when i stopped putting on public edutainments, i started taking little trips abroad to keep sane and healthy. at first i went alone, tho i tried to persuade a cuppla frens to come along, but you know how frens can b!
then, 2 years ago, a buddy came with me, to spain. next time, SEVEN people were there, in malta last spring.
and that’s when i realised i’d started a new kinda clubbing, travel clubbing, which i've called the Caravanserai Club.
we go away twice a year, during off-peak. i announce a great city in a foreign country that's not too expensive to get to, and everybody comes, independently, who wants.
so last October, the club’s outing was to Croatia (u can come for any part of that, of course) ELEVEN people showed up.
easyjet do £75 return flights to athens, from where it’s an old fashioned train ride over 2 mountain ranges to Tripolis in the heart of Arcadia. you don’t get a lot of tourists up there. this year we’re going to take a mobile so self-invited guests can contact us from any terrestrial connection.

THE LEBANON ASSASSINATION: WHO BENEFITED?

TEHRAN, Feb. 15 (MNA) -- Former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Hariri was killed in a massive bomb blast in central Beirut on Monday, making the situation in Lebanon and the region so critical that any discord could cause a new crisis for this small but strategic country.
Lebanon, which has been the cradle of peaceful coexistence among different religious and ethnic groups, experienced a 15-year civil war due to a series of domestic, regional, and international factors in the 1970s and 1980s. The war left thousands of Muslim and Christian civilians dead, causing Lebanon huge financial losses.
In 1990, the various groups finally put aside their differences, and calm and national unity ruled the country again.
Then, following the Israeli army’s defeat in south Lebanon in 2000, Lebanon was once more put into the worldwide spotlight, and gradually regained its regional economic position thanks to reconstruction and economic restoration, partly due to the efforts of the late Hariri.
However, regional and trans-regional powers such as the United States and the Israeli regime are trying to steer Lebanon toward a crisis, aiming to extend their military and political presence in more parts of the Middle East and the Mediterranean.
The United States’ strong support of UN Resolution 1559, which requires Syria to withdraw its forces from Lebanese soil, is part of Washington’s plan to politically influence Lebanon and the region once again. Israel and the U.S. seek to sever the spiritual and physical contacts between Syria and Lebanon in order to isolate Syria in the Middle East and undermine its political sway in the region.
Neither the Lebanese government nor the majority of its citizens want Syrian troops to quit their country! If Syrian forces withdraw, it would surely pave the way for the political and military machinations of the United States and Israel.
The Lebanese and Syrian nations, due to their historical, ideological, and ethnic affinities, are in fact one nation, split unnaturally into two separate lands. The regional and trans-regional powers must understand this and must realise that the two nations cannot be separated spiritually.
Now, the question is: Who benefited from the assassination of Hariri, a man who played a constructive role in the re-establishment of security in Lebanon?
All the evidence indicates that the Israeli intelligence service Mossad killed Hariri, since it had previously plotted to assassinate important Lebanese politicians.
Mossad is trying to help the Zionist army claw its way back into Lebanon, since history has shown that the stability of Lebanon is not to the advantage of Israel.
Lebanon now faces a more complicated situation, and should stay alert in order to thwart the Zionist regime’s plots to dominate the country once again.

They’re planning to film the scene from a helicopter, with hundreds of “extra” protestors to feed into US and other international media coverage of the summit.There’s talk around radical Glasgow scenes that Tony Blair has made the biggest mistake of his life in deciding to “hide” the summit in the wilds of Scotland. Scotland is increasingly independent of England and this is likely to show. Especially because of the heavy security clampdown that’s also being planned by “the English government.”

- buildings in cities and towns will be boarded up (to prevent demos). - thousands of police officers in full riot gear, armed with rubber bullets are being drafted in from all over Britain.

Stonehenge Forever!
After 30 years of going to the midsummer’s solstice every year, through good & bad times, the original barbed wire put up to stop us in 1974 is long rusted away. When I was 17 I went there with Zonk Star, who sadly passed over last Xmas. RIP. We met Wally Hope and shared his vision of free festivals at Stonehenge. We stayed for months, until the WIndsor Free Festival in August when 35,000 of us got evicted in a big battle with the police. In the repression that followed that good man Wally Hope got incarcerated to prevent him putting on the 2nd Stonehenge Free Festival. He passed over because of his political incarceration.
So me and some friends printed & distributed 30,000 leaflets around the big squatter scenes. And I got the Polytantric stage and generator, scrounged up more scaffolding, lights, tarps and hired a 10 ton truck and me mate Scavenger Pat got a bus out of a scrap yard for £60. Good weather helped our efforts and the London squatting scene went quiet for a week as 5000+ squatters turned up in 1875 and plenty of bands played.
Each year after that I printed 30,000 free festival lists and posters and stickers up to 1985. I’ve printed & distributed more than a million festival Lists and stickers. Added to this, in 1986 alone, the Stonehenge Campaign did half a million stickers, a lot of advertising. Red Ice Brian (Brian Cathcart) helped a lot as the Festival grew, running the free food kitchen and free crash tent, the Big Yellow Tipi, for several years to cater to the large crowds, we used to get 80,000 by 1984 and lasting weeks.
After the Beanfield Massacre in 1985 we formed the Stonehenge Campaign in London. Thanks to John and Sue our hosts at their Poetry Meeting Rooms at 99 Torriano Avenue, Camden, and I started the Stonehenge Walks. It’s been a hard fought campaign, a long road to travel. We were harassed at practically every juncture by state repression.
So, come on, let’s enjoy what we’ve won! But now we have to resist the uniformed druid hierarchy and the damn motorway, as well as get our free festival back and establish a national park around the stones.

The Tribe That Said: Talk To The Hand
Not everyone caught up in the Tsunami disaster wants help. When rescue teams reached the remote island of Sentinel between India and Burma the local tribesmen came on the beach ready to repel them.
The tribe seemed to have emerged largely unscathed, and as helicopters dropped food parcels they threw spears and fired arrows into the air. A landing operation was abandoned.
Rahul Bhagal, who is helping organise the relief operation, said the 100 strong tribe survived thanks to skills at reading the natural environment. “They knew immediately something was wrong” he said.
Hours before the quake struck, some tribespeople were hunting in the forest and others were scattered across shallow water looking for marine food.
Then streams of ants and other insects began pouring out of the ground and headed uphill. Soon after that the sea receded.
Men, women and children are thought to have followed the ants’ example and were safe when the tsunami struck. “They sustained themselves on coconuts, wild berries and small animals” said Saminrendra of the tribal affairs ministry.
Their refusal of help was a natural reaction. The Sentinelese are a closed tribe whose roots go back to palaeolithic times, and they are thought to be vulnerable to infections from the outside world.
Chattopdhyay said no further support would be provided without their request.

Obituary
(am i just getting old, or are people starting to drop like flies because of the deep deep sadness that’s been unleashed in the world?)
a very very good man, dave goodman, died over the weekend. in an era sadly lacking in good men, he will be sorely missed. he was 53, and died of a heart attack in malta.
UP! readers will probably be most familiar with his band New Age Radio and, more recently, Mandala Malta.
but he made his 'fame' back in the days of the Sex Pistols when he was the first to record them, after which his studio in Gipsy Hill was a hive of recording anarchy, producing the Space Goats, Theo and Shannon (Seize The Day), Invisible Opera Company of Thibet, and many other named and unnamed hippy and punk bands.
I loved the guy with all my heart. he rose well above the normal gutter that is represented today as public entertainment, and he was an inspiration and a practical helper to so many young people in the scene over the last decade..
dave and his lady, kathy, ex member of Design, were moved to do a runner out of the uk to malta when he brought out a protest track about the iraq war called 'The Wedding Party' (remember one of the first bombs that killed the wedding guests?) and then "made the mistake" of mailing it to the queen, the home office and the head of Scotland Yard! some folks thought the subsequent 'noise’ (strange calls at night, permanently parked mercedes across the street, weird guys talking to him outside his studio) was paranoia but i have no doubt it was real. those quotes are mine, by the way, said when he asked me how come i'd never had the slightest bother with the authorities :)

A University of Colorado professor, under fire for comparing World Trade Centre victims to Nazi war criminals, has refused to apologise for his remarks. "I am not backing off an inch," Ward Churchill told a crowd of about 1,200 students and backers in a standing-room-only gathering, drawing an ovation. "I owe no one an apology."
Churchill, who filed a lawsuit earlier in the day after officials at the state-funded university had threatened to cancel his speech, said his central message was that the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks had been provoked by U.S. foreign policy.
"Naturally and inevitably, what you put out will blow back on you and that's what happened," the professor maintained. In his essay, "Some People Push Back," written shortly after Sept. 11, Churchill said the hijackers had mounted "counterattacks" in the face of hostile U.S. policy in the Middle East and a campaign of "genocide" against Iraq through the trade sanctions imposed after the first Gulf War.
He also said that World Trade Centre victims could not be seen as innocent, calling them "little Eichmanns," a reference to German World War II criminal Adolf Eichmann. "True enough, they were civilians of a sort. But innocent? Gimme a break. They formed a technocratic corps at the very heart of America's global financial empire."
Churchill, a veteran Native American activist, first attracted widespread notice last month after Hamilton College in New York cancelled a scheduled appearance, citing threats against him and others who had been slated to appear. The University of Colorado then launched an investigation, a first step toward possibly firing him.
Scholars have rallied to the defence of the free-speech rights at stake in the case, saying the firing of a tenured professor over unpopular remarks would threaten academic freedoms. Colorado Gov. Bill Owens, a Republican, has called for Churchill to be dismissed and state lawmakers have passed resolutions denouncing him.
"I do not work for the taxpayers of Colorado, and I don't work for Bill Owens. I work for you," Churchill told the audience. He has resigned as chairman of the university's ethnic studies department, but has threatened to sue the school if he’s fired.
Yes, Churchill says, he felt sorrow for "the firefighters, food service workers, broom pushers and passersby" who died, but he also felt sorrow for the 500,000 Iraqi children who had died as a result of the sanctions. And he said he thought his initial published remarks had been deliberately miscast by conservative pundits. "Nowhere in there did I justify the killing of innocent people. Those words are not there."
Churchill's lawyer, Darold Killmer, has asked U.S. District Judge Bob Blackburn to grant an injunction that would prevent the university from "further suppression" of Churchill's free speech rights.

Several clerics from Anbar Governorate, west of Iraq, have issued a Fatwa, distributed in a form of a statement to several mosques, prohibiting fishing in the Euphrates river where it passes the cities of Fallujah, Ramadi and Al-Qaim.
The passing of the Fatwa was due to the dumping of dead soldiers in the river by the Americans, a practice that’s been going on for months. Fish sizes have increased beyond normal, indicating they’ve been feeding on the human flesh.

U.S. Operating Secret 'Torture Flights'
The Sunday Times of London has obtained evidence that the US government is leasing a special Gulfstream Jet to transport detained suspects to other nations that routinely use torture in their prisons. Logs for the airplane show the Pentagon and CIA have used the plane more than 300 times and dropped off detainees in Syria, Egypt and Uzbekistan. The Gulfstream and a similarly anonymous-looking Boeing 737 are hired by American agents from Premier Executive Transport Services, a private company in Massachusetts.
Analysis of the plane's flight plans, covering more than two years, shows that it always departs from Washington DC, and has flown to a total of 49 destinations outside the US, including the Guantanamo Bay prison camp in Cuba and other US military bases, as well as Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Morocco, Afghanistan, Libya and Uzbekistan.

Witnesses have claimed that the suspects are frequently bound, gagged and sedated before being put on board the planes, which, though they have no special facilities for prisoners, are kitted out with tables for meetings and screens for presentations and in-flight films. The US plane is not used just for carrying prisoners but also appears to be at the disposal of defence and intelligence officials on assignments from Washington.

The God Gene
Edward Wilson, the founder of the field of socio-biology, argued in the 1970's that a predisposition to religion may have had evolutionary advantages.
In recent years evidence has mounted that there may be something to this, and the evidence is explored in "The God Gene," a fascinating book published recently by Dean Hamer, a prominent American geneticist. Dr. Hamer even identifies a particular gene, VMAT2, that he says may be involved. People with one variant of that gene tend to be more spiritual, he found, and those with another variant to be less so.
It's not surprising that nature would favour genes that promote an inclination to faith. Many recent studies suggest that religious people may live longer than the less religious. A study in North Carolina found that frequent churchgoers had a 46% lower risk of dying in a 6-year period than those who attended less often. Another study suggested that a 20-year-old churchgoer might live 7 years longer than a similar person who does not attend religious services.
Partly that's because the religious seem to adopt healthier lifestyles - less likely to smoke, for example. And faith may give people strength to overcome illness - after all, if faith in placebo sugar pills works, why not faith in God?
Another possibility involves brain chemistry. Genes that promote spirituality may do so in part by stimulating chemical messengers in the brain like dopamine, which can make people optimistic and sociable and perhaps more likely to have children. (Dopamine is very complex, but it appears linked to both spirituality and promiscuity, possibly explaining some church scandals.)
Evolutionary biologists have also suggested that an inclination to spirituality may have made ancient humans more willing to follow witch doctors or other leaders who claimed divine support. The result would have been more cohesive bands of cave men, better able to survive - and to kill off rival cave men.

Goa Bans Beach Parties
Goa's newly elected Government has announced a total ban on raves along the Anjuna-Arpora beach belt.
Tourist minister Dr Wilfred de Souza said raves in the area had been disturbing locals and schools in particular, and ordered police not to allow a single rave party to take place from now on. Local press reports said nuns in a local convent complained of being kept awake by 3 day long non stop parties around Anjuna, which has long been the heart of Goa's psychedelic trance community.
The latest proposed comes just 2 years after Goa's previous government launched a similar campaign banning loud music on the beaches between 10pm and 7am, which prompted the Guardian to suggest the rave scene had disappeared, in an article last April.
"Anjuna (previously the heart of the back packer/party culture) was a ghost town," the newspaper reported, "The cafes stood empty, their shutters banging theatrically in the breeze."

Planet-Forming Playing Out in Miniature!

Astronomers have found what they say may be a miniature solar system in the process of being born.In the latest example of the apparent fecundity of nature, a tiny starlike object too small to be a star seems to be surrounded by a tiny disk of dust that could someday form planets, which could perhaps even be briefly capable of supporting life.
The discovery raises the possibility that astronomers will soon discover actual planets and habitable abodes around objects that are barely larger than planets themselves. The starlike body, only about 15 times as massive as the planet Jupiter, is the smallest object yet to be found with such a disk. With a temperature of 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit, it is also the coolest. As such, the object is not really a star at all, but a failed star known as a brown dwarf that’s only barely bigger than the largest giant planets.
"It's just incredible," said Dr. Kevin Luhman of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. "A little disk that could form planets around an object that’s small enough itself to be a planet." Dr. Luhman led an international team of astronomers that observed the brown dwarf, known as OTS 44, using the Spitzer Space Telescope. He will be discussing his results this week at a meeting on extraterrestrial planets at the Aspen Center for Physics in Colorado. A paper describing the results will be published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

ken's admitted it was abusive but says it wasn't racist and i agree with that. nobody disputes that calling someone a concentration camp guard is a gigantic insult, right? but it's still just an insult, NOT anything more than that.
now he's stated he didn't know the reporter was jewish. and how would he? (and even if he had, why’s it an insult to a jew? surely if it’s the biggest insult ken can think of then that’s showing RESPECT for what the jews underwent, yes?)

as for thatcher, if she’d said such a thing she wouldn’t have considered it the worst insult she could think of. and she’d have been adding further racial slurs to a long body of them. ken, on the other hand, has stood up firmly for gay-hating mullahs and was coming out of a gay lesbian do when this reporter accosted him. what the hell is reporter lurking outside such an event for anyway? hoping for some dirt or an indiscretion perhaps? obviously!

Under Hussein, in addition to the standard practices of totalitarianism (no free speech, execution of opponents, police state etc.) routine torture practices included forcing husbands to watch the repeated rape of their wives; forcing mothers to watch their children being killed. And this is not even to mention the mass murder of the Kurds. All these crimes are well documented. I know there are some 'holocaust deniers' who like to speak of the 'alleged' gassing of the Kurds (as if there are people pretending their relatives were killed, who placed the thousands of bodies in the sand and faked all the footage and reports).

The 13th International Conference of Women in Black will take place in Jerusalem at the end of August 2005 (probably during the last week). Part of the conference program will include visits to Palestinian cities and towns to learn about the tragedy of occupation (the infamous separation wall, the checkpoints, etc.) and also in order to demonstrate opposition to the occupation and all its attendant violence.
It’s being held in Israel/Palestine at the request of the participants of the previous Women in Black conference in Italy in August 2003. They’re also consulting with Luisa Morgantini and other women who organised that conference, and members of Women in Black vigils in many other countries, to ensure that the conference reflects as broad a spectrum of concerns as possible. This conference will not deal only with the Israeli-Palestine conflict, but with the broader issues of women, war, and peace-making. They will be inviting women to share their thoughts about the proposed theme, and in general their opinions and preferences.
The conflict in the Middle East must be solved by both sides together, Israel and Palestine, and therefore it would be wrong for only Israeli women to be organising this conference. However, since there is no Women in Black movement in Palestine, and since the Israeli army prevents them from entering each other's areas (only internationals are allowed to cross), there are great difficulties in trying to plan this jointly. Nevertheless, Women in Black of Israel are committed to involving Palestinian women in planning and implementing the conference. This partnership is a priority for them.
They are painfully aware that some of the most courageous Women in Black have been banned from entering this region because of their previous human rights work in Palestine. Others would like to attend, but cannot afford to come. They deeply regret this, and will make every effort through the use of modern technology to make the deliberations accessible to their sisters who cannot attend.
They’re also determined to bring as many activist women as possible from distant regions of conflict - in Colombia, Afghanistan, Iraq, some countries of Africa, etc. - to be enriched by their experiences and to offer them the power of solidarity. To that end, they’re issuing a call to Women in Black from privileged countries everywhere: you can make a major contribution to their common efforts for a peaceful world by sponsoring the costs of participation of women from these regions. They call upon vigils of Women in Black throughout the world to take up collections.
Though there’s been concern about the conference - where, when, who’s organising, when will information be available - the delay has been directly related to their commitment to maximise cooperation with Palestinian women. Organising a conference of this magnitude is always a complex undertaking, and trying to do it across lines of conflict and inequality makes it doubly difficult. But the product will undoubtedly be richer, more egalitarian, more feminist, and more powerful for everyone.

By the way the earliest wooden spear found so far dates from 250,000BC (Clacton on Sea in Essex funnily enough), wooden items standing little chance of surviving the rotting process. Oh there's other bits and bobs like the fact that large meaty animals went through a pretty severe extinction rate as humans spread but I would expect and hope that you know this.
But now one of your featured items and posted links was to 'eXile' - the self proclaimed 'War Nerd'. How The BBC Was Broken

“Of course not” responded James Naughtie, presenter of BBC flagship news programme, the Today programme, known since the fall of Greg Dyke as the “Toadie Programme”.
This exchange took place on Valentine’s Day about 8.40 am. For any reader unfortunate enough to depend only on sources like BBC News for their information on Iraq, here are some facts.
According to independent medical research published in The Lancet, 100,000 Iraqis have died as a result of the invasion of Iraq, the vast majority at the hands of the US/UK military.
The causes include bomb and rocket attacks on civilians, refusing passage through roadblocks to seriously ill or pregnant people, murderous revenge attacks on Iraqi bystanders after occupation forces are attacked by the Iraqi resistance, and organised torture carried out on the basis of legal memos supplied by the White House.
The destruction of Fallujah was probably the worst atrocity committed openly by the troops of a western power since the US unleashed chemical weapons on Vietnam using Agent Orange to destroy forests, and Napalm to kill civilians. Agent Orange was known to cause birth defects and tens of thousands of Vietnamese have been born with deformities in the years since. No senior US official has ever been prosecuted for these war crimes. Napalm is reported by independent correspondents to be in frequent use against Iraqis.
How could the BBC’s James Naughtie collude in the absurd lie that foreign troops are not killing people in Iraq? How can the BBC devalue its credibility and fawn to the opinion of a pathetic figure, the so-called Iraqi ambassador to London whose “Prime Minister” Allawi, an ex-Saddam thug now run by MI6, commands the support of less that one in ten Iraqis?
This was no isolated incident of journalistic incompetence. Before the seizure of Iraq Naughtie interviewed the then Iraqi ambassador who vainly tried to explain that Iraq had no WMD. This was perhaps the only time the public was given the opportunity to hear Iraq’s case, but Naughtie was mocking, aggressive, venomous, abusive and misleading, making a nonsense of the BBC’s legal obligation to provide “due impartiality”.
How can the toady programme still give favourable interviews to Blair’s “Human Rights Envoy” Ann Clwyd? Her human rights campaign “Indict” was funded by the US State Department. Her aides concocted cheap war lies about Saddam putting his enemies into mincing machines. She kept mum for months when she learned of America’s systematic torture across Iraq.

Under BBC News boss Helen Boaden and TV news boss Roger Mosely, BBC News has had practically nothing to say about the US/UK war crimes in Fallujah. Perhaps Ann Clwyd promised them there hadn’t been any. When the main hospital was bombed as a matter of US policy, BBC News reported the matter only briefly, with the implication it was a mistake. While sadistic US snipers killed civilians including women and children as they tried to escape, and dogs ate the dead bodies on the streets, the BBC was silent. While Iraqi resistance fighters counter-attacked, and while expelled residents eked out a desperate existence in temporary refugee camps the BBC called the US seizure of the city “successful”.
Now in one sense it’s unfair to attack Boaden and the BBC. Most of the UK corporate news media has also promoted the 3 Key Lies used by Bush and Blair to establish military control of the planet’s major remaining oil reserves. Boaden even made some sort of apology recently after correspondent James Robbins referred to “Iran’s nuclear threat”. But unlike for instance the Murdoch press, the BBC makes pompous claims to be run on an ethical basis as a service to the public, and indeed it’s the public which funds it and, through the government, owns it.
The 3 Key Lies
Key Lie 1 is now acknowledged: the WMD Myth. Remember how journalists persistently referred, not to “Iraq’s alleged WMDs” but to “Iraq’s WMDs”? They laundered government lies, they chose to believe the Bush/Blair claims against the hard evidence of UN weapons inspectors on the ground. When these claims were revealed as lies manufactured by the intelligence agencies the media blamed Blair and Bush for the deceit, but rarely admitted their own role.Key Lie 2 was that the US/UK invaders were welcomed. Key to this was the phoney image of the toppling of Saddam’s statue. BBC political editor Andrew Marr pronounced, with obvious relish, that the fall of Baghdad was a triumph for Blair, while Rageh Omar enthusiastically reported the toppling of the statue, with the suggestion it was an expression of Iraqi popular feeling. In fact the event was a pre-planned PR scam of the sort that should be obvious to any competent journalist.

Key Lie 3 is that the Iraqi resistance consists mainly of suicide bombers. The truth is there’s an ongoing military resistance organised by middle ranking officers of the original Iraqi army, and it’s exacting an ever higher price on the illegal occupation. Regular attacks on ground convoys have forced US/UK to use costly, dangerous air freight to move supplies. US casualty figures are misleadingly low if not simply false.

Estimates of the numbers of active resistance fighters vary from 10,000 to 200,000, but they would not be growing without the tacit support of the vast majority of Iraqi civilians in the many areas in which they’re active.
The reporting of Iraq’s “elections” two weeks ago was an orgy of deceit, led by US/UK corporate journalists from their base in Baghdad’s Green Zone. The BBC, unable to report on life in Fallujah during the US killing spree, claimed there was a queue of people there trying to vote. Al Jazeera put the figure at just one. In reports ignored by the US/UK corporate media Iraqis complained that they’d been threatened with the removal of food rations if they failed to vote.
The corporate media has since admitted that in the more militant areas (described in colonial divide & rule terms as “The Sunni areas”) the vote was as low as 5%. The widely predicted attempts to kill and intimidate voters did not occur on any significant scale because the real Iraqi resistance (as opposed to the Wahabi suicide bombers) has to maintain widespread support to be successful. The election results showed that puppet “Iraqi Prime Minister” Allawi had the support of less than 15% even of those who voted.
Criminal complicity in war crimes could be explained as simply misguided, patriotic support for our troops, but the BBC’s love affair with Blair goes much further than just the war.
“Labour’s Spring Conference”
Listeners have recently had to put up with hours of “reporting” from a hitherto unknown ‘event’ called “Labour’s Spring Conference.” This at the height of winter, and featuring a series of probable lies from Blair, described as pledges. Is the tone of the reporting not reminiscent of the replays of the old East German News? But this is not kitsch, not even comedy, it’s what Helen Boaden and Roger Mosely must think is ‘news’. How could this travesty arise?Through its legal structure the BBC is highly vulnerable to control by the elective dictatorship that has always been the nature of government in the UK. Since 1979 the Downing Street machine has been in the service of a tight international mafia of arms, oil and media corporations run by Cheney and Murdoch and currently fronted by Bush and Blair.
(The only tactic now available to voters in the upcoming general election is to deny Blair a majority and thus empower dissenting MPs of all parties who are not on the corporate payroll. But that’s another story.)

When BBC managers, led by disillusioned Labour supporter Greg Dyke, tried to rebuild their independent image following the WMD fiasco, they were violently attacked by Blair bagman Alistair Campbell, who had bullied the intelligence services into sexing up the Iraq WMD evidence in the first place. Campbell, responsible for the hounding of the BBC’s whistleblower David Kelly which ended in his mysterious death, resigned after allegations that he had told barefaced lies to MPs in Parliament.
A deeply compromised Blair-appointed judge from Northern Ireland, David Hutton, ignored forensic evidence and used the evidence of one witness to assert that Kelly’s death was suicide. He went on to blame the death, not on Blair and Campbell, but on the BBC. The BBC governors (also appointed by Downing Street) were then persuaded, reportedly by ex-MI5 boss and Bilderberg Group member Dame Pauline Neville-Jones, to sack Dyke.
Dyke’s strategy, to make the BBC so popular that no government would dare to threaten it, was wrecked. It’s back to the worst days of Margaret Thatcher: unalloyed propaganda on the main channels with a fig leaf of dissent on the minority shows. Private Eye magazine reports that there is now a BBC compliance unit to which all reporting which could offend the Blair regime has to be submitted.
