct or ameliorate it. my judgement is they'd gladly
surrender
everything for house arrest on one of their former privately owned
islands, there to pasture out their remaining years, BUT
THEY'RE
TERRIFIED THAT THINGS HAVE GONE SO FAR THAT THIS, their usual
stratagem, CAN NO LONGER BE
ACTIONED.
somebody tossed out to me the other day that there are many possible
futures. i replied that there are, in fact, only TWO.
either we change in time or we come very close to
extinction. yeah, maybe, ok, you might say, but next you must
consider
this FACT: EVEN IF EVERY SINGLE HUMAN
TRANSFORMED INTO AN ECO SAINT TODAY, IT'S ALREADY TOO LATE TO STOP MANY
UTTERLY GIGANTIC DISASTERS OVER THE NEXT DECADE OR TWO!
THAT is how much we have to change, as individuals, as
cultures, as a planetary civilisation. in fact the change required
to avoid disaster is so colossal
as
to be almost impossible for most people to IMAGINE, let alone seriously
consider. but in their hearts everyone knows exactly how things
should be, can be and must be; the megatripolis
gene lies deeply buried within every one of us, and, as each
further frame of the Holocaust Movie reveals itself, it WILL be
activated and IS being activated. of this i
have NO doubt.

Question 1:
If you knew a woman who was pregnant, who had 8 kids already, three who
were deaf, two who were blind, one mentally retarded, and she had
Syphilis, would you recommend she have an abortion? (Read the next question before
looking at the answer)
Question 2:
It's time to elect a new world leader, and only your vote counts.
Here
are the facts about the three candidates. Who would you vote for?
Candidate A.
Associates with crooked politicians, and consults with
astrologers.
He's had two mistresses. He also chain smokes and drinks 8 to 10
martinis a day.
Candidate B. He was
kicked out of office twice, sleeps until noon, used opium in college
and drinks a quart of whiskey every evening.
Candidate C. He's a
decorated war hero. He's a vegetarian, doesn't smoke, drinks an
occasional beer and never cheated on his wife.
Made your choice?
Candidate A is Franklin
D. Roosevelt.
Candidate B is Winston
Churchill.
Candidate C is Adolph

Oh, and if your answer to the abortion question was YES, you just
killed Beethoven.

Brain's Don't Get 'Older'
They Get 'Wiser'
Sara Resitad-Long/New
York Times
Elders,
forgetting names at a party, tend to think their brainpower's
declining. NOT SO!
- according to a growing number of studies.
The older brain is simply taking in
more data, and trying to sift through a clutter of information, often
to its long-term benefit.
>navigating the InfoGush
i sometimes call it :) it's what the UP! largely attempts to do.
A new edition of a neurology book, “Progress in
Brain Research”, indicates that, while some brains
do deteriorate with age (Alzheimer’s strikes 13% of Americans over 65)
>caused by not having
enough psychedelic or supra-rational experiences.
much of what occurs in the older brain is a gradually widening focus of
attention that makes it more difficult to latch onto just
one fact, like a name or phone number.
>woods and trees come to
mind.
Although that can be frustrating, it is often useful.
“It may be that
distractibility is not, in fact, a bad thing,” said Shelley H.
Carson, a psychology researcher at Harvard whose work was cited in the
book.
“It may increase the
amount of information available to the conscious mind.”
In studies, for example, where
subjects are asked to read passages that are interrupted with
unexpected words or phrases, 60+ adults work much more slowly than
college students. Although the younger brains plow through the
texts
at a consistent speed regardless of what the out-of-place words mean,
older people slow down: and slow down even more
when the words are related to the topic at hand. This actually
indicates that they're not just stumbling over the extra information,
they're taking it in and processing it.
When both groups were later asked
questions for which the out-of-place words might be answers, the older
brains responded much better.
An
author of the review, Lynn Hasher, a professor of psychology at the
University of Toronto and a
senior scientist at the Rotman Research
Institute, says: “For the young
people, it’s as if the distraction never happened.”
>this is so true!
i see it all the time! u young brains think it's attention when
it's actually obsession :)
who the fug CARES what some minor celebrity i can't quite place said
about the issue?!!!
“But for
older adults, because they’ve retained all this extra data, they’re now
suddenly the better problem solvers. They can transfer the
information
they’ve soaked up from one situation to another.”
Such tendencies can yield big
advantages in the real world, where it's not always clear what
information is important, or will become
important. A seemingly irrelevant
point or suggestion in a memo can take on new meaning if the original
plan changes.
>which EVERY plan ALWAYS
does.
Or extra details that stole your attention, like others’ yawning or
chatting, may help you assess the speaker’s real impact.
“A broad attention span may
enable older adults to ultimately know more about a situation and the indirect message of what’s
going on than their younger peers,” Dr. Hasher
said. “We
believe this characteristic may play a significant role in why we think
of older people as wiser.”
Focus on What's Important
Tune
out What's Irrelevant WRONG!! WRONG!!
In
a 2003 study at Harvard, Dr. Carson and other researchers tested
students’ ability to tune out irrelevant information when exposed to a
barrage of stimuli. It turns out that the more creative the student (determined
by a questionnaire on past achievements) the more trouble he or she had
ignoring the unwanted data. A reduced
ability to filter and set priorities contributed
to original thinking, the scientists concluded.
>someone tell the
bizziheads, corporuppies and multitaskers who THINK they're running the
world when it's running them!
Research professor Jacqui Smith,
at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan,
says there's a word for what results when the mind is able to
assimilate data and put it in its proper place - wisdom.
“These findings
are all very consistent with the context we’re building for what wisdom
is,” she said. “If
older people are taking in more information from a situation, and
they’re then able to combine it with their comparatively greater store
of general knowledge, they’re going to have a nice advantage."
>tho they MAY be
elbowed aside by younger brains who THINK they know better :)
UP!
moroccan memory: so much of
Life is under the Law of Accident and beyond our control that an
attitude of acceptance with a minimum of regret or complaint must
be cultivated.
this, however, it seems to me, makes maximum contrast with the areas
which CAN be under our control. our inner reactions, the lies we
tell
ourselves, our blindness to others and so on. and failure
to attempt a conscious and purposeful focus in this area gets about as close to
anything i could ever call a Sin.

WAR CRIMINALS!
FBI files indict
Bush/Cheney Gang, and Accomplices
by
Bill Van Auken
A
370-page Justice US
Department Inspector General’s report released recently
shows that agents of the FBI had
formally opened a “War Crimes”
file, documenting torture they had witnessed at the Guantánamo Bay US prison
camp, before being ordered by the
administration to stop writing their reports.
Human
rights groups and all sane individuals have long insisted that the
actions of the Bush administration - wars of aggression, assassinations,
abduction and detention of civilians without trial and, most repugnant
of all, torture - constitute war crimes
under any legitimate interpretation of long-standing international
statutes and treaties.
To
have this assessment confirmed by the Inspector General of the Justice
Department, the only
senior official there not answerable directly to the White House,
and by agents of the FBI,
an agency not known for its sensitivity to questions of democratic
rights, is an indication of the rampant character of these crimes as
well as the crisis they have engendered within the US government and
America’s ruling elite as a whole.
The
report makes it absolutely clear that
- torture was ordered and planned
in detail at the highest levels of the government - including the White
House, the National Security Council, the Pentagon and the Justice
Department.
- attempts to stop it on legal or pragmatic grounds by individuals
within the government were systematically suppressed, and evidence of
this criminal activity covered up.
There
has been no immediate reaction from the White House on these new
revelations.
“[An FBI Agent] recalled that, at some
point during the interrogation, the military officer ‘put water down’ a
seated detainee’s throat. He said he guessed that the purpose of
the water was to give the detainee the sensation that he was drowning,
so that he would provide the information that the interrogator
wanted. [The agent] stated that the detainee was gagging and
spitting out water. He said he assumed the detainee had trouble breathing.”
“He
was left alone in a cold room known as ‘the freezer,’ where guards
would prevent him from sleeping by putting ice or cold water on him...
He was subjected to sleep deprivation for a period of 70 days by means
of prolonged interrogations, strobe lights, threatening music, forced
intake of water, and forced standing. He was deprived of clothing
by a female interrogator; “Two female
interrogators touched him sexually and made sexual statements to him;
“He
was severely beaten.” In
addition, the document says, he was “led to believe he was
going to be executed, and urinated on himself,” and was told that his
mother and family would be detained and harmed."
According
to the IG report, hundreds
of FBI agents witnessed illegal
acts of torture and abuse against detainee
by CIA,
military and private contractor interrogators..
In
addition, the report cites: several agents who reported instances of
beatings, 30 agents who reported witnessing prolonged shackling of
detainees in stress positions, 70 agents who reported detainees being
subjected to sleep deprivation, 29 agents who had information on the
use of extreme temperatures in order to “break the
detainees’ resolve to resist cooperating” and 50 agents
reporting the use of extended isolation to “wear down a detainee’s resistance.”
In
addition, four agents reported the kicking and beating to death of two
detainees in Afghanistan who had been subjected to prolonged shackling
in a standing position.
"I didn’t think
this could happen in the 21st century"
Murat
Kurnaz, a Turkish citizen born in Germany who was arrested during a
trip to Pakistan in the fall of 2001 and was handed over to US
officials for a $3,000 bounty, testified
via video link to a sparsely attended hearing of the House Foreign
Affairs Committee in the same week
as this report.
While by 2002 the US authorities concluded that Kurnaz had nothing to
do with terrorism, he was imprisoned in
Kandahar, Afghanistan, and finally Guantánamo until
the middle of 2006 and released only because of pressure from the
German government.
“I did nothing
wrong and I was treated like a monster,” he said. He
told how he was subjected to electric shocks, being suspended by his
wrists for hours and subjected to the ‘water treatment,’ in which his
head was stuck into a bucket of water and he was punched in the
stomach, forcing him to inhale the liquid.
>how come no reporter
ever included this detail?!
“I
know others have died from this kind of treatment,” said
Kurnaz. “I
suffered from sleep deprivation, solitary confinement, religious and
sexual humiliations. I was beaten multiple times.”
“There
was no law in Guantánamo,” Kurnaz concluded. “...."I didn’t think this could happen
in the 21st century... I could never have imagined that
this place was created by the United States.”
>goodbye,
dinosaurs. this time forever.
Abu Ghraib No
Aberration
The
inmates at Guantánamo represent barely 1% of those detained at
US prison camps and secret jails run by the military and the CIA in
Iraq, Afghanistan and other points around the world. An estimated
27,000
people are being held without charges, much less trials, many of
them simply having disappeared into Washington’s global gulag.
Some are held on prison ships, others in secret dungeons run jointly by
the CIA and regimes to which it “outsources” detainees, like Egypt,
Jordan and Morocco
>!!!!
where other, cruder forms of torture - being buried alive, given
electric shocks or slashed with scalpels - are employed.
The
report also reconfirms that the revolting Abu Ghraib prison scenes
- naked and hooded men being subjected to torture and sexual
humiliation by US guards - were no aberration. The methods
described in the report - forced nudity, the use of attack dogs in
interrogations, chaining detainees in “stress” positions, leading them
around on dog leashes, draping them in women’s underwear - were
identical to those officially blamed on a “few bad apples” at Abu Ghraib.
Sadistic torture
“orchestrated” from the White House
The
uniformity of abuse at these widely separated facilities is evidence
that the psychopathic and criminal sadism was planned and orchestrated
from the top.
ABC
News revealed last month, top administration officials on the so-called
Principals’ Committee - Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Colin Powell,
George Tenet, Attorney General John Ashcroft and National Security
Council Adviser Condoleezza Rice - conducted detailed discussions on “enhanced
interrogation techniques,” which, according to ABC, “were almost
choreographed - down to the number of times CIA agents could use a
specific tactic.”
The
report establishes that FBI and Justice Department officials advised
the White House National Security Council of their concern that the
practices witnessed by the agents were “gravely damaging
... the rule of law” at Guantánamo. In
the end, however, they were told to back off, and they complied,
thereby becoming accomplices in
this criminality and its cover-up.

Albert
Hoffman, Father of LSD, Cycles Off at 102
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/30/world/europe/30hofmann.html
Albert Hofmann, the
Swiss chemist who gave
the world LSD, the most
powerful psychotropic substance known, died at his
hilltop home near Basel,
Switzerland, on April 29.
He was 102. Dr.
Hofmann first synthesised lysergic
acid diethylamide in 1938
but
only discovered its psychopharmacological effects in 1943 when,
during work
on the ergot fungus,
which grows in rye kernels, he
accidentally ingested what became known to the Hippies as Acid, and to the Ravers
as Aceeeeed.
Most
important to him was the drug’s value as a revelatory aid for
contemplating and understanding what he saw as humanity’s oneness with
nature.
Though Dr.
Hofmann’s work produced other important drugs, it was LSD
that shaped both his career and his spiritual quest.
“Through LSD and my new picture of
reality, I became aware of the wonder of
creation, the magnificence of nature and of the animal and plant
kingdom,”
Dr.
Hofmann told the psychiatrist Stanislav
Grof
during an interview in 1984. “I became very sensitive to what will
happen to all this and all
of us.”
He became
an impassioned
advocate for the environment and argued that LSD could be used to awaken a
deeper awareness of mankind’s
place in nature
and help
curb society’s ultimately self-destructive
degradation of the natural world.

How I Became a Hippy
I must have been about 14, and it was probably in
French class though it might have been History.
We were discussing Beaudelaire
and the Bohemian artists of Paris, and it came as the most deliciously
consciousness-raising shock to me that famous painters, poets
and philosophers [now honoured, feted and TAUGHT IN SCHOOLS!] had
actually led lives of personal/sexual freedom and unbourgeouis abandon
& clutter!
NOBODY HAD EVER MENTIONED THIS TO ME, and to my list of possible adult
careers was added a new one: the social landmarks by which to channel
my
life henceforward now included Lawyer, Teacher, Doctor
and... CareFree-Thinker-Lover!
Seen as such, you must agree (and i still can see it no
other way!) there was really no
choice!
That decision, in 1957 or so, led pretty inevitably to my joining
the Hippy Movement & Spirit in 1965 - after a degree in psychology
and language, and a part-time career as a Beatnik writer.
Ain't that funny? If I'd missed that class.... ? But then,
you might as well say: if Beaudelaire had never existed :)

A Cuppa Coffee a Day
Means the Only Doctor You'll See
Will be in your Local Cafe
Coffee, which has already been linked to a lower risk of Alzheimer's
Disease, may cut the risk of
dementia by blocking the damage cholesterol can inflict on the body,
research suggests.
A vital barrier
between the brain and the main blood supply of rabbits fed a fat-rich
diet was protected in those given a caffeine supplement.
The
"blood brain barrier" is a filter which protects the central nervous
system from potentially harmful chemicals carried around in the rest of
the bloodstream. Other studies have shown that high levels of cholesterol in
the blood can make this barrier "leaky". Alzheimer's researchers suggest this makes the brain
vulnerable to damage which can trigger or contribute to the condition.
The University of North Dakota study used the equivalent to one daily cup of coffee.
After 12 weeks of a high-cholesterol diet, the blood brain
barrier in those given caffeine was far more intact than in those given
no caffeine.
"Caffeine is a
safe and readily available drug and its ability to stabilise the blood
brain barrier means it could have an important part to play in
therapies against neurological disorders."
"This is the best
evidence yet that caffeine equivalent to one cup of coffee a day can
help protect the brain against cholesterol."
>> i await
similar tobacco studies tho, with mob rule rampant, the wait might be
long.

Jimmy Carter:
A Human
Rights Crime
"The
world must stop standing idle
while the people of Gaza are treated with such cruelty"
"The world is
witnessing a terrible human rights crime in Gaza, where a million
and a half human beings are being imprisoned with almost no access to
the outside world. An
entire population is being brutally punished.
In 2006
this gross mistreatment of the Palestinians in Gaza was escalated
dramatically by Israel, with United States backing, after political
candidates representing Hamas
won a majority of seats in the Palestinian Authority
parliament. The election was unanimously judged to be honest
and fair by all international observers.
Israel and
the US refused to accept the right of Palestinians to form a unity
government with Hamas and
Fatah and now, after
internal strife, Hamas alone
controls Gaza.
41 of the 43 victorious Hamas candidates who lived in the West Bank
have been imprisoned by Israel, plus an additional 10 who assumed
positions in the short-lived coalition cabinet.
Regardless
of one's choice in the partisan struggle between Fatah and Hamas within
occupied Palestine, we must remember that economic sanctions and
restrictions on the supply of water, food, electricity and fuel are
causing extreme hardship
among the innocent people in Gaza, about one million of whom are
refugees. Israeli bombs
and missiles periodically strike the area, causing high casualties
among both militants and innocent women and children.
On a
recent trip through the Middle East, I attempted to gain a better
understanding of the crisis. One of my visits was to Sderot, a
community of about 20,000 in southern Israel that is frequently struck
by rockets fired from nearby Gaza. I condemned these attacks as
abominable acts of terrorism, since most of the 13 victims during the
past 7 years have been non-combatants.
Subsequently,
I met with leaders of Hamas -
a delegation from Gaza and the top officials in Damascus. I made
the same condemnation to them, and urged that they declare a unilateral
ceasefire or orchestrate with Israel a mutual agreement to terminate
all military action in and around Gaza for an extended period.
They
responded that such action by them in the past had not been
reciprocated, and they reminded me that Hamas had previously
insisted on a ceasefire throughout Palestine, including Gaza and the
West Bank, which Israel had refused. Hamas then made a public
proposal of a mutual ceasefire restricted to Gaza, which the Israelis
also rejected.
There are
fervent arguments heard on both sides concerning blame for a lack of
peace in the Holy Land. Israel
has occupied and colonised the Palestinian West Bank, which is
approximately a quarter the size of the nation of Israel as recognised
by the international community. Some Israeli religious factions
claim a right to the land on both sides of the Jordan river, others
that their 205 settlements of some 500,000 people are necessary for "security".
All Arab
nations have agreed to
recognise Israel fully if it will comply with key United Nations
resolutions. Hamas has
agreed to accept any negotiated peace settlement between the president
of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, and Israel's prime
minister, Ehud Olmert, provided it is approved in a referendum of the
Palestinian people.
This holds
promise of progress, but despite the brief fanfare and positive
statements at the peace conference last November in Annapolis, the
process has gone backwards. Nine thousand new Israeli housing
units have been announced in Palestine; the number of roadblocks within
the West Bank has increased; and the stranglehold on Gaza has been
tightened.
It is one
thing for other leaders to defer to the US in the crucial peace
negotiations, but the
world must not stand idle while innocent people are treated cruelly.
It is time for strong voices in Europe, the US, Israel and elsewhere to
speak out and condemn the human rights tragedy that has befallen the
Palestinian people."
