THE IRAQI LIBERATION PICTURE
A number of readers have expressed concerns that our front page picture on April 9^th, showing Iraqis celebrating the liberation of Iraq, had been enhanced to depict a larger crowd than actually existed.  As it was taken from TV footage, some extra people were added to the image in order to free the space left by the removal of logos from the picture.  In our opinion this did not alter the clarity of truth of the public message, but we are happy to make this clear.    EVENING STANDARD, JULY 14, p.18

FACT:  They repeated the same picture THREE times, making THREE TIMES more Iraqis!.
FACT:  They ’apologise’ 3 months after the LIE so that the several million readers have gone on believing they actually SAW IT WITH THEIR OWN EYES!
FACT:  They print their small ‘clarification’ of this FULL FRONT PAGE LIE at the bottom of page 17!!!
FACT:  They did not “alter the clarity of truth of the public message.”  The public message?  Does this sound a strange mangling of the language to you?  Clearly lawyers have been swarming all over it.  Sounds like a reference to some security memo about “the public message” which the media were to broadcast. (see Independent Press below)
FACT:  The original American TV footage has been shown to be a set-up anyway!  (see previous UP!s)
FACT:  One day soon (perhaps during Lord Hutton’s enquiry?) someone will now be able to say “Oh yes, we did publish such an enhanced foto, but it was just to fill a gap and, anyway, we published a retraction immediately”.  (Right, 3 months later on page 17!)
FACT:  The statement appears under the by-line of ‘Hugh Docherty, Home Affairs Correspondent’. Huh? What does Iraq have to do with Home Affairs?  Department of Home Security?    IS THE EDITOR COVERING HIS OWN ASS?!  OR IS HE COVERING A SHODDILY DISGUSTING CONSPIRACY INVOLVING DOWNING STREET?

HYPOCRISY: Kelly is being described as a “decent ordinary guy” who “went to church regularly,” “lived quietly” and all the rest of it.  Fine, except that this shows the English Upper Classes at their very worst.  THIS GUY OWES HIS SMART COUNTRY HOUSE AND GENTEEL LIFESTYLE TO THE FACT THAT HE INVENTED DEADLY VIRUSES FOR A FOOKIN LIVING!  How English!  My hunch is that this attitude goes back to the days of empire when, since it was accepted that pretty much everyone with serious money was making it from screwing the rest of the planet (slavery, ‘trade’ etc) NOBODY MENTIONED IT IN POLITE SOCIETY.  What a man did “for a living” was not looked at, just what he did in the local community.  You could be buggering small boys in malaysia or trashing some poor niggers’ local environment for a quick buck, but you were accepted as “a decent ordinary unassuming Englishman” if you dressed acceptably, did swear, paid your debts promptly, and kept up appearances in the neighbourhood.  Pish!

Remember the good old days when we pot smokers were the greatest threat to civilisation!  Remember the 50 Year War against youth, pleasure, spiritual seekers and psychonauts?  Remember when President Nixon called Acid Guru Timothy Leary “the most dangerous man in the world”?

Obviously the War on Terror has replaced the War on Drugs, but it’s all happened too quickly for some old tyme pot smokers who are seriously missing their daily thrill of social menace (being one, that is!), whose lives feel a bit threadbare if what they’re doing isn’t actually illegal!  Or not very, or not a high priority.   Think about it, what do you mutter and complain about if nobody’s tapping your phone?!  YOU MEAN I REALLY AM PARANOID?! 

For yes, yesterday’s Monsters are suddenly today’s, well, Trendies - with all your actual celebs openly puffing away.

A group of them have contacted the Parallel YOUniversity to make the government the following offer, which I hereby pass on.  If our leaders will give a solemn oath to give up the War on Terror and re-institute the War on Vegetables, these brave men are prepared to offer themselves up for a group arrest!  The media gets its villains, the government gets their praise, and millions of arab and non-arab people get to sleep safely in their beds again.

Sounds like a great offer to us!


THE BIGGEST SCANDAL OF THE 3^RD MILLENNIUM SO FAR
They do have one very very serious point, however.

Who or what caused the 9/11 event that has led to all this?  Alien reptiles hiding behind human holograms to rule the human race?  The Illuminati  who might be run by the space invaders?  Or did the Bush gang do it themselves  to make a scared populace demand the New World Order?  Or were a bunch of rabid xtian fundamentalists waiting for the very chance that 9/11 offered?  Or is it simple oil billionaires lusting to be trillionaires?  Or was it very very angry arabs/muslims (I come in around here) who feel totally devastated how their people have been screwed by our side since at least the Second World War and probably since the Crusades, and who can see that the remainder of their adult lives are going to be as hopeless and repressed as they’ve been up till now unless something HUGE changes? 

BUT THE MAIN, ABSOLUTELY SCANDALOUS REASON FOR THE TWIN TOWERS HOLOCAUST HAS BEEN TOTALLY IGNORED!!!   The Real Question is:  HOW DID THESE GUYS MANAGE TO GET THROUGH THE COMBINED SECURITY OPERATIONS OF THE US GOVERNMENT?! 

Were all these expensively coiffed security experts looking, perhaps, for the wrong ‘enemies’ and ‘monsters’?!!!

U GOTTIT!  The answer is absolutely clear: they were looking for US!  They were spending their waking hours (and zillions of our tax money) hunting down us poor pot smokers and the freedom fighters who supply us with the daily bread that keeps us everloving good citizens amidst the chicanery and, yes, evil all around us!


3056 PEOPLE DIED ON 9-11 THANKS TO THE WAR ON PLANTS!
On that fateful September 11^th, 1,500 FBI agents were fighting drugs, and only 1,151 were fighting terrorism!   Even more importantly, far more financial resources were dedicated to hunting drugs.  The fundamental cause and scandal was the US government’s crippling addiction to the War on Drugs!

It was ingrained in the security culture itself where counter terrorism units were sneered at for failing to deliver high-profile arrests for the evening news.  Canvassing flight schools for suspicious students was way less sexy than a big juicy drug bust with the bags or bales stacked high for the cameras and a sleepy looking blonde bimbo or two stumbling around.

Where do we lay the blame for all this mismanagement?  On generations of Puritan Fundamentalism?  Certainly, but Clinton and Blair were (finally) following the do-nothing, let it normalise itself route when, BAM, in stormed the Republicans.  In his very first interview, Attorney General John Ashcroft, now head of Homeland Security, announced "I want to escalate the war on drugs."  And you know he meant it!   Even though the rest of the world was moving the other way.

Look at it, simply because they’d agreed to ban the production of opium poppies, the Taliban was awarded $43 million when they were actually harbouring this guy bin Laden!   And when self-confessed al-Qaeda member Raed Hijazi warned FBI agents about Nabil al-Marabh (later arrested in the wake of 9-11) they only wanted to know about heroin smuggling into America from Afghanistan.


HAVE THEY LEARNED THEIR LESSON?!
Don’t count on it.  These guys are fundamentalists!  Actual reality plays very little part in their behaviour patterns.  Dinosaurs don’t learn, at best they just die out. 

After 9/11, according to high-ranking officials, FBI director Mueller planned, to shift every one of his counter-narcotics agents to counterterrorism, but was talked out of it by drug war generals who don’t know when they’re beat.

It's looking more and more like, on Sept. 11, the price of the War on Drugs may have added 3,056 lives to the millions of young lives already ruined during the years of the madness.  And there may be much more to come before they get their priorities right.

Close Encounter With Mars

All through August, Earth is catching up with Mars, an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. It will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in the night sky. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.
        Due to how Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the last 5,000 years, but it may be as long as 60,000 years.
        At a modest 75-power magnification Mars will look as large as the full moon to he naked eye.
        The planet will be easy to spot. At first Mars will rise in the east at 10 p.m. and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m.  But by the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30 a.m. That's pretty convenient when it comes to seeing something that no human has seen in recorded history.
        So, mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars grow progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month. Share this!

DOMINO?  WHAT 'BENIGN' DOMINO EFFECT?!
For those formulating American foreign policy and dreaming of remaking the Middle East in their own image, the region appears to be full of surprises. The determined resistance of some Iraqis to the Western occupation of their country seems to have been genuinely unanticipated.  It should not have been.
If the United States were conquered and occupied by Arab armies which announced their intention to stay for years and to restructure the country’s government and economy along Islamic lines, would no Americans resist, not even “hardcore Bush loyalists” or “Republican Party remnants”?

Kuwait’s legislative elections on July 5 should have constituted an even more stunning surprise.  Before and after the conquest of Iraq, proponents of the war evoked the vision of a virtuous “domino effect” toppling authoritarian regimes in the region and replacing them with modernising, Western-oriented “democratic” ones.  As a genuine reason for war, such a democratic mission always lacked credibility with those who actually live in the region, who recognise that, so long as America and Israel act like Siamese twins joined at the brain, any government in the Arab world which actually reflected the will of its people would be fervently anti-American.

Of course, Americans do like elections - provided they produce the “right” result.  Donald Rumsfeld has made clear that an Islamic government will not be permitted in Iraq, even if most of Iraq’s people were to favour one.  However, few believe that the United States would really prefer a democratically elected government which is anti-American to an authoritarian regime which is pro-American.

SO WHA’APPEN IN KUWAIT THEN?!
So, what happened in the elections in Kuwait, the most pro-American country in the Arab world, with the most reason (by far) to be pro-American?  The “liberals”, who seek a more open and modern society and had hoped to make significant gains, were almost wiped out, retaining only 3 seats (down from 8) in the 50-seat Parliament.  The remaining 47 seats went to conservatives and Islamists, including radical fundamentalists.  The “domino effect” has not worked out - at least not falling in the “right” direction - next door to Iraq.  What would genuinely fair elections produce in other Arab countries, whose people are far less pro-American?  A quiet burial for the “democratic mission” can be anticipated.

Another illusion destined to be dispelled soon is that the current “road map” for Israel/Palestine will win the United States gratitude in the Arab world.  While the “road map” is widely described as a “peace plan”, in Arab eyes, “peace” in Israel/Palestine requires ending the occupation, not crushing all resistance to it, while, in most of the world, true “peace” is recognised to require some measure of “justice”, a word rigorously avoided by successive American governments in connection with their successive “peace plans”.

ROAD MAP TO NOWHERE
If one reads the “road map”, it’s readily apparent that it builds on a false premise to reach an unbelievable conclusion.  The premise is that the problem in Israel/Palestine is Palestinian resistance to the 36-year-long occupation, not the occupation itself.  The conclusion is that, IF the Palestinian leadership will first suppress completely all forms of resistance to the occupation and eliminate all capabilities for ever resisting again, thereby making the occupation totally cost-free for Israelis, THEN (and only then) Israel will choose, of its own free will, to end the occupation, withdrawing to (essentially) its internationally recognised pre-1967 borders, vacating the settlements, sharing Jerusalem and agreeing to a just settlement of the refugee issue.

The Holy Land may, in theory, be a land of miracles, but, even if the “IF” were possible at the start of the road (which is most unlikely), it is difficult to believe that anyone in a state of sobriety could genuinely believe that the “THEN” would follow.  By contrast, if such a destination, fully consistent with international law, were announced and guaranteed at the start of the road, as it would be in any peace plan devised with a sincere intention to achieve peace, there would no longer be any need for resistance.

Arabs are not fools.  When they see both George W. Bush and Colin Powell insisting that a total cessation of Palestinian violence is not good enough and that the Palestinian leadership must also eliminate any capability  for resuming violent resistance in the future, they can recognise that the true American objective is simply “quiet” - Palestinian acquiescence in the occupation and acceptance of whatever terms Israel may wish to impose on a defeated and demoralised people - and, at worst, provoking a Palestinian civil war.

Such a “peace plan” will win America no more friends in the Arab world than American efforts to repress resistance to its own occupation of a proud Arab country by ever-escalating force, which is condemned to produce ever-intensifying resistance, which will be met by yet more brutal force in an infernal cycle which Israelis and Palestinians know all too well.

THERE IS A WAY OUT
There is a way to prevent an already ugly situation in the Middle East from degenerating into a long-term war of civilisations.  Actually, In March 2002, the Arab League, in its Beirut Declaration, dramatically offered full peace and normal diplomatic and economic relations between Israel and all Arab states in return for a total end to the occupation of all Arab lands occupied in 1967.  The Arab League should formally reaffirm this offer, while also making clear the “other side of the coin” - that there will never be peace or normal relations until the occupation ends.

Then, the United States should make clear that what must end - and soon - is the occupation, not the resistance to it.  Of course, for America to do so would require a virtual “second American declaration of independence”.  American politicians would have to put the interests of their own country and people ahead of the desires of extreme right-wing elements in Israel and their vocal, intimidating and well-funded supporters in the United States.  Most observers would consider such a revolution inconceivable, but, at least in theory, it is possible - and urgent.

The true “road map” confronting Iraq, Palestine and the region as a whole, is not one of steady progress toward peace, prosperity, Western-style democracy and increasingly pro-American sentiments.  Unless the world focuses soon on the real problem and its only real solution, and insists on the prompt implementation of that solution, we are all risking a rapid descent into hell.

The negative frameworking article was an excellent insight, Fraser, but the anti Big Bang article was pure nuts.

Sure there are problems with the current Big Bang model, but I think its basically correct.  The other explanations of Red Shift are just plain loopy.   ‘Tired Light'?   What’s it been up to then, could it not have had a rest on the way?  Lol.  A little thing called the conservation of energy and the fact that the light is doing nothing but travelling puts that idea to rest.

Of course, there have been many variations of "tired light" theories put forward to explain cosmic redshifts. The basic idea here is very reasonable. It is simply that light from extragalactic objects travels a long way through space before reaching us.  In that journey, if anything interacts with the photon or its energy decays with the passage of time, it will arrive at our telescope with a smaller energy than it started with, that is; it will be redshifted. There are many ways one could imagine this happening.  There are many difficulties with these models but the most fundamental is this: To rob a photon of some of its energy, you must jostle or perturb it at least slightly. But that means its flight path is slightly deviated. That in turn, means the image of the object becomes slightly fuzzy. But we see no evidence for unsharpness of astronomical images. In particular, high redshift objects seem as clear and sharp as low redshift objects.

Also the orthodox interpretation of red shift reveals some interesting 'mystical facts', for one the fact that 7 local galaxies (and I suspect 3 more) are blue shifted means we are part of a galactic cluster centred on our galaxy which is isomorphic with the solar system. ie one Galaxy orbited by 7 Galaxies / one Sun (or Earth, in a geocentric analysis) orbited by 7 planets (traditionally, plus 3 more now, which is more Kabbalistic!).  Just as our Sun is part of a star cluster of at least 7 major stars in orbit around Sirius.  And our super star cluster consists of at least 7 star clusters (including ours) orbiting the Orion Nebula.  I suspect this fractalisation goes right on up to the Cosmic level with super galactic cluster orbiting that mysterious centre called the 'Great Attractor'...

THE AUDIOPAD  MUSICAL PERFORMANCE BASED ON GESTURES!
A pair of MIT graduate students has developed a futuristic tool for composing live electronic music that’s unlike any traditional computer interface.
The Audiopad, developed by James Patten and Ben Recht, is a colourful, dynamic, luminescent interface projected onto a table top.  It’s reminiscent of the futuristic haptic (touch) interfaces seen in Steven Spielberg's sci-fi movie Minority Report, in which Tom Cruise uses his hands to control his computers.

"It's more expressive than a laptop interface (for creating electronic music),"  said Patten, 26.  "In terms of the style of play it encourages, it's easier to improvise a more expressive style of play. Because it's physical, there's also a dynamic that engages the audience. They can actually see what the performer is doing."

The Audiopad is projected on a special table equipped with radio sensors that track the position and movement of half a dozen plastic discs, or "pucks."   Most of the pucks control a series of preprogrammed tracks - the rhythm, the bass line, the melody and so on.
There's a large circular puck that changes the volume of each track when moved closer or further away, allowing different tracks to be emphasised at different times.
Another puck - a star-shaped "action" puck - allows the musician to alter the basic preprogrammed tracks in various ways.  If the action puck is moved toward one of the track pucks, a choice of different actions is projected next to the target puck.  The actions "spring up" on the table top, and each is selected by moving the action puck over it.

The controls are projected onto the table by a video projector mounted on the ceiling or on the table itself using a mirror.  A PC running Linux controls the whole thing.


A NATURAL FOR RAVERS
It sounds complicated, but at the Audiopad's first major public demonstration at the Sónar festival in Barcelona, Spain, last month, clubbers were able to figure out the controls almost immediately.
"It surprised me, frankly," said Patten. "It's at the stage where someone can just walk up and use it."

The Audiopad is based on Patten's earlier Sensetable, a table-top computer interface designed to help solve spatial problems like business simulation, network and transportation planning, and chip design.  "Any sort of problem where there's a spatial component," Patten said.

Patten says he'd like to see the Audiopad turned into a product, but he has no active plans to do so at the moment.  He says the closest thing on the market is the Korg Kaoss Pd, a finger-controlled musical effects processor.

"It's very important to move people away from desks, monitors, keyboards and mice," said Lonny Chua, graduate student at Stanford University who is working on haptic musical interfaces.   “The Audiopad is a movement in the right direction.  So much musical performance is based on gestures.  Something like the Audiopad allows people to make freer, more natural gestures than when theyre constrained to their desk.  That's good where music is concerned."

Web spawns Grid and All will Change
Last week scientists in Geneva threw the switch on the biggest development in global communication since Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the internet, scrawled "www" on a blackboard in 1989.
10 laboratories around the world can now talk to each other through their computers.

Doesn’t sound revolutionary in an age of high-speed digital communication?  But this small step for computerkind marks the launch of a new technological concept - the next generation of the web.  It’s called the Grid, and scientists say that before long it will change everything we do.

The internet now consists of huge servers that contain in for on web pages that’s then downloaded on to computers.  As a user, the memory or processing power of your computer limits what you can do with that information.

Under the Grid, the power of your machine - all those gigabytes, RAM and gigahertz - will become irrelevant.  No matter how primitive your computer, you’ll have access to more power than now exists in the Pentagon!

"You just say I want this information and the Grid goes out and collects that for you," said Roger Cashmore, director of research at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory, near Geneva.

The Grid’s backbone is computer centres filled with thousands of PCs linked together.   Users will be able to use the programs, processing power or the storage they need as if it all existed on their own computer.  And it‘s seamless - you could be tapping into a handheld computer on a train in England, using an application on a computer in the United States, and storing files in Thailand and still have unlimited computer power.

Ok, it will be a while before the Grid impacts on everyday lives.  Like the web, it’s being developed to help scientific research into particle physics at CERN.  Like the electrical grid, which gives the system its name, the computing power will become available on demand.  But it’s about more than particle physics.

The handheld computer, connected by mobile phone to the internet, would become a supercomputer.  Movies could be edited and watched on it.  It could access a word processor stored on a computer somewhere in cyberspace.

It took 8 years for the internet to catch on, said Bob Jones, a Grid project manager who was at CERN when the web was invented.  This time, governments and scientists are already on board, so the results will be seen a lot sooner. "It'll be like the web,"  he said. "When you have it you'll wonder how you ever got by without it."

MICROWAVE HEATING IS POISONOUS
On Channel 2, Dr. Edward Fujimoto from Castle Hospital, manager of the Wellness Program at the hospital, was talking about dioxins, and how bad they are for us.
He said we should not be heating any foods that contain fat in the microwave using plastic containers.  The combination of fat, high heat and plastics, releases dioxins into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body.

Dioxins are carcinogens (cancer causing agents), and highly toxic to the cells of our bodies.  Instead, he recommends using glass or ceramic  containers for heating food.  You get the same results without the dioxins.

So such things as TV dinners, instant meals, and soups, etc. should be removed from the container, and heated in something else.  Paper isn't bad, but you don't know what is in the paper.  It’s just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, Pyrex etc.

He said we might remember when some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.

Also. plastic wrap, placed over foods as they are nuked, actually drips poisonous toxins into the food.  Instead, use a paper towel.

today, august 6, is actually the 13th anniversary of the imposition of economic sanctions on Iraq.  for 12½ years these sanctions devastated Iraq’s infrastructure and economy 'contributing to pervasive life-threatening public health conditions for millions of innocent people' (Human Rights Watch, August 2000) - a policy which CAFOD condemned as 'humanly catastrophic and morally indefensible' (CAFOD, February 2001). Few in this country could dispute the integrity of this great nation during the Cold War. Still today many hold this vision to remain true and that is why so many here support the illegal war in Iraq. How could the U.S. do ANYTHING wrong? But the cracks are beginning to form on the LEFT and the RIGHT and more and more Americans are seeing this government for what it really is: DECEPTIVE in the information it spoon feeds to the people. Maybethis CULTURE OF DECEPTION started right after WW II with the captured propaganda Nazis who told our officials how easily manipulated and malleable public perceptions could be and the U.S. Gov took a new posture from there. A good illustration is the misguided Energy Policy based on fossil fuels, or the Roswell cover up in 1947. Certainly the worldwide UFO phenomena has been suppressed and denied by U.S. Gov officials for the last five decades, but these specific officials are accountable to no one, as the "compartmental" offices established by Harry Truman were set into place and have only gotten more entrenched over time.
