‘LORD’ HUTTON WAS IN NO WAY AN OBJECTIVE PERSON
Hutton, let us not forget, is so committed to the due process of justice that he was more than willing to serve as a "Diplock" judge i.e. acting as judge & jury in the 1970s in Northern Ireland, and listed as a so-called "legitimate target" by the Provisional IRA.
Hutton was born into Ulster's protestant ruling class, was educated at an
all-boys boarding school, and has defended his class interest consistently through his life.
His early career in
Ulster saw him acting as QC for the MOD during an inquiry into the ‘Bloody Sunday’ massacre.  He cleared the MOD and Army of any wrong doing.   Following this he developed a close, friendly relationship with the MOD.
Many rumours that he’s a leading
Freemason have not yet been corroborated, though other ‘Huttons’ have often figured in the histories of the lodges.  Certainly concern has been shown over the years about the number of Judges who are Masons, particularly those in Ulster where Masonry is rife.  Hutton’s successor as Lord Chief Justice NI was investigated as a possible Freemason and member of the related semi-masonic Orange Order
Hutton also acted for the UK government in Strasbourg when the European Court was investigating the state's mistreatment of detainees
in Northern Ireland.
Later in his capacity as an English Law Lord he once again demonstrated his affiliations with the MOD, or at least their chums in MI5, by presiding over the Shaylor Inquiry, where the whistleblower’s revelations about MI5’s incompetence and criminality were condemned.
The
MOD itself has also been associated with a high degree of Masonic involvement.

In short, when Blair appointed
Hutton, he knew he was a friend of the MOD.  With the apparent ‘dodgy material’ in the Dossier coming from the JIC who respected at face value what they were told by SIS / MI6 and their ‘reliable sources,’ the finger of suspicion must now fall on Whitehall and their friends.

There is now even speculation that Kelly’s death was more than suicide, with
MOD, Police and even Masonic complicity seen here too:

UP! ”It is ironic that in the same week that suicide among the prison population in England causes banner headlines and a call that something must be done, we see the knives out for somebody having the temerity to say what is in their heart concerning other people driven to suicide.  The Palestinian youth have been betrayed by everyone from the UN to their own politicians and those who would exploit their anguish.” P Chesters / Wallasey, Wirral

THE SUICIDE BOMBER
"This particular brand of terrorism, the suicide bomber, is truly born out of desperation.  Many many people criticise, many many people say it is just another form of terrorism, but I can understand and I am a fairly emotional person and I am a mother and a grandmother.  I think if I had to live in that situation, and I say this advisedly, I might just consider becoming one myself. And that’s a terrible thing to say."  Dr. Jenny Tong, MP.

Killing people is wrong.  Full stop.  But it is clearly also sometimes possible to understand why people do it.  On occasion, though without ever condoning the killing, it is even possible to sympathise with what drove them to it.
As a poll over Christmas by the Today programme showed, a large number of people in this country think they understand why the Norfolk farmer Tony Martin killed the burglar who broke into his house.  Many of them - including several MPs - even think he was right to do it.  We disagree with them.  But that does not mean that Mr. Martin's supporters are, or that any MP who speaks up for Mr. Martin should be treated like a parliamentary leper.

Jenny Tonge: Cultural Suicide Bomber
jenny tonge did not say what she said, casually(“I say this advisedly”).
she did not say it
maliciously - you could see the suffering in her face.
she even said it like she’d rather be saying something else, anything else, but simply couldn’t.
jenny tonge said what she said, knowing she was
putting her head on some line.  and she was right, she was fired from her job as the Liberal Democrat Party’s shadow Minister for Children!  and she may have sacrificed her career entirely  unless enough people speak up bravely on her side.

no use asking what she was afraid of!  she was afraid that if she said what she said she might be fired, but, despite this, something in her drove her so that she could no longer
resist saying what she felt!  to imagine, for even a second, that what drove her was a deep anti-semitism is, besides 100% stupid & paranoid, insulting!

you could say that at that moment (surrounded by young palestinian children) she, herself, was forced by her convictions, to become a cultural suicide bomber.  she felt deep in her heart that she had no choice but to explode a cultural bomb that would likely end her own cultural career simultaneously.

all of which suggests the sorry state our democracy has somehow been reduced to.

preamble
you could, and some of you will, assign all sorts of motives to why I am doing what I am about to do, but I tell you now, and very simply, that I have only one motive:  honesty, personal integrity, and Love of (and trust in) Truth.

nor is this some kind of easy or shallow throwaway line; neither is it based on some kind of ulterior motive (as certain people will undoubtedly claim).  indeed, if I thought there was even a 1% chance that I was doing this for a subconsciously ulterior motive,
I WOULD NOT DO IT.  and indeed it is PRECISELY because I KNOW that I have no ulterior motive that I am doing this, that I MUST do this.

in honest
fact, far from feeling unclean, guilty or ashamed about it, it feels like a very courageous and air-clearing move.  it IS a courageous move (as jenny tong or, before her, cherie blair, would agree, albeit secretly), and the decision finally came to me very clearly when some friends were advising me of the dangers of doing it.  I suddenly thought:  if there is so much fear to discuss these things, then it is my DUTY to speak UP!  SUCH FEAR OF OPEN DISCUSSION SURELY CANNOT BE ALLOWED!

if the UP! and I have ANY real purpose it is to INSIST on discussing ideas and sharing information on whatever we think is important.  living in a fledgling near-democracy such as ours (I use the term advisedly :) I consider it my SACRED DUTY to continuously probe & point up its weakest points, its failings, and to ruthlessly hold ‘my’ democracy to the highest possible account.  this is the duty of anyone lucky enough to live in a democracy!  and really only by doing this can I maximise my chances of helping the rest of the world.  (by helping I mostly mean ‘not screwing over.’)

IF I’D BEEN BORN IN PALESTINE INSTEAD OF SCOTLAND IN 1943 HOW WOULD MY LIFE HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT?
if I’d been lucky enough not to have ended up in a refugee camp in a faraway country (like several of my cousins) and if I’d managed to follow a similar course as in scotland (odds against) I would have just graduated with an honours degree in psychology from, say, jerusalem university, when the 1967 exploded around me.
I would have lost more of my near or distant relatives in that war, so I would have aged and wisened up much faster than in my easy middleclass life in
scotland.  indeed, about the time I was becoming a hippy and traveling around Europe and the world to study Peace and Love, what would I have been doing in palestine
well, as I saw in my travels, young men in such societies need to get a job.  the odds would have been massively against me, I suppose, but let’s assume I became a
clinical psychologist in one of some city’s 2 main hospitals.

and what would I have been dealing with there for the next 20 years while I was writing my novels and poems, and working for a peaceful renaissance of western culture?

for week after week, and increasingly throughout my 30s and 40s, I would have been dealing with the
horror, the pain, the fear, the paranoia, the loss, the insults, the embarrassment, the rage, the disgust and the utter uttermost DESPAIR of my people.  being by nature an idealist rather than a practical egotist, a disenchantment with the world would have seeped into my being so deep that depression wouldn’t begin to express it.  and, against which, anti-depressants (assuming we had them) would have been like sticking plasters on an open wound, or like drugging an animal as it was led to slaughter.

and slowly my rage and my despair and my fury at the injustice would have deepened and widened.  I would have, by now, listened to the lying words of one israeli and american leader after another ‘promising’ ‘promising’ but ultimately asking demanding THE ONLY THING MY PEOPLE AND I HAD LEFT, THE ONLY THING WE COULD NEVER GIVE UP!
OUR RIGHT TO RESIST!  TO FIGHT BACK!

and NOW, after my entire adult life lived on shattered promises, with everything in our situation getting relentlessly worse, with the whole world ignoring our plight (despite empty words) and with, let’s face it, only ONE force which refused to take it lying down, which seemed to be on our side  the William Wallaces and Robert the Bruces who fought back against the hated English invaders, the bravery, the resolution of the resisters!  all my life I would have been hearing of (even meeting) these brave men who risked their very lives in their refusal to swallow our shame, who stood up like men against an increasingly arrogant, vicious, ever-advancing and terrible task master leviathan.

so, by now, every attempt has failed,  several close relatives have been killed, wounded, crippled or destroyed by grief and loss, and as I look back on
my entire adult life I see that the rational and peaceful bearing I’ve managed to maintain until now has NOTHING to show for it, except losses, and, in my eyes, a nation of israelis speaking peace and shooting through the other sides of their mouths.  AND NOT THE SLIGHTEST OF SLIGHTEST SIGNS THAT ANYTHING IS EVER GOING TO CHANGE.  CERTAINLY NOT PEACEFULLY!!!!  NOT IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!  I SHALL DIE AN OUTCAST!  I SHALL DIE WITHOUT SEEING JUSTICE!

and now I hear that, in the west,
THE PEOPLE WHO CARE ABOUT ALL THIS SUFFERING AND INJUSTICE CAN’T EVEN DISCUSS THESE ISSUES OPENLY!

at some point in all this, my own self-respect would have raised itself  probably from day one.  but at some point I would have decided to help the resistance in some way.  perhaps I go to meetings where such things are discussed.  my religious leaders (in whom I never had much interest) are at least helping with the resistance, spreading hope and possibility, and promising that God will eventually heed our prayers and all the rest of it.

if I lived in that situation, I probably would have become a suicide freedom-fighter myself.
and, if I didn’t, I’d certainly have the utmost respect for my nation’s warriors who did.

RUMOURS OF A DEEPER STORY…
Oil and gas are the suspension system of the earth. They function as a shock absorber and mitigate earth quakes etc. In areas where a lot of gas/oil is taken out, earthquakes start to occur more frequently .
Bush etc. are aware of this and that's one reason to go hunt for oil elsewhere, not on US mainland.

But there is a more compelling reason: an earth axis shift is about to happen (around the 2012 time-frame) because of global warming, ice-cap shifting etc. all predicted and warned for by Einstein, and prophets old and new in many cultures. When this happens, and the estimate is a 15 degree shift, there will be serious disasters, but especially then the lack of suspension/dampening will prove to be rather damaging for some regions.

Now all this is known, to a limited group including some governments, and is one of the reasons Europe is going east. There is no other rationale for it, what happened to former East Germany proves that all talking about workforce, graying, new markets etc. is bullshit. The main reason is to provide a way out for the population of the lowlands, when this shift happens (and there will be a tsunami and serious earth quakes etc. too of course.)

So that's why the people will have no say in this matter, europe has to move forward for good reasons.

“THIS BOOK WILL RAISE SCREAMS”
Against the Grain
Anyone who can read this book and still accept the NPR-advertised Archer Daniels Midland’s notion of non-sustainable monoculture "feeding the world" is sleepwalking off a cliff.
Industrial agriculture is not farming: It's a political scam that gives industrialists money to bankrupt real farmers, force unhealthy food-commodities upon the world, and ruin cultures and ecosystems in the process.
This book will raise screams from what will pretend to be the "
farmer community," but they’ll actually be from corporate welfare recipients, not real gardeners and farmers.

Have been reading vaguely about free energy for a while, but remain unconvinced.
if i had a free energy device, the FIRST THING i would do is get it the public domain INSTANTLY.  (leading to a shitty side question about what if someone else patents it and sues you, but whatever)
bcos it would change our world, etc.

why can't these guys in the
UP! go commercial NOW?  if it’s zero point and overunity, they could just start small, and keep going.  Fix up your friend’s house for a fraction of his current costs, use the money to expand?
if it’s 'free' energy, i can't see how they could lose.
if its free energy, i don't see how there aren't millionaires already, if they are market-oriented, which they seem to be...

so while am hopeful, will believe when see.
until then i have marginally more belief in them than the average economist, pardon my skepticism.
(am zetetic at heart, skeptic on surface)

met guy who described friend who developed similar techs, like cars running on water, 5 or more years ago, with dire stories about how the inventor died/was wacked.
however, would be horribly ironic if this 'zero-point' energy or whatever was unraveling space time and/or draining the life of some etheric superentity god/killing another universe...

ASTROFUEL
I'm a little surprised nobody's mentioned Helium-3 yet.  "Astrofuel," as it's known by sci-fi enthusiasts, is clean-burning (few neutrons) fusion fuel for next-generation nuke reactors and I'm pretty sure it was mentioned in the UP! a while back.

There's not much on earth but plenty on the moon, and it dwarfs any other source apart from, obviously, the Sun.  So Bush's new space programme should come as no surprise.

Here's the first mention of it I've seen in the mainstream media - from
NY Times 22/1/04:

"
HEADING FOR THE STARS, WONDERING IF CHINA MIGHT REACH THEM FIRST"
“Mr. Luan and other Chinese officials say China's lunar ambitions are wholly peaceful.  Mr. Luan suggested that one of China's primary motivations for reaching the Moon was possible economic exploitation.  He told People's Daily, the Communist Party's official newspaper, that China was also interested in developing lunar energy resources, like helium-3, a rare form of the element that scientists say could power advanced reactors on Earth...”

Spirit matters, politics & mysticism
Surely Nature Worship is a simple and profound way to peace, a grounding, literally, within the heart and mind.  Earth, after all, is the ultimate Rock!
& if this is so, it’s extremely relevant.

Surely of paramount concern to any serious and spiritually grounded
new politics is western civ's addiction to  consumerism.  in buddhist terminology, this is the root cause of all suffering  desire, or wanting more, more, more .. feeding me me me, instead of tasting/loving Life Life Life

consumerism = the opposite of any meaningful nature worship

To consume is to extinguish, to take, to use for ourself, our self.  is this very idea not the opposite of the earth-friendly state of which we all dream?

Nature Worship, properly understood, is a way forward for our civilisation.  Nature (the way things are) unifies us (we are now a fragmented, alienated society) while still maintaining/encouraging our most loving/happiest individuality.  It recognises that we live and breathe together in One Shared Life, in the Living God(dess) of the Here&Now, in Gaia.  It means a profound and FELT coming to terms with the way things are, with Nature (or, dharma), and a resulting cessation of restless wanting.  It means access to stillness and a less alienating and more spacious & creative individualism.  Politically it means the encouragement of a fresh future human identity, one closer to an art ("let the beauty that we love be what we do") and further from (as is currently the case) a merely market, or consumer (in effect usurious) identity. boo, hiss

[political brainstorm on these ideas:

a civilisational, institutional move based on these kinds of spirit matters ideas (i.e. dharma in schools and (even better) the seeding of state supported family based monastic communities in rural england/EU as a way of solving housing problems/ planting new education, health, renewable energy, arts&crafts economies, (and so weaning us off the old ways),  and not to mention beginning to cut the 3 billion p/a worth of agricultural subsidies (and spend the money on something better) would over time bring more peace and less consumerism.]

&, also, perhaps, to politically acknowledge that life is mystical would be no bad thing.  surely it is merely to state the blindingly obvious, namely that
we don't, as a society, know why or how we got here, or what will happen next, or what this stuff of creation IS.  likewise we don't understand the essence of time, space, or consciousness, and we probably never will. Only thing that’s certain, I'm afraid, is death.  But there’s an eternal quality to life.. that's the gospel - the Taste of God

anyway, all in all it seems like a bit of a blip, to me,
this secular age

anyway, thanks for listening.

Shower Away The Mistakes Of The Sixties Daze

The truth is, Janice Joplin arrived alone and broke in San Francisco’s North Beach Beat Bohemia 2 years earlier than History has so far recorded, in 1961 not 1963.
She became known to the artists of Grant Ave as “
The chick in the ally” because that’s where she found shelter until, one night, at an art exhibition my friends and I were throwing at the Coffee Gallery, we heard these incredible sounds wafting from the bar which we’d assumed was a new Bessie Smith recording on the juke box. However, when we entered the main room, there on the small stage with no mike or jazz backup was “The chick in the alley”  All of us, everyone in that room, was astounded.

Here was talent from some kind of heaven.  To say we were moved would be a vast understatement.  We were inspired.  From that night on, Janice found all the shelter, food and help she needed.  All of us invited her to our studios.  There she was safe.

Many of us did paintings of her.  Mine hangs today at the
Sorlandats Museum in Kristiansand, Norway.  Her immortality lives in the painter’s art as well as music history.

Eventually she went back to Port Arthur, Texas, until her return with
Chet Helms in 1963.

Cheney's Grim Vision: DECADES OF WAR
VP SAYS BUSH POLICY AIMED AT LONG-TERM WORLD THREAT
by James Sterngold / San Francisco Chronicle
In a forceful preview of the Bush administration's expansionist military policies in this election year, Dick Cheney Wednesday painted a grim picture of what he said was the growing threat of a catastrophic terrorist attack in the United States and warned that the battle, like the Cold War, could last generations.
The vice president's tone, in a major address to the Los Angeles World Affairs Council, was sobering, unlike many other comments recently by senior administration officials that have stressed successes in the war on terrorism.
Cheney devoted the half-hour speech to a frightening characterisation of the war on terrorism and the new kind of mobilisation he said it demanded.  He sounded the alarm about the increasing prospects of a major new terrorist attack and the extraordinary responses that are required.  While many of his remarks echoed past comments, Cheney struck a surprisingly dour note and suggested only an administration of proven ability could manage the dramatic overhaul necessary for the nation's security apparatus.
"One of the legacies of this administration will be some of the most sweeping changes in our military, and our national security strategy as it relates to the military and force structure, and how we're based, and how we used it in the last 50 or 60 years, probably since World War II.  I think the changes are that dramatic."
He also said the administration was planning to expand the military into even more overseas bases so the United States could wage war quickly around the globe.
"Scattered in more than 50 nations, the al Qaeda network and other terrorist groups constitute an enemy unlike any other that we have ever faced.  And as our intelligence shows, the terrorists continue plotting to kill on an ever-larger scale, including here in the United States."
"Instead of losing thousands of lives, we might lose tens or even hundreds of thousands of lives as the result of a single attack, or a set coordinated of attacks.”
Cheney compared this moment to the challenges faced by President Harry Truman at the beginning of the Cold War, when there was a hot war flaring on the Korean Peninsula and a long-term nuclear standoff developing with the Soviet Union.
Cheney said Bush was establishing, as Truman had, “
a new structure for a new long-term war and spreading the military into new areas of the globe… On Sept. 11, 2001, our nation made a fundamental commitment that will take many years to see through."

US STARS HAIL IRAQ WAR WHISTLEBLOWER
GCHQ worker Katharine Gun faces jail for exposing American corruption in the run-up to war on Saddam.  Now her celebrity supporters insist it is Bush and Blair who should be in the dock.
by Martin Bright

Katharine Gun, an anonymous 29-year-old junior official toiling away with 4,500 other mathematicians, code-breakers and linguists at the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) in Cheltenham, is set to become a transatlantic cause célèbre as the focus of a star-studded solidarity drive that brings together Hollywood actor-director Sean Penn and senior figures from the US media and civil rights movement, including the Reverend Jesse Jackson.

Gun is accused of breaching the
Official Secrets Act by allegedly leaking details of a secret US 'dirty tricks' operation to spy on UN Security Council members in the run-up to war in Iraq last year.

Legal experts believe that her case is potentially
more explosive for the Government than the Hutton inquiry because it could allow her defence team to raise questions about the legality of military intervention in Iraq.  The Attorney General, Lord Goldsmith, is likely to come under pressure to disclose the legal advice he gave on military intervention - something he has so far refused to do.

At a hearing last November, Gun's legal team indicated that she would use a defence of 'necessity'.
'Any disclosures that may have been made were justified on the following grounds: because they exposed serious illegality and wrongdoing on the part of the US government who attempted to subvert our own security services; and to prevent wide-scale death and casualties among ordinary Iraqi people and UK forces in the course of an illegal war.'

Sean Pen
n and Jesse Jackson have already signed a statement of support for Gun and a broader campaign will be launched later this year.  They are joined by Daniel Ellsberg, of Pentagon Papers fame, who is keen to travel to Britain soon to meet Gun.

Other signatories of the statement, to be released in the coming weeks, include
Linda Foley, president of the Newspaper Guild, and Ramona Ripston of the American Civil Liberties Union, both in their personal capacities.

The statement reads in part:
'We honor Katharine Gun as a whistleblower who bravely risked her career and her very liberty to inform the public about illegal spying in support of a war based on deception.  In a democracy, she should not be made a scapegoat for exposing the transgressions of others… There has been much talk in recent months about the "special relationship" between the US and British governments, which led the world to war, but history tells us of another "special relationship" - between people of good will in the United States and Britain who worked together in opposition to slavery and colonialism, and most recently against the push for war on Iraq.  It is in the spirit of friendship between our peoples in defense of democracy that we sign this statement.'

The leaked memorandum - dated 31 January 2003 - from Frank Koza, chief of staff of the NSA's Regional Targets section, requested British intelligence help to discover the voting intentions of the key 'swing six' nations at the UN.  Angola, Cameroon, Guinea, Chile, Mexico and Pakistan were under intense pressure to vote for a second resolution authorising war in Iraq.  The plans also included e-mail surveillance and taps on home and office telephones.  The agency, which was seeking British assistance in the project, was interested in "the whole gamut of information that could give U.S. policymakers an edge in obtaining results favourable to U.S. goals."

The disclosure of the 'dirty tricks' memo caused serious diplomatic difficulties.  The socialist government in Chile demanded an immediate explanation.  The Chilean public is deeply sensitive to dirty tricks by the American intelligence services, which are still held responsible for the 1973 overthrow of the socialist government of Salvador Allende.  In the days that followed the disclosure, the Chilean delegation in New York distanced itself from the draft second resolution, scuppering plans to go down the UN route.

Opposition politicians are already increasing pressure on Tony Blair to release Goldsmith's legal advice.   Parliamentary answers last week to Lord Alexander of Weedon QC, the Tory head of the all-party legal reform group Justice, show that the Government recognises there are precedents for disclosure.

A summary of the legal advice published on 17 March last year showed that Goldsmith believed that UN Resolution 678, which authorised force against Iraq to eject it from Kuwait in 1990, could be used to justify the conflict.  This position has been fiercely criticised by most experts in international law, who argue that 678 applied specifically to the threat posed to the region by Saddam in 1990.  Alexander has accused Goldsmith of
'scraping the bottom of the legal barrel' and described the use of 678 as 'risible'.

A key figure could prove to be 54-year-old Elizabeth Wilmshurst, deputy legal adviser to the Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw, who stepped down on 21 March.  Wilmshurst is said to have left her post because she would not agree to Goldmith's legal advice.  Since leaving her post she has not spoken about the crucial discussions in the Foreign Office last March.
Many believe a second whistleblower could prove fatal to the Government.

Huummmmm your cares away
Instead of whistling a happy tune, try humming.  Researchers at the Karolinska Hospital in Sweden discovered that humming increases ventilation in the paranasal sinus cavities.  That’s significant because your sinuses are major producers of nitric oxide, which helps dilate capillary beds and increase blood flow.  When nitric oxide levels were measured during humming, researchers found that they were 15 times higher than during normal breathing!

Even more amazing is the fact that humming dramatically increased the exchange of gas in the nasal sinuses.  During humming, the gas exchange between the nasal passages and the sinuses was 98% during just one exhalation, almost a complete exchange.  Compare this with normal exhalation when the gas exchange rate was only 4%.

Why does this matter?  Poor gas exchange and poor circulation in the sinus cavities promote the perfect environment for bacterial growth and infections.  Based on the results of this study, the researchers feel that daily breathing exercises involving humming could help reduce the incidence of sinusitis and upper respiratory infections.

When you hum, you feel the vibration along the roof of your mouth and in your nasal cavity and sinuses.  It's amazing that this simple sound vibration can have such a profound effect on the exchange of gases and circulation in your upper respiratory tract.  This phenomenon undoubtedly is linked to the increased mental clarity experienced by individuals who hum mantras during meditation.  I suspect that humming various sounds for long periods of time would increase blood flow and oxygenation in the brain.

If you suffer from chronic sinus problems, try humming several times a day on a regular basis, and see if you don't notice an improvement.  In fact, it appears that a little humming would probably do us all some good, especially during winter.  It beats a flu shot any day of the week.

chutzpah // FEEDBACK
IS FRASER ANTI-SCOTIC?!
THE GREAT DEBATE CONTINUES
Hi Fraser,
I have to say, that I love reading the UP!  I look forward to the next email, and have for the more than 2 years that I’ve been subscribed (I was subscribed because I show signs of life so to speak).  I appreciate the open nature of the discussions and the inclusions of different view points on all topics.

That said, recent threads include a somewhat disturbing discussion of “The Jews”.

There’s no question that there are massive problems with the Israel/Palestine crisis, and that the Israeli government’s treatment of the Palestinian people is inhumane and despicable.  The fact that the US government has been influenced by pro-Israeli Jews is not in question either.

That said, I am not clear how this translates into general characterisations of “The Jews”.  Let’s talk about “The Muslims” , “The Blacks”, “The Irish”, “The Chinese” then and see how far we get.  We’d do just as well to talk about “The Martians”.
>> Muslims, well, there’s TONS of negative stuff being spouted on them.  Blacks, well, am sure they’ve had mucho to complain about   Irish, during the wars, were often discussed as a culture or a people.  Chinese - The Yellow Menace?  Martians  it’s generally believed over here that your fookin space generals shot down our lovely little Beagle
but the serious point is that NONE of them are doing anything remotely like what Israel is doing.  which claims and fights to be a “jewish state”.  do you honestly think that if the Irish were doing to the Welsh what Israel is doing to the Pals I wouldn’t be beginning to move beyond the (seemingly hopeless) politics to seriously question the very basis of the culture that might explain (and disconnect) the tragedy?!

Starting with (self-hating Jew? [see link below]) Jennifer Winkler’s half-baked “article” about Chutzpah, and then following with continuing threads such as supposedly “pro-active anti-racist Irishman” Mark Kavanagh’s statement “The most powerful lobby groups in Washington are the oil men from Texas, the car manufacturers, and the Jews” there is evidence to me of a very subtle, but nonetheless real, anti-Jewish sentiment in the UP!  As of late.  Racism, Anti-Semitism, and the like need not be hateful to be harmful.
>> no exaggeration now.  no ‘continuing threads,’ apart from the irishman and, of course, the 5 page reply from Geoff.

If anyone thinks that the Jews are the only group that has been repeatedly discriminated against for no apparent reason (as Jennifer Winkler would have us think), one need only study a little bit of Buddhist history to find that Buddhists have also been chased from country to country, murdered, tortured, and discriminated against throughout their history (see list of links below).  The situation in Tibet is only the most recent, and most visible to us due to the fact there is global media and modern communications technology to let all of us in the West know about it.  Moreover, the same claims of “Chutzpah’ cannot be made against Buddhists, so why has China virtually destroyed the world’s most advanced spiritual civilization?  The reasons are many, but just as with the situation of the Jewish people, is not a case of blame the victim.
>> me, I dunno.  nor care much, being scottish.  you seem in 2 minds.  have ‘the jews’ been persistently persecuted down history or not?  if they have, there might be a reason in what they do, and what would be wrong in wondering about that?

Prior to WWII, there was a general undercurrent of subtle anti-Semitism, even in the avant-garde and artistic communities in Germany.  It was subtle and not hateful, but it helped create an environment conducive to the genocide that would take place just years later.
>> OR, as I presume jennifer would argue, whatever had (originally, which could be ancient we haven’t agreed if there is a pattern yet) caused the “subtle anti-semitism” grew into something bigger.

People on this list should be intelligent AND sophisticated enough to realize that all of our consciousness’ are part of larger fields of consciousness, and that what we as supposed “progressive minded radicals” say and think does affect what the masses will say and think in the future.  If people that are “anti-racist” can make such an unsophisticated, stereotypical, statement then what does that say about people who are not as educated and intelligent?
>>I agree with that.  indeed the whole project of the UP! is exackly about that.  one hopes one’s area of influence will spread and ultimately dominate (dominate in the nicest possible way of course, in the evolutionary sense
but what IS it we want to transmit?  are you asking us to pull our punches in open debate on the grounds that it MIGHT have an effect later or because it HAS once in the past, or because it’s happened persistently in the past?  and, whichever one it is, surely, when faced with something that’s gone so horribly wrong as in israel in our lifetimes, we MUST dig deeper, in every possible potential direction, to seek an answer to it or at least a correct response.  if it’s a choice, ultimately, between the masses learning from us that we stood by while palestine died (for no very clear moral reason) (for the
Holocaust is getting more distant by the day remember) or that we unintentionally maligned some people and are we to ignore the cause of the thing we’re trying to prevent?
and is what she said “
stereotypical”?  personally, I’ve never heard the idea that jewish culture might have drawn antagonism down on itself by its chutzpah.  and it stuck a note with me because it’s the ONLY explanation for how sharon and gang are proceeding that I’ve ever heard (unless it’s the mad shepherd lad whom god told to slay all the hittites and establish god’s favourite kingdom and I really don’t want to buy that one!)  but sharon and gang’s cultural conditioning seems to be, when all the world is standing aghast and TELLING them to compromise and make a fair deal, to dig deeper into their belief that they’ll finally beat the palestinians into acquiescence and then we (“sophisticated westerners”) will finally come to our senses.

I think its scary.
>> it’s the chutzpah I see driving israel, and now seemingly washington that scares the hell out of me.

I think its scary that the UP!, under the guise of open discussion,
>> you’re doing it again, brian bro.  nobody’s hiding or sneaking in any secret agenda here, I thought you already accepted it was something like irresponsible loose talk (for the later masses) but NOT ‘guise’ful, no?

is putting that energy into the universe.  It is not the fact that there is discussion, it’s the tone and manner of the discussion that I find disconcerting. I think its irresponsible for you, Fraser, someone who should know better, to put this energy out there in this form.
>> I thank you for that “irresponsible”.  and I HAVE to assume that you know there isn’t a squintilla of anti-semitism in moi   look, brian and other jewish readers (of whom many more have written in regarding Peak Oil than this little local issue) I can truly understand, everybody can, that Hitler and the Holocaust made all jews paranoid.  I totally understand and sympathise with that, and no doubt you were brought up to be super-sensitive to the subject.  but the vast majority of people on the planet didn’t have that conditioning.  and I truly don’t see any signs of it rising in our culture.  I see anti-israel stuff all over the place, I hear complaints and mutterings of despair about that, but I can’t remember hearing a jewish joke in the last couple of years, for example.
the truth which you, brian and others, truly need to take to heart is that virtually nobody is any more anti-semitic than they’re anti-mexican or anti-scotitic since that’s the subject of our debate.
but (and here you have to peer deeply into your own culture) those responsible among you must stop trying to stifle debate on the israel issue (INCLUDING explorative discussion of cultural expectations and habits involved as in any other conflict) or you   will   be   in   danger  of   re-creating   the   very   phenomenon   you   fear   returning.

after all, why SHOULD it return  if it’s not persistent (in a way that persecution of buddhism doesn’t match).  and if it has been persistent down the ages, then you must begin to ask WHY.  is your demanding that I be ESPECIALLY careful in how I discuss this issue a form of the very chutzpah you refuse to consider seriously?!  tell me, brian, are you or are you not demanding special care when being discussed than I give to others?

it WON’T return in that way, anyway (so don’t go getting paranoid there is not the slightest chance of that, but you will start to piss people off if you keep harping on about how we keep harping on because
WE DON’Twe really don’t.  to be absolutely honest (and all gentiles won’t need any convincing of this) I actually feel a bit guilty because I don’t discuss the palestinian horror ENOUGH.  the reasons I don’t are that it usually attracts viruses (BUT NOT THIS TIME!) plus I then have to deal at length with worried, touchy but intelligently argued letters like yours.  who needs it I figure and get back to smacking bush and the dinosaurs.  but I reckon sharon looks and is the daddy of the dinosaurs, no?

which reminds me.  somebody referred to some elite class or something within the jewish diaspora who
might be the actual source of this chutzpah.  i asked for more detail but nobody has filled it in yet.  if there’s some truth in this, then for god’s sake start sharing it with us sophisticated moderns before everyone gets tarred with it, right?  we’re on YOUR side, THEY’RE NOT!  (if they exist and I’m asking)

The fact that discourses on this subject have taken this turn is not surprising. 911 was engineered to put into motion just this sort of thing.  In Buddhism there is the notion of “seeds”.  Actions and thoughts act like seeds in that they grow in many directions in our lives and affect out future experiences. 911 planted one hell of a seed in the collective psyche, an enormously negative one at that, and the fractal-like tendrils have finally found their way to this community. Please think about what I am saying and nip this in the bud immediately.  The world is in a very precarious position right now, there are many possible outcomes, but the next 20-30 years may be make it or break it for us as a planet, or as a species if nothing else.  The people that are involved in this community, whatever it is, need to be the positive ones and plant positive seeds, not reap the negative planted by others. Let’s not devolve into discussions about “The Jews” just because the Israeli government needs to go.
>> but, brian, the canadian government isn’t doing anything so terrible!  i agree with every word above.  am not quite sure what seed you mean.  I’ll guess you’re saying some evil muslims did it to give the jews a bad name?  if so, you’re almost 100% wrong.  in that scenario, this was a fruit, not a seed, a fruit on the tree of palestine and the entire abused, bamboozled and enslaved arab world.

let’s seek agreement here.  we agree the israeli government needs to go.  we agree what it’s doing there is “
inhumane and despicable”.  but we agree that israel, as a whole, as a society, doesn’t agree with us, ALMOST NO MATTER HOW BAD IT GETS FOR THE PALS.  so, come on brother, where do we go when NOTHING seems to do anything but make it worse?  if we criticise too much we get critiqued back.  where do we go next, bro.  it’s an israeli/jewish state, it’s not a catholic irish state nor a hindu indian state, so you tell me how.  isn’t the next step, when politics won’t reveal any solution, to look at the culture, the belief systems and so on.  which was all ms wrinkler (jewish?) was doing.  and now a 2 page article (out of a single 22 page mag) has produced 14 pages of response.  out of proportion?  I’d say.  with nary a word on the Actual Problem I want to discuss.  when the bosnians tried this we bommed the hell out of them and imposed a solution.  we’ve given them enough rope already.  and even then we get criticised if we criticise.  you’re just being paranoid, take it from me.
hey, u other readers, tell him he’s imagining demons, come on!

I could say a lot more, but for the sake of conciseness, I’ll leave it here.
Sincerely,
Brian Jackson, MA / New York

REPLY:
Thanks for the response.  I just need to make it clear.  There needs to be a distinction between the Jewish state of Israel and Jews at large.  Sharon and gang DO NOT represent the Jews, just Israel!  As a matter of fact, their arrogance seems to match that of the Bush Administration, except the details of the situations are very different.  I’m horrified by what is going on in Israel and I think its disgusting the way that government is treating the Palestinians, especially given the persecuted history of the now persecutors.

I’m not asking anyone to pull any punches, so to speak, just to make sure that they aren’t falling into subtle traps of racism/anti-semitism that messes like the Israel/Palestine situation tend to breed.  The main point of my letter was to point out what I perceived to be subtle currents heading in the wrong direction on this list.  It is always my intention to bring things to light that I feel others are not seeing or are conflating.  Its my gift and curse :)
>> me 2

From what I understand there is a large split in the Israeli population as there is in the US over the current governments.  There’s a lot of independent cinema coming from Israel that is dissident, btw.  Example:
http://www.wildfist.com/films/areak.html

This is obviously an extremely complex topic that no single one of us is going to figure out for ourselves.  Perhaps this thread was a necessary “cleaning out” so that deeper debates on the issue can now move forward.

Also, it is interesting to look at the parallels of the Buddhists and the Jews. For example look here

Keep up the good work!

UP! As a secular Jew, I fear that if the Jewish community continues to censure anyone who dares to raise legitimate criticisms of Israeli policy, then it's simply in danger of increasing the very anti-semitism it claims to be trying to prevent.  One of Jenny Tonge's most important points is being completely ignored - the fact of Israeli illegal occupation of Palestinian land and the repressive measures that accompany it. Tonge has done us all a service - including the Jewish community, which should be thanking her for her insight, not castigating her.

Leading UK scientist Professor David Nutt told the Guardian that ecstasy is 'unquestionably non addictive’, and appears to be "relatively safe in the short term."

though the authorities prefer not to make the comparison, roughly 20 deaths a year ranks ecstasy alongside electric blankets in a list of Britain's biggest killers," the Guardian added.

Sorcerer’s Apprentice:
My Life with Carlos Castaneda by Amy Wallace
Reviewed by Brian Doherty

Carlos Castaneda's books have been a pop-cultural phenomenon since the late '60s.  His 1968 UCLA anthropology dissertation, "The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge," published by Simon & Schuster, became a mass-market sensation.  It and a continual series of sequels became standard accoutrements for those yearning to exhibit their interest in a mystical world of awareness beyond the bland boredom of middle-class American existence.
>> read, brian was busy making business and assumed there wasn’t much to it

His books' tales of learning from a Mexican shaman named Don Juan seemed more fantastic than anthropological - indeed, the standard view in the field now is that Castaneda made most of it up.
>> but then jesus hisself was made up so where does that leave us?

Although Don Juan's use of natural psychedelics to shake up Castaneda's consciousness doubtless appealed to many readers, Castaneda's worldview was far from recreational.
>> there’s some weird assumption here that psychedelics are about having FUN, but let it pass.

He painted life as a desperate struggle in a predatory universe, waged against extra dimensional "flyers" eating our awareness.  But he held out the promise that, through sorcerous techniques such as those he learned from Don Juan, one could become a powerful spiritual warrior and travel through infinity beyond apparent human death.  Tens of millions of readers ate this stuff up.

Amy Wallace, daughter of popular novelist
Irving Wallace, first met Castaneda through her father in the early 1970s.  As this memoir of her tortured relationship with him recounts, she re-entered his world in the early '90s and became one of his lovers until his death in 1998.

The world Wallace paints isn't one of brave warriors beyond human pettiness striving for the prize of infinite life in infinite dimensions.  It is more  like a combination of
Jackie Collins and Sweet Valley High gone wrong  a gaggle of cruel harridans fighting for status through disturbing psychological gamesmanship in a screwy, destructive clique, vying for the approval of a squirrelly dying old man on Los Angeles's west side.
>> he’s described the followers, not the teacher.

The book is not artful.
>> since the reviewer is, this is a compliment.

But It is a compelling page-turner, full of secrets, betrayals and uncharacterisable wackiness.  Castaneda assured Wallace that his magic sperm went straight to a woman's brain, where it effected positive change - and could not impregnate, as his lovers were merely human.  He could read newspapers through his toes.  With charisma based on such incredible claims, he kept everyone around him in constant anxiety by alternately offering warm approval and assaulting their inherent worth.

The reader grows to understand Castaneda, and even to find him strangely charming.
>> ah ha!

Our heroine, though, remains opaque where the reader needs to understand.  Why would a talented and intelligent woman tolerate this nonsense for so long - until Castaneda's death and even beyond?
>> perhaps ask yourself, brian?

Wallace's heart clearly remains a mystery even to herself.  As the absurdities and lies of the sorcerer's world pile up, the sceptical reader can't help but lose sympathy with Wallace for not doing her own vanishing act.

OUR MAN IN BAKU
MEET ANOTHER OF OUR NEW SADDAMS
3 months ago, after an election condemned by international observers as blatantly fraudulent, Ilham Aliyev was inaugurated as president of the oil-rich Muslim country of Azerbaijan
Remember the name of the West’s new ally, you’ll be encouraged to bomm the hell out of the monster a decade or less from now.  Add it to the other
New Saddam we gave you last week: Islam Karimov of Uzbekistan.  I can already hear the president’s pronunciation!  “Ill Ham was out fren, BUT, in the cause of endless freedom…” OR “I say to you, Carry’Im Off, Bring it ON!”  They’ll like that in the Mid West.  Do you suppose their PR Ops Team is consulted about the actual names of allies?  Would they ever allow an alliance with, say Happy G'lucky?

Back to this
New Saddam.  Opposition members who tried to protest were brutally beaten by police, prompting a massive nationwide crackdown in which more than 1,000 people were arrested, including opposition leaders, activists from nongovernmental organisations, journalists and election officials objecting to the fraud.  More than 100 remain in prison, including most of the senior opposition activists.  A new report by Human Rights Watch documents numerous cases of torture, including severe beatings, electric shock, and threats of rape against the opposition leaders.  Mr. Aliyev, who succeeded his strongman father, has meanwhile been consolidating dictatorial powers: most recent: being named director of Azerbaijani radio and television. Useful, no?

Azerbaijan, in short, might look like a good place for President Bush to start implementing his frequently declared policy of "
spreading freedom" t - and in particular the greater Middle East. But surprise, surprise, he’s doing the opposite.  The president and his top aides have embraced Mr. Aliyev, excused his fraud, and ignored his human rights violations - not to mention reliable reports of his personal corruption.

The
world-saddamising u.s. administration waived congressional restrictions to grant Azerbaijan $3 million of military aid, and is winding up to give still more.  The Pentagon’s discussing Azeri bases for U.S. operations.  And Rumsfeld visited Baku last month for private chats with Mr. Aliyev.  Oh yes, when some fool brought up the electoral fraud?  You could write it yourself: "The United States has a relationship with this country. We value it."  About 100 billion dollars worth maybe?  Chipped in the new Saddam/Sucker proudly: "The United States is a strategic partner."

Despite Pentagon arguments that Azerbaijan help is needed to stop such things as terrorists travelling across the Caspian Sea, a more obvious motive is oil.  Over the last decade Aliyev and his father granted billions in contracts to BP-Amoco, ChevronTexaco and ExxonMobil.  He also supports a $3 billion pipeline to carry oil from the Caspian to a port in Turkey.  Bush once pronounced Aliyev an honorary citizen of Texas for his support for American oil companies.  Installed by his dying father as prime minister last August, the US president’s congratulatory letter was among the first in.

American diplomats and oil execs will portray Aliyev as an urbane pro-Westerner, a secret moderate who plans to liberalise his dad’s police state.  Right.  Azerbaijanis see this as ludicrous.  At 42, Aliyev is renowned in Baku as a playboy with a bad gambling habit.  During his tenure at the state oil company, Transparency International rated Azerbaijan the world’s 6th most corrupt nation! There’s an unsealed indictment in New York charging that millions of dollars in bribes were channelled to top Azeri officials in 1997 as part of a scheme to privatise the oil company, of which Mr. Aliyev was then vice president.  And, since his "election," Aliyev has not only reappointed his father's key ministers, he’s also promised to pursue the same policies!  Apparently these include ruthless suppression of the peaceful and pro-democracy opposition.

Expediency ruling again, just like those decades of propping up dictators in the Persian Gulf, so what’s new?!  Well, a lotta people are already hip to what’s going on.  AND Mr. Bush himself has said that such policies were mistaken.
"60 years of Western nations excusing and accommodating the lack of freedom in the Middle East did nothing to make us safe. In the long run stability cannot be purchased at the expense of liberty."

Why did he say that?  Because the shit’s starting to come out about the past.  Cut your losses, George.  While they’re busy raking over the past, things continue as normal.

UP! So the Israeli embassy wouldn't "expect any human being to express an understanding of such atrocities".  This lack of insight is precisely why the bombings will continue.  Israelis must recognise their responsibility in creating the conditions whereby people are driven to such levels of desperation and frustration.  And it's time our own politicians understood that they fuel this despair by their refusal to take active measures to stop Israel's land-grab.

as for getting banned, it still amazes me. maybe you should send them this bit from my editorial: "
living in a fledgling near-democracy such as ours (I use the term advisedly), I consider it my SACRED DUTY to continuously probe & point up its weakest points, its failings, and to ruthlessly hold that democracy to the highest possible account. this is the duty of anyone lucky enough to live in a democracy! and only by doing this, can I maximise my chances of helping the rest of the world. (by helping I mostly mean not screwing over.)"
UP!  Jesus saves...but Beckham catches the rebound! He shoots! HE SCOOORES!
