What could explain a decision to schedule such naval exercises (by definition, optional) at precisely that time? Bush-Cheney-Rove want to have the option, if Bush's election does not appear assured in the week prior to election day, to either 1) seek to provoke a genuine North Korean attack on an American ship -- and retaliate 2) in good Gulf of Tonkin style, claim a non-existent North Korean attack -- and retaliate 3) launch a frankly "preventive" or "pre-emptive" attack against North Korea Where such courses of action would lead the region and the world cannot be determined in advance, but, presumably, would be of limited concern to Bush-Cheney-Rove. Any of such alternative approaches to war would almost certainly assure the election of the Commander-in Chief on November 2. Tell people to be heads up on this. www.wagingpeace.org UP! Beleaguered by a torrent of western media reports that sometimes, if not all the time, are politically motivated, we’re all bewildered at what is really going on in the flashpoint city of An-Najaf, especially after a stark warning by the interim Iraqi government to journalists to leave or face arrest or even death. Well, braving the media blackout, Phillip Robertson, an independent journalist, and cameraman Thorne Anderson were the only journalists inside the US-besieged Imam Ali shrine for 3 days, and saw a much different scene than what was painted in the news reports. "This is natural because most Western reporters stayed away, thinking that the Mahdi Army would take them hostage or kill them," Robertson said. Robertson feels "heartbroken" at the destruction done to the time-honoured city by the three-week US raids. "I think taking the war to the old city, to the Shrine, was a terrible mistake, and a travesty. Most Americans, if they could see the mosque, and experience how beautiful it is, would agree. It is a sacred place," he said. The conditions of civilians in An-Najaf are deplorable, he reported. "No electricity, no good sources of food and warfare raging outside in the streets. Snipers are a great danger, and they are invisible. Most people are hiding, trapped in their houses. "These battles have caused a great number of casualties as well as widespread destruction to the edge of the old city of Najaf. "I believe that some men have remained behind to protect their houses from looters. This happened in [nearby] Karbala as well." Robertson further said there is a great deal of misinformation and distorted facts about the exact situation in An-Najaf. He was keen to refute claims that Imam Ali shrine was used as launching pad for mortar attacks by Shiite fighters. "There are no weapons in the Shrine. It is a place of refuge, not a military encampment," he said, extending a heartfelt thanks to the Shiite people there for their "kindness and hospitality". "The [Imam Ali] mosque is not used as a place for fighters to launch mortar attacks. I would have been able to see and hear any activity along those lines, and I was free to go where I liked. Mahdi Army officials are in the Shrine, but they are unarmed, like everyone else inside. I was there and never feared for my safety." Robertson also said many Shiites from different cross-sections of Iraqi society have volunteered to defend their sacred site. "In the press, they have often been portrayed as the poor, uneducated class of Iraq. In fact, this is not the case. Sadr has many poor supporters, like his father, Sayeed Mohammad Sadiq Al-Sadr, had. But many of the Mahdi Army cell leaders have a college education. The militia attracts educated men as well as workers. The movement is broad-based and cuts across many layers of society. Most Western papers don’t describe it this way - much to their shame." "The United States is spending a billion dollars a month to fight men who make 300 dollars a year. Fighters kept asking me why America hated the poor," he said. UP! Probe Set to Test Einstein Theory NASA's Gravity Probe B spacecraft will test Einstein's general theory of relativity. We were made for these times. I’ve heard from so many recently who are deeply and properly bewildered, concerned about the state of affairs in our world right now. Ours is a time of almost daily astonishment and often righteous rage over the latest degradations of what matters most to civilised, visionary people. You are right in your assessments. The lustre and hubris some have aspired to while endorsing acts so heinous against children, elders, everyday people, the poor, the unguarded, the helpless, is breathtaking. Yet I urge you, ask you, gentle you, to please not spend your spirit dry by bewailing these difficult times. Especially do not lose hope. Most particularly because, the fact is “we were made for these times”. Yes. For years, we’ve been learning, practising, training and just waiting to meet on this exact plain of engagement. I grew up on the Great Lakes and recognise a seaworthy vessel when I see one. Regarding awakened souls, there have never been more able crafts in the waters than there are right now across the world. And they are fully provisioned and able to signal one another as never before in the history of humankind... Look out over the prow; there are millions of boats of righteous souls on the waters with you. Even though your veneers may shiver from every wave in this stormy roil, I assure you that the long timbers composing your prow and rudder come from a greater forest. That long-grained lumber is known to withstand storms, to hold together, to hold its own, and to advance, regardless. We’ve been in training for a dark time such as this, since the day we assented to come to Earth. For many decades, worldwide, souls just like us have been felled and left for dead in so many ways over and over brought down by naïveté, by lack of love, by being ambushed and assaulted by various cultural and personal shocks in the extreme. We have a history of being gutted, and yet remember this especially, we have also, of necessity, perfected the knack of resurrection. Over and over again we have been the living proof that that which has been exiled, lost, or foundered can be restored to life again. In any dark time, there is a tendency to veer toward fainting over how much is wrong or unmended in the world. Do not focus on that. There is a tendency too to fall into being weakened by persevering with what’s outside our reach, what cannot yet be. Do not focus there. That’s spending the wind without raising the sails. We are needed, that is all we can know. And though we meet resistance, we, more so, will meet great souls who will hail us, love us and guide us, and we will know them when they appear. Didn't you say you were a believer? Didn't you say you pledged to listen to a voice greater? Didn't you ask for grace? Don't you remember that to be in grace means to submit to the voice greater? Ours is not the task of fixing the entire world all at once, but of stretching out to mend the part of the world that is within our reach. Any small, calm thing that one soul can do to help another soul, to assist some portion of this poor suffering world, will help immensely. It is not given to us to know which acts or by whom, will cause the critical mass to tip toward an enduring good. What’s needed for dramatic change is an accumulation of acts, adding, adding to, adding more, continuing. We know that it does not take "everyone on Earth" to bring justice and peace, but only a small, determined group who will not give up during the first, second, or hundredth gale. One of the most calming and powerful actions you can do to intervene in a stormy world is to stand up and show your soul. Soul on deck shines like gold in dark times. The light of the soul throws sparks, can send up flares, builds signal fires, causes proper matters to catch fire. To display the lantern of soul in shadowy times like these - to be fierce and to show mercy toward others, both are acts of immense bravery and greatest necessity. Struggling souls catch light from other souls who are fully lit and willing to show it. If you would help to calm the tumult, this is one of the strongest things you can do. There will always be times when you feel discouraged. I too have felt despair many times in my life, but I do not keep a chair for it; I will not entertain it. It is not allowed to eat from my plate. The reason is this: In my uttermost bones I know something, as do you. It is that there can be no despair when you remember why you came to Earth, who you serve, and who sent you here. The good words we say and the good deeds we do are not ours. They’re the words and deeds of the One who brought us here. In that spirit, I hope you will write this on your wall: When a great ship is in harbour and moored, it is safe, there can be no doubt. But that is not what great ships are built for. This comes with much love and prayer that you remember who you came from, and why you came to this beautiful, needful Earth. UP! Is Science Fiction About to Develop Alzheimer’s? Vote For A Man, Not A Puppet First McCain Rides Alongside Kerry and now Charley Reese (the conservative writer at the Orlando Sentinel) comes out for “sanity” Editorial by Charley Reese Americans should realize that if they vote for President Bush's re-election, they are really voting for the architects of war, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz and the rest of that cabal of neoconservative ideologues and their corporate backers. I have sadly come to the conclusion that President Bush is merely a front man, an empty suit, manipulated by the people in his administration. He has the most dangerously simplistic view of the world of any president in my memory. It's no wonder the president avoids press conferences like the plague. Take away his cue cards and he can barely talk. Americans should be embarrassed that King Abdullah of Jordan spoke more fluently and articulately in English than our own president at their joint press conference recently. John Kerry is at least an educated man, well-read, who knows how to think and who knows that the world is a great deal more complex than Bush's comic-book world of American heroes and foreign evildoers. It would be most unfortunate for our poorly educated country if Kerry's very intelligence and refusal to adopt simplistic slogans doom his presidential election efforts. Thomas Jefferson said it well, as so often, when he observed that people who expect to be ignorant & free expect what never was and never will be. People who think of themselves as conservatives will really display their stupidity, as I did in the last election, by voting for Bush. Bush fooled me once, but he won't fool me twice. It is not at all conservative to balloon government spending, to vastly increase the power of government, to show contempt for the Constitution and the rule of law, to tell people that foreign outsourcing of American jobs is good for them, that giant fiscal and trade deficits don't matter, and that people should not know what their government is doing. Bush is the most prone-to-classify, the most secretive president in the 20th century. His administration leans dangerously toward the authoritarian. It's no wonder that the Justice Department has convicted a few Arab-Americans of supporting terrorism. What would you do if were arrested and a federal prosecutor whispered in your ear that either you can plea-bargain this or the president will designate you an enemy combatant and you'll be held incommunicado for the duration? >> another useful glimpse under the red & blue carpet. This election really is important, not only for domestic reasons, but because Bush's foreign policy has been a dangerous disaster. He's almost restarted the Cold War with Russia, and the Nuclear Arms Race. America is not only hated in the Middle East, but it has few friends anywhere in the world now, thanks to the arrogance and ineptness of the Bush administration. Don't forget, a scientific poll of Europeans found the US, Israel, North Korea and Iran as the greatest threats to world peace. I will swallow a lot of petty policy differences with Kerry to get a man in the White House with brains enough not to blow up the world and us with it. Go to Kerry's Web site http://www.johnkerry.com/ and read some of the magazine profiles on him. You'll find there’s a great deal more to Kerry than the GOP attack dogs would have you believe. Besides, it would be fun to have a president who plays hockey, windsurfs, rides motorcycles, plays the guitar, writes poetry and speaks French. And it would be good to have a man in the White House who has killed people face to face. Killing people has a sobering effect on a man and dispels all illusions about war. 2004 by King Features Syndicate, Inc. Kerry To Win - He Has More Royal Roots When it comes to American presidential elections, blue blood counts. So say British researchers who predict that Democratic challenger John Kerry will oust President George Bush on November 2 because he boasts more royal connections than his Republican rival. After months of research into Mr Kerry's ancestry, Burke's Peerage, experts on British aristocracy, reported yesterday that the Vietnam war veteran is related to all the royal houses of Europe and can claim kinship with Tsar Ivan "The Terrible", a previous Emperor of Byzantium and the Shahs of Persia. Burke's director, Harold Brooks-Baker, said Mr Kerry had his mother, Rosemary Forbes, to thank for most of his royal connections. "Every maternal blood line of Kerry makes him more royal than any previous American president,.. Because of the fact that every presidential candidate with the most royal genes and chromosomes has always won the November presidential election, the coming election - based on 42 previous presidents - will go to John Kerry." Similar research carried out on Mr Bush ahead of the 2000 presidential race showed that he beat Al Gore in the royal stakes, claiming kinship with Britain's Queen Elizabeth as well as with Kings Henry III and Charles II of England. Mr Kerry is a descendant of Henry III and Henry II of England and is distantly related to Richard the Lionheart, who led the third crusade in 1189. He’s also descended from Henry I, King of France and his wife, Anne of Kiev, giving him kinship with the royal houses of Sweden, Norway, Denmark and the House of Rus. Mr Kerry also has historical political connections in the United States. He’s closely related to John Winthrop, the first Massachusetts governor - the state for which he is now a senator - and his maternal grandmother was the granddaughter of Robert Winthrop, who was speaker of the House of Representatives from 1847 to 1849. http://www.guardian.co.uk/international/story/0,3604,1284584,00.html UP! The Lesson of Spaniards RoadWrapping around the north edge of Hampstead Heath, Spaniards Road comes to a particular pinch at the Spaniards Inn pub. Rather than removing part of the pub, Camden Council (or some distant predecessor) must have decided to leave the historic building intact and allow the road to come to a narrow single-lane width at that point. Like so many roads in London, this road bears the imprint of an ancient village lane, and in this case allows cars to pass only one way at a time at the Spaniards Inn. Part of what impresses me as an American is that there is no signal, no sign, no explicit instructions posted at that narrow pass. Cars simply approach and, if opposing traffic is already coming through, wait. When enough cars pass through, the waiting cars take their turn and proceed. It’s obvious what needs to be done: a big yellow triangle must say WAIT, or CAUTION, or DANGER ONCOMING TRAFFIC. Better yet: a signal light could regulate which side goes when, just so there’s no ambiguity or really, liability. And what if a police car lay hiding in the pub’s parking lot, waiting to pounce on cars violating the explicit clarity of the signal light? Even at 1am, let’s say, when hardly any cars are on that road. This may sound like a paranoid fantasy, but in many parts of America it is the norm. Cops do lie in wait in the middle of the night for someone to ignore a red signal light. Believe me, it’s a bizarre sensation to sit at a junction with no other cars visible for miles, expecting that someone will catch you if you sneak through a red light. >> one of the saddest stories i ever heard was from a german hippy who told me he’d been heading home, tripped out, in the wee hours of the morning through some totally deserted german city when he’d seen this old lady waiting for the pedestrian light to tell her to go. he could see at least a mile in each direction and had sauntered on, but couldn’t help feeling what this poor old lady must have been going through to stand there, totally alone, waiting for orders. interestingly, in light of phil’s coming comments, he and i had assumed it was some leftover conditioning from nazi times. (When driving in America, be especially careful in the middle or end of the month, as police need to meet quotas on traffic violations.) A road in the condition of Spaniards Road is, in general, unthinkable in America, and certainly in the capital city! And herein lies the lesson. No amount of external legislation can appropriately define the subtle nuances of human experience. In fact, human judgment is the most valuable guide in human interactions. By legislating every possible course of action, a government negates the value of human judgment, and runs the risk of reducing the freedom it was originally designed to preserve. While it may not be obvious to Britons, there is still a great deal of dependence on human judgment in everyday interactions in this country. Let’s look at a specific scenario. Suppose that two cars came to the same narrow point of Spaniards Road at the same time from opposing directions. What do you think would happen? Let me risk this gross generalization: in Britain, the cars would stop and wave each other through. In America, the cars would rush to beat each other through. The first behaviour is based on internal rules around politeness and caring. The second behaviour is based on the absence of external rules suddenly leaving a void. Yes, it’s true that politeness is a bit harder to find in Britain than it used to be, and that in certain parts of America people are not in a rush and can act quite caringly towards each other. But overall, the effect of the environment is pernicious and much more pervasive than anyone suspects. For example, I thought I was a polite person until I came here. It’s only after many months of driving in this environment that I feel I would, on a reflexive basis, adopt the first behaviour and not the second. >> otoh, i just heard a scots comic mocking the english for being so apologetic. his example was how they’d be likely to say “sorry, excuse me, but your car just ran over my child.”! As the influence of America continues unabated, the British people need to consider the value of their own ways. It is not the least bit ironic that in some areas a sense of freedom seems stronger here than in America. Of course, excessive regulation and governmental control exist in many areas, and this trend is only growing. But privacy, personal rights and human judgment are still highly valued, and this American can only hope that they will continue to be so. On the flip side, it’s also true that most roads here are horribly inefficient and badly sign-posted, unless they happen to be constructed from scratch in the modern age. Driving is almost like an extension of walking in most parts of London. By necessity, buses, trucks and commercial vehicles clog up narrow, windy roads, and huge amounts of hugely expensive petrol are wasted in traffic queues that can occur anytime, anywhere. A bloody nightmare, by American standards. But a different quality of nightmare from Big Brother squatting over the vestigial remains of human judgment. UP! san francisco Mongolian Beer Anyone? The boom in popularity of Nature programmes has opened our eyes in wonder at the immensity of life forms and habitats. Less filmable in some ways, a similar but slower growth of interest in our Inner Nature is increasingly evident (New Age, shamanism, mysticism, Self Help, Spiritual paths). All of this follows half a century of obsession with the surface of things, advertising appearances, car chases and movie action, fashion and plastic surgery, and almost total avoidance of the individual’s inner life. The “natural bio-alchemical allies,” of course, are about nothing but inner psychology, and the amazing variety of thought forms, emotional levels, exotic places, sexual spaces, divine and demonic dimensions and oddities which different human cultures have discovered or developed around them PART ONE: GOING DEEPER The first half of Dopinions, then, employs wit, charm, and a mildly scathing iconoclasm to compile a fascinating, informative and thought-provoking mindbendium compendium of historical studies, legend interpretations, scientific experiments, eschatological theories of evolution, stories, travelogues, biblical drug re-interpretations, magazine articles, interviews, university lectures, how-to-do-it advice on shamanism, and poems written by the author in the ‘60s under the influence of various “allies”. For the author, these allies are “the psychedelics, empatheogens and tryptamines,” while the “narcotic and downer drugs” are dismissed as pain relievers, of little interest to healthy people not in physical or psychological pain. The third quarter of the book begins to develop, in a non-preachy, factual but amusing and insightful manner, into a well researched (but not generally known) evolutionary map of Man’s archaic past, present Global Crisis, and his stark choice between basically two alternative futures, and the reader begins to glimpse that all the disparate aspects in the first half of the book actually connect on higher levels. PART TWO: GOING MUCH DEEPER. AND WIDER And on its deepest level, in its final quarter, Dopinions builds to possibly the most confrontational, full-monty critique and outright condemnation and rejection of our entire modern western culture ever written, while proposing an alternative way forward for mankind (perfectly familiar to and well established among alternative culture). Developing the late (widely admired, even revered among alternative culture) Terence McKenna’s ideas on the magic mushroom as the trigger for evolution among the great apes, the book outlines A Mytho-Scientific History Of Drugs From The Monkey To The 3rd Millennium. This evolutionary breakthrough was developed and spread for nearly 50,000 years as far as Ireland and India by a trust-network of sub cultures practising GroupMind (ego-less) worship of the mushroom (and sometimes other power plants). The (disastrous) break-away of Modern Man marks the loss of this primary evolutionary Connection, and a Fall Back into a logically ever-increasing commitment to personal ego, competition and, in fact, in the author’s opinion, a devolution to the brute chimpanzees with a global male dInosaur elite and weapons of mass destruction from corporatism to sociopathic greed. Riane Eisler has advanced the notion that ‘partnership’ models of society preceded, then competed with, and were oppressed by, “dominator” forms of social organisation. Dominator cultures are hierarchical, paternalistic and materialistic, and the over expression of the dominator model is responsible for our alienation from nature, ourselves, and each other. The “Old Religion” was increasingly relegated to the mere masses, where it remained strong until, at the nadir of this Fall Back From The Great Breakthrough, evolution itself was actually reversed for a thousand years in the Dogma-Dominated Dark Ages of Roman Christianity when original thinking was absolutely tabu on pain of death. Only recently has the original evolutionary imperative begun to re-awaken in a big way, spurred to action by the planetary danger of this dominant ego-driven, anti-nature psychology. The author concludes that perhaps the greatest resource humankind possesses with which to change the world view of the maximum number of people in the minimum amount of time we have left, as unquestionably is required, lies in discovering a new way of looking at our traditional “allies.” The most controversial book ever written? Dopinions - Aimed At Two Primary Audiences.

Fraser Clark is sometimes called “the most widely read unpublished writer on the planet,” and they will be buying because of the publicity around the author’s name and reputation in clubland, alternative media, and weekly on the web (250,000 recipients). Also, there will be great word of mouth because it will be almost the first time any mainstream publisher has catered intelligently and maturely to their actual interests and tastes. 2. A very wide slice of the book-reading public whose attitude to “Drugs” has now reached a kind of turning point, especially in Europe, viz. “I can no longer deny to myself that there must be realities of some kind out there that lead so many otherwise sane people to so often, over such a long period of human existence, and now an increasing number of my own friends and acquaintances,. to keep returning to their doors. And most of them don’t seem to get into any kind of trouble at all! Explain the attraction to me! Turn me on, man!” Dopinions today, marketed properly, could easily perform the same function as On The Road when it burst upon the general public. On The Road pulled the cover off a whole scene, a culture of people and social mores which intercrossed with the beatniks via Paris, London, New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles, and had been going and growing for several years without anyone outside being aware of it. The well established alternative network of sub cultures from which Dopinions pulls the cover has been growing since then. It was, of course, massively accelerated during the Hippy Era, continued to surface anonymously in countless social movements from gay rights and green thinking to New Age and activist politics through the ‘80s, and has continued to expand, deepen and widen the ground and foundation of its ideas and reference points. And finally it was again, of course, mushroomed to colossal global proportions by the explosion of Rave Culture and a massively renewed participation in consciousness-changing that not even the most general public could fail to perceive. And wonder about. So the now totally global ‘scene’ from which Dopinions pulls the cover has been percolating busily underground for 40 years. It now shares a mature, well researched and deeply tested and experienced ALTERNATIVE REALITY MODEL, with an alternative political agenda, an alternative view of the Purpose of Life and Community, is anti-war, anti-corporate, increasingly shamanic, and so on. Increasingly its ides are being accepted, and beginning to seem normal. Coming on top of a seemingly endless bubble of rumours of a “psychedelic revival’, Dopinions could bridge a huge cultural gap, and begin the kikking open of a door past Western Democracy’s Final Tabu. Some people think Peace is out there in the cosmos somewhere, that it’s something that can be ‘tuned into’, regardless of the state of the world or our psychology. In a sense that’s partially true, I’ll say how in a moment, but many of us think this is not a real Peace. For us Peace can only come about through the resolution of conflict, a resolution that’s beneficial to all parties. To put it another way Peace is harmony, or balance, and in our social world it is the achievement of justice. This resolution is the ending of all oppressive and destructive conflict - though it should be added not of all creative tension, as they would create nothing but a bland world. There’s a big difference between an unpleasant conflict whose tendency is to destroy or oppress, and a tension which energises and pushes us towards resolution and unity. A strange irony it may be that peace is sometimes the end result of tension, but it is not an unusual experience. But a peace ‘achieved’ without the resolution of conflicts and injustices is not a real peace at all in that it doesn’t work, any attempt to ignore real conflicts may see them depart briefly only to return with greater force at a latter date; ignorance of reality is a form of repression. This is not to ignore the importance of temporary states of peace, achieved internally through meditation and relaxation, or in the outer world through truces and pacts. These oases of peace are necessary reality breaks, time-out periods for reflection and real life chill out zones. They’re important, but they are also temporary, they are not lasting. A lasting peace is required which demands the end of all war, external and internal - not peace at any cost. The oasis of peace can also be a dangerous addiction to some. Those whose internal conflicts are intense and unpleasant, or who are hyper sensitive to the external tensions in the world (states often connected) can fall into this trap and seek immediate peace at any cost. The tragedy is that these unfortunates will only increase tension by suppressing its resolution, and so will inevitably spiral down into increased distress. There is a metaphysics behind this process. Something sometimes called non-dualism, or in this case more precisely non-dualistic dualism! A contradiction? Well that’s the whole point. What this means is familiar to many already. The foundational reality of existence is a non-dualistic unity, in which there is no opposition, no light vs. dark, or male-female, or life-death, or beautiful-ugly, or even me-you, a state where all opposites collapse into one and all contradictions are true. However the only way this state of affairs can hold is if everything is in constant flux and impermanent. A door can be both open and closed if it’s a revolving door. But there’s a problem with this foundational reality, it can never achieve an identity, and so it can never evolve. The universe would remain an undifferentiated chaos, and we a disconnected bundle of unconscious instincts, within a single entity, if this state of affairs continued. But the universe evolves towards an identity. When this happens, however, thing tend to become defined and fixed. A conscious self forms from a collective unconscious and becomes aware of the other, a contradictory quantum state becomes defined and classical physics emerges, a ‘truth’ emerges and with it a ‘lie’. In the human world conflicts of interest emerge and war begins. Three paths become possible in this situation: one side of the polarity can oppress or seek to destroy the other, asserting itself as ‘truth’ or ‘goodness’ based on some arbitrary morality or just plan old fashioned ‘might is right’ (the way of religion and the domination paradigm which inform western culture). Another path is to return to the source of undifferentiation and dissolve conflict into a nirvana (the way of simplistic forms of mysticism and some Buddhism), but this also dissolves identity and so negates evolution, a dangerous form of ‘false mysticism’, a dissolution. Far more in keeping with evolution is to retain identity without oppression. A difficult trick given the contradictions involved. One metaphor for how this can be achieved draws on the original chaotic flux, but postulates an ordered flux, a constant cyclic change within a structure that constitutes an identity but is not sharply defined or crystallised. The ultimate metaphor for this is the Juggler. I argue that this model is the only one that helps in the resolution of the conflicts that are inherent to our existence. In fact it’s the way things are, it is nature’s way, as opposed to the human ways of domination or dissolution. This is not a new idea, its basic principles, interpreted in a variety of ways, are at the root of the most ancient cultures of the world, Egyptian, Persian, Indian, Chinese and Meso-American. In many of these cultures the philosophy is intuited and imagined, rather than rationalised, however, and cast in terms of a mythology. The most ancient intuitive mythic image involved in these stories being the Serpent. A symbolic entity which is the very heart of non-dualism, a ‘genderless’ creature who weaves its way in an ambiguous wave-like motion, whose poisonous venom can also be used as a medicine, and who constantly ‘renews itself’ through shedding its skin. The Serpent’s also an obvious symbol, the first image that emerges from the psychedelic chaos of Entopic imagery, forming itself from the waves and spirals of that experience. It is also the tunnel in and out of the Shaman’s reality. One duality is left unresolved in this symbol though, that of higher and lower, the original division of ‘heaven’ and ‘earth’, the snake being a ground dwelling creature. So the serpent also represents the first polarity that emerges with the first manifestation. The ‘Other’ (of duality) produced here is sometimes another serpent, but a high flying bird, like the eagle, which signifies the opposite of the serpent, and enters into oppositional relation with it. The psychedelic experience is more often of the butterfly which also is a common emergent form from the psychedelic kaleidoscope. But the butterfly often morphs into the bird, just as the serpent does the dragon. These images are common to the myths of nearly every culture. Unfortunately many cultures emphasise their opposition rather than their unity, and rigidify the dualism into moral battle between ‘reptilian’ Draconic forms vs. ‘hawkish’ Avian forms (devils vs. angels in anthropomorphic myth). But the real deal is not to foster the battle between these two but to reconcile the opposites. The ultimate anti-dualistic image is found in Psychedelic Meso-American cultures as the Feathered Serpent. This ancient image combines the serpentine with the avian, and so represents the ultimate non-dualistic identity and the resolution of the deepest conflicts. Significantly it is also the being who returns, according to ancient myth, bringing universal peace - the ideal symbol of evolution. Alas, it also has enemies who seek to thwart it. While refraining from the term ‘evil’ (good and evil being a dualism to resolve like any other) there remain negative forces of domination, control, inequality and dissolution, that resist this evolution. But the ‘struggle’ against these is ideally a creative tension, a positive ‘war’ that seeks to negate the worst but affirm the best of the old, rather than initiate its own cycle of repressive conflict. This is most obvious in its socio-political context, where the slogan ‘NO PEACE WITHOUT JUSTICE’ is not a dogmatic statement but a logical necessity. UP! "Terror will kill you" The Palestinians of Beit Hanoun in the northern Gaza Strip began to count the cost of a month-long Israeli invasion as the troops finally pulled out last week, leaving a trail of anger, despair and devastation. 42,000 olive, citrus and date trees had been uprooted, according to the local council. Altogether, 4,405 acres of orchards, vineyards and vegetable fields were flattened. >> for israeli protection, geddit? Officials accused the army of demolishing 21 houses, 5 factories and 19 wells, and damaging a further 314 houses. They said the loss could reach as high as £70m. The Israelis said they went in to stop Hamas militants firing rockets at Sderot, a town of 24,000 across the border inside Israel. One salvo killed a three-year-old boy and a middle-aged man 6 weeks ago. A house was damaged earlier this week, and two more rockets fell on open ground yesterday. Before pulling out, the army distributed leaflets with a cartoon showing rockets bouncing back at Beit Hanoun. "Terror," it read, "will kill you." Two weeks ago Hamas gunmen shot dead a youth whose family tried to stop them firing rockets from their backyard for fear of reprisals, but the blockade may yet rebound on Israel. Basel al Masri, a farmer who lost an acre and a half of grape vines, said: "Everybody here agrees that the militants should not fire from a densely populated area. But after this massive destruction, the people of Beit Hanoun will tell them to come and fire rockets from the tops of our houses." Abdullah Musleh estimated that it would cost $400,000 (£220,000) to rebuild his floor tile factory. "They have no justification for doing this," he said. "It is deliberate destruction of our economy. They have destroyed everything, 3 automatic pressing machines, the offices, the cement containers, even the marble floors under the machines. My 15 workers will be unemployed." The army commandeered the two-storey home of Abdel Kareem Abu Jarad and his extended family of 26 as a base. When they heard the soldiers had gone they returned, only to watch a bulldozer razing the building. "No rockets were fired near our house. There is no justification for all this brutality." he said. All their savings, $7,000 and 25,000 shekels (£6,500 altogether) in cash, had gone. Mr Abu Jarad said he suspected the soldiers of stealing them. "We don't want to be there" said captain Jacob Dallal, a military spokesman, "We just don't want the missiles to be fired from there. If the terrorist groups operate from among the civilian population and use private property to launch attacks, they also have to be accountable." The Israeli media reported yesterday that Mousa Arafat, the Palestinian security chief, had met secretly with his Israeli opposite number to try to stop the rocket firings. But the people of Beit Hanoun have lost faith in their leaders. 3 Palestinian ministers set up a tent there yesterday to assess the damage, but a group of armed men burst in and ordered them to leave. "We didn't see you when the Israeli army was destroying Beit Hanoun," one of them shouted through a loudhailer. "Go away. We don't want you here." As the locals applauded, the ministers left. © 2004 Independent UP! U.S. Professor Found Guilty of Staging Anti-Semitic Hate Crime On March 9th of this year, psychology Professor Kerri Dunn created a huge uproar in the usually quiet campus of Claremont McKenna College, located a few miles east of Los Angeles, when she reported that her car parked on a campus parking lot had been vandalized. She reported that her car windows had been broken, the tires slashed and a "swastika" as well as the words "Nigger Lover" and "Kike Whore" had been painted on the doors and hood. It did not take long for the Jewish faculty, lesbian and homosexual students, and the student organization Hillel of B'nai B'rith to capitalize on the incident and demand concessions from the college administration. Hillel representative D'ror Chankin-Gould said that the attack came as no surprise. He linked the incident to growing anti-Semitism worldwide. "We are here to say that we are scared," said Chankin-Gould. "Swastikas and broken glass trigger potent memories for Jews.” The campus was closed for an entire day in order to, in the words of College President Pamela Gann, ". . provide time and opportunity for our students and faculty to reflect on the meaning and significance of this horrible hate crime." The uproar suddenly subsided when two students came forward to announce to a shocked and embarrassed student body that they had witnessed Professor Kerri Dunn vandalize her own car soon after she parked it on the evening of March 9. Professor Dung was in the process of converting from Catholicism to Judaism and this may have been a factor in her staging of the phony antisemitic hate crime hoax. She was taking Jewish indoctrination classes at the time of the incident with a rabbi, and the hoax may have been a mandatory initiation rite. This is not known but an investigation should be conducted to determine if Dunn acted in concert with others. Today, a jury of twelve in the Pomona Superior Court found Professor Kerri Dunn guilty of staging the antisemitic hate crime. Jurors found her guilty of two felony charges for attempted insurance fraud and on one misdemeanor count of filing a false police report. Professor Dunn faces up to 3.5 years in prison when she is sentenced on September 17. Antisemitic hate crime hoaxes are on the rise worldwide. Another occurred in France just last month when police announced the arrest of a woman who alleged that she was the victim of a horrific anti-Jewish assault on a Paris train. The 23-year-old woman had reported that six men had cut her clothes, drew swastikas on her body and accused her of being Jewish. She also reported that "the thugs also threatened her infant child in her baby carriage." The lurid attack had "stunned France" and led to the usual outpouring of self-righteous fury and pro-Zionist hysteria. President Jacques Chirac expressed "horror" and condemned the incident, while Interior Minister Dominique de Villepin vowed to apprehend the assailants and stated that the attack was "more serious because it was marked by racism and anti-Semitism". The women later confessed that she had staged the whole thing. Another occurred in New Zealand last week when Jews desecrated their own cemetery by painting swastikas on their tombs. The incident was aimed at curbing criticism from New Zealanders after two Israeli MOSSAD agents were sentenced to prison for espionage and holding fake passports. The rise in phony antisemitic hate crime hoaxes occurs whenever gentiles start getting smart about the "behind the curtain schemes" that Jews perpetrate on host countries. The "hate crimes" are used to instill guilt on gentiles and to scare their own community into giving money to the Zionist leaders and to organizations such as the JDL, ADL and the Simon Wiesenthal Center. http://www.aztlan.net/claremont_fake_hate_crime.htm How to spot an antisemitic hate crime hoax http://www.aztlan.net/spot_hate_crime_hoaxes.htm UP! Jewish Voice For Peace The Campaign To Urge Michael Moore To Make His Next Film About The US And Israel Dear friend, Is the US an Honest Broker Between Israel and the Palestinians? Ask Michael Moore to Find Out! Both President Bush and Senator John Kerry pledge to preserve the US-Israel special relationship. What has it meant for the Palestinians? And is that relationship really good for either Israel or the United States? Some say that US military aid to Israel is essential to Israel's survival. Others say that military aid to Israel is simply another form of corporate welfare. Can a country funding a brutal occupation really claim to be an honest broker? One man can find the truth, and tell it! Sign our petition to ask Michael Moore to take the case! SIGN THIS PETITION: Dear Michael Moore: We applaud your courage in making a film that examines how the Bush administration used the 9/11 tragedy to push its destructive agenda in the Middle East. As Jews and allies, we the undersigned ask you to make your next film about the special relationship between the US and Israel. As you know, a history of massive US aid has funded Israel's brutal 37-year occupation, resulting in the deaths and injuries of thousands of Palestinians and Israelis. We believe that only you can effectively show how successive US administrations, arms makers, the Christian fundamentalist right, and right-wing Jewish hawks who incorrectly claim to speak for the Jewish people, have all pushed for policies detrimental to stability and peace throughout the Middle East and the West. You would think that would make every Israeli want to wipe out the Arab world, but the average Israeli does not have that response. Why? Because IN THEIR HEARTS, THEY KNOW THEY ARE WRONG, AND THEY KNOW THEY’D BE DOING JUST WHAT THE PALESTINIANS ARE DOING IF THE SANDAL WERE ON THE OTHER FOOT." Dude Where's My Country? "Hey, here's a way to stop suicide bombings give the Palestinians a bunch of missile-firing Apache helicopters and let them and the Israelis go at each other head to head. 4 billion dollars a year to Israel 4 billion dollars a year to the Palestinians they can just blow each other up and leave the rest of us the hell alone." Dude Where's My Country? “Now I'm not just talking about your everyday anti-Semites. No, I'm talking about a perceived notion that we Americans are supporting Israel in its oppression of the Palestinian people. Now where did those Arabs come up with an idea like that? Maybe it was when the Palestinian child looked up in the air and saw an American Apache helicopter firing a missile into his baby sister's bedroom just before she was blown into a hundred bits." info@jewishvoiceforpeace.org UP! Protest Songs Finally Get AirplayMore than 3 decades ago, artists such as Joan Baez, Edwin Starr and Crosby Stills Nash & Young took on the Vietnam War in their music. Many of their songs remain staples of classic rock today, even if their meanings are lost to new listeners who don't realize that Credence Clearwater Revival's "Who'll Stop the Rain" is about long lists of dead soldiers or that Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth" celebrates dissent. Now the country’s at war again, and the nation turns its lonely eyes to musicians, who have responded with - well, not a whole lot. If you hear a song about the conflict on the radio these days, chances are good you're listening to a stirring patriotic tribute on a country music station. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But where are the protest songs? It turns out that they're out there, and they're slowly getting more airplay. "The level of anti-war dissent on the radio has been ratcheted up steadily over the last year," says Sean Ross, a media analyst who monitors the radio industry.
