INSIDE
FALLUJA
APRIL 12,
2004
CEASEFIRE???!
WHAT CEASEFIRE?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I knew the entire city of
Falluja
had been sealed and was suffering from
collective
punishment in the form of
no water or electricity for
several days now.
With only two journalists there that I'd read and heard reports from, I
felt pulled to go and witness the
atrocities
that were surely being committed.
We joined a small group of internationals to ride a large bus carrying a
load of humanitarian supplies there, and with the hopes of bringing some
of the wounded out prior to the next American onslaught, which was due to
kick off at any time now.
Even leaving Baghdad now is dangerous. The military has shut down
the main highway between here and Jordan. The highway, even just
outside Baghdad, is desolate and littered with destroyed fuel tanker
trucks -- their smouldering shells littered the highway. We rolled
past a large M-1 Tank that was still burning under an overpass which had
just been hit by the resistance.
At the first U.S. checkpoint the soldiers said they'd been there for 30
hours straight. After being searched, we continued along bumpy dirt
roads. While we were passing one of the small homes in Abu Ghraib,
a small child yelled at the
bus,
"We will be
mujahedin until we
die!"
Back on the highway, it was
strewn with smoking fuel tankers, destroyed military tanks and armoured
personnel carriers, and a lorry that had been hit which was currently
being looted by a nearby village, people running to and from the highway
carrying away boxes. It was a scene of pure devastation, with
barely any other cars on the road.
Once we turned off the highway, which the U.S. was perilously holding
onto, there was no U.S. military presence visible at all as we were in
controlled-controlled
territory. Our bus wound
its way through farm roads, and each time we passed someone they would
yell, "God
bless you for going to
Falluja!"
Everyone we passed was flashing us the victory sign, waving, and giving
the thumbs-up.
As we neared Falluja, there were groups of children on the sides of the
road handing out water and bread to people coming into Falluja. They
began literally throwing stacks of flat bread into the bus. The
fellowship and community spirit was unbelievable. Everyone was
yelling for us, cheering us on, groups speckled along the road.
As we neared
Falluja
a huge mushroom caused by a large U.S. bomb rose from the city. So
much for the cease fire.
The closer we got to the city, the more mujahedin checkpoints we passed
-- at one, men with kefir around their faces holding Kalashnikovs began
shooting their guns in the air, showing their eagerness to
fight.
The city itself was virtually empty, aside from groups of mujahedin
standing on every other street corner. It was a city at war.
We rolled towards the one small clinic where we were to deliver our
medical supplies. It’s managed by Mr. Maki Al-Nazzal, who was hired
just 4 days ago to do so. He is not a doctor.
He hadn't slept much, along with all of the doctors at the small
clinic.
It started with just three doctors, but since the Americans bombed one of
the hospitals, and were currently sniping people as they attempted to
enter/exit the main hospital, effectively there were only 2 small clinics
treating all of Falluja. The other has been set up in a car
garage.
As I was there, an endless stream of women and children who'd been sniped
by the Americans were being raced into the dirty clinic, the cars
speeding over the curb out front as their wailing family members carried
them in.
This scene continued, off and on, into the night as the sniping
continued.
As evening approached the nearby mosque loudspeaker announced that the
mujahedin had completely destroyed a U.S. convoy. Gunfire filled
the streets, along with jubilant yelling. As the mosque began
blaring prayers, the determination and confidence of the area was
palpable.
One small boy of 11, his face covered by a kefir and toting around a
Kalashnikov that was nearly as big as he was, patrolled areas around the
clinic, making sure they were secure. He was confident and very eager for
battle. I wondered how the U.S. soldiers would feel about fighting an 11
year-old child? For the next day, on the way out of Falluja, I saw
several groups of children fighting as mujahedin.
After we delivered the aid, three of my friends agreed to ride out on the
one functioning ambulance for the clinic to retrieve the
wounded.
Although the ambulance already had three bullet holes from a U.S. sniper
through the front windshield on the driver's side, having westerners on
board was the only hope that soldiers would allow them to retrieve more
wounded Iraqis.
The previous driver was wounded when one of the sniper's shots grazed his
head.
Bombs were heard sporadically exploding around the city, along with
random gunfire.
We ended up spending the night with one of the local men who had filmed
the atrocities. He showed us footage of a dead baby who he claimed
was torn from his mother's chest by Marines. Other horrendous
footage of slain Iraqis was shown to us as well.
My entire time in Falluja there was the constant buzzing of military
drones.
There had been reports of
cluster
bombs being dropped too, and
two of the last victims that arrived at the clinic were reported by the
locals to have been hit by cluster bombs they were horribly burned
and their bodies shredded.
Each time I would begin to slip into sleep, a jet would fly over and I
wondered if the full scale bombing would commence. Meanwhile, the
drones continued to buzz throughout Falluja.
The next morning we walked back to the clinic. One of my friends
who'd done another ambulance run said that a Marine she encountered had
told them to leave, because the military was about to use air support to
begin
'clearing the
city.'
The already insane situation continued to degrade, and by the time the
wounded from the clinic were loaded onto our bus and we prepared to
leave, everyone felt the invasion was looming near. American bombs
continued to fall not far from us, and sporadic gunfire continued.
Jets were circling the outskirts of the city.
We drove out, past loads of
mujahedin
at their posts along the streets. In a long line of vehicles loaded
with families, we slowly crept out of the embattled city.
When we took a wrong turn at one point and tried to go down a road
controlled by a different group of mujahedin, we were promptly surrounded
by men aiming them at us. The doctors and patients on board
explained to them we were coming from Falluja and on a humanitarian aid
mission, so they let us go.
What I can report from Falluja is that there is no ceasefire, and
apparently there never was. Iraqi women and children are being shot
by American snipers. Over 600 Iraqis have now been killed by
American aggression, and the residents have turned two football fields
into graveyards. Ambulances are being shot by the Americans.
And now they are preparing to launch a full-scale invasion of the
city.
All of which is occurring under the guise of catching the people who
killed the four Blackwater Security personnel and hung two of their
bodies from a bridge.

Inner Eye on The Big Picture
anyone who claims to know exactly what’s birthing itself on our planet at the present time is part of the problem :) unless there really is a conspiracy that controls everything and nobody else can affect it. which i do not believe. indeed never has robert anton wilson’s proviso rung more truly - that the one certainty about conspiracies is: no one of them has yet achieved dominance. why? because the world would be a much more ruthlessly ‘peaceful’ place, meaning pacified. when peace comes b4 justice it’s pacification, like failed in vietnam, and seems to be failing in iraq today)
behind the increasing info-gush of a thousand ‘developments’, often contradictory in the direction they point, can we agree that homo saps has arrived, actually inevitably, at some bifurcation point? the scope of his activity has been geometrically developing for a century now, and, on a planet of limited resources, some kind of “critical mass” must inevitably be reached, which has either now begun or is already at full gallop.
fast forwarding present trends by only 50 years silhouettes this human development: by then there will be a ‘unified’ planet under one ‘government’. everything points to that, both the changes we hate and those that we love. what is to be the nature of that ‘unity’ and ‘government’ is precisely “what’s birthing itself on our planet at the present time”!
over this very question, mostly without realising it, western civilisation is rapidly splitting into 2 cultures, which represent, ultimately, the two futures. the struggle for dominance between these two will be Titanic and there are no guarantees, it can only be a learning experience. what has changed recently is that the voice of the rest of the planet is increasingly and insistently echoing it’s definition of world “unity” and “government” down the corridors of power.
The Great Bifurcation
the cynics can always argue, of course, that 2050 will probably turn out to be the usual unholy human muddle, with a bit of each and a to-and-fro between them, but I think one of the things that are being clarified, in this very month, is that the tecno-bio forces the human species is unleashing cannot be allowed to fall into the hands of just anyone and everyone. an overall species control must be achieved, either applied by force (which will increasingly be bound to fail), or by the creation of a fair and just society where such responsibility is socially and personally accepted. for the global society of 2050, the “usual human muddle” will have long stopped being an option.
the bush/blair coalition is only the biggest (by far the biggest) example of the old, long-established “right to rule” mentality, but all governments belong in this old headspace, which is why increasingly governments appear out of sync with their populations. they are. and they will increasingly be pulled either towards the Great Hegemony, the Evil Empire or… in the other direction
it is the Greatest Bifurcation the human race has ever faced unless there are secret tapes of a cultural struggle over leaving the ocean. for this bifurcation has been building for millennia as “brute competition” ran out of space, forcing modern man to move beyond flight or fight to share or fight. or share or die.
Share or Die
the deaths are already mounting, and, though I hate to even think this in every fibre of my being, it’s crystal clear there will be no sudden change of mind on either side soon (yea, even with kerry). since we humans seem programmed to evolve by bitter experience, there’s simply no avoiding the FACT that there will be many thousands of deaths on every side before the thousand ‘developments,’ behavioural/ idealistic social currents, economic infrastructural collapses/ eruptions, and bio-digital nuclear space info-tec intrusions which swirl “chaotically” around this bifurcation point have finally resolved themselves one way or the other. if Dinosaur culture finally dominates, of course, there will be many many more deaths as is lucidly evident in iraq as I write. but even if it loses, many thousands will die.
“yes, and how many deaths will it take till they see that too many people have died? the answer my friend is blowing in the wind” bob dylan.
it feels, to me, like it’s the human species’ historic karma, a Debt that can only be expunged in conscious suffering or established in the human DNA as homo saps’ dominant character trait.
I do NOT rule out divine intervention or flying saucers. but I/we can’t afford to rely on them. an Amazing Potential is at our fingerprints, our lives will increasingly fuse our personal with our political and our planetary, work will become celebration and celebration work.
and here’s the work part. I believe it will be increasingly critical for all of us, for reasons of emotional health, that we work, inside ourselves, to hold on grimly in our hearts to the Big Picture. in human birth there is a potentially dispiriting profusion of blood, pain and panic until the process is complete. keeping the Big Pic steady & clear in our minds (and hearts) can help us retain our balance and our equanimity, that natural ability to feeeeel our way to the positive way forward. depression is almost certainly the most dangerously prevalent un-health in our society, so let’s not be swayed too much or too often off the BP by the inevitable deaths here and there, falluja, madrid, bali, chicago, chechnya, kabul or birmingham, ok? (yes, even including yassin :)
after all, as the BP tells us, compared to the horrific number of unjust deaths throughout the 2000 year build-up, even 100,000 more is way less than 1%.
The Big Pic Shining Through The Fog Of War
could anyone disagree with the above? so let’s see if we can push a little further. what will the Big Picture have been as history looks back from a Future, Fully Evolved 2050?
to answer that, we must seek the major, overpowering, political/military development/threat occurring right now? it’s not zimbabwe, it’s not refugees, it’s not AIDS, it’s not even Depression and it’s not China surely the Big Pic is the american government’s reach for planetary hegemony. because it’s not the liberal freedom-loving socially responsible, idealistic, evolution-friendly wing of american culture which is doing the reaching. the corporate-managed, world bank-funded wing has seized control and is on an all-or-nothing gamble to establish U.S. hegemony WHILE ITS HISTORIC VAMPIRE ELITE REMAINS ENTRENCHED. FOREVER in their definition of WORLD GOVERNMENT!
to me that's the ONLY real threat since the Soviet Empire collapsed. you might argue if it’s that bad, but there’s no argument that that’s where the only danger is. right?
besides the second biggest threat, the increasingly unified resistance it’s creating and building right now, i see no other worth mentioning.
if this is agreed, a Very Significant Moral Conclusion has been arrived at: namely, we must be hyper-critical of our leaders, must NOT give them any benefits of any doubts, and, if mounting murders convinces us they are falling too deeply into the Trap, we must conclude that everything which slows or even reverses that development is 'Good,' and anything that furthers it is "Evil". to use simple terms.
take iraq. for america to fail there would, for me, by the standards we just outlined, be 'Good'. and it would be good NO MATTER HOW PSYCHOPATHIC THE SUCCESSFUL REISISTERS WERE. of course good people will be killed, on all sides, but our BP has already prepared us that THAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN ANYWAY. america is invading and totally trashing a sovereign country and international law. and for the world to see such anarchic irresponsible behaviour FAIL can only be salutary and beneficial in general. (if things had gone according to plan american troops would already be in syria, iran, venezuela and haiti.)
now none of this has anything to do with comparing one bad leader with another. or saying one is 'better'. because I don’t want ‘my country’ to invade other countries does not mean I want iraq to rule america! nor does it mean I think saddam was a better ruler than bush. it’s got nothing to do with fukkin personalities! its’ about some kinda civilised international law and respect. let’s not get stuck on, well, even with bush our culture is still better than genghis khan or chinky choo. that has nothing to do with it. our DUTY in our great almost-democracy is to fukking stand up when we see anybody trying to hijack it into something else and threaten the planet. it’s our DUTY! first u define where the threat must lie, then you decide whether the only potential threat IS one, and then u can begin to see your way through the Fog of War.
keeping your eye on the Big Picture :)
amen:)
fraser. april 14, 2004.
oh, but I’ve missed out at least half the story. as you get closer to the End of this Life, an Even Bigger Picture emerges. in the end it’s got nothing really to do with all the dramas down here. this is all an intelligent hologram, nobody really ‘dies’. we were all really One all the time. april fool! don’t ‘believe’ in this world, but act AS IF U BELIEVED INNIT! innit?

CLUBBERS FALL UNDER PSYTRANCE SPELL // FEEDBACK
EMAIL OF THE WEEK
Psytrance, Rave and Spiritual/Social Transformation
It’s good to see that the psytrance spirit is returning to our dancefloors. I too believe that when the spiritual aspects of psytrance recombine with the world of rave/dance/trance, then the real transformational potentials of the whole rave/dance scene will become increasingly obvious. For the Rave experience is one part of a much larger movement towards personal, social, political, cultural and spiritual transformation that is slowly but surely building. It is a cultural revolution, similar to the previous industrial revolution in that it occurs in a multitude of tiny steps over time, which may take another generation or two before it really impacts. However, each of us can live it now in our own lives through choosing to no longer buy into the social control and programming that sustains the limitations of our cultural worldview.
What is going on here is so vast and extraordinary that it’s hard to really grasp. Our limited materialist culture is about to go multidimensional, as we recognise (or our souls remember?) that we live within a Reality so much larger than anything we have ever been taught is possible. We are part of a vast interconnected field of energy that is One. This Oneness is our true nature, underlying the apparent separation of identities which sustains the culture of us and them. This is nothing new to those scientists who have been exploring the quantum realms, and chaos and systems theories, nor to the mystics who have experienced the lived reality of this for millennia. However, the translation of these experiences and understandings into the everyday world (Consensus Reality) will herald a revolution unlike anything we have yet seen or even imagined was possible.
How and when this is going to happen are now the key questions. I believe that rave and dance culture will be one of the central forces in the unfolding of this transformation/revolution. Once the spiritual wisdom, love and passion that is held within the psytrance community rejoins the energy and power of the rave/dance world (whether that is trance, funky, tribal, techno, hip-hop or drum and bass), and this movement is then joined by individuals and groups from the therapeutic and spiritual communities, along with the psychedelic elders, who have yet to really experience the transformative power of the communal dance, then the tribes will begin to gather and things will really begin to change.
As I see it, each of these groups is at present a separate point of humanity¹s evolutionary potential. As they join forces, they combine their potentials and synergistically create a point that reaches further than any of them alone. In the alchemical space of the Rave, this point is the heightened collective consciousness which, unified by the music, creates a breach in the veil between this world and the Beyond (which is increasingly thin as we open more to our spiritual nature and begin to live from our soul rather than from the limited survival ego). We open the gates of Heaven and spirit pours into the energy grid of spirit as matter, flowing into and through anyone open enough to receive it, and out into the field of humanity and the Earth of which we are a part. Like water, it flows where it is needed, and in this way we are healed, and the Earth is healed, not necessarily by being transfigured by Light, but more often by bringing out the darkness, wounds and negativity that fester within the body and soul (both individually and collectively). This has to come out for true healing to occur. This is the work that we are all doing, whether consciously or not.
>> and the Failure of the Last Stand of the Dinosaurs, currently filling our screens, is giving the population of the planet a deep and final look at the Old Way of handling things.
And as we are drawn to experience the Rave in celebration and dance, we meet others of like mind from different backgrounds and with different beliefs. We begin to create new networks and learn from each other, honouring the diversity of life whilst knowing the experience of a fundamental Unity, which breaks down barriers and allows a collective vision of a new future.
>> a vagina friendly future :)
A future in which the soul of humanity itself flowers on this most beautiful and sacred planet, and in which we are welcomed into the Community of Being that is at the Heart of the multidimensional Reality of Life.
The future is coming and the challenge for us all is to begin to connect, network, vision and act.

Dear Anushka, Fraser,
I don't know anyone who takes this music seriously anymore.
>> u mean slightly older ravers? like u and moi? and besides, we’re not really talking about the music.
It hasn't really changed for almost a decade - yet so much else has.
>> this is the whole point. the commercial (meaningless but nice just-dance stuff) kept it out of the mainstream, and even when it was finally taken up it was changed to "hard trance" (contradiction in terms) or "progressive trance". anyway it's the hippy lifestyle that goes with it, anti-war, pro-democratic, cooperative and planetary.
It didn't start in Goa. It started in the urban sprawls of Europe and the West coast and the best of it was to be found in the mid to late nineties -
>> agreed. sequenci used to play it in megatripolis in ’94. wrong about the west coast tho. which mostly couldn’t stand it at that time. and wrong about goa which did play a big role innit all.
after 2000 it had definitely started to smell funny
>> i.e. it turned into hard trance to please the ruling djs of the time and the huge majority who wanted to dance like robots.
If it's really hitting the overground (which it did ages ago anyway)
>> it didn't. except changed & commercialised into hard trance. it nearly did at the time of MegaT, and then the Warp, but it never quite took off in the mainstream culture which is, after all, where these very cultural changes are most required.
then surely that's a sign of it's ultimate demise?
>> am talking of a mass movement, complete with politics and lifestyle, that hasn't gone overground yet, and FAILS if it stays ‘underground’ and DOES NOT CAPTURE THE OVERGROUND.
The underground NEVER comes to you. It's never commonplace. You have to go out and find it. It requires the search of the true visionary - not the cultural tourist...
>> forget ‘underground’ it’s brainwashing by the fbi-controlled Music Biz. we hippies only ever went 'underground' because it was too dangerous on the surface. but we went underground in order to collect our strengths prior to coming overground and TAKING OVER!
psytrance music is dead

Hi Fraser,
The DJmag crew love receiving the UP! You've turned us on to all sorts of good websites, concerns and interesting ongoing arguments over the last few years.
We ourselves are about to run a 3 page feature about the history and recent rise in popularity of the Psy Trance sound/scene (in our April 30 issue). Do you or any UPPies have some cool pictures they’d be happy for us to include, particularly of large scale events, outdoor raves and colourful characters and production. All photographers would be fully credited of course (we could even include a web link if applicable).
Let me know if you have any ideas. It would be good for the article to visually reflect the true nature of the scene.
Thanks and keep UP! the good work!

Fraser,
Music is about taking ideas forward not re-hashing them - trance yet again - are you joking?! This will be the fourth time round now for those of us who remember it the first. It was good the first time but awful ever since. Joke music to keep trippers happy - kinda sounds familiar eh, - keep them happy and they will remain quiet. I bet the government love the idea of trance.
So, pretty please, no great biased music stories headlining your otherwise great political debate, as it just ruins it.
And the reason that Organic have doubled sales is probably that they were only selling 50 a week anyway!
Rob Miller, London
>> hmm. i agree it didn't turn on the whole population the first 2 times. indeed it was changed to hard trance to make it commercial more like the then dominant dance pattern. but that was then. now it looks like it might finally take over.
it's about a hippy mass movement. ok, we may be old and missed it so far, but that doesn't mean that rave isn't bigger than it ever was in our day. don’t let em make u an ‘adult’, rob it means someone who’s stopped growing!

Glastonbury Sell Out Precedes Free Festival Clampdown
Glastonbury Festival organisers sold all 112,000 tickets for this year's event in just 17 hours last week, prompting festival chief Michael Eavis to issue his first warning of the year to ticket less fans, urging them to stay away.
"The tickets will have names and addresses so anyone buying unauthorised tickets is being tricked. Without matching identification you won't get in."
Meanwhile cops in the counties surrounding Glastonbury unveiled details of a summer-long joint operation aimed at shutting down outdoor parties, particularly the 'alternative festivals' that in previous years have sprung up outside Glastonbury's perimeter.
"Operation Hartley sends out a clear message that these events will not be allowed," a police spokesman told the BBC, "and anybody who doesn't have a ticket for the Glastonbury Festival should stay away."
Police will have additional powers to break up even tiny parties in the area, following amendments to the notorious Criminal Justice Act this January, which redefines raves as being any outdoor 'repetitive beats' music party with more than 20 guests (including festivities on private land).

'There will be no further issue of tickets. Duplicate orders have been cancelled and returned to the system and have all now been sold. Any further returned tickets and duplicate orders will be absorbed by outstanding needs. Sorry”. Michael Eavis.

it woz the DJ’s fault, it woz dem evil guys
The US Congress is considering legislation that could hold DJs, bands, bartenders, promoters, venue owners (and maybe even you for reading this) liable if a patron uses drugs at a nightclub or concert.
Since it passed the Illicit Drug Anti-Proliferation Act (the RAVE Act) last year which made promoters and venue owners liable, (info on this law at history of the rave act) there’s no reason at all to doubt that the two new bills they’re considering won’t pass, effectively banning live music and dancing while throwing innocent people in jail.

Friends and Family:
It is with sadness that I report that our friend Allen Cohen is in the end stage of his brave fight for life / preparation for death. He wishes to express his eternal gratitude to all who have helped him during the past several months.
Allen received his new liver only last October and had seemed to make the crucial turn towards many years of good health. Unfortunately, the liver cancer that had been in remission prior to his surgery returned. Despite weeks of intensive radiation therapy, the tumour continued to grow and spread, leaving Allen weak and ill beyond description.
We ask that you give a moment of silence to think of all the good things Allen Cohen has done for the universe. As the world around us is engulfed in war, let us celebrate the life of a man of peace, a visionary warrior who has continued to fight the good fight to the very end, and a teacher who has planted seeds of peace for generations to come.
In love and light,
J.C. Juanis

Ready to rumble
- "in support of US national security objectives"
The 4 "civilians" killed and horribly mutilated in Fallujah were Scott Helvenston (Navy veteran), Wesley Batalona (ex-Army Ranger), and Jerry" Zovko and Michael Teague (Army veterans). All 4 were hired through Blackwell Security Consulting which provides "Mobile Security Teams of former operators primarily from the ranks of the US special operations and intelligence communities.” Their “Teams” (like the one in Zimbabwe?) stand ready for deployment around the world “with little notice in support of US national security objectives.” These positions are colloquially and properly known as "mercenaries." Since Blackwell Security Consulting was actually hired to protect Paul Bremer, the U.S. administrator, these 4 “hired guns” were operating directly on the front line "in support of US national security objectives."
Call him Triggerman. He wears street clothes. He stands on the edge of the group, with one ear wired to a headset, scanning the crowd. Triggerman has removed the scope covers from his M-16 forbidden to coalition soldiers until they’re ready to shoot.
Triggerman’s not the kind of guy you’d think Iraqis would welcome happily with flowers and hugs as a harbinger of “freedom and democracy”. No rational person would want to go anywhere near him.
And that’s the idea.
Because this man is more than a soldier. He’s a contract “commando.”
The media are calling him a “contractor,” which suggests the guy you hire to remodel your kitchen or build your dream house. If the great American Pub-Lick assume these “US contractors” were over there to help restore the demolished infrastructure, well, who could blame them?!
But in the bloody, churning streets of Iraq, “contractors” aren’t fixing things. The Washington Post now identifies them as “security contractors,” which still implies they’re plugging in burglar alarms and watching cctv screens.
But their job is to plug the enemy. They’re Triggermen, and much more dangerous than mere soldiers! Oh, and their derivative M-16s just happen to fire a NATO-compatible ammunition round - so they can use ammunition wherever there are Coalition forces.
>> Cosy, eh?
Barbarism unleashed -below the radar, and outside the law
No one’s sure how many coalition-hired Triggerman “mercenaries” are in Iraq, but Bremer has vowed to avenge the deaths of 4 of them, all Americans. His description of them was patriots martyred in “the ongoing struggle between human dignity and barbarism.” Whoops, we’re mixing up our barbarisms here, the Official Plot slipped for a moment there!
Blackwater Security Consulting is run by retired US Navy SEALS who named it after the navy’s code for covert night time scuba diving missions. And this adoption of a covert name suggests how Blackwater employees may envision their missions below the radar, and outside the law.
Blackwater alone (admits it) has 450 operatives in Iraq, mainly ex-Special Forces. They earn as much as $1,000 a day, know the score, choose to confront hideous, hazardous violence for a living, are paid handsomely, and accept occasional deaths as no surprise. To avenge them complicates things when the whole point of hiring professionals is to simplify things.
Under international law mercenaries are illegal combatants and must obey their host state’s laws. They may be entitled to use self-defence if local law permits them. Apparently, however, Triggermen are unaccountable to anyone except by a civil employment contract with the Coalition.
At the recent siege on the coalition’s Najaf headquarters no military personnel were even present - hence no clear accounting for actions of the Triggermen who actually fired thousands of ammunition rounds and hundreds of 40 mm grenades.
Civil War? There’s now a new party Triggermen directly involved in Iraq, directly involved in killing.
We live in times more dangerous than we yet know.

Rumsfeld asked to explain role of private security contractors in Iraq
13 of the most powerful opposition US senators have released a letter to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld asking to explain the role of civilian contractors in Iraq. "The shocking deaths of four American security contractors in Fallujah have revealed the growing role that private security contractors are playing in Iraq," the letter read. It said contractors -- often ex-soldiers -- operate in a fashion similar to special forces, but they are not under US military control and not subject to rules governing the conduct of American forces. "It would be a dangerous precedent if the United States allowed the presence of private armies operating outside the control of governmental authority and beholden only to those who pay them.

A Deserter Speaks
The young man across the table looks sad, but not as stressed as one might expect from a US Army deserter. Camilo Mejia served with a unit that crossed into Iraq just after the invasion and then, for 5 months, fought in the counterinsurgency war in the Sunni Triangle, where he says he was in firefights, killed people, almost got killed, helped torture prisoners and finally had his life saved by a small-scale mutiny. Now he’s a declared conscientious objector who’s spent 5 months absent without leave, facing the wrath of US military justice.
In October, when he was home on furlough, Mejia decided to ditch the killing and chaos of Iraq. Although the military has never officially charged him with desertion, he spent the rest of the autumn and winter living like a fugitive, never using cell phones, credit cards or the Internet for fear of being busted. He was frequently on the move and survived on the good will of friends.
There are dozens of other soldiers who have refused to show up for their deployments, but the military doesn't pursue most of them and usually releases them from service without too much fuss. Most AWOL soldiers don't even get tracked down. However, if a soldier goes public to make a political point, the military response can be severe.

A loss to the cultural inheritance of mankind
The Mandaeans, a still-existing Gnostic sect of ancient origin described as "first cousins to Christians," are being persecuted by Shiite Muslims in Iraq. Few, of course, have noticed. Five Mandaean houses of worship have been closed by Muslims in Iraq in the past few months. Several fatwas by Shiite clergy have been issued against them since the fall of Saddam, stating that they are unclean people. Since they are not technically "People of the Book" - who enjoy a specific (although still inferior) status in Islamic law - they are more vulnerable than even Christians and Jews.
There have also been several horrendous murders by Muslim mobs against Mandaean men, and a number of rapes of Mandaean women. They are particularly vulnerable while celebrating their liturgy, as it includes frequent baptisms by rivers. Hence they are visible - and therefore vulnerable - while performing their baptism rituals, wrapped in white cloths with white hoods.
Also, their cultural patrimony is being destroyed. Here is a recent firsthand account of their plight by Fr. Keith Roderick:
"The Mandæans have a vast literature in Aramaic, written in Mandæic script. The man usually thought to be the most ancient Mandæan scribe, Zazai of Gawazta, is datable to around the year AD 270. Recent research in the colophons of Mandæan manuscripts dates a woman scribe, Slama daughter of Qidra, to approximately AD 200. The Mandæan Holy Book, the GINZA (Treasury), transcribed by Mandæan priests, always in the same format, contains the teachings of John the Baptist.
“The Ginza is separated into a right and left part, Ginza Right and Ginza Left, and the two parts are organised in such a way that on reaching the end of Right Ginza, a reader must turn the volume upside down to read Ginza Left. The two parts face each other in the manner of two inscribed bowls enclosing the text within. Though it does not incorporate the Old Testament, it does include much related to it, including an interesting recension of Psalm 114 which some scholars have argued preserves the original better than does the Massoretic Text . It also includes references to John the Baptist's mother, Elizabeth and her cousin, Mary.
" Most Mandæan manuscripts remain in Mandæan hands in Iraq and Iran. These include many works unknown in the West. We fear that these may now be destroyed by Muslims. Three days ago a heartbroken Mandæan priest was telling me how his beloved library of 20,000 books, including 40 esoteric Mandæan manuscripts with wonderful Mandæan artwork, had been destroyed by Shi'ite Muslims shortly after the fall of the Saddam Hussein regime. The Mandæan Corpus should be seen as part of the cultural inheritance of mankind. Its destruction by ignorant Muslim fanatics would be a loss to all humanity."

> I've said this for years, it is better to work without Socialist Workers and the political lot, they are of the old paradigm....
I second that emotion! The SWP and all those who still think of 'the left' have ignored the fact that the proletariat has disappeared as a political force in the West in the last 20 years.
But, much more importantly, we are utterly opposed in ideals - they want to build workers power, whereas we want to destroy power and abolish work.
>the spirit intention and actual means have to be true to the spirit of love
Amen! There isn't a means and an end - only ongoing means. The means *are* the ends in the making. We cannot make a complete and just world with incomplete and unjust means.

virtually nobody on the “peace” side is talking (or thinking?) about the alternative actions that must be taken to resolve the accelerating ‘terrorism’ question.
this is scandalous (our old-tyme alternative leaders seem habituated to a comfortable life of LOSING political battles and, anyway, should we be applying for demo permits when those same authorities are in slaughter mode?!) / ridiculous (the Love-ites imagine Love means hugs and smiles when whole generations are being undernourished and deformed on every level) / tragic (not only mangled and exploded but demonised & downsized even in their deaths!) / revealing (are large swathes of “the left” simply unreconstructed socialist Xtians with the patriarchal, vagina-unfriendly world-view that comes with that?)
yet signs of the Future are arriving in the wind, here are just 4 of them …
I] U.S. President George W. Bush Found Guilty Of War Crimes
A citizens' tribunal in Tokyo, after a 2 year investigation, has found U.S. President George W. Bush guilty of war crimes for “attacking civilians with indiscriminate weapons and other arms” during the U.S.-led anti-terrorism operations in Afghanistan in 2001.
The tribunal also issued recommendations for banning depleted uranium shells and other weapons that could indiscriminately harm people, compensating the victims in Afghanistan and reforming the United Nations in light of its failure to stop the U.S.-led operation there.
The tribunal participants spent 2 years examining Bush's role as the top commander in the war, making 8 field trips to Afghanistan, and holding nearly 20 public hearings.
"Bush said that military presence in Afghanistan is self-defense," said Robert Akroyd, a British lawyer who served as one of the five judges. "But under international law, a defendant claiming self-defense must pay great care to discriminate between legitimate objects and civilians"

ii] MAJORITY FOR ISRAEL ACCOUNTABILITY ON HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS
In a clear break with U.S. policy and in direct opposition to Congressional attitudes, a majority of Americans now believe that Congress should hold Israel accountable for maintaining programs of weapons of mass destruction and for its human rights violations in the Palestinian Territories.
A poll conducted by Zogby International for the Council for the National Interest shows that 56% agree and 29% disagree that Congress should pass an Israel accountability act on weapons of mass destruction and human rights violations. Nearly 30% strongly agrees. 15% are not sure.
As might be expected, Muslims were strongly in favour of such an act (72%), but so were a surprising percentage of Jews (45%).
Support for an Israel accountability act came primarily from Democrats and independents (61%), 18-29 year-olds (69%), progressives (70%), and liberals (72%), but also a plurality of Republican voters (46
A majority of African Americans agreed with holding Israel accountable.
The Council for the National Interest, which is circulating a petition to send the act to Congress and the President, is a D.C.- based nonprofit organisation founded in 1989 that promotes a balanced policy toward the Middle East. The draft act has received thousands of signatures since it was first circulated on the Internet April 2.

iii] 5 STEPS AMERICANS MUST TAKE, TOMORROW OR IN 100 YEARS??
The Sadr rebellion raises the spectre of defeat. Most likely, U.S. forces can quash the immediate rebellion, but long-term prospects are hopeless. The guerilla war will intensify; the next revolt is guaranteed to be bigger and the one after bigger still. The U.S. can win every battle. It can destroy Iraq as it destroyed Vietnam. But there won't be a pro-U.S. Iraq.
Despite the painful history of U.S.-Iraq relations, the firebrand leader of the rebellion, Moqtada Sadr, demonised by the media as a hateful anti-American fanatic, still believes in the honesty of the American people.
He has publicly appealed to Americans for help, urging the American people “to take sides with the Iraqi people, oppressed by U.S. leaders and the occupation army, to help them so that power is transferred to honest Iraqis."
STEP 1
Force your government to leave Iraq. Obviously, Iraq is a sorry mess, but U.S. withdrawal is the only precondition for improvement.
STEP 2
Apologise to Iraqis for the years of support of Saddam, for the sanctions, and for the war.
STEP 3
Empower a special, international tribunal that would indict and try all those who had a role in shaping those U.S. policies that resulted in massive death and suffering in Iraq. The charges should be the most serious ones, crimes against humanity, mass murder, and international aggression. And the punishment should be appropriate.
STEP 4
Create an international commission to determine sums and rules for paying full and generous reparations to the Iraqi victims of these crimes and to their survivors. Then pay every penny.
STEP 5
Augment the Pledge of Allegiance with an additional sentence: "As a citizen of the United States, I pledge to watch my government with diligence, so that never again, through my negligence, can it commit crimes against humanity."
Will that earn Americans the respect and goodwill of the whole world, including the Muslim world? You bet!
But there’s an important additional benefit -- it is the right and honourable thing to do.
At bottom, this should be a simple concept to grasp: respect and goodwill are not a birthright; they are earned and lost through deeds.

v] We the undersigned activists for peace, religious leaders, intellectuals and academics, writers and journalists, parliamentarians, trade unionists and citizens -- insist on the right of the Iraqis to be free of occupation and free to decide the course of their own history.
We support the call for free elections: free for all Iraqis to participate in, and free from interference of the Occupying Forces.
We support the call of the Jakarta Peace Consensus which was affirmed at the European Social Forum in Paris in 2003 and at the Anti-War Assembly at the World Social Forum in Mumbai in 2004 -- for an urgent and independent Assembly of Iraqis, where all sectors of Iraqi society can freely debate and propose the future shape of their State, completely free of interference from the Occupying Forces. This can be the start of a process of building the New Iraq, and a vital first step towards free elections, democracy and sovereignty.
This Assembly must be held in Iraq. However, if this possibility is denied by the Occupying Forces, a Preparatory Conference must be convened outside Iraq.
We guarantee all our efforts to protect the integrity and openness of such a meeting through our support and presence.
We demand an end to the Occupation and we support the Iraqi peoples right to sovereignty and self-determination.
