been sick most of the week  dog too.

i note that world opinion has forced the already downsized russian dinosaur boss to step back from his intention to close down the Yukos oil business.  another step in the fall of the Big Beast approach.

meanwhile i’ve spotted
some new kinda lying in the overground press.  they never stand still, soon as you spot one thing they’ve got another.  far as i can make out, kerry is regularly hovering around 50% and bush on 45.  AND YET VIRTUALLY THE ENTIRE MEDIA KEEP CALLING IT “VERY CLOSE”!

the  .01% by which bush won last time is neck&neck.  s consistent 5% lead is MASSIVE.

why would anyone want to do this?  well, if the media had been saying for weeks that kerry is ahead, the president would be looking like toast, and more people would be joining big K’s bandwagon.  so clearly someone (some headspace) is keeping bush’s hopes alive.

me, i’m sticking with my prediction of the
biggest loss in history, followed by prison, and even the firing squad.  K’s a military man, remember, or playing it for all he’s worth.  he takes treason very very seriously.  and we’ll be right behind him.

SUDAN  WHY HAVEN’T WE SENT IN THE TROOPS?!  well, i dunno the truth (how could anyone?)  but i do see all the signs of the public being groomed for another invasion of a muslim country.  ARE U GOING TO FALL FOR IT EVERY SINGLE TIME?!  ARE WE NEVER GOING TO LEARN?!

there are no saints here, so it’s not a question of deciding who’s the bad guy.  but it IS a civil war and the rebels are fighting government forces, right?  and i remember reading (back when you could get some real news) that the muslims are partly nomadic and move from pastures in the north down south for different seasons?  and that the Xtians (?) were moving in on their 6 month abandoned base camps.  i’ve seen this happen in morocco.  this is a complex problem, but not a reason to invade another muslim country!

and, over the weekend, to top it all, there was a mass protest by so-called “
20,000” sudanese people against invasion of their country and promising “eternal holy war against the infidels.”  god help us all.  how much, compared to war, would it take to help build each side’s solution?

the main key to working out what’s going in is when you start NOT hearing the other side’s position.

As the UK government invents new laws to protect animal experimenters, and as genetically modified human athletes descend on Athens to, supposedly, show our finest human qualities, pet lovers worldwide have been horrified to learn that the city's population of homeless mutts

has been deemed an embarrassing eyesore.
>> they think we will be scandalised, gettit?!

Greek animal activists allege that the 40,000strays are being deliberately poisoned.  While the Greek government denies any involvement, witnesses say they've seen dead and dying animals rounded up by trash collectors.  And city and suburban parks, once teeming with strays, are now mostly empty.
>> literally and spiritually.

"Dogs are being left a cocktail of poison in food scattered across the city," says vet assistant Angela Fleming, of the Athens group Caring for the Animals. "It’s barbaricThese animals are hungry, so they’ll eat the bait."  She has had little success treating dogs brought to her by concerned citizens.  "They froth at the mouth and convulse and die a lingering, horrific death. Whoever does this doesn't see the pain."

Marijo Gillis traveled to Athens to document this barbarity.  Her graphic 5-minute video, depicts terrible animal suffering and is very difficult to watch.

But Gillis, founder of the non-profit Welfare for Animals in Greece, hopes people will protest what they see.  "Please join me in conveying outrage and shock over the compassionless treatment of these innocent animals," she urges.  To make a tax-deductible donation, call (212) 427-0587.

Scientism =  The belief that scientific theories are true descriptions of the way the world actually is, that the world is purely material, and everything is explicable scientifically.
The holding of all or some of these beliefs as if a religion.
>> and everybody’s incorporated some of it without realising.

Science =  A methodology for generating useful models of the world which enable us to manipulate the physical properties of that world.  Applicable wherever possible.  Pragmatically true, but constantly replaced by new theories.  The entities of which (eg atoms) are possibly instrumental (useful fictions that help describe phenomena).
An open minded but sceptical attitude.

The subjective element of science is that we never have enough data to complete a picture (theory), we nearly always have limited experimental data, so it’s a bit like looking at an unfinished drawing and an inkblot test combined, we have to interpret what it is.  And worse, there are gaps in it which we have to fill with imagination and logic.  This means there are many different theories that 'explain' the same data, so the one we choose (or 'see') will reflect subjective bias (personal and cultural). Its the same with anything in life, we collect a few bits of information about something, then we have to make sense of it - the results in ordinary life depend on our optimism/pessimism (and paranoia level), imagination and previous experience.

Culturally, it’s suspicious that we live in a capitalist culture which capitalist atomic scientists see the world in terms of particle exchange. :)

On a deeper level, the way we
'see' the world depends on our concepts, which are either hard wired in our brains or products of our language (probably a bit of both).  Concepts like 'cause/effect', 'order/pattern', 'part/whole' etc are mental categories we have evolved to help us survive.

Neither these root
'mental categories' or the 'theories' we produce from them in the face of experimental data and subjective bias are 'real,' they are just 'real enough' to work.  Half truths at best which gives a rough impression of the world and a few useful models of it.

Arcology Theory
Arcology is Paolo Soleri's concept of cities which embody the fusion of architecture with ecology.  The arcology concept proposes a highly integrated and compact 3-dimensional urban form that is the opposite of urban sprawl with its inherently wasteful consumption of land, energy and time, tending to isolate people from each other and the community.   The complexification and miniaturisation of the city enables radical conservation of land, energy and resources.

An arcology would need about 2% as much land as a typical city of similar population.  Today's typical city devotes more than 60% of its land to roads and automobile services.  Arcology
eliminates the automobile from within the city.  The multi-use nature of arcology design would put living, working and public spaces within easy reach of each other and walking would be the main form of transportation within the city.

An arcology's direct proximity to
uninhabited wilderness would provide the city dweller with constant immediate and low-impact access to rural space, as well as allowing agriculture to be situated near the city, maximising the logistical efficiency of food distribution systems.   Arcology would use passive solar architectural techniques such as the apse effect, greenhouse architecture and garment architecture to reduce the energy usage of the city, especially in terms of heating, lighting and cooling.  Overall, arcology seeks to embody a "Lean Alternative" to
hyper consumption and wastefulness through more frugal, efficient and intelligent city design.

Arcology theory holds that this leanness is obtainable only via the miniaturisation intrinsic to the
Urban Effect, the complex interaction between diverse entities and organisms which mark healthy systems both in the natural world and in every successful and culturally significant city in history.

SAVE THE UNBORN FAECES!
July 20 -- NEWSWEEK reports that George W. Bush, appearing before a right-to-life rally in Tampa, Florida, on June 17, stated: "We must always remember that all human beings begin life as a faeces. A faeces is a living being in the eyes of God, who has endowed that faeces with all of the rights and God-given blessings of any other human being."  Bush repeated his error at least a dozen times, before realizing that he had used the word 'faeces" when he meant to say "foetus." ...

QUESTIONING OUR ROOT ASSUMPTION
The Heavy Thinking Disease
As a boy and a young man, the Polynesian Chief Tuivaii showed such an interest in and an aptitude for the higher spiritual and educational life at the mission school on his island that he was much ‘groomed’ by the missionaries.  In fact he was such a good boy that, when he reached adulthood in the year 1900, the English church fathers arranged for him to visit the home country, and to tour Europe.
But, during his year there, this noble-minded man was so deeply shocked and appalled by the ‘
superior Christian culture” that, on his return to his island, and after several weeks in deep seclusion, he called all the people together and warned them against the Papalaji (white men) in a series of eleven recorded talks.
It’s extremely rare, and priceless really, to get a total outsider’s view of the root assumptions of our culture from someone also educated in it.  Most importantly, because of its rarity, I think we
can safely conclude that the chief’s views must represent the views of many such foreign peoples on encountering the White Man
but who were, and are, unable to communicate it to us.  It is most humbling, and hence salutary, and we should appreciate the value in this document.
The never-published manuscript came into my hands in the ‘90s and I published some chapters in a magazine I was editing then.  If anyone out there has the original manuscript, please make contact.

SPEECH FIVE
The Heavy Thinking Disease
My brothers and sisters, everybody knows about spirit without having to think about it.

But when the Papalaji uses the word, his eyes become huge, his chest swells, he breathes heavily, and he stretches like a warrior who has defeated his enemy.

For the Papalaji, “
spirit” is a source of great pride.  I don’t mean the Great Spirit which the missionaries call God and of whom we are mere reflections.  No, I speak of the small spirit that belongs to man, the one that makes his personal thoughts.

From here I can see the mango tree behind the mission church.  That’s not spirit to the Papalaji because all I’m doing is seeing the living, beautiful tree.  But if I happen to notice that the tree is bigger than the church, which is why I can see it from here, then that’s spirit.  It’s not enough to just see things, I must know about them too.

This “knowing” is something the Papalaji does from morning till night.

His spirit’s always like a loaded fire-cane (rifle) or the cast fishing rod, and he actually pities our peoples of the many islands because we don’t exercise this “
knowledge”.  He can’t help seeing our minds as threadbare and stupid, like the beasts of the forest.  It’s true!

Now my own view is that, yes, it’s true that we don’t exercise much of what the Papalaji call thinking, but are people who don’t think much more stupid than people who think too much?

And there is no doubt in my mind that the Papalaji suffer terribly from their heavy thinking disease.  They cannot stop thinking!
My hut is smaller than the palm tree.”  “The palm tree sways in the storm.”  “The storm screams in a loud voice.”  Those kinds of things he thinks, in his own particular way of course.

And he also thinks about himself  a lot! “I’m too short.”  “I’m always happy when I see a lady.”  “I enjoy going on malagas”.  And so on.  I mean it’s all very nice, and maybe he gets some kind of pleasure or gain from this game in his head, but the Papalaji take it much too far!
It’s become a compulsion!   With truly strenuous effort he can occasionally stop thinking, living with all of his body together, but next moment it’s gone again.  Often his body’s asleep while he lives in his head, he walks around, talks, eats and laughs but only his head is awake.   It’s like he’s imprisoned by his
mentality.

When the sun shines down, say, it’s much better not to have your mind thinking “
Oh how beautiful the sun is!”  That’s foolish, that’s all wrong!  A healthy man will stretch his body in the pink warm light and think nothing.  He takes in the sun, not just with his head, but with his hands, and his feet, and his ankles, and how the heat lies on his belly and all the rest of what’s going on.  Indeed he leaves the thinking to his skin and his limbs.  Which do think, though in a different way.  But don’t even bother trying to explain that to the Papalaji!

His thoughts are like huge chunks of lava that he has to carry wherever he goes.  He thinks gaily but doesn’t laugh.  He things sadly but doesn’t cry.  He’s hungry but doesn’t reach for a coconut.  His senses are at war with his spirit.
He’s a man split in two.

And if you look at a Papalaji’s whole life, it’s like a boat ride to Savaii.  As soon as he sets off he’s thinking “
I wonder when we’ll get there.”  Maybe he’ll think about what happened last night, whatever, anything so that he doesn’t notice the gentle landscape through which he’s travelling.  Let’s say a mountain ridge appears on his left.  Immediately he can’t let it go, he thinks “I wonder what’s behind that mountain  Maybe there’s a deep narrow valley like my home town.”

Hopeless, you see?  He forgets to join the young men singing the boat songs, he doesn’t hear the young girls chatter and giggle.  Now he’s started worrying if a storm will come up, how frail the boat seems, his eyes scan the sky anxiously, and he spends the rest of the ride worrying about it.  There’s no storm and now he’s in Savaii!  And he has a vague worry that he didn’t really do the boat ride at all!  He missed so much, lost in his thoughts, and far away from his body and the boat, that now he has the feeling that he might as well have stayed in his hut on Opulu!

Why should you or I love such a plaguing spirit?!  His thoughts bicker and devour each other like ill-behaved children!  Yet he acts as if they were very noble, like flowers or mountains or forests, and speaks reverently about them as if, beside them, a man’s courage or a maiden’s beauty mean nothing.  In fact he acts as if he thinks God’s commandments obligate such thinking!

I’m not sure, but if the palm trees and the mountains think, they at least don’t make so much fuss and noise about it!  If they did, however, they certainly wouldn’t carry such lovely green leaves and golden fruit!  Their fruit would fall before it’s ripe.  So it’s much more likely they don’t think much.

Ways of Thinking
There are many ways of thinking, and many targets for such thinking, but sad is the fate of he whose thoughts carry him far away: how will it be when morning comes? how will the Great Spirit treat me when I visit the underworld?  where was I before the highest messengers from the legends’ highest God gave me my soul? This kind of thinking is as useless as trying to see the sun with your eyes closed!  Impossible!  Yet from their youth into manhood they sit in the same place, they don’t see the sun any more, or the unfathomable ocean, or the sweet maiden, or joy of any kind.  They see nothing, nothing at all!  They don’t even like their Kava* any more, but just stare into the ground.
Kava  local mild psychedelic
Neither alive nor yet quite dead, they’re infected by the terrible thinking disease.  They say that such thinking makes the head bigger and, if somebody does lots of very fast thinking, the Papalaji say he has a great head.  Instead of pitying such people, they lay honours on them, the villages make them chief, and wherever a great head goes he has to think aloud in public so that all the people love it.

And when a great head dies?  Whoo,  the whole country goes into mourning for him!  They carve an image in rock of the great head and exhibit it in the village square for all to see.  And yes, these images are even larger than the original heads so that the people will admire them and realise how small their own heads are by comparison!

Evil Intentions
I became personally convinced while I was over there that the Papalaji have evil reasons for their thinking.  Their real goal is to track the Great Spirit’s powers, which they give the beautiful name “to comprehend”.  To comprehend something means to hold it so close it hits your nose, what a tasteless and despicable pastime!  They grab a locust, say, and pierce it with a needle, and pull one of its legs out.  what does it look like when it’s disconnected to the body? how was it connected to the body before?  let’s break its leg in two to ‘comprehend’ how thick it is.  That’s important to them, very important.  They will cut off a piece as small as a grain of sand and look at it through a long looking tube that makes it very distinct.

With this same big, clear, seeing eye they research everything, your tears, a piece of your skin, a hair, everything!  And they split it all into tiny pieces until they’re so small you can’t cut them any more.  And here begins the supreme knowledge that only the Great Spirit possesses.  Not even the Papalaji can enter such a knowledge realm, even his best wizard’s eye has been unable to see through.  For the Great Spirit does not allow his secrets to escape.  Never.  Nobody has ever climbed higher than the palm tree he’s wrapped his legs around!  Always he’s been forced to turn back at the top for there was no more trunk to climb.  For the Great Spirit does not approve of such curiosity and has stretched vines across all things, vines with no beginning and no end.  That’s why
everyone who searches his thinking remains stupid in the end, and must leave the real answers to the Great Spirit.

Now the smartest and bravest Papalaji will admit what I am saying here.  But most of these maniacs cannot be cured of their sick obsessions, and wander in a world that’s like a forest without trails.  Some have thought so much that they can no longer distinguish between man and beast!  They have even ended up believing that
man is an animal and an animal is a human

But most dangerous and terrible of all, every one of their thoughts, good and bad, is thrown onto their white mats.  “
They’re published” they say.  Many of these mats are then pressed together to form what the Papalaji call “books”, which are sent to all parts of the country where they’re devoured like sweet coconuts!   And everyone who takes in those thoughts is infected by them!  Many people, old and young, gnaw at them like rats at the sugar cane.  That’s why so few of them can still think sensibly in natural thoughts like every proper Samoan can do.

And then they pass as many of these thoughts onto their poor children who are forced to chew a certain number of mats each day.  Only the healthiest ones kick them out right away or let them fall through their heads like a sieve.  But the vast majority overload their heads with thoughts until no empty spot remains and light cannot enter any more.  They call this “
developing the mind” and the state of permanent confusion it creates is called “education”, a more and more widely spread practice.

Beware Papalaji “Education”.
Education”, to the Papalaji, means filling the mind with “knowing”.  An educated person knows how high the palm trees are, how heavy the coconut is, the names of all the big chiefs, and how many wars each has fought.  He knows the size of the moon and the stars and all the countries.  He “knows” every river, animal and plant by name.  If you ask a question of an educated man he will shoot you the answer before you’ve closed your mouth.  Every European uses the best part of his life to make his head into a rapid-action fire-tube.

The only thing that would help these think-patients  to throw away thoughts, to forget them  is not being taught, and hardly anybody can do it.  Most of them carry such a burden in their heads that their body becomes tired and weak and sick before their time.

And now, my beloved occasional-thinking brothers and sisters, after all have told you
truthfully, do you still feel the need to follow the Papalaji and to exercise the thinking like they do?   I tell you NO!  For we must avoid anything that makes our body weaker and our senses less joyous.  We must beware of everything that steals the joy form life, everything that takes the happy lights out of our spirit, in fact everything that can create a conflict between our head and out body.

The Papalaji proves to us with their very lives that the thinking disease is actually so dangerous that it decreases the value of Man.
  Just watch them!

Paul Foot - the death of an anti-racist pioneer
by Jenny Bourne
While the Left mourns the death of Paul Foot - undoubtedly an excellent journalist and stalwart of working-class struggle - we should not let these attributes eclipse his unique contribution to the anti-racist fight.

Many  people are probably unaware that it was he who pinpointed the centrality and impact of racism in two key spheres
-       that of politics
-       that of the media.
So much of what now passes for common-sense in anti-racist thinking and indeed methodological argument was in fact pioneered in the 1960s and 1970s by Paul Foot.

His book,
Immigration and Race in British Politics, published in 1965 in the wake of the Smethwick election (when the 'IF YOU WANT A NIGGER NEIGHBOUR, VOTE LABOUR' slogan was used by Peter Griffiths), was a landmark.  No academic tome, no giving the benefit of the doubt, no 'fear of newcomers' nonsense for him.  This was a committed treatise which pointed out the ways in which both Labour and Conservatives had consistently played the race card.  'Politics', he wrote, 'can drive the knife home or remove its menace'.  He drew the links between immigration, the racialisation of political discourse and the creation of popular racism.

In
The Rise of Enoch Powell, published just months after the infamous Rivers of Blood speech, Paul Foot revealed both the dangers of rabble rousing on a racism platform and the opportunism and dishonesty of the politician who chose to do so.  That such points would not have to be made today, because they’ve passed into common political currency, attests to this critical, painstaking research and lively writing from a lone International Socialist journalist in the 1960s.  No one since has bettered, let alone replicated, his committed journalism on racism.

And indeed no one has done more to expose the role of
journalists and the media in general in the construction of racism.  It was Paul Foot in 1976 who transformed the TV programme 'What the Papers Say' into a lesson on how 'Race hate and race violence do not rise or fall according to the numbers of immigrants coming into Britain but the extent to which people's prejudices are inflamed and made respectable by politicians and newspapers'.   In a number of programmes he traced how the press and politicians colluded in racism: the one to sell papers, the other to curry favour.  The result was populist race hatred which was immediately felt by Black Britons in terms of racial attacks on the ground.

Paul was unique because of his commitment, integrity and tenacious adherence to
revolutionary socialism.  And it was precisely his understanding of the nature of struggle and of power that gave his anti-racism its special edge.  We still use his perspectives to frame our research and writings into racism today.

Paul Foot, campaigning journalist, born 8 November 1937; died 18 July 2004.

Monkey Apes Man By Walking On 2 Legs
PRIMATE DEMONSTRATES UNUSUAL GAIT AFTER NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCE
Natasha, a 5-year-old black macaque at Safari Park near Tel Aviv, has become the first in recorded history to walk exclusively on its hind legs.  She changed after a stomach ailment nearly killed her, zookeepers said.

Monkeys usually alternate between upright movement and walking on all fours.  A picture in the Maariv daily shows Natasha standing
ramrod straight like a human.

2 weeks ago, Natasha and 3 other monkeys were diagnosed with severe stomach flu.  Natasha briefly slipped into critical condition.  "
I was sure that she was going to die," said her veterinarian.  "She could hardly breathe and her heart was not functioning properly."

When her condition finally stabilised, and as soon as she was released rom the clinic, she began walking upright only.

Other than the human-like walking, her behaviour has returned to normal.

GOOD NEWS BECAUSE, ONLY WHEN OUR DINOSAURS REALISE THEY MUST HONOUR & INDEMNIFY FOR THE CAUSES OF TERROR WHICH THEY’VE BEEN STOKING FOR DECADES

July 21 2004
The time has come to take a cold, hard look at whether the war on terrorism is being lost.  There is no evidence as yet of a reduction in the level of terrorist activity nor that any action by any country has resulted in a net fall in the number of terrorists.

By September 11, 2001, 70,000-100,000 young men had been through some form of
Islamist training camp since the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, and al-Qaeda had some kind of tie to movements in over 60 countries.  Certainly, some of al-Qaeda's leaders and regular [freedom] "fighters" have been killed or captured since then.  Nothing suggests, however, that Islamic extremism and terrorism have been eliminated in a single country  quite the opposite, new leaders and fighters have emerged.

The
International Institute of Strategic Studies recently estimated that al-Qaeda and its affiliates are now 18,000 strong, many joining as a result of the Afghan and Iraq invasions.  If anything, the war on terrorism has intensified in other areas.  Last month, al-Qaeda carried out some of its most successful post-9/11 attacks in Saudi Arabia, striking twice in a month at a soft target in its petroleum industry, killing Americans, other foreigners and Saudis.

However, the target was not the Saudi petroleum industry - not a barrel of export capacity was lost.
The target was the willingness of foreigners to stay in the country and contribute to the economic underpinnings of the kingdom and its ability to attract the investment it needs for reform.

Part of the success of
al-Qaeda's attacks lies in US reaction - Washington's initial response was not to fight back but to panic, and, for the second time in a month, to urge all Americans to leave the country.  Note that Washington has neither called for any specific new Saudi security efforts, nor has it offered major aid for counter terrorism efforts, nor new measures to help US industry and workers in the kingdom.  At a time of record oil prices and a crisis in world oil supply, the Bush administration seems to have no concrete plans to fight the war on terrorism in a country whose oil production and exports are critical to the US and global economy.

Nor is the problem simply in Saudi ArabiaEvery southern Gulf country now has its own Islamist extremist cells.  If Saudi Arabia proves vulnerable, they’re next.  Yet, the Bush administration has no publicly announced plans to deal with this threat in a region with 60% of the world's proven oil reserves.  It is all very well to talk about a global war on terrorism.  To win it, however, you have to fight it.
>> and the Dinos lost their nerve at the nonBattle of Fallujah!  see now?  see how?

Afghanistan meanwhile has almost become the "forgotten war" and is certainly not one the US is winning.  It has failed dismally to secure the country and carry out the nation building that could have brought true victory.
>> this writer doesn’t see the full implications, but he’s a Financial Times guy.  And all they neeed to get for now is that the Dinos are over, that’s it, goodbye, planet won’t stand for it no more.  He’ll hear about the good news in a few years time :)

The dispersal of al-Qaeda and Taliban elements has destabilised western Pakistan, where the resulting struggle has strengthened Islamists throughout the country and created a new regional threat.  Instead of providing the aid and economic support necessary to fight it, US strategy has been to try to shift the burden to Nato allies.
>> like Chirac’s going to throw away his world rep as Peace Maker, right.

And while Iraq grows daily more violent, there’s still no meaningful evidence that Iraq was a centre of terrorism or had strong ties to al-Qaeda before the US invaded.
>> see?  this guy was FOR the war!

Once again, the US failed to secure the country, and waited until an insurgency had begun before taking significant steps towards nation building.  The result is that the US has wasted more than a year before transferring power and creating effective plans for Iraqi security forces, and has spent only $410m in aid funds to win hearts and minds this year of the $18.4bn earmarked.
>> the Dinos are running out of money too!

The Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts have a military dimension, but the primary struggle is political, ideological and economic
>> we want to control their politics, replace their value system was our disgusting immoral competition where we’re already so far ahead they’ll never catch up, and, oh yes, control their money and get every Iraqi into using credit according to the Global Plan.

The US Cannot Win
The US cannot win by force or on the cheap;  it can only win by strengthening local allies and reformers, not trying to impose its own political values or security concerns.  Washington needs to take on fully the security and nation-building missions in Afghanistan and add a big aid dimension to its efforts in Pakistan.  It needs to understand that unless US involvement in Iraq is transformed into a sustained effort to help Iraqis rebuild on their terms, with years of military and economic aid, the net result will be an Iraq that is a centre of terrorism.

The war on terror cannot be won as long as popular anger at the US in the Islamic world is shaped by perceptions that America is too close to Israel to move forward on the Arab-Israeli peace process.

The war on terrorism cannot be won if Arabs believe US calls for democracy and reform in the Arab world are only a cover for moves to create puppet regimes.
>> which they are!
Anthony Cordesman
>> an alternative theory is that this is the beginning of Kerry’s position, possibly leaking in advance to prepare the ground?  but don’t call it No Change!  it is massive change.  tho there will still be remnants of dino thinking, dino behaviour is rapidly passing, never to return in our future.

Jewish Activist Denied Entry Into Israel
CALIFORNIAN PRO-PALESTINIAN ACTIVIST LOSES APPEAL
by Dan Waldman

A pro-Palestinian American activist lost her appeal Friday in Jerusalem of a court order barring her entry into Israel, her lawyer said. She has been detained since defying the order to leave.

The decision against Jamie Spector, 32, a Jewish social worker from
San Francisco, came 2 days after another judge overturned a similar ban against a member of the same organisation, the International Solidarity
Movement.

Spector arrived in Israel on July 10 to participate in protests against  the separation barrier Israel is constructing in the West Bank. Airport officials stopped her “on a security recommendation”, said Tova Ellinson, spokeswoman for the Ministry of the Interior. She declined to elaborate.

"I have not, at any time, been involved in anything illegal," Spector told The Associated Press after the ruling. "Palestinians have a legal right  to protest, and I have every right to aid them in nonviolent legal  actions."

Lasky said her client was to be deported Friday.

Members of the
Solidarity Movement are being routinely turned away at the airport. Indeed its web site advises travellers to deny such affiliations and to invent "a really good story about why you are coming."

In the appeal, Lasky argued that Spector should be treated differently because she is Jewish. Jews have an automatic right to immigrate and  obtain Israeli citizenship.  But Judge Sara Dotan ruled activists of the Solidarity Movement should be denied entry because their actions disrupt military operations and put soldiers at risk, Lasky said.

Another Solidarity Movement activist, Ann Petter, a 44 year old graphic designer from New York, was granted  permission to enter Israel on Wednesday after being detained for nearly a month. But it was on condition she stay at least 1,000 yards from the security fence, and that she not participate in demonstrations.

Lasky said she was unaware of any differences between the two cases, and that an appeal to the Israeli Supreme Court is being considered.

In the past, group volunteers have placed themselves between Palestinians and Israeli forces to try to prevent the army from carrying out operations.

In March 2003, group member Rachel Corrie, was crushed to death by an Israeli army bulldozer in a Gaza refugee camp while trying to stop soldiers from demolishing a house. Her death was ruled accidental.

The West Bank barrier was ruled illegal by the International Court of Justice on July 9, but Israel has vowed to continue building it.

Bush Does It Cos He Don’t Know The Lord!
The Lord (or whatever you call the Force that’s bigger than you) has a way of revealing those of us who really know him, and those who really don't.

In one of Bush’s speeches last week, he was going on about how his faith is so "
important" to him, and how his favourite Bible verse is John 16:3.

You mis-spoke there, George, or did you?

The speech writer, of course, meant John 3:16, but none of the Bush camp was familiar enough with scripture to spot the error.

And what does John 16:3 say?
"And they will do this because they have not known the Father nor Me".

I'm disappointed by your claim that Israel has no right to exist.
Why should any state exist?
Great Britain?  The USA?  Australia?  Iran?  India?  Iraq?
You think Israel and Israel alone is responsible for the world's woes?
That's pretty much nonsense.

>> first it wasn't my claim.
but, secondly, i printed it precisely because it's making the point u r making.  note its conclusion again: “take away the biblical right and suddenly mutual coexistence, even a one-state solution, doesn't seem that far-fetched.  If that kind of self-reproach is forthcoming, Israel can expect the Palestinians to be forgiving and magnanimous in return.  The alternative is perpetual war."
i'll put you down as an AGREE, then, shall i?

Bad Lay
In the best of all possible worlds, or even in a relatively sane society, Kenneth L. Lay should be going to prison.

However, we live in BushWorld, a kinda negative TAZ, a parallel universe where up is down, black is white, wounded Vietnam vets like John Kerry and Max Cleland are unpatriotic whereas Chickenhawks sporting flag lapel pins like Cheney and Bush are heroes.

Indeed, the very next day after Lay was led into court, the Pentagon announced that George W. Bush's military records had been "
inadvertently" destroyed in a tragic microfilming accident (did anyone else immediately think of the 18-minute gap in the Nixon tapes?).
>> yes!

Therefore, I fully expect that some time between November, when Bush loses the election, and January, when John Kerry takes the Oath of Office, Kenny Boy will be granted a presidential pardon, as will Cheney, the entire front office of Halliburton, Tom DeLay, Jeb Bush, Neil Bush, Marvin Bush, Barbara Bush and George H.W. Bush.  Hell, maybe even Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden too.

The real mystery here is not Mr. Lay's culpability in the worst bankruptcy in American history, but why it has taken this long to bring him to justice.

Bush was asked about Kenny Boy’s indictment while making a photo-opp-stop in Michigan, but he rudely turned his tail and fled without answering.

Keep fleeing, George.  You may be following Kenny Boy into court yourself.

No Such Things As AIDS And HIV Viruses?!/FEEDBACK
Political And Corporate Self-Interest
In US Funding Policy Towards Global HIV/Aids Epidemic
by Bill Bowtell
At the international conference on HIV/Aids in Bangkok in July, the Bush administration secured its latest victory in its relentless campaign against multilateralism and international cooperation, one whose consequences are likely to be fatal for many people around the world.

To its scuttling of the Kyoto greenhouse treaty, refusal to recognise the International Criminal Court, abandonment of the nuclear test-ban treaty and emasculation of the Security Council over Iraq can now be added its sabotage of the international effort to contain the spread of HIV/Aids.

America Proposes
The United States delegation arrived in Bangkok proclaiming its wonderful commitment to spend $15 billion on global HIV/Aids programmes over the next 5 years.

Only this money came with a large, indigestible obstacle.  It had to be spent in two ways:
- promoting abstinence from sexual activity and drug taking as the primary method of HIV control;
- purchasing HIV drugs from American drug companies, not from generic low-cost producers.

Both these desired outcomes reflect self-interest rather than a sincere desire to help those affected.  There is no scientific or evidence-based research to support the claim that abstinence works to prevent the spread of HIV/Aids.  And in economic terms, the greater the supply of generic alternatives, the more people with HIV/Aids can be treated for a finite amount of dollars.

It is not hard to see, then, that behind this US “offer” lay the political and financial power of core elements of the Bush administration’s domestic support  Christian fundamentalists and the large drug companies.

First, as a tight presidential election race develops, Bush needs Christian fundamentalist votes to turn out for him in swing states.

Second, to mobilise this religious base, he needs massive amounts of money for media time and organisational support.  And American drug companies are the biggest contributors to the Bush Republicans bigger even than the oil or automotive industries.  The drug companies see the $15 billion as a lucrative, back-door industry support scheme, especially if generic producers can be excluded from supplying lower-cost alternative therapies.

Under Bush, the drug companies have seen their investment repaid many times over.  The administration has secured extensions of Medicare drug benefits to elderly Americans that are worth some $500 billion over the next decade  yet at the same time, the US government is prohibited from acting as a single purchaser of drugs in a way that could force drug prices down.

Moreover, after successful US drug-company lobbying, free trade agreements signed with seven countries demolish local drug-purchasing schemes [Australia, and its Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme), is among those affected].  This will result in higher drug costs across the board.

The World Answers
But the US strategy met obstacles of its own.  Many observers at the Bangkok conference, led by UN secretary-general Kofi Annan and France’s Chirac, were not impressed by the US’s double-edged funding offer - and in effect rejected it.

As a result, the US walked away from the global programme on Aids (Unaids) and from multilateral cooperation to contain HIV.  And the smile froze on the face of Randall Tobias, the US Aids czar and former chief executive of (the Bush-contributing) Eli Lilley & Company, who made it clear that the US will now direct its $15 billion fund to source premium-priced HIV drugs from the American drug companies, and HIV education services from a variety of American religious organisations and their international affiliates.

Ramallah Is A Bloody Mess
The israelis, in their infinite wisdom, have decided to build a chunk of THE WALL right down the middle of the road to Qalandia, the main checkpoint between Quds and Ramallah. so at the moment half the road is unusable and there’s a huge row of the enormous concrete structures they use to build the wall lined up all along one side.  No idea what they intend to use as an alternative way in - i guess there will be a great big military checkpoint there in the Wall instead of the present great big military checkpoint surrounded by fencing and concrete blocks.

And all round Ramallah
the bloody settlements seem to be breeding like some kind of frogspawn/ tadpole scenario, little blobs of caravans and small houses on top of every hill, gazing down on the increasingly crushed arab population in the valleys.

The settlements round Bethlehem are breeding too - 28 of them in a small area now, with vast great roads between each, cutting villages in half and enclosing small groups of palestinian houses in
loops of electric fences and alarms so you get shot if you get too close - and sometimes they’re only feet from houses, so
what happens if a kid kicks a football too near?  Not hard to guess.

More women completely covered now, but what’s interesting is that there’s also an increase in the number, especially in Quds, wearing the beautiful black embroidered traditional palestinian dresses, even mass-produced versions.  If they can't have their own land, they can at least move deeper into their own culture (except of course the israelis keep trying to appropriate bits of that too... of which more in a minute).

The
'Arab Israelis' that most people seem to ignore, may not get killed and maimed with the regularity of their brethren on the other side of the wall, but their lands are still being taken chunk by chunk, and they still get a fraction of the resources allocated to Jewish Israelis by the state, though they pay the same rates of tax.

For instance, a town of 20,000 primarily Jewish people will be given the official status of
'city' and be allocated state resources accordingly - more for rubbish collection, renovation of old buildings, health, education, social services, sports facilities etc.  But a similar sized settlement of Palestinians will be called a 'village' and get a fraction of the same amount, and will often not be able to pay public employees for months on end, and can barely collect the trash, let alone build public swimming pools.  And 'unrecognised' villages get it even worse - settlements are built right on them to force them out, with no legal redress of any strength, and this is happening particularly in the Galilee and the Negev, strategic areas with lots of resources that the israelis don't want to waste on Palestinians, be they Bedouin or Galilean.

Yesterday I went on a fascinating tour run by al-Quds Uni to Um-al-Fahm, the second largest Palestinian town in '48 and pretty militant - several people have been killed there and many imprisoned on protests and demonstrations.  Linda, an Olive Tours guest, is with me at the moment and we took her there  she lived near there 20 years ago and was on these demonstrations.  The tour then went on to several villages in the Galilee which were Arab villages and were panicked out and destroyed in 1948.  One has been almost entirely demolished, the land given to a kibbutz and turned into a tourist park because of the pretty streams
(which used to turn the local mill).

The second village, Tantoura, was discovered by a (jewish) Haifa university researcher about 4 years ago to have been the site of a massacre in 1948 which the israelis had covered up for all that time - the village, which dates from Canaanite times and also includes Roman, Byzantine etc etc ruins was right on the sea, a fishing village, and the Israelis bombarded it to force the inhabitants to
flee and killed many.  it’s now a holiday village and beach park.

The third is now an artists' village, with all the beautiful old arab houses inhabited by Israeli artists and one sad-looking woman in Palestinian costume standing by the bus stop selling
'traditional'
produce to the tourists (hence the comment above about appropriation of culture...).

Could carry on saying so much but you'll be delighted to hear, should you have reached thus far, that i will shut up now.
Sarah, an English girl, has returned to Palestine, working for justice.  Her emails from her visit two years ago are archived here.  Israel fans might like to give it a visit.

Big bang not so big!FEEDBACK
Dear Steve Barker,
>> we know from observations that gravity also bends light.
This has been demonstrated (apparently) and is offered as proof of Einstein's theory.

>> Is it possible that gravity also splits light into its constituent colours?
No.  To the best of my knowledge it bends light, it doesn't refract it.  We’re talking about light travelling through a vacuum, not interacting with certain materials.

>> We know from calculations and observations that 90% of the matter (by weight) in the known universe is unaccounted for.
That's what the big-bang theorists are claiming.  Both in Canada and Japan they have constructed special chambers inside mountains to try to catch the elusive neutrino, a particle with no charge that’s so small it passes through normal matter.... then there’s 'dark matter', but they haven't found any of that either... If you can't find 90% of the matter you need to make the big-bang equations add up, it might just be that...
>> finish the sentence!

>> It seems likely that space is littered with bodies which are either too small to see, but still very heavy, or have no light source and so are invisible to us.
I have no doubt that the space between star systems is littered with objects - that's why you can't see the centre of our galaxy.  Intergalactic space, on the other hand, must be pretty much empty or you wouldn’t manage to see other galaxies at the kind of distances we’re talking about.

So here's my theory: (hence to be known as Jerry's Theory Of Spatial Objects)  The bigger the fewer.  It's a geometric curve with large galaxies at one end and specks of dust (infinity) at the other.  Seems obvious to me, but nobody seems to have said it so far... So there MUST be far more planets than stars, more moons than planets, and a hell of a lot of small stuff out there beyond each star system's gravitational pull that is not lit and is too small to be seen from here.  Some of it could be just not quite big enough to be a star - about the size of Jupiter say.  Capt. Kirk had better be careful.

>> Nevertheless they still have gravitational fields which are capable of bending light.
Err, no.  You need something the size of a star for that amount of gravitational field.

>> which is absorbing light in the spectrum furthest from red.
Actually, somebody has suggested that, as with doppler redshift and the big-bang theory, we’re talking about observing distant galaxies and quasars that are billions of light years away and hence the light might have simply lost some of it's energy over time.

I have nothing against scientists, big-bang may turn out to be untrue but it is an interesting theory.  Scientists on the whole can tell the difference between a theory and a law.  So can I.  You evidently can and produce your own theories.  Fraser, on the other hand, has got it in for those who confuse the two and produce some really stupid articles etc. on the subject in which far-fetched theories are treated like laws of astrophysics.  I couldn't agree more.

Cancer Loves Sugar, Abhors Oxygen
Beat It By Gaining
Oxygen, Losing Sugar
Wellness Directory of Minnesota, Copyright © 1995, 1998, 1999, 2000 7-18-4

Every doctor learned in medical school about Otto Warburg's discovery; a discovery of gigantic proportions, because way back in the ‘50s Otto discovered the main biochemical cause of cancer, or what differentiates a cancer cell from a normal, healthy cell.  So big a discovery was this that Otto Warburg was awarded the Nobel Prize.

“The one and only prime cause of Cancer is the replacement of normal oxygen respiration of the body's cells by an anaerobic [i.e., oxygen-deficient] cell respiration.” Dr. Otto Warburg

But what else does Warburg's discovery tell us.

It tells us cancer metabolises much differently from normal cells.  Normal cells need
oxygen.  Cancer cells despise oxygen.  In fact, oxygen therapy is a favourite among many of the alternative clinics we've researched.

Another thing this tells us is that cancer metabolises through a process of
fermentation.

If you've ever made wine, you'll know that fermentation requires…
sugar.

The metabolism of cancer is approximately 8 times greater than the metabolism of normal cells.

Okay, so here is what we can put together knowing the above:  The body is constantly overworked trying to feed this cancer which is constantly on the verge of starvation and thus constantly asking the body to feed it.  When the food supply is cut off, the cancer begins to starve unless it can make the body produce sugar to feed itself.

The wasting syndrome,
cachexia, is the body producing sugar from proteins (you heard it right, not from carbohydrates or fats, but from proteins) in a process called glycogenesis. This sugar feeds the cancer. The body finally dies of starvation, trying to feed the cancer.

Now, knowing that one's cancer needs sugar, does it make sense to feed it sugar?  Does it make sense to have a high carbohydrate diet?

The reason Food Therapies even exist today (beyond the fact they work) is because someone once saw the connection between sugar and cancer.  There are many food therapies, but not a single one allows many foods high in carbohydrates and not a single one allows sugars,
BECAUSE SUGAR FEEDS CANCER.

Why doesn't your physic doctor ian tell you this?  Maybe your doctor feels it is his job to cure your cancer, not yours.  Maybe because your doctor learned about Warburg, but never put the rest
together, never placed nutrition into the equation.  Maybe because your physician didn't study nutrition.  Heck, as late as 1978, the AMA's official position (stated in courts of law) was that nutrition
had nothing to do with health or disease.

However, those who've paid attention to this sugar craving cancer stuff have come up with some remarkable therapies for cancer.
Laetrile is just one.  Hydrazine Sulfate, which stops the process of
glycogenesis in greater than 50% of all patients with cachexia is another.

Today, at the University of Minnesota, they are experimenting with a chemotherapy delivered in a "
smartbomb."  Here's the scoop: the drug is wrapped in a coating that stays intact as it travels through the body, that is until it reaches a location of no oxygen.  When it reaches this "no oxygen" location, the coating falls apart releasing the chemotherapy to destroy the cancer, because the only place in your body where there is no oxygen is the cancer site.

Then there are the food therapies: aimed at starving cancer.  Knowing what cancer loves, the patient avoids them.  Cancers loves cooked foods (this is a relatively recent finding) and cancer loves sugar.

If you hate your cancer, starve it to death before it does that to you.

how to end terrorism at a single stroke
// PLEASE CIRCULATE TO ALL CONCERNED PLANETARY CITIZENS //

an apology & solution offered to all arabs to end defensive jihad terrorism
by a citizen of the west

WE WHO CALL FOR PEACE MUST OFFER MORE THAN JUST THE HOPE THAT THE PROBLEM WILL GO AWAY.  PEACE IS A RESULT, NOT A SOLUTION!  IT IS THE RESULT OF ACTIONS TAKEN TO RESOLVE A PROBLEM.

TO END DEFENSIVE JIHAD TERRORISM WE MUST IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM, THEN DEAL WITH THE CAUSES.

THE PROBLEM/PEACE SOLUTION
1. except where we are able to admit our own far far worse & far far longer term terrorism, we must stop seeing it purely as terrorism.
”The killers are those who kill - and that includes our pilots as well as their bombers. We don't want to kill civilians, but we know that our wars will do that, and death does not come more pleasantly or less painfully because the victims are killed by the supposedly benevolent West rather than the supposedly cruel East. Now we are beginning to pay the price.”  Robert Fisk

2. al-queda leaders have made very clear all along that they are fighting a defensive jihad, the only one permitted by islam - the kind saladin fought successfully against the christian crusades.  indeed, as I read mohamed’s words, such action is obligatory on all muslims when the Faith / Faithful are under attack.  once a defensive jihad has been declared, aggressive attacks on the Enemy become permitted, even required.

(if your response is THEYRE ATTACKING US!, then ask yourself how many arab soldiers are positioned in your country.  and if u say, after all this, that our military were invited in by some MEGA FAT QUISLING SHEIKH, then I say u r a baboon :))  such ignorance is a geometrically accelerating danger to me and to all people on this planet.

3. we ALREADY KNOW against what those thousands of terrorists and hundreds of thousands of supporters are defending. and their demands are eminently reasonable:

A.  REMOVAL OF ALL FOREIGN TROOPS FROM ARAB LANDS (except UN)

B.  IMPOSITION OF A UN AGREED PEACE SETTLEMENT AROUND ISRAEL’S BORDERS. (militarily if necessarily, and for as long as required -  like yugoslavia).

these are an absolute minimum, are eminently reasonable, would already stop the massive spread of terrorism in its tracks, and would save hundreds (possibly hundreds of thousands?) of western lives over the next decade.  meanwhile the withdrawn personnel and equipment should be put to protecting our own homelands and borders.

C. FINANCIAL COMPENSATION FOR ALL FORCED CONTRACTS AND CRIMES AGAINST THEM, AND A SIMULTANEOUS CANCELLATION OF ALL WORLD DEBT (for the same reasons - and let’s pray the africans and the indians will be more ‘understanding’ than the arabs!)
removing soldiers and settling the israel question only delivers a level playing field, it would not be nearly enough to compensate for all the bullying terrorism we have practised on their civilisation over the centuries and since the discovery of oil.
what’s fundamentally required is not some begrudging inch-by-inch retreat but a Magnificent Public Gesture to show Sincerity and Contrition (far better than having it forced on us at a later date when SOME terrorism continued to develop).  the establishing of a fair “market price” for oil would be an excellent step in this general direction - say double what we’ve allowed so far?

the above actions (or UN promises to implement) would, at a single stroke or in several steps,
i]  cut off the ‘religious’ base of the jihad
ii] answer the political grievances
iii] resolve the economic crimes.
they would thus drain the massively spawning community of fanatics of public support, the planet would be perceived by all its inhabitants to be on a proper and fair evolutionary path at last, the terrorism problem would begin to wither on the vine, and surprisingly quickly the present problem would be looked back on as having been little more than a learning curve on humanity’s progress towards globality.

obviously none of this can begin to happen till the dinosaurs have finally been shrugged onto the Fossil Record, with the name George Bush consigned to History as the planet’s Greatest Bogyman & Schmuck.  sounds about right to me :)
