am really not in the mood 2 write this but i can’t let the capture of saddam pass without comment.

how do we morally judge this, or indeed any, event?  in such an increasingly schizophrenic world there will always be reasons for and against.  more planes allow more common people to explore the world but ruins the atmosphere.  kucinich would be the most moral president but voting for him could also allow bush in again.  or he’s more likely to be assassinated for trying to move things too quickly etc while dean would make small but possibly significant improvements.  america’s stupid definition of security means insecurity and terror for the rest of the planet.

in the end the judgement must be based on what you consider the Overall Historical Plot.  and to me it seems clear that the concept of the people of the planet ruling themselves fairly is the overall direction in which the vast majority wish the planet to develop.  this is resisted or delayed to the max by the minority Ruling Elite.  it’s been going on for (at least) hundreds of years.

right?

now, tho i’m aware (because you tell me!) that no small number of UP! readers consider the actual movement is away from rather than towards this ideal, that’s to take an extremely short perspective.  in history’s broader sweep, the movement is inexorably towards this ideal, with many delays along the way, and ultimately (as now) the final virulent spasm of reactionary rejectionary fury against this creeping “kissy-touchy” planet that’s yearning itself into existence (so far without america :) 

indeed, i take this rightwing gambit as just that, a surfacing of Final Resistance to a process of ‘real democratisation’ that launched itself through the first crack in the Roman Christian State monopoly during the Reformation, and then Renaissance and then, of course, mass Revival of the ‘60s and of Rave Culture.  as the I CHING says: “if there was no resistance, no change would be happening and nothing would be being achieved.” 

and as the unstoppable process proceeds, it’s an inevitable effect of the neo-cons’ inevitable intellectual attempt to usurp the inevitable global village into a brutally maintained security-managed macdonalds-machinegun megalopolis that their anti-social greed is beamed to a global public who glimpse, for the first time, that this sick sooper-class and their administrative yes-men are THE ACTUAL PROBLEM; and have been the problem all along!


some kind of End Game is clearly in progress.  any movement anyone makes will inevitably involve ‘good’ and ‘bad’, but we won’t get ‘dazed & confused’ by the detail if we stick to our agreed Overall Direction for planetary society (not just us lucky westerners!))

now let us judge saddam’s seizure by whether it moves global society in the agreed Overall Direction or away from it.  (it’s the argument against the war: was it necessary?  justified? an immediate threat?  honest?  ‘good’?)

consider this as a real possibility:  since the biggest ugliest threat, by a million miles, to the agreed Overall Direction is led by the Bush Gang (and their Evil Empire and spawning network of conscience-less quislings) then their seizure of a major leader of the armed resistance, ‘inevitably’ produced by their actions, can only be regarded as Bad News.

of course he’s a monster (of their making, not ours!), all who employ violence and glory in competition are some degree of monsters this is the whole crux of the philosophical position of we who’ve chosen the path of cooperation & non-violence! 

but, while saddam’s armed monsterhood was strictly ‘regional’ in terms of potential global threat, the damage the Bush Gang class leadership can do (and are doing) is almost unlimited.  that this very Vampire Elite Resistance to the agreed Overall Direction stupidly and unconsciously CREATED saddam in the first place is less than half the story.  the “anti-terror tactics” and anonymous assassination squads being employed by professional psychopaths, and the brutal border-free morality-free legality-free asymmetric guerrilla ‘training’ being pumped into amateur psychopaths in scores of countries worldwide (the identical dinosaur vision and social irresponsibility that created saddam!) CONSTITUTES A FULL-OUT ASSAULT ON OUR FUTURE!! 

now, of course, the ‘seizure’ of saddam will ‘inevitably’ lead bush into deeper problems.  but my point is that, since saddam was small potatoes on this level, and since the (rejected) leader of what he demonically calls “the free world” is trashing humanity’s future by the minute, there can be no doubt who constitutes the Greatest Threat to WoMankind.

(if you want to score saddam against bush on a more personal level, try reversing their positions.  would bush have been more or less bloody if he’d been born in saddam’s position?  bush is a man, remember, who, even when most ‘civilised’ nations have rejected the death penalty as barbarous, executed gaily on in the name of “Caring Republicanism”!   saddam nationalised the oil business and spent it on the country’s infrastructure, did bush ever once in his life even THINK about such a move?! )
(another comparison:  when bush kidnaps saddam he publicly humiliates him.  when saddam kidnapped the english family, he hugged the little boy captive - AND WAS IMMEDIATELY DEMONISED BY THE WESTERN PRESS!)

in essence, the Bush Boys came to power with the intention of invading first afghanistan, then iraq, then syria and iran (with venezuela in there somewhere)  thanks mainly to saddam’s resistance (and iraqis’ and chavez’ and peace campaigners’ and all levels of brave resisters’) syria and iran have had to be postponed at least till after the presidential elections.

the neo-con vision of the Secured Global Village®, with them and their progeny eternal major shareholders, is falling apart before our and their eyes.  they expected (and planned!) for all resistance to have collapsed by now!  they totally underestimated people’s resistance to their plans!  they simply didn’t realise that people could be so... moral!!! :) 

SADDAM’S CAPTURE WILL ENCOURAGE THEM :(
AND THE BRAIN-liteD PEASANTS WHO SUPPORT THEM.

“The torture chambers and the secret police are gone forever.”  George Bush, announcing the capture of Saddam.
When the real and true history of the U.S., European, and Israeli-controlled-and-occupied Middle East is written some day, the events of the year 2003 will indeed be featured prominently.   But it won't be because the "torture chambers and secret police are gone forever."
        Those very torture chambers and secret police were set up when Iraq was one of the main up-and-coming allies of the budding American empire, quite literally courted by the White House and corporate America.  
        Before that, right next door, in Iran during the days of the Shah, the CIA had not only put Reza Pavlavi back on the throne (foiling a peaceful democratic revolution that sought to legitimately nationalise Iranian oil) but also worked intimately with the Shah's regime to create torture chambers and secret police every bit as cruel and brutal as those of Saddam's Iraq.
        And now, in the year 2003, as the American Empire extends its hold on the region and as the Israelis impose neo-apartheid concentration-camp rule on the Palestinians, the torture chambers and the secret police remain very much part of the regional landscape.   They are, in fact, most prominent in the main U.S. allies of the region today -- Israel, Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia.  
Indeed, in the Middle East of 2003 -- a region now nearly totally dominated by U.S. and Israeli military force, economic imperialism, and covert actions -- the CIA is more responsible than ever for this despicable state of affairs, with actual U.S. policies exceedingly anti-democratic, reactionary, and repressive even as American rhetoric continually now harps on about 'freedom', 'democracy', and 'peace process'.

VATICAN CITY - A top Vatican official said Tuesday he felt pity and compassion for Saddam Hussein and criticised the U.S. military for showing video footage of him being treated "like a cow."
        Cardinal Renato Martino, head of the Vatican's Justice and Peace department and a former papal envoy to the United Nations, told a news conference it would be "illusory" to think his arrest would heal all the damage caused by a war which the Holy See opposed.
        "I felt pity to see this man destroyed, (the military) looking at his teeth as if he were a cow. They could have spared us these pictures," he said.  "Seeing him like this, a man in his tragedy, despite all the heavy blame he bears, I had a sense of compassion for him," he said.
The Vatican did not consider the war in Iraq "a just war" because it was not backed by the United Nations and because the Vatican believed more negotiations were necessary to avoid it.

DEFIANT PRISONER FACES LONG INTERROGATION
After a 30 minute meeting with four members of the Iraqi Governing Council on Sunday afternoon, in which Saddam repeatedly swore at them and denied using chemical weapons against the Kurds in 1988, US interrogators took over...
        Asked whether Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction, he replied: “No, of course not.  The US dreamed them up itself to have a reason to go to war against us.”
        His CIA questioner persisted, asking: “If you had none, then why did you not let the UN inspectors into your facilities?”  Saddam replied: “We didn’t want them to go into the presidential areas and intrude on our privacy.”
        From the moment he was dragged from a hole by US troops, Saddam has maintained that he is the rightful ruler of Iraq.  When first questioned he refused to answer anything directly.  When asked “How are you?” he replied “I am sad, because my people are in bondage.”  Offered some water he replied “If I drink water I will have to go to the bathroom and how can I use this bathroom when my people are in bondage.”
        There was no doubt in Washington and Baghdad  yesterday that Saddam is in for the “long haul.”  If Saddam does not cooperate, officials are expected to operate under the same guidelines used in the interrogation of senior al-Queda figures.  These allow questioners to subject prisoners to limited pain and discomfort.

Saddam has bequeathed to his country and to its would-be "liberators" something uniquely terrible: continued war.  This was one conclusion upon which every Iraqi I spoke to yesterday agreed.
This bedraggled, pathetic man with his matted, dirty hair, living in a hole in the ground with three guns and cash as his cave-companions - this man was not leading the Iraqi insurgency against the Americans. 
Indeed, more and more Iraqis were saying before Saddam's capture that the one reason they would not join the resistance was the fear that - if the Americans withdrew - Saddam would return to power.  Now that fear has been taken away.  So the nightmare is over - and the nightmare is about to begin.

St Peter, in full festive gear and obviously just back from a party, joshes: "All right, my good men, nobody gets in unless they’re carrying something to do with Christmas."
The first guy produces his lighter, and flicks it on and off. "Oh I gettit, lights! says St Peter. That would be Christmas lights. Come on in, and here's a bottle to keep you happy.Next?

I’ve just been flicking thorough Bubble Jam mag, and noticed the name Fraser Clark on the contents page.  Thinking "it can't be...Oh My God it is!"  THE Fraser Clark, as in Megatripolis, the greatest club I ever went to, that I regularly bore people about whenever music, drugs, society or whatever is the subject of conversation.
I'm loath to get into hero worship, but I completely admire what you did with those nights, which became like a home when I couldn't stand the place I was living (Surrey - dark days!).

The Great Tobacco Sting
How The World’s First Multinational Swindled The People Out Of Some Fabulous ‘Smoking’ Experiences And Palmed Them Off With Addictive Leaves And Chemicals

PART ONE investigated the Sitting Bull Theory that Raleigh got high from an Indian Chief’s Peace Pipe, but was swindled with “a kilo of the lousy brown stuff” which we’ve been smoking ever since!

PART TWO explores just how this Sting was carried out.


The ‘Lost’ Herbs
In 1559, Phillip 11’s personal physician described 1200 species of flora in Mexico alone, while different New Worlde tribes had been inhaling in a plethora of ways many mixes of substances still not fully documented today. 

But one thing is undeniable: the Virginia Colony’s first “commercial” shipment which was sold to an eager populace in London in 1617 at the unheard-of price of 3 shillings a pound was Nicotiana Tabacum [see box at end].  It was the same plant which the Virginia Company merchandised out from London and then across Europe.  And it is this single plant which millions of people have been smoking right up to the present day.

Let us be clear.  Since at least the Old World’s ancient Scythians, and the New World’s Mayans, ‘smoking’ and “tobacco” have meant many things to Mankind  chewing, brews, taking smoke or powder via nose, mouth, anus and skin, by inhaling fumes from a fire, under a blanket, in a tiny hut, through pipe, ‘cigar’, hole in the ground, and with many different substances, herbs, seeds, leaves, roots, flowers, crystals, tars etc

But exclusively, from 1617, through commercial, contractual and ultimately legal availability, nearly everyone has smoked Nicotiana Tabacum.

This Great Tobacco Sting probably constitutes History’s first cynical corporate monopoly scam, perpetrated on the maximum number of ‘suckers’, for 386 years!  An inspiringly wide range of Psychoactive Smoking Experiences was reduced to the repetitive daily sucking of the seriously addictive, health-destroying mono-culture, Nicotiana Tabacum.


What The Suppliers Were Smoking
Nicotiana is native to the Americas, largely confined to the warm humid climate of the West Indies and Brazil.  Sometimes it was involved in the mix, more often not. 

While Europeans largely viewed it as a medicine or an ornamental plant, England spread the habit of recreational smoking to the mainland, alarming the locals like modern Brit football hooligans with alcohol.  The tabloid headline would have been “CROWDS THROW BEER OVER SMOKING ENGLISHMEN” (it often happened).

Though Columbus smoked it in 1492, and though the word covered many delights, in England Sir Walter Raleigh is held to have ‘discovered’ “tobacco” in 1585.  Certainly he became a life-long puffer.

Raleigh was a freethinking adventurer and marketing genius who rose from humble beginnings, achieved fame as a pirate, founded England’s first colonies, was knighted, jailed, freed, jailed again, and finally went to his execution demanding his beloved pipe (with whatever he smoked in it).

He gained an exclusive Royal Trade Licence for the American mainland from his ‘smoking’ companion, Elizabeth 1, naming the Virginia Colony for her (Virgin Queen, geddit?)

In 1586, Thomas Harriot, Raleigh’s right hand man, publicly named “tobacco” as the only Colony commodity able to “reap massive cash dividends.”   With his money and reputation heavily invested in Virginia, Raleigh had actually commissioned Harriot’s survey of the colony as an investment promo, and now decided to develop what was then a  “novelty” into a market!  With his networks of pirates, court connections, fellow puffers, writers and artists, ex-colonists, and merchants, he set about spreading the new “smoking” habit - to such effect (on Elizabeth, rumoured a lifetime puffer, Shakespeare, Bacon, Marl owe, Edmund Spenser, Ben Jonson) that word spread from court to court, country to country... and ultimately from class to class.

By the Virgin Queen’s death (1603), Robert Burton satirically listed the required accomplishments of the English Gentleman as “smoking, dancing, hunting, and playing cards”!  Professors of “smoking academies” demanded ring-blowing as a graduation test!  And ‘tobacco’ “sold for its weight in silver”!
Most odd if it was (always) just tobacco, particularly since the Virginia species, Nicotiana Rusticum, was, “poore, weak and of a byting taste”.  (Nicotiana Tabacum was soon borrowed from the Spanish.)

If the freewheeling Spirit and Romance of the Elizabethan Golden Age had been secretly fuelled, like the 1960s, by these new psychoactive mixes, the Catholic James 1, crowned in 1604, had to stamp down on such wild ‘free-thinking’ ideas.  When Parliament refused to illegalise it, did he fall into line, consciously or not, with an upper-class conspiracy to increasingly channel the peasants towards the “lousy brown stuff”?!  It would be “business as usual” in the drug trade if tobacco, initially cultivated as a cheap ‘extender’ for other exportable products, ended as the product itself! 

Certainly the ‘Great Tobacco Sting” was complete by 1620 when, with the investment of a gigantic 6 figure sum, the Virginia Colony was instructed to grow Nicotiana Tabacum for mass British consumption.

Yet does Thomas Harriot’s original pitch sound like a Marlboro trip to you?  ”Strange gestures, stamping, dancing, clapping of hands, and staring into the heavens uttering strange noises.“  Or this: “We have had many rare, wonderful proofs of its beneficial effects which would require a whole volume to itself”  Really?!  Tobacco?!

In A History of Smoking, Count Corti makes the situation lucidly clear: “These results, we may assume, were produced by various narcotic plants, not merely tobacco” 

Eager for extra tax income, James withdrew Raleigh’s licence, condemned ‘tobacco’ as 'an invention of Satan', and imposed a 4000% increase in custom duty.  Classic Drug War Logic.  Public condemnation in colourful prose accelerates the habit’s spread among the masses and hugely increases his tax base.

Drug war logic predicts what came next: “the bizness” was driven into the hands of smugglers!  Pirates!  And home-growers, all across the land.

Keeping his head down, the former “court darling” continued secretly as top adviser to the Virginia Company.  Secret conspiracies were the essence of the period -  secrecy between royal advisers and Raleigh’s network (he being finally executed for treason!), between merchants and the public they were duping and addicting, between people who could score the “real stuff” and... the mugs?  For never forget how Giralamo Benzoni described a native smoking “tobacco”: “On returning to his senses, he told a thousand stories of being at the council of the gods and other high visions” 

The king’s antipathy towards Raleigh might be explained by his wish for people to buy his non-psychedelic tobacco (with ‘devil’ removed!) and Raleigh’s smuggler friends  who were still pushing the “real stuff” (angelic highs).
 

First Corporate Scam of the 2nd Millennium!
Catholic Charles 1, in 1626, with exports increased by half a million pounds, sold stakes in the fabulously profitable scam for huge sums. The Virginia Company, first of several South Sea type Bubbles (only this one still hasn’t burst!), generated great excitement, tinged with the idea of “adventure”.  Only now it was adventure capitalism! 

Increasingly based on slavery (bigger profits!), thousands were forcefully transported to Jamestown, there to be forced to work under such harsh conditions that three quarters failed to complete their 7-year period of servitude alive.

A modern American text puts it thus: “In the Virginia Colony /Company we see the fleeting ugliness of private enterprise operating without check, greed magnified by opportunity, producing fortunes for a few and misery for many.  We also see Virginians moving towards a system of labour that treated men as things.”  The Virginia Settlement was, in fact, “the starting place for the 244-year holocaust of African slavery.”

By 1630, tobacco prices had fallen to their lowest point ever.  WHAT COULD EXPLAIN THAT?  Unmet expectations?  “I don’t feel a thing, Sidney, except dizzy. Are you sure this is what they smoke at court?!”  It obviously took time for the common man to realise that everything called “tobacco” didn’t necessarily get you high  like ecstasy I hear you say?

On the mass level, however, imports continued to rise, there was an endless supply of new ‘suckers’ - increasingly due to actual, paid advertising.

What became of the “lost herbs” between then and the re-emergence of a generation of “tobacco mixers” in the 1960s?  Certainly the American Indians continued their old ways [see PART ONE].  Also, various “special mixes” continued as late as the 19th century, we know this from one of Conan Doyle’s paeans to his famous “Arcadia Mix”.

Thus an inspiringly wide range of Psychoactive Smoking Experiences that might have inspired the Elizabethan Age (and the course of history) was filtered down, by Christians and Puritan Work Ethic Businessmen, to the repetitive (but obscenely profitable) daily sucking of a seriously addictive, health-destroying mono-culture, Nicotiana Tabacum. 
Do the obscene profits and taxes involved explain why, even though James 1 and many others condemned “tobacco” from day one as a health hazard, the Virginia Colony and the tobacco industry it spawned has never invested a penny into investigating the effects of their ‘product’ on the health of the conned consumers to whom they (illegally?) “passed it off”?
Has the tobacco industry, in fact, used some of its profits to buy and conceal evidence of a conspiracy that has ended up causing a health holocaust of historical proportions?
Would, indeed, a small matter like hooking generations on a devil weed and robbing them of a range of angelic highs have put such ‘adventure capitalists’ off?  You know the answer!

In 1996 a group of neo-conservatives with declared Zionist leanings and links to the Israeli Likud Party prepared a report for Benjamin Netanyahu, then prime minister of the Likud government.  Its recommendations were as follows:
1)      Make a "clear break" with the policy of negotiating with the Palestinians and attempts to exchange "land for peace".
2)      Israel should shape its "strategic" environment by weakening, containing and even "rolling back" Syria.
3)      Iraq's future can be made to affect the strategic balance in the Middle East profoundly.
4)      The principle of "pre-emption" should be re-established.
These guidelines for Israeli policy are being put into practice by the US and Israeli governments.  As regards the principle of "pre-emptive strikes," it is in part Likud inspired, remembering that the first "pre-emptive" strike on an Arab country was the Israeli attack against the Iraqi nuclear reactor more than 20 years ago.

While the presence of a powerful Zionist influence in the American administration is not new, Zionists have gained a striking ascendancy in the present administration, eliminating any Arab leanings to speak of.  All these high level policy makers believe that US interests in the Middle East coincide largely with those of Israel and that the policies of the present administration and the measures it takes should be directed towards making the area "safe" for the self-proclaimed Jewish state. 

In the neo-conservative strategy papers of six years ago "making the Middle East safe for Israel" meant "redefining Iraq" after "getting rid of Saddam Hussein and his tyrannical regime", transforming of the Middle East by "redrawing its map", including "regime changes" of governments in the area not completely in line with "American and Israeli interests", "nurturing alternatives to Arafat" and "the end of the Israeli- Palestinian peace process".

The US hopes to go on executing the rest of the neo-conservative plan for a permanent military presence in Iraq -- which will guarantee the flow of oil -- with other "pre-emptive strikes" against Syria (where Sharon has already directed a "symbolic" raid, showing the way so to speak), or against Iran, or any other country in the area where disobedience might grow, or which could constitute a potential threat to US-Israeli interests as defined by the rulers of those two countries.

So after Iraqi oil has been privatised, the resistance of the Iraqi people quelled (if that is possible), and a permanent military base established, the Bush administration can move on to another stage.  A report suggesting military action against Syria was circulated and released three years ago.

Christian conservatives cast 2/5 of Republican votes by the 1994 Congressional elections.  The most zealous Christian supporters of the Likud in the Republican electorate are Southern Protestant, Baptist, Evangelical and other fundamentalist followers. 

This religious right believes that God gave all of Palestine to the Jews.  Fundamentalist congregations and business circles have collected hundreds of millions of dollars to subsidise Jewish settlements in the occupied territories.  Bush Zionists have helped speed up the growth of a messianic strain of Christian fundamentalism which believes that
-       war between Israelis and Arabs is ordained by God
-       complete occupation / domination of Palestine is a necessary condition for the fulfilment of the Biblical "millennium" End of Days
-       the Messiah will appear who will rule the world for 1000 years from Jerusalem.

Jewish fundamentalists struggling to impose Israeli domination, and Christian fundamentalists working for the so-called "millennial" End of Days, strengthen one another and increase the chances of a religious war.  They are allied for an agenda which aims at implementing a vast imperial restructuring of the Middle East, reinforced by multinationals pirating for oil.

It’s become clear that Sharon has no intention of dismantling the settlements and handing back occupied territory to the Palestinians.  There are a quarter of a million heavily armed, and heavily subsidised, Israeli settlers in these territories and their numbers are growing.  Most of these settlers are prepared to kill if they are asked to, and many of them are hard-headed fundamentalists with a terrorist streak.  Israel has consistently and blatantly refused to respect UN resolutions demanding withdrawal from the occupied territories.  Israel is also the only Middle Eastern state known to possess genuine and lethal weapons of mass destruction.  Israel knows that with the Iraqi war the United States under Bush has finally decided to destabilise the Middle East and reconfigure the region in a manner that would be favourable to her.

... Bush was hoping resistance to his aggressive policies would be vanquished by the exercise of overwhelming military force, first in Afghanistan, but much more importantly in Iraq.  With the Iraqi army crushed, occupation forces would be able to destroy, coerce or bribe any potential resistance, and the Bush administration could move quickly to privatise Iraqi oil and engage its next "major theatre" wars against Syria, Iran, North Korea, and others. 

But what’s happening in Afghanistan is largely surrounded by silence.  The truth is that, apart from Kabul, the occupation forces control nothing.  The rest is divided up among the warlords, but more significant is that the Taliban are steadily regaining control of important parts of the land, and that US forces are facing something akin to the war of attrition that sapped the lifeblood of the Soviets for 10 years until their final, ignominious withdrawal.

However, the more pressing problem is Iraq.  With 150,000 troops there, attacks against the occupation forces are spreading, control is loosening and difficulties are increasing.  American families are losing their sons.  General Anthony Zinni, former head of the Central Command of US military forces, asks "Are we facing another Vietnam?" as the "resistance fighters" gain more experience and versatility, and as popular resistance expresses itself in a variety of ways.

With a total national deficit of almost half-a-trillion dollars, the administration asked for, and got, an extra $87 billion for "Emergency Spending" on Iraq and Afghanistan.  This is on top of the first instalment of $75 billion (the 1991 Gulf war cost $9 billion, paid mainly by the Gulf countries).  The occupation of Iraq costs $6 billion a month, shouldered by American taxpayers who face growing economic difficulties.  In 2002 the number of unemployed rose by 1,350,000, and the number of those who were no longer covered by health insurance increased by two million.  All at a time when the rich are paying less taxes.

All these factors, combined with a rapid loss of civil liberties and democratic rights, is reflected in recent "opinion polls" showing that in the past 6 months those supporting the "war policies" have dropped from 70% to 49%.  Facing such mounting pressures makes a military blow against Syria or Iran more unlikely, but some neo- cons in the administration seem to think the policy of the "worst" gives them a freer hand to follow the path they have chosen.  Besides, ‘conveniently,’ Israel is always there to act as a proxy with full US support.

They come from caulking and adhesives, latex paint, polyurethane varnish, vinyl floor and wall coverings, floor wax, furniture polish, moth balls, air fresheners, toilet bowl deodorizers, plastics. Some of the VOCs found in indoor air are suspected of promoting cancer in humans. Concern over the safety of cleaning solutions and VOCs has created a demand for less toxic alternatives. Many of these are readily available and no more expensive than more toxic products.

8.  AVOID EXCESS MOISTURE   Moisture supports the growth of mold and mildew, which contribute to childhood allergies, respiratory infections and possibly to leukaemia. In homes where two or more people develop leukaemia, a mold called Stachybotris grows, producing a group of immune-suppressive, cancer-promoting toxins called tricothecenes. To prevent mold growth, investigate and correct any sign of moisture accumulation in your home, including seasonal condensation in basement, attic or living space, and leaks from any source. Do not carpet areas prone to dampness, like bathrooms and basements.
Remove any material that harbours fungal growth - rotten food, old wood, furnishings or building materials that have been damaged by water. Surfaces where mold regularly grows, especially shower stalls and curtains and the damp areas beneath sinks, should be cleaned weekly with a non-toxic antiseptic solution such as hydrogen peroxide diluted with an equal part of water. Maintain a relative humidity of less than 50% in each room of your home, using a dehumidifier if necessary. Relative humidity can be measured with an inexpensive meter, available in hardware stores.

Then, I read in the paper this weekend that that big turkey you were holding in Baghdad (you know, the picture that's supposed to replace the now-embarrassing footage of you on that aircraft carrier with the sign "Mission Accomplished") -- well, it turns out that big, beautiful turkey of yours was never eaten by the troops!  It wasn't eaten by anyone!  That's because it wasn't real!  It was a STUNT turkey, brought in to look like a real edible turkey for all those great camera angles.

Now I know some people will say you are into props (like the one in the lower extremities of your flyboy suit), but hey, I get it, this is theater!  So what if it was a bogus turkey?  The whole trip was bogus, all staged to look like "news."  The fake honey glaze on that bird wasn't much different from the fake honey glaze that covers this war.  And the fake stuffing in the fake bird was just the right symbol for our country during these times.  America loves fake honey glaze, it loves to be stuffed, and, dammit, YOU knew that -- that's what makes you so in touch with the people you lead!
