BREAKING NEWS

Bush Names Wolfowitz al-Qaeda President - Hopes to Undermine Terror Network

Washington: In a bold move to undermine the international terror network, President George W. Bush today named former deputy defence secretary and World Bank president Paul Wolfowitz to be the new president of al-Qaeda.

Mr. Wolfowitz, who has no experience running an international terror organisation, struck many Washington insiders as an unlikely choice for the al-Qaeda job.

But in a White House ceremony introducing his nominee for the top terror post, President Bush indicated that Mr. Wolfowitz's role in planning the war in Iraq and bringing scandal to the World Bank showed that he was "just the man" to bring chaos and disorder to al- Qaeda.

"I've seen Paul Wolfowitz in action," said Mr. Bush, a beaming Mr. Wolfowitz at his side. "If anyone can mess up al-Qaeda, it's this guy."

Several key details in the president's plan still need to be worked out, such as how exactly Mr. Wolfowitz will infiltrate al-Qaeda and rise to the top position in its ranks.

"Al-Qaeda closely screens all of its top officers," said Hassan El- Medfaii, head of the terror network's human resources department. "It's not like the Defence Department or the World Bank."

Even if he ascends to its top post, it remains to be seen whether Mr. Wolfowitz will be happy at al-Qaeda, according to Professor Davis Logsdon, chairman of the Wolfowitz Studies Department at the University of Minnesota.

"Al-Qaeda is not like the World Bank," Professor Logsdon said. "For one thing, it's much harder to meet girls there."

_______,,,,_{ô¿ô}_,,,,_fraser_

i was booked to speak in the FUTURE OF FESTIVALS at the Sunrise Festival this weekend until i realised it clashed with the zippy picnic and i couldn’t go. the fact that getting my ally Jaunty in (the dog) was a grey area was another reason to make me change my mind. i’d been intending to smuggle Jaunty onto the stage and then say this:

I simply cannot imagine future festivals without dog. dog was invited into human community at the very beginning; indeed i would maintain that we would not be at our present level of civilisation without the peace of mind and early warning system dog provided.

i loathe the idea that festivals can only spread by self-emasculating along the way. we MUST find the right way forward or we shall end up with yuppie jamborees, whether it’s by insisting all dogs wear muzzles or they get licensed at 24 hour test camps before being allowed in.

banning dogs automatically, as is happening now, is just avoiding a no doubt complex issue, while being as crazy, schizophrenic and unbalanced (see Gurdjieff below) as legalising pot while illegalising tobacco. does nothing ever really change?

“Knowledge which is not in accordance with Being cannot be large enough for, or sufficiently suited to, man’s real needs. It will always be a knowledge of one thing together with ignorance of another; a knowledge of the detail without a knowledge of the whole; a knowledge of the form without a knowledge of the essence.” Gurdjieff.

UK Upper Classes Go Raving Mad

"Raves can be just as romantic as flower shows"

Princess Michael of Kent's daughter, Lady Gabriella Windsor, declared Britain's debutante season over last week, suggesting that the modern high society lady should ditch garden parties and balls for Ibiza clubbing and music festivals like Burning Man instead.

"Raves can be just as romantic as flower shows," Lady Gabriella decreed in top people's magazine Country Life. "The Earl and Countess of Mornington courted at Space in Ibiza,' she pointed out.

Her ladyship also revealed that 'the hardest-core partiers' now do America's Burning Man ('there's a group called Pink Pussy, which is all the Euro toffs in stripper outfits', she said) and suggested 'a lot of the smaller festivals have gained more momentum as a result of Glastonbury losing its edge."

Glade Festival organiser Nick Ladd, who’s looking after the alternative dance area at Glastonbury, was not so sure, however.

"I think its fair to say that since the super-fence went up the crowd at Glastonbury has changed; it now consists largely of people who can afford 130 quid for a ticket for a start whereas before 60,000 skint nutters would be over the fence and getting' hammered on Diamond White (cider) at the Stone Circle and creating a very special kind of chaos."

We Should Back Chávez

If Channel 4 aided a coup against the UK government

that resulted in civil unrest and death,

would anyone be supporting the renewal of its licence?

Colin Burgon, Labour MP for Elmet.

Neoconservative forces, via compliant media outlets and Christian right groupings within the European parliament, are preparing their latest attack on Hugo Chávez and the government of Venezuela. The latest focus of the campaign is the decision of Venezuela's broadcasting authorities not to renew the licence of the private television channel RCTV. The anti-Chávez apparatus once again presents a test for Foreign Office ministers.

Washington's outriders characterise the decision as an affront to freedom of speech, yet the facts speak in louder tones. Over 80% of Venezuelan television and radio outlets are privately owned; this excludes a widely available number of cable and satellite television networks. Of this 80%, significant sections are owned by corporate groups. According to a recent New York Times editorial, this has led to a situation in which "even the best news outlets tend to be openly ideological... so the owners' views can permeate reporting".

Almost all Venezuelan newspapers remain in private hands.

  • The press is free to report, and express opinions, without government interference.
  • Most do so with considerable brio on a daily basis.
  • No media outlet has encountered licensing problems for the expression of political views.
  • No journalist has been imprisoned or punished for report or comment.

In RCTV's case, the broadcaster failed to meet basic public-interest standards. The criterion for this assessment is similar to that used by the US Federal Communications Commission. RCTV will be free to broadcast via cable and satellite, which are available across the country.

In the UK, if Channel 4 aided an attempted coup against the government that resulted in civil unrest and even death, would anyone be supporting the renewal of its licence? RCTV has lost its licence because its wealthy owners slanted news coverage to provide support to the April 2002 coup against Chávez and the elected government.

As the coup failed and Venezuelans questioned Chavez’s "resignation", RCTV prohibited correspondents from airing these developments.

Fighting The Washington Consensus

So what hope that our representatives in the EU might withstand rightwing pressure and argue against a discriminatory move against Venezuela at a meeting in Strasbourg next week? If the Foreign Office's public strategy document Latin America to 2020 is anything to go by, not very much.

Lord Triesman, the document's main author and a Foreign Office minister, outlines an adherence to free-market liberalism and singularly defined democracy as the prerequisites for UK engagement in Latin America. The document shows our government remains committed to the neo-liberal model as a means of tackling the highest levels of social inequality in the world. However, anyone interested in nations such as Venezuela or Bolivia can see that the "Washington consensus" trade and aid packages have failed the most desperate people of those nations.

It is not too late for a Labour government to engage with those who wish to achieve justice for their peoples. Events in Strasbourg next week provide an opportunity for the UK government to show reason and goodwill.

the single biggest israeli lie,
parroted for decades by every israel-supporter,
is that the surrounding arab states attacked first.

i swallowed it too (though wondering in the back of my mind)
but today i found this New York Times quote from
a Prime Minister
Menachem Begin speech in 1982:

"In June, 1967, we had a choice.  The Egyptian Army concentrations in the Sinai approaches do not prove that President Nasser was really about to attack us.  We must be honest with ourselves.  We decided to attack him."

there was a whole list of such quotes actually:

In February, 1968, Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin told French newspaper Le Monde: "I do not believe Nasser wanted war.  The two divisions which he sent into Sinai on May 14 would not have been enough to unleash an offence against Israel.  He knew it and we knew it."

but, israel-supporters will insist (at least until the evidence shuts their lying mouths tho without embarrassment) is that it was to pre-empt a possible attack.  right?  wrong:

"16 years of planning had gone into those initial 8 minutes. We lived with the plan, we slept on the plan, we ate the plan.  Constantly we perfected it."  General Mordechai Hod, the actual Commander of the Israeli Air Force during the Six-Day War.  1978.

pretty definitive stuff then.  israel always intended to spread itself around the area.  for its own security of course, oh why in goddess’ name do i STILL fall for this lying self-serving shit!?  “plucky little israel my sacred ass!

but you can't blame poor defenceless little zillion-dollar-armed israel from worrying about it, right?  wrong!

General Haim Barlev, Israeli Defence Forces Chief, told Ma'ariv in April, 1972: "We were not threatened with genocide on the eve of the six-day war, and we had never even thought of such a possibility."
up!

and while we’re on the subject of LIES, here’s a gigantic GOVERNMENT LIE that

  1. bummed a whole generation
  2. kikked a budding green movement in the gonads
  3. very possibly doomed our planet to extinction by postponing until today the radical change in western behaviour which the victims advocated AND embodied.

The FAKE LSD-Chromosome Damage SCARE

In 1967, at the very height of world-changing Hippy culture, Science mag published an article stating that LSD caused chromosome breakage.

"By evening, the charge that LSD could break chromosomes was in all the nation's media." Peter Stafford: ‘Psychedelics Encyclopedia.’

"THE HIDDEN EVILS OF LSD", Saturday Evening Post, Aug 12, 1967.

But the entire story was basically a government-funded scam based on the examination of a single patient!!

For the next 5 years the masses, who had been loving and increasingly sharing the “new” “young” views of the hippy generation (PRO PEACE, PRO PLANET, PRO SPIRIT, PRO SEX etc who could be against it?!), was bombarded with article after article describing the link between LSD and chromosomal damage, both in vitro and in users and their offspring.

These (incorrect & badly researched) articles appeared first in respected peer-reviewed journals, to be blown to horrific proportions by the popular media, leading to sensational articles decrying the mutations that would be unleashed on future generations.

>> they couldn’t find any current problems, see?

"NEW RESEARCH FINDS LSD IS CAUSING GENETIC DAMAGE THAT POSES A THREAT OF HAVOC NOW AND APPALLING ABNORMALITIES FOR GENERATIONS YET UNBORN" is a typical example.

Can you imagine how every trusting hippy whose life had been radically enhanced by acid was made to feel?! Of course a few independent souls smelled a rat, but it was ‘Science’ after all!

By the mid-1970s, of course, the tide had turned and the scientific literature generally supported the revised opinion that LSD does NOT cause chromosomal breakage OR birth defects.

>> guess what. it wasn’t all over the front pages of the media.

How could such an issue progress as far as it did?! With the authorities and authoritarian types friendly to reports of negative consequences of LSD use, a litany of elementary scientific and research errors were ignored by the journals that published the findings. And it wasn't until enough research could be conducted to counteract the initial momentum that saner opinions, and better science, prevailed.

>> which government figures and poodle university scientists have blood, psychotic breakdowns and depressions on their hands has STILL not been identified. to say nothing of the terrible price to the planet!

[Extracted remix from Earth Erowid's Albert Hofmann's Collection of LSD and Psilocybin-Related Papers. The Albert Hofmann Collection contains nearly 70 articles on this topic, an excellent example of the scientific and cultural moral panic that took place in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

but you don’t have to look into some ancient past to find huge lies. here’s something from last week’s Guardian that got me wondering....

Britain’s GuardianNewspaper Promotes

Bush War Propaganda Against Iran

For the Guardian to simply broadcast the allegations below in a sensationalist front-page splash is a gross abdication of editorial responsibility, particularly given its reputation as a critic of the Iraq war and an opponent of military hostilities against Iran.

Yet the only attempt to question an unidentified US military spokesman‘s entirely unsubstantiated claims is a pro-forma sentence in the final paragraph: “Iranian officials flatly deny US and British allegations of involvement in internal violence in Iraq.”

by Chris Marsden

The May 22 Guardian front page offered a propaganda conduit for the Bush administration to provide pre-emptive justification for an escalation of the US military “surge” in Iraq and possible military action against Iran.

Under the headline, “IRAN’S SECRET PLAN FOR SUMMER OFFENSIVE TO FORCE US OUT OF IRAQ,” the newspaper printed almost without qualification statements by an anonymous “senior US official in Baghdad”. With no other source cited and no evidence asked for, the Guardian reported,

“Iran is secretly forging ties with al-Qaeda elements and Sunni Arab militias in Iraq in preparation for a summer showdown with coalition forces intended to tip a wavering US Congress into voting for full military withdrawal, US officials say.”

The anonymous official then states, “Iran is fighting a proxy war in Iraq and it’s a very dangerous course for them to be following. They are already committing daily acts of war against US and British forces.

>> oh yes? evidence? fotos?

He continues, “They [Iran] are behind a lot of high-profile attacks meant to undermine US will and British will, such as the rocket attacks on Basra palace and the Green Zone. The attacks are directed by the Revolutionary Guard who are connected right to the top [of the Iranian government].”

The Guardian article, authored by Simon Tisdall, further suggests there’s a link between Iranian foreign policy aims and Democratic-controlled Congress’s criticisms of US Iraq war policy, thereby echoing White House smears that war critics are aiding and abetting “terrorist” organisations.

There is a great deal riding on Bush attempts to portray all opposition to its Iraq policy as a capitulation to Iran. Tisdall acknowledges that “Washington analysts and commentators predict that Gen Petraeus’s report to the White House and Congress in early September will be a pivotal moment in the history of the war - and a decision to begin a troop drawdown or continue with the surge policy will hinge on the outcome.”

The senior official in Baghdad also insists that US forces have “turned-up ... huge stockpiles of Iranian weapons” and adds, “The relationships between Iran and groups like al-Qaeda are very fluid ... the whole Iran-al-Qaeda linkup is very sinister.”

Noting, almost in passing, that Shia Iran “has previously eschewed collaboration with Sunni and al-Qaeda insurgents,” it then blithely reports that “US officials now say they have firm evidence that Tehran has switched tack as it senses a chance of victory in Iraq.” And, as if that’s not enough, it quotes  “proof that Iran has reversed its previous policy in Afghanistan and is now supporting and supplying the Taliban’s campaign.”

The article contains an ominous threat. It declares, “Any US decision to retaliate against Iran on its own territory could be taken only at the highest political level in Washington ... But he indicated that American patience is wearing thin.”
