Can This Box In A Dusty Library See Into the Future ?
Deep in the basement of a dusty library in Edinburgh University lies a small black box, roughly the size of two cigarette packets side by side, that churns out random numbers in an endless stream.  So?

Well, though at first glance it’s an unremarkable piece of equipment, a metal box containing a microchip no more complex than those in a standard pocket calculator,
it has quite extraordinary powers - according to a growing band of top scientists.

For it is, these scientists claim, the Eye of a machine that can peer into the future and predict major world events.

Apparently it sensed the 9/11 attacks 4 hours before they happened(claims which were swiftly dumped on by sceptics in the fevered mood of conspiracy theories of the time).

But last December, it also appeared to
forewarn of the Asian Tsunami just before the deep sea earthquake that precipitated the epic tragedy.  Now, even the doubters are acknowledging that here is a small box with apparently inexplicable powers.

'It's Earth-shattering stuff,'
says Dr Roger Nelson, emeritus researcher at Princeton University in the United States, who is heading the research project behind the 'black box' phenomenon.  'We're very early on in the process of trying to figure out what's going on here.  At the moment we're stabbing in the dark.'  Dr Nelson's investigations, called the Global Consciousness Project, were originally hosted by Princeton University and are centred on one of the most extraordinary experiments of all time.  Its aim?

To detect whether all of humanity shares a single subconscious mind we can all tap into without realising.

And machines like the Edinburgh black box have thrown up a tantalising possibility: that scientists may have unwittingly discovered
a way of predicting the future.  Although many would consider the project's aims to be little more than fools' gold, it has still attracted a roster of 75 respected scientists from 41 different nations.  Researchers from Princeton - where Einstein spent much of his career - work alongside scientists from universities in Britain, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany.  The project is also the most rigorous and longest-running investigation ever into the potential powers of the paranormal.

'Very often paranormal phenomena evaporate if you study them for long enough,' says physicist Dick Bierman of the University of Amsterdam. 'But this is not happening with the Global Consciousness Project.  The effect is real.  The only dispute is about what it means.'

The Random Event Generator
The project has its roots in the extraordinary work of Professor Robert Jahn of Princeton University during the late 1970s.  He was one of the first modern scientists to take paranormal phenomena seriously.
>> i can vouch for this.  when i was studying psychology at Glasgow University in the first half of the ‘60s, it was a subject of jokes among all the staff.

Intrigued by such things as telepathy, telekinesis - the supposed psychic power to move objects without the use of physical force - and extrasensory perception, he was determined to study the phenomena using the most up-to-date technology available.

One of these new technologies was a humble-looking black box known as a
Random Event Generator (REG).  This used computer technology to generate two numbers - a one and a zero - in a totally random sequence, rather like an electronic coin-flipper.

The pattern of ones and noughts -
'heads' and 'tails' as it were - could then be printed out as a graph.  The laws of chance dictate that the generators should churn out equal numbers of ones and zeros - which would be represented by a nearly flat line on the graph.  Any deviation from this equal number shows up as a gently rising curve.

During the late 1970s, Prof Jahn decided to investigate whether the power of human thought alone could interfere in some way with the machine's usual readings.  He hauled strangers off the street and asked them to concentrate their minds on his number generator.  In effect, he was asking them to try to make it flip more heads than tails.

It was a preposterous idea at the time.  The results, however, were stunning and have never been satisfactorily explained.

Entirely ordinary people, again and again, proved that their
minds could influence the machine and produce significant fluctuations on the graph, 'forcing it' to produce unequal numbers of 'heads' or 'tails'.  According to all of the known laws of science, this should not have happened - but it did.  And it kept on happening.

Dr Nelson, also working at
Princeton University, then extended Prof Jahn's work by taking random number machines to group meditations, which were very popular in America at the time.  Again, the results were eye-popping.  The groups were collectively able to cause dramatic shifts in the patterns of numbers.  From then on, Dr Nelson was hooked.

Using the internet, he connected up
40 random event generators from all over the world to his laboratory computer in Princeton.  These ran constantly, day in day out, generating millions of different pieces of data.  Most of the time, the resulting graph on his computer looked more or less like a flat line.

But then on
September 6, 1997, something quite extraordinary happened: the graph shot upwards, recording a sudden and massive shift in the number sequence as his machines around the world started reporting huge deviations from the norm.  The day was of historic importance for another reason.  It was the day when an estimated one billion people around the world watched the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales at Westminster Abbey.  Dr Nelson was convinced that the two events must be related in some way.

Could he have detected a totally new phenomenon?  Could
the concentrated emotional outpouring of millions of people be able to influence the output of his REGs.  If so, how?  Dr Nelson was at a loss to explain it.

So, in 1998, he gathered together scientists from all over the world to analyse his findings.  They, too, were stumped and resolved to extend and deepen the work of Prof Jahn and Dr Nelson.
The Global Consciousness Project was born.

The 65th Eye
Since then, the project has expanded massively.  A total of 65 Eggs (as the generators have been named) in 41 countries have now been recruited to act as the 'eyes' of the project.

And the results have been startling and inexplicable in equal measure.  For during the course of the experiment, the
Eggs have 'sensed' a whole series of major world events as they were happening, from the Nato bombing of Yugoslavia to the Kursk submarine tragedy to America's hung election of 2000.  The Eggs also regularly detect huge global celebrations, such as New Year's Eve.

But the project threw up its greatest enigma on September 11, 2001.

As the world stood still and watched the horror of the terrorist attacks unfold across New York, something strange was happening to the Eggs.

Not only had they registered the attacks as they actually happened, but the characteristic shift in the pattern of numbers had begun 4 hours before the two planes even hit the Twin Towers.

They had, it appeared, detected that an event of historic importance was about to take place before the terrorists had even boarded their fateful flights.  The implications, not least for the West's security services that constantly monitor electronic
'chatter', are clearly enormous.  'I knew then that we had a great deal of work ahead of us,' says Dr Nelson.  What could be happening?  Was it a freak occurrence, perhaps?  Apparently not.   For in the closing weeks of December last year, the machines went wild once more.

24 hours later, an earthquake deep beneath the Indian Ocean triggered the
tsunami which devastated South-East Asia, and claimed the lives of an estimated quarter of a million people.  So could the Global Consciousness Project really be forecasting the future?  Cynics will quite rightly point out that there is always some global event that could be used to 'explain' the times when the Egg machines behaved erratically.  After all, our world is full of wars, disasters and terrorist outrages, as well as the occasional global celebration.  Are the scientists simply trying too hard to detect patterns in their raw data?

The team behind the project insist not.  They claim that by using rigorous scientific techniques and powerful mathematics it is possible to exclude any such random connections.
'We're perfectly willing to discover that we've made mistakes,' says Dr Nelson.  'But we haven't been able to find any, and neither has anyone else.  Our data shows clearly that the chances of getting these results by fluke are one million to one against.  That's hugely significant.'

Nothing In The Laws Of Physics Precludes
The Possibility Of Foreseeing The Future
It is possible - in theory - that time may not just move forwards but backwards, too.  And if time ebbs and flows like the tides in the sea, it might just be possible to foretell major world events.  We would, in effect, be 'remembering' things that had taken place in our future.
>> viz “future memories” in megatripolis@forever!

'There's plenty of evidence that time may run backwards,' says Prof Bierman at the University of Amsterdam.  'And if it's possible for it to happen in physics, then it can happen in our minds, too.'  In other words, Prof Bierman believes we are all capable of looking into the future, if only we could tap into the hidden power of our minds.  And there’s a tantalising body of evidence to support this theory.

Dr John Hartwell, working at the
University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, was the first to uncover evidence that people could sense the future.  In the mid-1970s he hooked people up to hospital scanning machines to study their brainwave patterns.  He began by showing them a sequence of provocative cartoon drawings.  When the pictures were shown, the machines registered the subject's brainwaves as they reacted strongly to the images before them.  This was to be expected.

Far less easy to explain was the fact that, in many cases, these dramatic patterns began to register
a few seconds before each of the pictures was even flashed up.  It was as though Dr Hartwell's case studies were somehow seeing into the future, and detecting when the next shocking image would be shown next.  It was extraordinary - and seemingly inexplicable.

But it was to be another 15 years before anyone else took Dr Hartwell's work further.  Then researcher Dean Radin connected people up to a machine that measured their skin's resistance to electricity.  This is known to fluctuate in tandem with our moods - indeed, it's this principle that underlies many lie detectors.  He repeated Dr Hartwell's 'image response' experiments while measuring skin resistance.  Again, people began reacting a few seconds before they were shown the provocative pictures.  This was clearly impossible, or so he thought, so he kept on repeating the experiments.  And he kept getting the same results.

'I didn't believe it either,' says Prof Bierman.  'So I repeated the experiment myself and got the same results.  I was shocked.  After this I started to think more deeply about the nature of time.'

To make matters even more intriguing, Prof Bierman says that other mainstream labs have now produced similar results but are yet to go public.  'They don't want to be ridiculed so they won't release their findings,' he says.  'So I'm trying to persuade all of them to release their results at the same time. That would at least spread the ridicule a little more thinly!'  If Prof Bierman is right, though, then the experiments are no laughing matter.

They might help provide a solid scientific grounding for such strange phenomena as
'deja vu', intuition and a host of other curiosities that we have all experienced from time to time.

They may also open up a far more interesting possibility - that one day we might be able to enhance psychic powers using machines that can
'tune in' to our subconscious mind, machines like the little black box in Edinburgh.  Just as we have built mechanical engines to replace muscle power, could we one day build a device to enhance and interpret our hidden psychic abilities?

Dr Nelson is optimistic - but not for the short term
.  'Put it this way - we haven't yet got a machine we could sell to the CIA.  We may be able to predict a major world event is going to happen, but we won't know exactly what will happen or where.'

But for Dr Nelson, talk of such psychic machines - with the potential to detect global catastrophes or terrorist outrages - is of far less importance than the implications of his work in terms of the human race.

For what his experiments appear to demonstrate is that, while we may all operate as individuals, we also appear to share something far, far greater - a global consciousness.  Some might call it the mind of God.
>> i’ve been calling it GroupMind since early rave days.  it can happen locally, in bed with someone, in a lounge, in a club, or on a planetary scale.

'Society drives us to separate ourselves from each other, to be individualistic monsters,' he says.  ”But that's not right, and we may be connected together far more intimately than we realise.'

here’s some excellent findings on groupmind which you might have missed this year...

Humans Work / Play / Think / Predict Better As A Group
‘The Wisdom of Crowds‘ by James Surowiecki,
business columnist for The New Yorker.
[Little, Brown, £16.99]

In 1906 the English scientist Francis Galton stumbled on an intriguing contest at a cattle fair.  Attendees were invited to guess the final weight of a displayed ox after it had been slaughtered and dressed.  800 people gave it a go over the day and, Galton was not surprised to learn, not one of them got it right.

So?  Well, then he realised that the average of those 800 judgements had come within one pound of the actuality!

“Under the right circumstances, groups are remarkably intelligent, and are often smarter than the smartest individuals within them” argues Surowiecki.

Groups have been employed to find lost submarines, correct the betting spread on sporting events, even predict the president of the US.

But
groupmind has, of course, been given a very bad press since society was taken over by the warlords (say 4000 years ago?).  We only tend to hear it exists in terms of lynch mobs, riots, financial panics and, at very best, fashion styles.

Experts ”, you see, the smartest individuals employed by the ruling elites (unless they drop out) are continuously pushed on us.  Consultants demand £200 a second while execs rake in obscene salaries to rescue sinking giants.  Surowieicki even says:  “To accept that the masses might know something would mean radically altering how our society operates”.  Well, precisely. Did anyone ever imagine it could happen any other way?

Optimum Conditions For GroupMind
Even more interestingly, the mathematics behind The Wisdom of Crowds needs 3 criteria to work  independence, diversity, and decentralisation .  The very things our rulers strive to avoid!  We’re not talking about a small town mob with access to very little correct information, nor a war-supporting majority with no diversity of media viewpoint.  And, of course, many current clubs would do well to listen to this wisdom. [r u listening mr p?]

The US, for example, blundered into the Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961 because the decision-making group all shared similar assumptions and lacked diversity.  Bush’s war seems even more myopic and centralised.

The studio audience on
Who Wants To Be A Millionaire guessed the right answers 90% of the time while chosen advisers only managed 65%.

What’s happening is the human race (and possibly all creation) is moving towards a
groupmind method of administering (or playing with) itself.  The only real argument, imho, is whether we’re talking 50 years or 5,000.  But you already know this in your bones - even if your emotionally traumatised intellect fights it off.  Look forward expectantly, as you reach for another xmas pie, to increasing amounts of such breakthroughs to reassure you through this new year:)

Dicaprio Keen To Show In Biopic
What “Guru”
Leary Meant To Him
Leonardo Dicaprio can't wait to get started on his biopic of TIMOTHY LEARY, because he's keen to reveal to the world the magic of the man he grew up with.  Caprio was a child when he first met the writer/lecturer/activist and has always had great respect for his teachings.

Now he wants to show the world how special
Leary, who officiated the marriage of the actor's father and stepmother 12 years ago, was in a new movie.  He tells GQ magazine, "He was a genius.  He was like a prophet.  Everyone would go up on the hill to be with Timothy.  You'd get your sacred couple of hours and hang out with him and talk about the future.  He was really into what the future would bring and felt intrinsically a part of the future, even in his later days, when he knew he was passing.  He looked at death like he was passing into a different dimension, not that he was dying.  It was pretty fascinating to see a man in his last days like that."

Marrying Green Politics
With
Social Justice
by Polly Toynbee/The Guardian
The climate still hovers uncertainly at the borders of politics.  Its salience rises, but it still lacks authentic political traction to turn it into politics as we know it.  Those who genuinely put green issues at the top of their agenda still have to place themselves outside the conventional two-party system.

David Cameron has done well by stealing green iconography to repaint the image of his party.  His Vote Blue , Go Green message and fuzzy oak tree do have green roots in conservative tradition - their green-welly rural heritage.  He challenges Labour to introduce tough annual targets for CO2 emissions, pledging to cut some taxes and increase green tax

The Lib Dems, with a far stronger, well-worked-out regime, also offer
green energy taxes as the answer.  Both parties now look greener than Labour - but Labour may be about to trounce them both.

Labour have led the way in pushing the EU to toughen its carbon-trading regime and engaged with India and China on new technologies, yes, but attracting attention for what matters can be hard:  this week Douglas Alexander made a resoundingly important environmental announcement on re-regulating buses - but it went hardly reported.
>> one reason am bringing this thinking to UP! readers is because the time might be coming to start paying attention to the national political game again.  perhaps politics is cleaning itself up and radical new concepts are breaking through.

Buses, used in 2 out of 3 public-transport journeys, never interest well-paid newsrooms that don't use them; they prefer endless stories on the £5 charge on air tickets.  It is 20 years since Margaret Thatcher disastrously deregulated buses.  Now Alexander is giving councils the power to control them again.  It should end the bus wars on popular routes and bus deserts on other routes.  There will be a virtuous trade-off: councils can apply for cash for new buses from the transport department, but only if they bring in road pricing.  This should start a great environmental push to get people out of cars and on to new and better buses.

 So here
a major left-right divide may open up if Tory councils refuse to trade buses for congestion charging, while Labour and Lib Dem councils seize the day, exposing the thin reality of Cameron's green claims.

But so far Labour is losing the green battle.  Blair and Brown have failed to make this their number-one hot-button domestic political issue, still haunted by fuel-protester phobia, uncertain how to get a political grip.

The younger generation of New Labour - Miliband and Alexander - are leading the way.
Last night, in a remarkably radical speech to the Fabians, David Miliband showed how to capture the green flag for Labour.  He planted a red/green standard that the blue/green Tories can never match.
>> yankees read red for blueeverywhere on the planet red is for left/socialist/liberal and blue is for right wing conservative.  i smell a scam that your country switches them.

Here at last was the environment turned into progressive politics, no longer outside the political bloodstream but at the heart of the matter.  Here is clear green water between left and right, as Miliband brings progressive ideology into the argument.  He makes it as clear as day why the Conservatives could never cope with global warming, but Labour can.  He lays out the intellectual framework for Labour's capture of green politics, with the practical policies to prove it.

A reversal of climate change needs strong action by the state at home and abroad, especially in the EU; Tory shrink-the-state Euroscepticism can't do that.  It needs an admission that the damaged environment is a market failure; the Tories can't admit that.

Simply taxing energy is wickedly regressive, harming the less well off without changing the habits of the rich; the Tories and the Lib Dems both choose energy taxation, despite its social injustice.  People will never vote to live in yurts in the woods, but they will vote for restraint and the most realistic chance of clean growth.  International carbon trading is the only hope, harnessing the power of markets to find clean technology.

But Miliband's progressive radicalism comes in his plan for personal carbon allowances.  Here is where social justice meets green politics for the first timeGive every citizen the same quota of energy and let them buy and sell it on the open market.

The half of the population who don't fly will make money from selling their quota to the half who do.  Drive a gas-guzzler and you will have to buy a quota from the third of the population with no access to a car.  Who could complain about such transparent fairness

Nor is it difficult to do: swiping a quota card to pay gas and electricity bills or buying petrol is a simpler transaction than a hypermarket’s complex information on their loyalty card.  In wartime, ration books were produced quickly for all, covering almost everything bought and sold, involving every little corner shop.  (Could paper ration books be easier than trying to computerise it all?)

Why is this a quintessentially Labour policy that the Tories would never copy?  Because it in effect redistributes money from the rich to the poor, from the frequent flyers to never-flyers, with a parallel currency.

There are high hopes that this could be in the manifesto for the next election, ready to begin soon after.  Is it politically saleable?  It would begin at a moderate level.  The current price of carbon for an average person's consumption is only £100 - not much incentive.  But the price will have risen by then and the quota would be tightened each year to hit Miliband's 30% carbon cut by 2020.  The tighter the quota, the more marketable become the new clean technologies.

I suspect it will be hugely popular, a national game engaging even teenagers in quota-conservation wheezes.  It tickles parts of the psyche that like to trade and bargain.  Wear vests and save heating to sell some quota?  But when to sell?  Will the price rise or fall at the end of the year as everyone sells their excess?  Will it rise in the summer as people buy quota for flying, or in the winter when it's cold?  Imagine how keenly fluctuations in carbon-quota price will be followed as people decide when to buy or sell.

Here's the big question: what does Gordon Brown think?  He met Miliband this week and the word is that he greeted the concept warmly.  There are good reasons why Brown has been reluctant until now to "prove" his credentials by making gestures with green taxes on petrol, when they only hit poorer drivers without a strong effect on petrol use.  But Miliband's plan is the blend of fairness and environmentalism that Labour needs.

The Trauma Of The Great Mother
Do these simple things each day & know
you’re contributing to a world of greater good
After the recent nuclear experiments in Korea, the Earth needs our love, needs to feel wanted and needed & cared for - just as we would care for our own mother in a state of frailty after experiencing a physical attack.

The Earth has always endured the
pollution, turmoil, & hatred that mankind creates upon her surface & has survived.  But recent events have compounded the difficulties that She faces from mankind.  She has had to endure the unleashing of a terrible power that men initially harnessed to destroy each other - atomic & nuclear forces that have literally rocked the nature of this planet on her axis.

This set in motion
chain reactions that we cannot even begin to imagine.  Mother Earth had assumed She would never have to endure such attack again because mankind would have learned.  But now the Koreans have triggered a shock wave that’s spread across 2/3's of her body, like a huge bruise across the energetic tissue of her surface. Reprisals will occur, for nobody can send out anger or destruction and not expect a response...  UNLESS - mankind acts swiftly and sends out a pulse of love, light, & healing.
Mankind must extend its collective arms around the Mother & embrace Her with their love to reassure Her that this is not an act of war but rather an act of foolishness by a dictator who is showing arrogance & madness.  Mankind must give the Earth what it most desires at this moment ....  Love, Reassurance & Peace.

How To Send Thoughts Of Harmony Into The Atmosphere To Stave Off Potentially Very Dangerous Times
Mankind all too readily forgets the great power they have in their thoughts & in their will to marshal change in their reality if they so choose.
Two daily 5 minute gestures
would have great power to help at this moment:
For the Earth:
During the day, whenever you find yourself outside & close to the ground, or close to trees, bushes or plants, place your hands on the ground near the roots & impart the thought “Mother we love you”.  It only takes a moment for your thought to pass through your hands & through the roots, trunk or grass & down into the soil to the heart of the Mother.

Imagine 1,000….. 10,000….. 100,000 whispering voices falling like leaves down into the darkness of the soil to where the
Mother rests.  Whose heart would not be warmed by such simple earnest thoughts?

Simple acts bring healing.
Let then these simple acts be abundant.

For World Leaders:
Light a candle in the morning or evening, and as you gaze at the flame, let your thoughts reach out to the world around you. As you breathe, draw power from the light that burns at the very centre of your heart, the light from your Soul, your Divine, Higher Consciousness. Then, as you speak, let your words be filled with light that enables them to float out into the ethers, carried by the wings of your intent to those who need to hear them.

Speak simple, soft words -
Peace, Harmony, Love, Gentleness, Co-operation, Joy, Unity - words that will encourage the hardened minds & hearts of those who wield physical power to ease their struggle; to let go of the tight rein of their egos, to become aware of the balance of power they play with; to step back & take the hands extended by those other nations that are as frightened as they are, so they can form a unification strong enough to prevent things occurring through the force of its joint pressure, rather than via the power that it wields.

Do these simple things each day & know you are contributing to a greater world of good.

The Empire Is Falling
By Robert Fisk, December 8, 2006   The Independent
http://www.countercurrents.org/us-fisk081206.htm
The Roman Empire is falling.  That, in a phrase, is what the Baker report says.  The legions cannot impose their rule on Mesopotamia.
Just as Crassus lost his legions' banners in the deserts of Syria-Iraq, so has George W Bush.  There is no Mark Antony to retrieve the honour of the empire.  The policy "is not working".  "Collapse" and "catastrophe" - words heard in the Roman senate many a time - were embedded in the text of the Baker report.  Et tu, James?

Colin Powell: "US Army Is Almost Broken"
Former secretary of state Colin L. Powell said today that the United States is losing what he described as a "civil war" in Iraq and that he is not persuaded an increase in US troops there would reverse the situation.

Recent Studies Are Proving Popular Rave Party Drug
To Be
Beneficial
According to the Anxiety and Depression Solutions website, recent studies are showing that Ecstasy may be beneficial therapy for terminally ill patients suffering from anxiety, and is aiding in the therapy of patients with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Raves first became popular in the mid 80’s, and reached their peak in the 90’s.
MDMA brings about intense feelings of euphoria and energy that allows partiers to dance for several hours and share in an experience with others around them.

Most studies condemning the drug are considered controversial. Sometimes they are found to be false, as in the case reported by Rick Weiss of the Washington Post. In 2003, scientists from the John Hopkins University retracted their research, which supposedly showed that
MDMA caused irreversible brain damage after just one night of use.  Their reasoning behind the retraction was that the drug used had not been MDMA at all!

The
FDA gave the go ahead for research to be done in 2004.  Studies have since shown that the drug helps to alleviate the anxiety that cancer patients suffer through in their last days. The lessening of anxiety makes it easier for patients to deal with their pain, and the euphoric effects that make MDMA such a popular recreational drug also ease depression.  MDMA is proving to be helpful for sufferers of post-traumatic stress disorder, because it allows the patients to open up to their therapists and make them feel more comfortable in dealing with their disorder.

Psychedelic Horizons
Are You Hungry For Subversion REVIEW
Is a world spiralling out of balance finally ready for the multi-dimensional reality revealed by psychedelics?  Thomas B. Roberts, in "Psychedelic Horizons," thinks it might be so...

Rare and brave is a person who has the insight to explain the inexplicable and to demystify the mystical, both of which together constitute
the psychedelic universe.  As we discover time and time again, words are perhaps the least adequate of available tools to explain those intangible, ineffable experiences.  While not expressly aiming to achieve such lofty ambitions, Thomas B. Roberts nonetheless skilfully casts a rich and textured light on the subject in his new release, Psychedelic Horizons.

Long Goodbye = Long Hello FEEDBACK
Thank you for broadening my perspective and reminding me that hope is not necessarily foolish.
Harry the Dead Poet, New Zealand.
>> as i hope this issue has demonstrated it’s not really a question of ‘hope’ :)  and it certainly wouldn’t be foolish if it was cos the facts are emerging more and more clearly now  always struggling towards the future and against the back-pull of History.  be careful which way you’re looking!

Polonium FEEDBACK
For years we've been told by the governments of America, Britain, and the other NATO countries that have used depleted uranium weapons in massive quantities in Iraq and Serbia that the radioactive dust which these weapons spread over entire landscapes is safe.

When these weapons strike their target their depleted uranium tips are blown into tiny fragments  dust particles that cover the area. The Government has repeatedly claimed that the alpha radiation given off by this dust is no danger to the local populations of the Balkans and Iraq where plenty of these weapons have been fired.

The radioactive dust is only toxic we are told if it is taken into the body... we are not told what happens to people who eat vegetables that may have been growing anywhere the wind scattered the depleted uranium dust, nor to children who may get the dust on their fingers and then put the fingers in their mouths.

It's a little odd then that Polonium has now become such a dangerous toxic poison while the radioactive dust from depleted uranium weapons has not.  Perhaps ex-KGB agents with links to some very dodgy characters are more susceptible to alpha radiation then an Iraqi child?

I'm also sure that it's no more than a convenient coincidence that the medical records of the Iraqi civilians who fell victim to this dust after the first Gulf War were amongst the first to be destroyed in the looting that followed our victory in 2003.

Worried?  Next time you travel by plane you might give a passing thought to the depleted uranium that used to be used as trim weights in many civilian aircraft - a 747 could contain between a tonne to a tonne and a half stowed in the hold.
