Fraser Clark reviews the historic re-issue of the classic ‘Vine of the Soul, Medicine Men, Their Plants And Rituals in the Colombian Amazonia.’

The psychic life of classic Modern Man (which doesn’t include me or you or her to some extent) has been so depleted of its Natural Forces, its arteries so blocked by 1500 years of death propaganda by the repressive christian priestly class, its balls and Individuality downsized to such omni-fit portions by Corporate Marketing, that it is barely recognisable as "Life" at all to anyone who views it from outside its conditioning.

And, unfortunately, it is extremely hard to see from within it. According to the Gnostics, the Jehovah of the Jews (and of the minor authoritarian cult of “Christianity” co-opted by the Romans) who was promulgated to global infamy as the Creator of Mankind, was in fact the Great Pretender, a false god, "the god of the blind." Born of the goddess Sophia (Knowledge) he rebelled against the True Creator and assumed his false throne: "I am that I am, there are no Gods besides me," etc, etc.

Most of mankind fell for the Lie and were enslaved. As The Gospel of Truth puts it: "Ignorance of the Father brought about anguish and terror, and the anguish grew solid like a fog, so that no one was able to see. For this reason the Error became powerful; it worked on its own matter foolishly, not having known the truth. It set about with a creation, preparing with power and beauty the substitute for truth."

I think myself that this marks the rebellion from the ancient Tribal Mind (Group Mind), a stage where children could not know their fathers, but the point is that this substitute for truth has developed massively, reinforced by an amazing technological know-how that’s allowing it to delete the final traces of the Real World (God) and of those who are still living healthily and wholly outside it. And today, this thin skinned, Man-Created veneer of virtue-less reality (standardised concrete / plastic / glass frontages designed to make this small nowhere town where I'm writing SEEM to share in the Dream of Modernity, stimulates only a surface part of the brain, the visual mostly, leaving the other parts totally untouched and empty.

But, far worse than empty, they’re logically-inevitably empty; for, by Western Rationality’s dictates, how could this tiny copycat 'resort' (a minor 'branch' of minor global brandings) be ANYTHING but, well, a pale, derivative reflection, a spineless, near-nonexistent shadow.

And this is not even to consider what actual ‘reality’ the centrally established and maintained Original Model possesses in the first place! Who seriously believes, once you’ve give it some thought, that some cutting edge Los Angeles suburb is so teeming with Raw Real Life that it is worth spreading ruthlessly, addictively and globally?!

The Great Pretender indeed!

It seems to me that Modern Man has sold out his Birthright for the illusion of Security from his anguish and terror, based on the (slightly) reassuring familiarity of the known. But the illusion of Total Security must = Utter Boredom, no? Indeed, is Corporatism’s total commitment to Standardised Sameness any different, in essence, from the universal state religion which Emperor Constantine sought when he chose Christianity as the official uni-fit 'religion' for his disparate polytheistic vassal cultures?! Is not Mammon’s Global Market, rather, the very Culmination of this outlook? Certainly no religion ever managed to install its hypnotic, agenda-reality-setting pulpit in the actual living rooms of its adherents as television does.

And so, as evening settles over Branch 156539, I watch lonely cars cruise slowly its emptying streets HOPING… for SOMETHING… to HAPPEN, for anything to break Mammon's centrally managed monotony. But what could happen within the Western Definition of Reality?! Apart from a chance human-to-human contact (increasingly frowned upon by Central Control because of the 'dangers' of hygiene, disease, violence, theft, the List lengthens every day), the best 'happening' these alienated participants in the globally sanctioned Driving Experience can probably expect, as they monitor their "freely chosen" brand of vehicle around this 156,539th suburban Hollywood look-alike 'branch' (defined now as a bus stop, a road, a police station, a supermarket and an ATM) is that something unexpected will intrude on the evening's TV. Perhaps a (nonexistent) character will have an adventure!

For the tragic truth is that, when Modernity removed Spirit from Reality (chose the “God of the Blind”), our Land was reduced to "resources", our Sacred Groves to so much timber, and all local Places of Power to bar-coded identikit symbols on ‘maps’ which show only the space between things.

It didn't have to be this way. It doesn't now. More and more people like you and me (and increasingly him) are seeing through Mammon and His Errors. But we're such a long way from our Natures. From our Mother Natures.

Perhaps, above all else, that's what's so Reassuring, Satisfying, and Deep Down Dead Fulfilling about Vine of the Soul, Medicine Men, Their Plants And Rituals in the Colombian Amazonia, republished by Synergetic Press in February. Even to look at the book's cover, here in this square white guest unit where I've decided to write my review of it, conjures up, well, another WORLD! The giant Ayahuasca vine hanging the length of the Great Tree suggests Tarzan, Nature Man, with the deepgreen rainforest jungle as backdrop, teeming richly with… dangers and delights! Adventures! Unpredictabilities! Nothing ever standing still! Surprises teeming round every corner.

(When someone breaks his leg in a fall, Modern Man asks what caused it and is satisfied with the reply: he tripped on a rock. Ancient Man, today's intact Amazonian Indian, is far from satisfied by such a superficial, merely visual answer. He wants to know WHY, why did this particular man trip on this particular rock at this particular time? Modern Man dismisses this area as 'Magic,' and contents himself with another Cappuccino.)

Further, as if such a physical difference between two cultures is not enough, here is an entire people who LIVE THEIR ENTIRE LIVES IN DIMENSIONS which we moderns do not even accept as existent, and which our technology certainly can't locate, measure or record (except as electric activity in the nerves). I call it a Psychic/Spirit dimension for want of a better word in the threadbare, increasingly info-swapping jargon to which our language is being reduced.

Could such a ‘deluded,’ out-of-touch culture have been successful? Certainly. Adapted to the Environment? Unquestionably. For at least 25,000 years (and probably half a million) this culture of teeming subcultures endured (now there's an adjective seldom applied to a culture these days!). It lived, it grew, it evolved, it devolved, it reached peaks of (external) civilisation - Mayans, Aztecs etc - but, primarily and unarguably, it endured. Indeed it would be as vibrant and healthy today were it not for Homo Saps, Modern Man with his weapons and diseases of body heart and soul.

We Moderns are actually Babes in terms of longevity, adaptation and evolution, our global 'culture' but a flash in the pan Experiment which many of its most aware inhabitants consider has failed already. And is acceleratingly destroying the planet.

To these millions of souls living their lives in this Amazonian Model, the physical 3-dimensional plane which we Moderns assume as Reality is/was merely… what, a Stage (on which we strut our stuff for a nanosec?), the Intersecting Point of Much Huger Dimensions invisible to mere mortal eyes, the False Throne?

Brave Re-Issue of a Shamanism Classic
Renowned Harvard ethnobotanist Richard Evans Schultes spent 14 uninterrupted years living with the Indian tribes of the Amazon. Combining his scientific eye with a photographer's eye for detail and character he created this extraordinary record of the power plants and places of the Colombian Amazon. Co-authored by Robert Raffauf, an outstanding plant chemist, Vine of the Soul contains some of the most significant photographs on this subject ever taken plus detailed descriptions of the use of plant substances, with information on their bioactive chemistry.

Together they take us on a journey, as the dust jacket puts it, "to a place where healing with plants is the norm, and where ritual and magic play an essential role in everyday life"

Ayahuasca, or Yage, the "Vine of the Soul" itself, is covered in the most detail. In the truest sense, this is, as I can personally attest, a "Medicine" which heals on every level from physical to spiritual. Its central importance to the Indians' Model of Reality is evident in the Tukanoan myth where the river is a man with his feet at the river's mouth, his outspread arms represent the affluents, and his head the source. The man is shaking his flowing hair, out of which fall the leaves of an Ayahuasca vine. They drop into the river, and even while falling they turn into fish.

"Yage is thought to be one continuous vine which stretches back to the beginning of time, an umbilical cord that links human beings to the mythical Past." S. Hugh-Jones (1979). Bit different from the M25, eh? But try this for a rough description of its effects: "Everything appears larger than in real life (macropsia): multitudes of people or animals, often snakes of many colours, and jaguars, dangerous waterfalls or enormous mountains veiled in multicoloured mists or clouds are seen."

Perhaps the single most fascinating thing about Ayahuasca is that it grows in what one author calls "charming double helices." DNA?! An umbilical cord that unites all life?!

The Coca in Amazonia differs from Andean coca, is an integral part of the Amazonian Indian’s lifestyle, and is grown domestically. Origin myths tell of the first settlers arriving in a dugout canoe dragged by an anaconda and carrying a Man, a Woman, and three plants ayahuasca, coca and manioc, the latter being a form of tapioca and a basic food.

Besides Ayahuasca and Coca, some of the other "allies" covered in the book are Virola snuff used for medicine, magic and prophesy (tryptamines), 50 species of nutmeg, Chiricaspi, Bruin Felsia, Bruinfelsia Grandiflora, Bruigmansia (Datura Candide), Bruigmansia Aurea, Methysticodendrum (for seeing the future), Munchiro Borracherro, Scopolamine, Justicia, Iochroma Fuchsioides, Pagamea Macrophylla (Coffee family - resin suddenly appears after thunder), Desfontania, Spinosa (for dreaming), Sabicea Amazonensis, Nicotiana Tabaccum (Tobacco, blown over sick patients, as snuff, as enema etc), Yoco (for stimulating drink, sometimes with Guarana), Guayusa (Holly - exported commercially to Spain in 17^th century as cure-all including syphilis), Souroubea and Marcgraviaceae (sleep inducers), Chicka (fermented drink for 'parties'), Apocynaceae, and Chondrodendron (used in modern medicine),

The reason Bush got elected had precious little to do with anyone voting for Nader. He got elected because he perpetrated the biggest electoral fraud in the whole of history. Do you really think it mattered at all who you voted for? Not to Bush it didn’t. Remember his infamous comment to Gore about Florida. ‘My brother Jeb says Florida is a done deal.’

What the Bush campaign couldn’t control was the inevitable leakage from such blatant electoral scamming. For example, the decision on who became President actually came down to ONE VOTE- not once, but twice! That is the vote of the one judge in Florida and the one judge in the Supreme Court who represented the ‘majority’ which allowed the result of the Florida election shambles to stand.

This leads us to an inevitable and unavoidable moment in history where political business as usual will no longer make any difference. Have you seen Bush’s plans to use uncheckable, unaccountable computer based voting machines for the next election?

Let’s call the Bush administration what it actually is - a military junta who took power in a coup d’etat cunningly disguised as a democratic election. Do you really think it is about to give up on the project on creating the first truly global fascist state half way through the project?

Maybe the powers behind Bush are smart enough to play both sides of a Kerry-Bush head to head. After all Bush’s Skull And Crossbones nickname was ‘Temporary’. But does anyone really think - post Weapons Of Mass Distraction- that Tony’s New Labour is really any better than the Conservatives?

BIN LADEN 'SURROUNDED'
With the US presidential election less than a year away, Osama bin Laden has reportedly been found and surrounded by US special forces in a mountainous area north of the Pakistani city of Quetta which is peopled with bin Laden supporters.

The movements of the terrorist freedom-fighter al-Qaeda leader, "sighted" for the first time since 2001, are being monitored by a National Security Agency satellite. The special forces are "absolutely confident" there is no escape for bin Laden, and are awaiting the order to go in and get him.

He’s estimated to be accompanied by 50 of his fanatical bodyguards. They "sleep in caves or out in the open. The area is swept by fierce snow storms howling down from the 10,000ft-high mountain peaks. Donkeys are the only transport."

The claim is attributed to "a well-placed intelligence source" in Washington, who is quoted as saying: "He (bin Laden) is boxed in."

Since the hostile terrain makes an all-out conventional military assault impossible, the plan is to capture him on a "grab-him-and-go" style operation. "US helicopters already sited on the Afghanistan border will swoop in to extricate him."

"The timing of that order will ultimately depend on President Bush. Capturing him will certainly be a huge help for him as he gets ready for the election.”

On Thursday last week, General Richard Myers, chairman of the US joint chiefs of staff, said America had been engaged in "intense" efforts to capture bin Laden, who was believed to be hiding in the border area between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

But he insisted that the focus of the search had not narrowed for months.

Whether Osama is killed by his own, by his enemies, or captured by the world's only superpower at its imperial zenith (some think nadir), the fire of the 'Clash of Civilizations' he envisaged is already ignited, already burning, and going to be very difficult to extinguish.

The Americans will of course 'rejoice' when he’s gone. But, for reasons now quite complex to explain, Osama bin Laden will be leaving a legacy that will endure for many in our world for a very long time and in ways difficult to even fathom at the moment.

He is more a phenomenon than a man at this point; and in much of the Arab and Muslim world the very name "Osama" has taken on a mystique even greater than that of 'Che' for Latin Americans of an era now past.

What the future now holds in a Middle East occupied by American troops, precariously controlled by the CIA, manipulated by the Israelis and their powerful Jewish and Christian supporters, and seething as never before with resentments, fears and hatreds, is difficult to predict in any detail. MON FEB 22      LSD PIONEER HUMPHRY OSMOND DIES, AGED 86
Humphry Osmond, the psychiatrist who coined the word "psychedelic" for the drugs to which he introduced the writer and essayist Aldous Huxley, died on Feb. 6 at his home in Appleton, Wisconsin. He was 86.

The cause was cardiac arrhythmia, said his daughter Euphemia Blackburn of Appleton, where Dr. Osmond moved 4 years ago.

Dr. Osmond entered the history of the counterculture by supplying hallucinogenic drugs to Huxley, who ascribed mystical significance to them in his playfully thoughtful, widely read book "The Doors of Perception," from which the rock group the Doors took its name.

But in his own view and in that of some other scientists, Dr. Osmond was most important for inspiring researchers who saw drugs like L.S.D. and mescaline as potential treatments for psychological ailments. By the mid-1960's, medical journals had published more than 1,000 papers on the subject, and Dr. Osmond's work using L.S.D. to treat alcoholics drew particular interest.

"Osmond was a pioneer," Dr. Charles Grob, a professor of psychiatry at the University of California School of Medicine, said in an interview. "He published some fascinating data."

In one study, in the late 1950's, when Dr. Osmond gave L.S.D. to alcoholics in Alcoholics Anonymous who’d failed to quit drinking, about half had not had a drink after a year.

Huxley's reading about Dr. Osmond's research into similarities between schizophrenia and mescaline intoxication led him to volunteer to try the drug. Dr. Osmond agreed, but later wrote that he "did not relish the possibility, however remote, of being the man who drove Aldous Huxley mad." In 1953, a day Dr. Osmond described 12 years later as "a delicious May morning," he dropped a pinch of silvery white mescaline crystals in a glass of water and handed it to Huxley, the author of "Brave New World," which described a totalitarian society in which people are controlled by drugs.

"Within two and a half hours I could see that it was acting, and after three I could see that all would go well," Dr. Osmond wrote. He said he felt "much relieved."

Dr. Osmond first offered his new term, psychedelic, at a meeting of the New York Academy of Sciences in 1957. He said the word meant "mind manifesting" and called it "clear, euphonious and uncontaminated by other associations." Huxley had sent Dr. Osmond a rhyme with his own word choice: "To make this trivial world sublime, take half a gram of phanerothyme." (Thymos means soul in Greek.) Rejecting that, Dr. Osmond replied: "To fathom Hell or soar angelic, just take a pinch of psychedelic."

In addition to his daughter Euphemia, Dr. Osmond is survived by his wife, Jane; a second daughter, Helen Swanson of Surrey, England; a son, Julian, of New Orleans; a sister, Dorothy Gale of Devon, England; and five grandchildren.

Humphry Fortescue Osmond, born on July 1, 1917, in Surrey, intended to be a banker, but attended Guy's Hospital Medical School of the University of London. In World War II, he was a surgeon-lieutenant in the Navy, where he trained to become a ship's psychiatrist.

At St. George's Hospital in London, he and a colleague, John R. Smythies, developed the hypothesis that schizophrenia was a form of self-intoxication caused by the body's mistakenly producing its own L.S.D.-like compounds.

When their theory was not embraced by the British mental health establishment, the two doctors moved to Canada to continue their research at Saskatchewan Hospital in Weyburn where they developed the idea that no one should treat schizophrenics who had not personally experienced schizophrenia. "This it is possible to do quite easily by taking mescaline," they wrote. The research directly inspired Huxley and other scientists.

Perhaps the most famous psychedelic researcher was Dr. Oscar Janiger, a Beverly Hills psychiatrist, who gave L.S.D. to Cary Grant, Jack Nicholson and, again, Huxley.

Today's understanding of serotonin, a neurotransmitter important in causing and alleviating depression, grew out of research into the effect of L.S.D. on the brain. L.S.D. and serotonin are chemically similar.

Dr. Osmond's most important work involved alcoholism research, done with Abram Hoffer, a colleague at Weyburn. Originally, they thought L.S.D. would terrify alcoholics by causing symptoms akin to delirium tremens. Instead, they found it opened them to radical personal transformation.

In "Psychedelic Drugs Reconsidered" 1979 they suggested that "one conception of psychedelic theory for alcoholics is that L.S.D. can truly accomplish the transcendence that is repeatedly and unsuccessfully sought in drunkenness". Bill Wilson, a co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, met Dr. Osmond and took L.S.D. himself, strongly agreeing that it could help many alcoholics.

As psychedelic research became increasingly difficult, Dr. Osmond left Canada to become director of the Bureau of Research in Neurology and Psychiatry at the New Jersey Psychiatric Institute in Princeton, and then a professor of psychology at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. He mainly studied schizophrenia but was disappointed he could not pursue his research into hallucinogens, Mrs. Blackburn, his daughter, said. "I'm sure he was very saddened by it. It could have helped millions of people."

BLIX and BUTLER "BUGGED"

The British or US intelligence services monitored former UN chief weapons inspector Hans Blix's mobile phone whenever he was in Iraq. Richard Butler, a key Australian official at the heart of attempts to locate Iraq's weapons of mass destruction, has also revealed that he was bugged while carrying out delicate international negotiations with the Iraqis.

The revelations follow Clare Short’s revelations that the British intelligence service had spied on UN secretary-general Kofi Annan as the US and Britain tried to win UN support for invading Iraq.

Andrew Fowler from the ABC's Investigative Unit says sources have told him that Australia's Office of National Assessments has read transcripts of Dr Blix's phone conversations in Iraq. "That's what I'm told, specifically each time he entered Iraq his phone was targeted and recorded and the transcripts were then made available to the United States, Australia, Canada, the UK and also New Zealand," he said.

Richard Butler says he welcomes Ms Short's comments because it is time the world knew how international diplomacy really works. He served as Australia's UN ambassador from 1992 until 1997, before becoming chief weapons inspector, a job he held until 1999. He is now Governor of Tasmania.

"I was well aware [of being bugged]," he told ABC Radio's The World Today. "Those who did it would come to me and show me the recordings they'd made on others to try to help me do my job in disarming Iraq. They would say 'we're just here to help you' and they'd never show me any recordings that they'd made of me.
"I knew it from other sources. I was utterly confident I was bugged by at least four permanent Security Council members. I don't know what the Chinese were doing. I was utterly confident that in my attempts to have private diplomatic conversations to solve the problem of the disarmament of Iraq I was being listened to by the Americans, the British, the French and the Russians.
"They also had people on my staff who were reporting what I was trying to do privately."

ILLEGAL
Mr Butler says that if Mr Annan was bugged, it would be illegal. "There is a headquarters agreement with the United Nations that says that those places, those premises, those persons will be inviolable. It's not true to say that this activity if it occurred was within the law."

DAMAGING
He says he believes the activity could be "very damaging".

"What if Kofi Annan had been bringing people together last February in a genuine attempt to prevent the invasion of Iraq ... and one of these people bugging him didn't want that to happen, what do you think they would do with that information?"

Mr Butler says he had tactics to get around being bugged when he was with the UN. "I'd take a walk in the park - it's just ludicrous but true," he said.

"If I really truly wanted to have a sensitive conversation with somebody where I was asking them to be honest with me ... I was reduced to having to go either to a noisy cafeteria in the basement of the UN where there was so much noise around, and then whisper in the hope that we wouldn't be overheard.
"Or I'd literally take a walk in Central Park. I'd take a walk with a person in a park and speak in a low voice and keep moving so that we could avoid directional microphones and maybe, maybe just have a private conversation."

NATURAL GAS UPDATES A DARK AND COLD FUTURE

On January 16th CNN posted a news story regarding the demands posed by an arctic weather front which contained the quote, “The weather has created high demand for electricity, and as a result some power generating plants ran out of natural gas Thursday and increased the burden on other plants.”
As this story began to circulate it was quickly realised that panic might follow a confirmed announcement of gas shortages. The following day, Connecticut’s New Haven Register published a banner story headlined NATURAL GAS ALARM SPURS PROBE which opened with the lead:
There is no natural gas shortage. But in an investigation also launched Friday, State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal alleged that profiteering power-generation companies nearly forced blackouts in New England Thursday. Blumenthal said that electrical-generation companies sold fuel needed by their power plants on the spot markets to capitalise on soaring prices for natural gas.

Blaming the power companies for these events is a weak attempt to disguise an ever-more-apparent catastrophe looming in the near future. Experts familiar with natural gas production figures understand that this is just the beginning of what is to come. Australia’s THE AGE reported on January 14th that, “Australia is confident it can win liquefied natural gas contracts with the United States worth up to $50 billion, amid warnings that America is facing a looming energy crisis.”
In describing the new LNG contracts The AGE went on to report: “American liquefied natural gas imports are expected to increase ten-fold over the next six years and total US energy consumption is expected to surge by about 32 per cent over the next two decades.”
The Bush Administration has admitted that America's capacity to meet its voracious hunger for energy through domestic production is limited.
[Energy Minister] Macfarlane warned that the US could face an energy crisis that would rival the 1973 and 1980 oil price shocks. Both events triggered a combination of soaring inflation and economic stagnation in the major economies of the world. “The US has only very recently become open about their energy requirements, and some say it's as big a crisis, or potential crisis, as during the oil shocks,” he said.

The difference is that in past oil shocks there were other places to go to obtain immediate supplies. Given the fact that LNG imports require huge, costly and dangerous terminals which don’t exist, and a tanker fleet which has not been built, the comparison falls short. With the crisis now firmly on the table it is time for a close and honest look at the real natural gas production numbers and to understand that significant LNG imports are perhaps a decade and billions of dollars of investment away. They will certainly not be enough - or in time - to prevent what is becoming a stark reality.

· They’re cutting the estimated proven reserve base of America’s largest natural gas pipeline company by 41% after warning earlier that negative numbers would be reflected in filings with securities regulators.

·       El Paso will record a one-time, non-cash charge against its fourth-quarter earnings of about $1 billion on a pre-tax basis as a result of the change.
·       That charge, under federal securities rules, must be taken to reflect a drop in the value of the proven reserve base on El Paso’s books.
·       Such reserves are a key number used in the industry for predicting the potential of oil and gas production.
·       The revision, released Tuesday after the close of the stock market, exceeded what some analysts had been expecting.
·       The Houston-based company reduced its reserve base as of the end of last year from 4.46 trillion cubic feet of natural gas equivalents to 2.64 trillion cubic feet of gas equivalents.

It was bad enough that the Israeli Deputy Minister of Defence speculated that Muslims and, more specifically, Palestinians might have some “genetic defect” that leads them to acts of terrorism. But it was then followed by a Likud Member of the Knesset stating that it was a fact, and that one cannot "trust an Arab even after 40 years in the grave.”

The racism in these statements is astonishing. In many other countries, massive outcries would be the response, and those who made such statements could consider their political careers over.

We can wait and see if such is the response in Israel. Gush Shalom, a major Israeli peace group, stated, “If this had been said about the Jews in any parliament in Europe or America, the member would have been forced to resign within hours. Even if he had ‘apologised’. Only in Israel does such racist talk pass almost without reaction.”

It can only be called appalling that Jews in positions of leadership of a major Jewish community can make such statements. This is not a question of holding Jews to a “higher standard”; we know, better than most, what these kinds of ideas can lead to. Or at least we should. Our history is full of lessons about what happens when those who are different are cast as inferior or inherently dangerous. And it is not so long ago that we ourselves were cast as a “different” race that had to be eradicated on the basis of presumed “racial or genetic” differences.

If this is the kind of leadership in control of the Knesset and the IDF, it’s no wonder the situation in the Middle East goes from bad to worse. It is high time that Jews, Arabs and others adopted a zero tolerance policy for people who blame “Arab blood”, “Jewish blood” or either culture for this conflict. We Jews, better than anyone, know where that leads.

The killing of an unarmed 15-year-old Palestinian youth is rare in one way - he was shot in the back as he waved goodbye to a UN delegation of visiting aidworkers, which is the only reason an Israeli army officer has been suspended, an apology made to the family, and the partially paralysed youth moved to better facilities at a Tel Aviv Hospital.
Otherwise, shooting of Palestinians is routine and commonplace, medical care often prevented, and in most instances, no investigations carried out. This undoubtedly accounts for the high fatality list of Palestinian children who are like game for Israeli soldiers, and rarely reported by the media.

BUSH IMAGES MANIPULATE MINDS OF VOTERS

Have you noticed the halos and orbs around the head of President George W. Bush in recent press pictures?
        You probably haven't because things like that are designed to be seen by the subconscious mind. And genius Karl Rove, the guy whose job is to make the pres look good all the time, knows just what buttons to push to keep his man in the White House.        Since the day he announced his candidacy for office, the public relations campaign around Mr. Bush has done a brilliant job of portraying him as something almost superhuman. Since 9-11 and the launching of the Bush War on Terrorism, he has ruled his country under a strange cloak of secrecy and gotten away with it.
        Protesters who appear on the street everywhere Bush goes, are assigned areas for demonstration that are out of the sight and camera range of the media. Thus you never see protest signs around President Bush.
        With ongoing wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, with foreign and American casualties daily, we are not shown battle casualties, wounded soldiers, or military funerals, unless a local TV news crew does it. Body bags are starting to come home in nearly every part of the country.
        And there are those carefully programmed stunts to create photo opts for Mr. Bush. You remember them because they’re always quite spectacular. His Ground Zero Appearance while the smoke of the attack was swirling around his head, the Aircraft Carrier Landing to proclaim Victory (when the conflict was only just beginning), the Thanksgiving Day Visit to troops in Baghdad, the Fall of Saddam’s Statue (total faked) and now the Kennedy style Man on Mars Announcement.
        Everything Mr. Bush is observed doing is carefully staged. Everything he says is carefully programmed. It is all designed to portray him as a great leader of a nation under duress.
        One of the more sickening tricks, and most obvious, are the pictures emanating from the president's public relations office. If you look closely, you realise they are not accidental. They are staged and Mr. Bush is posing for them.
        The picture of Bush posing before a lighted cross, under a crown and the word LORD is probably the most pretentious of all.

APOLOGISE FOR 'IMMORAL' WAR SAYS TUTU
Nobel peace prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu has challenged Tony Blair and George Bush to apologise for their pursuit of a counter-productive and "immoral" war in Iraq.

In a scathing analysis of the background to the invasion, he ridiculed the "dangerously flawed" intelligence Britain and the US used to justify a military action which has made the world “a great deal less safe". The turmoil after the war proved it is an illusion to believe that "force and brutality" lead to greater security.

The intervention of the emeritus Archbishop of Cape Town follows a series of deadly terrorist attacks in the country over the past week, including an armed raid on a police station in which 22 people died.

"How wonderful if politicians could bring themselves to admit they are only fallible human creatures and not God, and can thus make mistakes. But they seem to think that such an admission is a sign of weakness. Weak and insecure people hardly ever say 'sorry'.
"It is large-hearted and courageous people who are not diminished by saying: 'I made a mistake'. President Bush and Prime Minister Blair would recover considerable credibility and respect if they were able to say: 'Yes, we made a mistake'."

He linked Mr Bush's support for capital punishment, when Governor of Texas, with a new philosophy behind the invasion of Iraq. "It may not be fanciful to see a connection between this and the belligerent militarist policies that have produced a novel and dangerous principle, that of pre-emption on the basis of intelligence reports that in one particular instance have been shown can be dangerously flawed and yet were the basis for the United States going to war, dragging a Britain that declared that intelligence reports showed Iraq to have the capacity to launch its weapons of mass destruction in a matter of minutes.
"An immoral war was thus waged and the world is a great deal less safe place than before. There are many more who resent the powerful who can throw their weight about so callously and with so much impunity."

The archbishop, who was awarded the Nobel prize in 1984, suggested that the two leaders have operated a policy of "might is right - and to hell with the rule of international law".

Drawing on his experience in South Africa after the downfall of apartheid, he argued that "retributive justice" ignores victims' needs and can be "cold and impersonal". Instead he championed the concept of "restorative justice" - in which offenders and victims are brought together - and pointed to South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which he headed, as an illustration of the idea being put into practice.[The Independent]

PENTAGON OPENS CRIMINAL PROBE OF HALLIBURTON
The Pentagon has opened a criminal fraud investigation of a unit of Dick Cheney's old company Halliburton Co. involving potential overpricing of fuel delivered to Iraq.
     The investigation was focused on Halliburton subsidiary Kellogg Brown and Root, a Pentagon spokeswoman said.
     "The Defense Criminal Investigative Service, the criminal investigative arm of the Inspector General's office, is investigating allegations on the part of KBR of fraud, including the potential overpricing of fuel delivered to Baghdad by a KBR subcontractor," a Pentagon spokeswoman said.
     Halliburton, an oil services company based in Houston, is the biggest contractor for the U.S. military in Iraq. It has more than $8 billion in deals covering everything from doing laundry, building bases and providing meals to helping rebuild the oil industry.
     The contracts have drawn intense scrutiny from Democrats because of the firm's ties with Cheney, who ran the company from 1995 to 2000.
     There was no immediate comment from Halliburton or the White House.
