= LATE NEWS FLASH =

"If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, man would only have four years of life left.  No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man."  Albert Einstein.

And no more profits.  Fraser Clark.

the UP! has been covering the Bumblebee/GM Ecodisaster while the overground media appeared to be ignoring it.  right?

now, suddenly, just when the news is breaking out into the public arena, comes this story about a mobile-fone connection.

very timely u might think.  just when such BIG NEWS cant be held back any longer, its being presented to the public as a MOBILE FONE CONSPIRACY NONSENSE WHODA THOUGHT IT SHOCK HORROR STORY?!  do u detect something odd here?  well check this from a typical newspaper report yesterday:

A limited study at Landau University has found that bees refuse to return to their hives when mobile phones are placed nearby.  Dr Jochen Kuhn, who carried it out, said this could provide a "hint" to a possible cause.

Dr George Carlo, who headed a massive study by the US government and mobile phone industry of hazards from mobiles in the Nineties, said: "I am convinced the possibility is real."

we all know by now about scientists by now, how most of them (despite billions of $ PR on their behalf) are for sale to the biggest corporation.  and here we have a Dr, who headed a massive study by the US government and mobile phone industry, saying hes convinced that phones MIGHT be causing it.  and why exactly was this limited (and presumably rushed!) study carried out by Landau University (no more details given)?  i mean who would THINK of sticking a mobile phone beside a bee hive in a limited study unless SOMEBODY was already very worried about the plight of the Bumble Bee?

my guess is that some corporate/government collective, forced finally to admit another colossal eco-fukkup, does so by dressing it up in some whipped together conspiracy concoction that will INFORM the public about another potential eco-horror while pointing them away from the real Cause.

all right, heres a challenge to u overground media who so often pick up stories youve seen in the UP!  do some easy research on WHO PAID FOR THIS LIMITED (and presumably rushed) STUDY?

as reported in UP!246, the University of Jenas Professor Hans-Hinrich Kaatz, who first discovered a POSSIBLE GM connection in his studies between 2001 to 2004, was asked why further research into such a pivotal finding had not been carried forward and replied:  Those who have the money are not interested in this sort of research."

SO WHO PAID ANOTHER PROFESSOR TO RUSH OUT AND ESTABLISH A POSSIBLE PHONE CONNECTION?!

Listen, prof, just stick a loudspeaker beside the fukkin hive, or a diesel generator, something to scare em all off, youll think of something it ain't rocket science.  :(

JUST IN!!!!In Finland and Lapland theres a thriving honey production. I spoke today to one of the biggest bee keepers with over 2000 colonies (http://english.lappi-hunaja.fi/). Since they take their colonies to the Tundra and to other places when the blooms are seasonal, they have rigs to weigh the hives so they know when to collect them and they use mobiles for this - sensitively - and they have no problems. The people I spoke to know of no GM in their country. This is merely confirmatory evidence in my mind that the mobile story suddenly produced is a sham.

This is no longer a question of covering up who's to blame - it's a question of survival.

Why George Bush is Insane

And George Gurdjieff is Sane

---------------------------------------------------------

Gurdjieffs Ray of Creation FINALLY PROVED BY SCIENCE!

Why am I often banging on against western science?Partly because I am at heart a Gurdjieffian.

George Gurdjieff, who died in 1949, had many seemingly weird and strange things to say about the world around us; things which directly contradicted the statements of Western Science on a fundamental level and also in a detailed manner.I studied the mans teaching for a number of years and have continued to apply his principles for living a meaningful life. And I have watched, often in awe, as more and more of his basic views on the cosmos around us have been belatedly discovered by science.Gurdjieff, by the way, made no personal claims for his information but referred them to an ancient teaching which had been passed on to him.

One of his most fundamental views of the world was what he called The Ray of Creation.According to him the universe is a growing thing. Our Ray of Creation emanates from the Absolute through various stages down to our Galaxy, down to our Sun, and then to the Planets. Our Moon is at the end of our Ray, our particular branch, and nutrition is passed through our Earth to it.Hence the Moon is also a growing thing.

Sounds like mystic hogwash, right?

Well, check this out for one of the biggest shocks you have ever experienced.(Shocks, he taught, are what we need to WAKE US UP!)

Why George Bush is Insane

by Harold Pinter / Assassinated Press

Earlier this year I had a major operation for cancer. The operation and its after-effects were something of a nightmare.I felt I was a man unable to swim bobbing about under water in a deep dark endless ocean. But I did not drown and I am very glad to be alive. However, I found that to emerge from a personal nightmare was to enter an infinitely more pervasive public nightmare - the nightmare of American hysteria, ignorance, arrogance, stupidity and belligerence; the most powerful nation the world has ever known effectively waging war against the rest of the world.

"If you are not with us you are against us" President Bush has said.He has also said "We will not allow the world's worst weapons to remain in the hands of the world's worst leaders".Quite right.Look in the mirror chum. That's you.

The US is at this moment developing advanced systems of "weapons of mass destruction" and is prepared to use them where it sees fit.It has more of them than the rest of the world put together. It has walked away from international agreements on biological and chemical weapons, refusing to allow inspection of its own factories. The hypocrisy behind its public declarations and its own actions is almost a joke.

The United States believes that the 3000 deaths in New York are the only deaths that count, the only deaths that matter. They are American deaths.Other deaths are unreal, abstract, of no consequence.

The 3000 deaths in Afghanistan are never referred to.

The hundreds of thousands of Iraqi children dead through US and British sanctions which have deprived them of essential medicines are never referred to.

The effect of depleted uranium, used by America in the Gulf War, is never referred to.Radiation levels in Iraq are appallingly high.Babies are born with no brain, no eyes, no genitals. Where they do have ears, mouths or rectums, all that issues from these orifices is blood.

The 200,000 deaths in East Timor in 1975 brought about by the Indonesian government but inspired and supported by the United States are never referred to.

The half a million deaths in Guatemala, Chile, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Uruguay, Argentina and Haiti, in actions supported and subsidised by the United States are never referred to.

The millions of deaths in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia are no longer referred to.

The desperate plight of the Palestinian people, the central factor in world unrest, is hardly referred to.

But what a misjudgement of the present and what a misreading of history this is.

People do not forget. They do not forget the death of their fellows, they do not forget torture and mutilation, they do not forget injustice, they do not forget oppression, they do not forget the terrorism of mighty powers. They not only don't forget. They strike back!

The atrocity in New York was predictable and inevitable.

>> it was very late in coming.

It was an act of retaliation against constant and systematic manifestations of state terrorism on the part of the United States over many years, in all parts of the world.

In Britain the public is now being warned to be "vigilant" in preparation for potential terrorist acts. The language is in itself preposterous.

How will - or can - public vigilance be embodied?Wearing a scarf over your mouth to keep out poison gas? However, terrorist attacks are quite likely, the inevitable result of our Prime Minister's contemptible and shameful subservience to the United States.

Unless Europe finds the solidarity, intelligence, courage and will to challenge and resist US power Europe itself will deserve Alexander Herzen's definition: We are not the doctors. We are the disease".

American Tortured in Iraq Sues Rumsfeld

Donald Vance was falsely accused by the US military of aiding terrorists. He was held without charge for more than 3 months in a high-security prison in Iraq, and subjected to psychological torture day and night without legal counsel or even a phone call to his family.

On Wednesday, the former private security contractor was honoured for his ordeal and for speaking out against the incident. In Washington, Vance received the Ridenhour Prize for Truth-Telling, an award named in memory of Army helicopter gunner Ron Ridenhour, who struggled to bring the horrific mass murders at My Lai to the attention of Congress and the Pentagon during the Vietnam War.

Mystery Killer Wipes Out Honeybee Hives

The Guardian

When one of London's largest keepers of honeybees, John Chapple, opened his 40 hives this spring, he was shocked:

23 were empty

7 contained dead bees

10, yes ten, were unaffected by what seemed to be a mystery plague.

Beekeepers are used to diseases sweeping through their colonies, and, nationally, nearly 1 in 7 colonies dies naturally each winter. But this seemed very different to Mr Chapple, who is head of the London Beekeepers Association and has 20 years' experience with the insects and their diseases.

"The problem was that most of the bees had just disappeared. It was like the Marie Celeste. There was no chance they had been stolen," he says."The ones that were left did not seem to have been attacked by varroa [the tiny parasitical mite that beekeepers have learned to live with since it arrived from Asia 15 years ago]. I really do not know what happened".

Mr Chapple's experience has chimed with other beekeepers. "Many colleagues and bee clubs tell me that they are experiencing something similar. The Pinner and Ruislip beekeepers' group told me only this morning that they have lost 50% to 75% of their bees.I don't know what is happening, but the bees are just going," he said.

Many British beekeepers fear they are witnessing the start of an alarming phenomenon which is sweeping the US and Europe. Colony collapse disorder (CCD) is possibly the most serious disease yet faced by bees.

According to the national bee unit, a branch of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, its "symptoms appear to be the total collapse of bee colonies, with a complete absence of bees or only a few remaining in the hive".The unit says no one has any idea what is causing CCD.Theories in the US, where 24 states are affected and losses of 50% to 90% of colonies are being reported, include environmental stresses, malnutrition, unknown pathogens, the use of antibiotics, mites, pesticides and... genetically modified crops.

Because bees pollinate millions of hectares of fruit trees and crops, the implications for agriculture are enormous."Approximately 40% of my 2,000 colonies are currently dead and this is the greatest winter mortality I have ever experienced," Gene Brandi, a member of the California State Beekeepers Association, told the US Congress recently.

In Spain, thousands of colonies are said to have been lost, and up to 40% of Swiss bees are reported to have disappeared or died in the past year.Heavy losses have also been reported in Portugal, Italy and Greece.

San Francisco Votes To Ban Plastic Shopping Bags

Supermarkets and chain pharmacies would have to use recyclable or compostable sacks

by Charlie Goodyear/ San Francisco Chronicle

San Franciscos Board of Supervisors approved groundbreaking legislation Tuesday to outlaw plastic checkout bags at large supermarkets in about six months and large chain pharmacies in about a year.

The ordinance, sponsored by Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, is the first such law in any city in America and has been drawing global scrutiny.

"I am astounded and surprised by the worldwide attention," Mirkarimi said."Hopefully, other cities and other states will follow suit."

Fifty years ago, plastic bags -- starting first with the sandwich bag -- were seen in the United States as a more sanitary and environmentally friendly alternative to the deforesting paper bag.Now an estimated 180 million plastic bags are distributed to shoppers each year in San Francisco.Made of filmy plastic, they are hard to recycle and easily blow into trees and waterways, where they are blamed for killing marine life. They also occupy much-needed landfill space.

Two years ago, San Francisco officials considered imposing a 17-cent tax on petroleum-based plastic bags before reaching a deal with the California Grocers Association. The agreement called for large supermarkets to reduce by 10 million the number of bags given to shoppers in 2006.The grocers association said it cut back by 7.6 million, but city officials called that figure unreliable and unverifiable due to poor data supplied by markets.

The dispute led to a renewed interest in outlawing the standard plastic bag, which Mirkarimi said Tuesday was a "relic of the past."Under the legislation, which passed 10-1 in the first of two votes, large markets and pharmacies will have the option of using compostable bags made of corn starch or bags made of recyclable paper.San Francisco will join a number of countries, such as Ireland, that already have outlawed plastic bags or have levied a tax on them.Final passage of the legislation is expected at the board's next scheduled meeting.

"We're disappointed that the Board of Supervisors is going down this path," said Kristin Power, the Grocers Association's vice president for government relations."It will frustrate recycling efforts and will increase both consumer and retailer costs. There's also a real concern about the availability and quality of compostable bags."

Power said most of the group's members operating in San Francisco are likely to switch to paper bags "simply because of the affordability and availability issues."

Mirkarimi's legislation is one in a string of environmentally sensitive measures -- such as outlawing Styrofoam food containers and encouraging clean-fuel construction vehicles at city job sites -- adopted by the city in recent months.

"It's really exciting," Jared Blumenfeld, director of the city's Department of the Environment, said after the vote on Tuesday."We're thrilled. It's been a long time in the making."

Blumenfeld said it takes 430,000 gallons of oil to manufacture 100 million bags.Compostable bags can be recycled in the city's green garbage bins and will make it more convenient for residents to recycle food scraps, he said.

ITS OFFICIAL:THE UK GOVERNMENT KNOWS

THAT Millions Will Rebel Over ID Cards

by Robert Winnett and David Leppard / London Times

The government is predicting that 15m people will revolt against Tony Blairs controversial ID card scheme by refusing to produce the new cards or provide personal data on demand.

The forecast is made in documents released by the Home Office under the Freedom of Information Act.The papers show ministers expect national protests similar to the poll tax rebellions of the Thatcher era, with millions prepared to risk criminal prosecution.

Opposition MPs said the new documents proved their case that the programme would never work.David Davis, the shadow home secretary, said: This will cripple the system.Fifteen million is a massive number. What the Home Office is accepting in private, but refuses to accept in public, is that a massive number of ordinary law-abiding citizens simply will not go along with their scheme.

Davis, whose partys policy is to scrap the cards, added: This will render it completely useless as a security or check mechanism of any sort.

The documents, quietly released during parliaments Easter break, also show that the government is planning to make ID cards compulsory in 2014, despite the expected revolt.

The first cards are due in 2009, alongside new passports.Labour has said it will make the scheme compulsory if it wins the next election.

Daniel Pinchbeck- Modern Shamanism and Reality Bending

REVIEW by Preston Peet/ High Times Magazine.

To many, Daniel Pinchbeck is one of this generation's closest thing to Terrance McKenna.

>> anti confidence-building start when they can't even spell terence.

Already well known and respected by many for travelling the world ingesting just about every psychedelic, mind-expanding substance known to man, [as detailed in his first book, Breaking Open the Head- a Psychedelic Journey into the Heart of Contemporary Shamanism]

>> he did it once.for his fukkin' book!almost certainly paid for by the publisher.and an utterly LOUSY description, mostly about his 'orrible village chief who was doing it for the money.

Pinchbeck is a leading visionary

no he's not, he appeared out of nowhere, knowing pretty much nothing except booze - a kinda david icke of the dope scene - ex sports commentator - as confessed in his break head book which title, when i saw it, seemed totally the WRONG kinda title for our case (how would YOU feel if your son was BREAKING OPEN his head.)i mean of all the metaphors available why choose such a potentially negative one?my immediate thought was:dangerous ally here. very unpredictable for future.MARK MY WORDS and give it half dozen years.he's already pushing the 2012 ting big time.i doubt if terence (a friend) would still be doing it if he was alive today.

when it comes to the possibilities inherent in exploring our inner spaces, as well as an enthusiastic proponent of consciously thinking a positive world into reality.

Pinchbecks latest book, 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl, takes a good hard look at the state of the world today - the massive destruction humankind is doing to the planet, and the possibility that we may be reaching the point where, as the Mayan calendar predicts, a cosmic change or even the end of time - could rapidly be approaching.Whether this means an end to the human race or merely the end of our current destructive habits and outlooks has yet to be determined.

I had the pleasure of meeting with Pinchbeck after an event at the Gershwin Hotel in Manhattan, where he read selected excerpts from his newest book, accompanied by a musical ensemble playing trippy, ethereal music. The reading was followed by an intense dialogue, during which he and the audience discussed shamanism, apocalyptic visions, the evolution of consciousness, and the end of the Mayan Calendar in the year 2012.

During the exchange, Pinchbeck proposed the idea that prohibition might not have been entirely negative in effect. He argued that prohibition could be considered almost a Western equivalent of the initiatory process that indigenous peoples must experience before being allowed to ingest the variety of psychedelic substances their cultures treat as sacred.

>> superficially clever, in actuality BULLSHIT.the PRIMARY difference (and it seems like he never lived thru it) is that the uber-culture did and does NOT regard it as sacred.

It has forced those Westerners interested in these explorations to actively prepare themselves for the experience by having to actively seek out these substances and go through all the risks and stresses to obtain and take them.

>> plus paranoia, social rejection, demonisation - real similar yes.

"I personally feel there's this evolutionary process going on that is going to work itself out properly," says Pinchbeck, "and all the things that seem like resistances [particularly prohibition] are actually aspects of the process, that force us to get smarter and more discriminating and overcome things put in our path.So in that respect I feel things might be happening in the proper sequence. There's a way now that psychedelics are coming back into the popular culture but in a sidewise fashion-whether it's the John Hopkins [where descriptions by more than 60% of the 36 study participants of the effects of their taking psilocybin met the criteria for "full mystical experience" as defined by scientifically accepted psychological scales], or the Supreme Court allowing ayahuasca use [in the United States] by these Brazilian religions.

When asked if he felt that everyone should experiment with strong psychedelics when these substances are made legal, he replied, "I think it's kinda like a self-selection, If you look at indigenous cultures, not everyone becomes a shaman. Most people do it once or twice

>> EVERYONE does it once or twice; its done to INITIATE the youngsters into Adult society and is not optional.VERY FEW become shamans.

, like in Gabon

>> the one and only foreign culture he has ever visited.(so go on tell me he visited the west indies or something :)

with the Bwiti [who take ibogaine, an extremely hallucinogenic root, in ritualistic ceremonies] but only go through the initiation once. Those who really go into those states deeper and deeper become shamans, that's only one out of fifteen to twenty out of a group.

>> more bullshit!1 in 20 r u joking?!1 or maybe 2 in the tribe more like.

So we might find that if this were allowed back into our culture, we could find a similar small coterie of individuals who feel this natural dispensation to go into these realms in a deeper way."

>> we're already here and waiting these past 2 decades, mate, tens of thousands of us.still awaiting our UN diplomas for planet healing :)

Despite the horrors he describes in his latest book - especially the destruction and veritable waste being laid to our planet and its ecosystems - Pinchbeck describes himself as optimistic about humankind's future."If you think about the idea that what we're learning is that consciousness is somehow more fundamental to reality than we've previously recognised,

>> not 'previously recognised' but ALWAYS RECOGNISED until the xtian era.

then our intentions, our orientation, become more important," Pinchbeck points out."If we have a more positive orientation, that could bring more positive things into realisation.I learned a lot from speaking with Jose Arguelles. One of the things he said is that in the next 5 years we could have this really incredible outcome for humanity and we could take away some of this negative technology and create a garden planet.I told him that this is never going to happen.

>> got the measure of this guy now?

He replied that his job is being a visionary and that, as a visionary, it is his job is to envision the most positive outcome for humanity.I thought, 'Hey, I like that, I think I'm going to take that as a job as well.'I think that if everyone did that we'd be in a much better place."

>> and u just blew our secret shamanic strategy big time u dangerous idiot.but thank goddess you're being positive i spose.

The Western Tragedy

The immense tragedy for Europeans, and most acutely for the northern Protestants among them, was that the same social forces that disposed them to depression also swept away a traditional cure. They could congratulate themselves for brilliant achievements in the areas of science, exploration and industry, and even convince themselves that they had not, like Faust, had to sell their souls to the devil in exchange for these accomplishments. But with the suppression of festivities that accompanied modern European "progress", they had done something perhaps far more damaging: they had completed the demonisation of Dionysus begun by Christians centuries ago, and thereby rejected one of the most ancient sources of help - the mind-preserving, life-saving techniques of ecstasy.

UP!

The Fiddling Foney 15 FEEDBACK

Hi Fraser!

Great to get the UP! again... it's been ages.

Re: Afghanistan / Iraq / Iran - at this stage its that, whatever the plan was, it was a more or less complete failure. As someone a lot smarter than me pointed out, theres a point at which whatever the original intentions might have been, local resentment at the 'collateral damage' etc. reaches the stage where there will be no end to 'revenge' killings. Its surely obvious to all that such a point was reached and passed years ago.

Dunno, I am kind of at the not caring stage as in, 'we told you not to, you ignored us, and now you can get yourselves out of this mess.'I would worry more about Iran if I thought recent events were anything other than US/UK posturing - they may be trying to make a case for an invasion, but this isn't 2001 and I don't see any political support for one - what do you think?

>> uno what i think, and if u didnt just make the clearest statement yet of the Fall of the Dinosaurs Last Stand i dont know what else u could say :)

The bee article was amazing - just what I've been saying all along - as those promulgating GM foods have and can only have no idea what any of the consequences might be... theyll get the blame anyway, and it serves them right.Until such a time as they can predict the consequences of each and every DNA change to the ecosystem as a whole, which they may never be able to do, best confine it to the lab, eh?

>> absofukkinlutely!the Precautionary Principle is the term thats starting to be used.its not so much that Science always gets things wrong but rather the unconsidered arrogance with which its applied that absolutely amazes and terrifies me.

don't miss the letter from Jackie Mackay elsewhere in this UP!

GM Crops Killing The Bumble Bees? FEEDBACK

Angry Mother Speaks UP!

This is soul shuddering beyond all other issues - I believe it transcends age, politics, race, etc.As a question of HUMANITY its about preventing a real crime against nature and US!In your hands lies a pivotal point in actual HARM or GOOD to our environment in a way that directly affects our (1) food (2) health.

The depletion of the bees has reached a dangerously low level in Germany, Bavaria to a far lesser extent where I believe GM is firmly established, and also in America on a near pandemic scale (quoted as 70% reduction of bee population with a potential of $14 billion impact on the US economy.

For the University of Jena, having undertaken this research, to then abandon it because of GM lobby pressure, and furthermore to publish statements as below seems criminal.  Indeed I say, from my own heart, it reflects a sociopath attitude.
"Sorry it had to be the bees guys " say the matter-of-fact corporate spokespeople "Superweeds would have been OK and human health, no problem - we can deal with that by just putting another 'myth' up on the corporate lobby supported de-bunking Web sites...... But BEES that's not funny"

I want to know why the project was stopped on account of
'no funding'.

There is something wrong here. This is an issue of life and death - not corporate profiteering!!  How could ANY of you sleep at night, turning your back on ESSENTIAL research of vital importance to the survival of many more species besides the "cattle' of the corporates - us human beings.

You are aware of the bee crisis in Germany - so why don't you speak up?  Is this just a problem for those who collect honey from bees?  The fact that their livings are threatened is, of course, of little consequence to shareholders and leaders within Monsanto and
Limagrain Group and so on.... However YOU are not a corporate (or maybe I am wrong) and should NOT be political.

Silence is not golden where this kind of thing is concerned - its
YELLOW!  The PEOPLE are NOT going to be silent about this one are they?  Germany, of all the countries in the world, should know this already and come out to save bees.Simple as that.

THIS IS A UNIVERSAL CRISIS AND YOU GUYS COULD SPEAK OUT.  As for Prof Hans-Hinrich Kaatz, he is a guardian of our young people's education and should either speak out or resign as a person allowed to be responsible for the education of the children of Germany.

Yes it's as important as that.

MANY companies who sell, distribute plant and process food from.... GM seeds, who research on GM, are going to be approached for the truth, facts and all waffle will be rejected.Lobbyists may have taken courses in filibustering - but they are so obviously unconcerned with the TRUTH that they will, within 6 month, have less credibility than a prisoner in Broadmoor.
In any case, shareholders in corporates who are killing the bees will be shunned as dinner guests nor even invited to people's homes.

You ARE INVOLVED WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT in an issue of the PEOPLE - this is not about dry academia - it is about the truth - about survival.... This is about wildfire - this is about.........

"SAVE BEES"

Indications of Gene Transfer Between Genetically Modified Plants and Micro-organisms

A release from the Friedrich Schiller University Media Service where Dr Kaatz works

Jena, 23 May 1999.First indications of horizontal gene transfer between genetically modified plants and micro-organisms have been discovered by scientists at the University of Jena and the Hans Knll Institute for Natural Substance Research in Jena.In a 4-year project subsidised by the Science Ministries of the German Federation and the Bundesland Thuringia, Dr.Hans-Hinrich Kaatz and Dr. Stefan Wlfl investigated the effects of transgenic plants on the honeybee under laboratory conditions.

Pollen collected from bees flying freely around the GM crop was fed to young honey bees in the laboratory. The contents of the young bees' intestines were then cultured and the micro-organisms analysed -- the GM gene that had been inserted into the rapeseed crop was found in these micro-organisms.
