UNDER PRESSURE FROM BUSH AND HIS US CORPORATE MENTORS, THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT HAS BEEN TRYING TO SNEAK THROUGH APPROVAL OF GM CROPS
THE GM DEBATE IN THE UK HAS NOT RECEIVED VERY MUCH PUBLICITY FOR SUCH A FAR-REACHING AND CRUCIAL ISSUE.

WE CHANGE ALL THAT.  IF U DO NOTHING ELSE TODAY SEND THIS ON!

THE CASE AGAINST
GM CROPS
     EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Professor of Genetics Mae Wan Ho at the Open University
(She is not funded by industry, has been free to say what she really thinks, and has been campaigning about it for about ten years.)

Why GM-Free?

1.  GM crops failed to deliver promised benefits
The consistent finding from independent research and on-farm surveys since 1999 is that GM crops have failed to deliver the promised benefits of significantly increasing yields or reducing herbicide and pesticide use.

GM crops have cost the United States an estimated $12 billion in farm subsidies, lost sales and product recalls due to transgenic contamination.  Massive failures in Bt cotton of up to 100% were reported in India.  Biotech corporations have suffered rapid decline since 2000, and investment advisors forecast no future for the agricultural sector.  Meanwhile worldwide resistance to GM reached a climax in 2002 when Zambia refused GM maize in food aid despite the threat of famine.

2.  GM crops pose escalating problems on farms
The instability of transgenic lines has plagued the industry from the beginning, and this may be responsible for a string of major crop failures.  A review in 1994 stated, "While there are some examples of plants which show stable expression of a transgene, these may prove to be the exceptions to the rule.”

In an informal survey of over 30 companies involved in the commercialisation of transgenic crop plants, almost all of the respondents indicated that they had observed some level of transgene inaction.
Many respondents indicated that most cases of transgene inactivation never reach the literature
Triple herbicide-tolerant oilseed rape volunteers that have combined transgenic and non-transgenic traits are now widespread in Canada.  Similar multiple herbicide-tolerant volunteers and weeds have emerged in the United States.  In the United States, glyphosate-tolerant weeds are plaguing GM cotton and soya fields, and atrazine, one of the most toxic herbicides, has had to be used with glufosinate-tolerant GM maize.
Bt biopesticide traits are simultaneously threatening to create superweeds and Bt- resistant pests.

3.  Extensive transgenic contamination unavoidable
Extensive transgenic contamination has occurred in maize landraces growing in remote regions in Mexico despite an official moratorium that has been in place since 1998.
High levels of contamination have since been found in
CanadaIn a test of 33 certified seed stocks, 32 were found contaminated.  New research shows that transgenic pollen, wind-blown and deposited elsewhere, or falling directly to the ground, is a major source of transgenic contamination.
Contamination is generally acknowledged to be unavoidable, hence there can be no co-existence of transgenic and non-transgenic crops.

4.  GM crops not safe
Contrary to the claims of proponents, GM crops have not been proven safe.  The regulatory framework was fatally flawed from the start.  It was based on an anti-precautionary approach designed to expedite product approval at the expense of safety considerations.  The principle of "substantial equivalence", on which risk assessment is based, is intended to be vague and ill-defined, thereby giving companies complete licence in claiming transgenic products "substantially equivalent" to non-transgenic products, and hence "safe".

5.  GM food raises serious safety concerns
There have been very few credible studies on GM food safety.  Nevertheless, the available findings already give cause for concern.  In the still only systematic investigation on GM food ever carried out in the world, "growth factor-like" effects were found in the stomach and small intestine of young rats that were not fully accounted for by the transgene product, and were hence attributable to the transgenic process or the transgenic construct, and may hence be general to all GM food.
There have been at least two other, more limited, studies that also raised serious safety concerns.

6.  Dangerous gene products are incorporated into crops
Bt proteins, incorporated into 25% of all transgenic crops worldwide, have been found harmful to a range of non-target insects.  Some of them are also potent immunogens and allergens.
A team of scientists have cautioned against releasing Bt crops for human use.  Food crops are increasingly used to produce pharmaceuticals and drugs, including
cytokines, known to suppress the immune system, induce sickness and central nervous system toxicity; interferon alpha, reported to cause dementia, neurotoxicity and mood and cognitive side effects; vaccines; and viral sequences such as the "spike"’ protein gene of the pig coronavirus, in the same family as the SARS virus linked to the current epidemic.
The glycoprotein gene gp120 of the AIDS virus HIV-1, incorporated into GM maize as a "
cheap, edible oral vaccine", serves as yet another biological time-bomb, as it can interfere with the immune system and recombine with viruses and bacteria to generate new and unpredictable pathogens.

7.  Terminator crops spread male sterility
Crops engineered with "suicide" genes for male sterility have been promoted as a means of "containing", i.e., preventing, the spread of transgenes.  In reality, the hybrid crops sold to farmers spread both male sterile suicide genes as well as herbicide tolerance genes via pollen.

8. Broad-spectrum herbicides are highly toxic to humans and other species
Glufosinate ammonium and glyphosate are used with the herbicide-tolerant transgenic crops that currently account for 75% of all transgenic crops worldwide.  Both are systemic metabolic poisons expected to have a wide range of harmful effects, and these have been confirmed.  Glufosinate ammonium is linked to neurological, respiratory, gastrointestinal and haematological toxicities, and birth defects in humans and mammals.
It is
toxic to butterflies and a number of beneficial insects, also to the larvae of clams and oysters, Daphnia and some freshwater fish, especially the rainbow trout.  It inhibits beneficial soil bacteria and fungi, especially those that fix nitrogen.

Glyphosate is the most frequent cause of complaints and poisoning in the UK.  Disturbances of many body functions have been reported after exposures at normal use levels.  Glyphosate exposure nearly doubled the risk of late spontaneous
abortion, and children born to users of glyphosate had elevated neurobehavioral defects.  Glyphosate caused retarded development of the foetal skeleton in laboratory rats.  Roundup caused cell division dysfunction that may be linked to human cancers.
Glyphosate inhibits the synthesis of steroids, and is
genotoxic in mammals, fish and frogs.  Field dose exposure of earthworms caused at least 50% mortality and significant intestinal damage among surviving worms.  The known effects of both glufosinate and glyphosate are sufficiently serious for all further uses of the herbicides to be halted.

9. Genetic engineering creates super-viruses
By far the most insidious dangers of genetic engineering are inherent to the process itself, which greatly enhances the scope and probability of horizontal gene transfer and recombination, the main route to creating viruses and bacteria that cause disease epidemics.  This was highlighted, in 2001, by the "accidental" creation of a killer mouse virus in the course of an apparently innocent genetic engineering experiment.
Newer techniques, such as
DNA shuffling are allowing geneticists to create in a matter of minutes in the laboratory millions of recombinant viruses that have never existed in billions of years of evolution.  Disease-causing viruses and bacteria and their genetic material are the predominant materials and tools for genetic engineering, as much as for the intentional creation of bio-weapons.

10. Transgenic DNA in food is taken up by bacteria in human gut
There is already experimental evidence that transgenic DNA from plants has been taken up by bacteria in the soil and in the gut of human volunteers.  Antibiotic resistance marker genes can spread from transgenic food to pathogenic bacteria, making infections very difficult to treat.

11. Transgenic DNA and cancer
Transgenic DNA is known to survive digestion in the gut and to jump into the genome of mammalian cells, raising the possibility for triggering cancer.
The possibility cannot be excluded that feeding GM products such as maize to animals also carries risks, not just for the animals but also for human beings consuming the animal products.

12. CaMV 35S promoter increases horizontal gene transfer
Evidence suggests that transgenic constructs with the CaMV 35S promoter might be especially unstable and prone to horizontal gene transfer and recombination, with all the attendant hazards: gene mutations due to random insertion, cancer, reactivation of dormant viruses and generation of new viruses.  This promoter is present in most GM crops being grown commercially today.

13. There’s been a history of misrepresentation and suppression of scientific evidence
There has been a history of misrepresentation and suppression of scientific evidence, especially on horizontal gene transfer.  Key experiments failed to be performed, or were performed badly and then misrepresented.  Many experiments were not followed up, including investigations on whether the CaMV 35S promoter is responsible for the "growth-factor-like" effects observed in young rats fed GM potatoes.

14. IN CONCLUSION, CO-EXISTENCE OF GM & NON-GM AGRICULTURE IS NOT AN OPTION

1.  GM crops have failed to deliver the promised benefits and are posing escalating problems on the farm.
2.  Transgenic contamination is now widely acknowledged to be unavoidable, and hence there can be no co-existence of GM and non-GM agriculture.
3.  Most important of all, GM crops have not been proven safe.  On the contrary, sufficient evidence has emerged to raise serious safety concerns which, if ignored, could result in irreversible damage to health and the environment. .

//YOU FEEDBACK:  NEO TANTRICISM

Yo Fraser.
It's very easy to see marriage as a fairly thoughtless automatic social response.

>> possibly in the last few years it has but, for nearly all my adult life, it’s been very difficult to stand against marriage, so please forgive me if i still feel the need to assert loudly that, just because i’m not aiming at marriage, i must be aiming at shallow meaninglessness :)  i’ll cop to it being left-over church paranoia and try not to knock marriage but you watch, much of the criticism i attract will be based, in one form or the other, on the marriage dictum.

For most of my life I viewed it as a ridiculous xtian/ family values/ capitalist contract which, in reality, meant nothing if a couple were truly in love.  But as I've got older, and watched some of my greatest, most lucid and questioning friends "tie the knot", I've come to view it differently.

Everyone I know would like to find "
The One".
>> we don’t know each other then?

But "The One" doesn't simply exist.  The raw materials for the best possible relationship may be present in any number of potential partners, but it isn't until the relationship actually starts that it becomes possible to forge a beautiful, harmonic Gem.  And that, of course, means work.
There is no such thing as perfection.
All gems are flawed.
>> but which one to “choose” and why, and can we really only polish one gem atta time?

Upon recognition that one has discovered the best possible gem.
That one has finally found the basis for peace, love and understanding.
(
Home, as I like to call it.)
Then, marriage is, simply, a public declaration of a couple’s dedication to each other.
>> dedication?  we’ll need to define that, i got no problem with any 2 people deciding to share their practical lives together but i) all sorts of combos might decide to do that and ii) if it IS ‘Love’, then how exackly do we define ‘dedication’, erotically i mean?

It's a celebration of love in which lovers say to everyone they know "come and have a party with us, for us, to bring us even closer together."
>> am not consciously being cynical, but it’s my judgement that, even during those very celebrations, each of the partners fancies some Other being there and, by repressing that urge (for a Higher Cause as they assure themselves) the seeds are already present in that relationship which, no matter how many years this ‘Falling Away’ (from Conscious Truth) takes, will grow & smother it.

I can't think of a society, off the top of my head, where "marriage" doesn't occur.  It's not just a xtian construct.  All of the great weddings I've attended have been fantastically creative ceremonies without even a hint of xtian or legal bullshit.

I know that, when I meet the one, we will marry!
peter / tokyo.
>> heh heh.  invite me to the marriage, i’ve been to some great ones myself, but have no reason to change my opinion.

I think the Love topic is not just strong, it’s where we really need to put our focus.  Casual loving nurtures us battered and damaged souls.  This can serve to enable deep pair bonding further along, which begins to show us the true deep colours of love.

And a core element of the glorious ‘60s.

Subject:
we want MORE than mere marriage!
Date: Fri, 4 Jul 2003 13:11:52 +0100

Fraser,
This morning i read the latest
UP!  Please forgive me if i have come to any incorrect conclusions about your words, as i have not yet caught up on the last two.

By coincidence, i proposed to my girlfriend last night, so your piece
'we want MORE than mere marriage!' really got me thinking!

It was a beautiful summer evening and we were atop Arthur’s Seat watching the sunset [that’s the extinct volcano in the middle of Edinburgh, a place of great beauty where i feel a spiritual connection to the world, both man-made and
natural.  It's almost a physical example of spirit in some ways.  Being there is to be in the heart of nature, and yet one is surrounded on all sides by a city: the self in society.]

Your article, therefore, was, ah, timely, pushing me as it did to examine why i’d proposed and what i wanted from it.
Let me make a few counter arguments (in no particular order) and see what happens.

I agree that 'no contract, written or verbal, can guarantee anything (other than mere money) in affairs of the heart (and mind and moving centre).' I am not foolish enough to believe that a piece of paper can guaranteea heart's desire.  However, I do see it as a solid foundation on which to continue to build our relationship. To go, as you say, deeper
Of course, our love is a foundation itself but we are products of our society.  No matter how hard we battle those pre-learned ideas, we all have some we find hard to shift.  This is mine.
Okay, this is one of mine.  But i am working on them.

MONEY IS AN ISSUE HERE
No contract’s a guarantee, and marriage is no exception.  However,
money is an issue here.  What i’ve written below was in terms of 'half of what is mine is yours' and 'in the event of my untimely death' and not in terms of ‘gettit and “keepit” divorce settlements.  (I’ve made this arbitrary spilt for good reasons and, i guess, personal ones, but that’s another argument.  Not private, just for another time.)

I don't really like
money and what it represents and ties us to, but i don't think i’m personally in a position to ignore its influence.  Whilst most people may by swimming in the money tide (not necessarily meaning rich, merely steeped in its world and its 'importance'), i like to consider myself in a lifeboat atop the raging waters: not exactly immersed in it.  However, my small craft, constructed of beliefs, is still susceptible to it's swells and dips.

My point is that a contract guaranteeing something for the person i love most in the world is
important.  Because no matter how unjust the rules of the society we live in, we can’t afford to ignore it entirely.  I have job(s), (albeit a few free-lance) and my girlfriend has a job. These and many more things bind us to society.  I want to be sure that, from within this society, my girlfriend and I are seen as a 'we' and not a 'you and you'.   Being married can smooth the way somewhat for a couple within society.  Being that it’s society's recognised couple status can mean that we have less societal hassle, so we can be happier and concentrate more on ourselves and our development.
>> but the hassle is close to minimal and dying daily, that was one of my main points  it’s our ‘fears’ that control us even though the jailers are gone.

No matter how unpleasant or just plain wrong society appears to us, we are part of it.  There’s no way to be outwith society.  No experiments to try and leave society have ever fully worked.
>> actually i think it happens all the time and society comes plodding along later, and then creates a new ‘normal’.   it’s called evolution :)

You stated 'my own memory of my 3 decades of Free Loving Hippydom is one of recurring disappointment/ bad feeling...'  Can i use this as a small proof of my argument?  No matter how good the intention, i believe these experiments are doomed to failure or, perhaps worse still, assimilation in that which they are trying to break from.
>> thereby evolving that institution, that’s what i meant about evolution,
however, r u saying that marriage experiments have proven more successful?

DOES HIPPY MEAN ANYTHING NOW?
Isn't being a
hippy now just another brand?  I could, for example, go out today dressed as a hippy, eat in mcdonalds, smoke lots, get drunk, start a fight.  This un-hippiness dilutes the very idea of being a hippy, helping render it meaningless.  It may not change what’s in your head if you really are a hippy but it dilutes the concept.  Therefore, it’s only what’s in your head, and therefore your individual actions that count.  And, since there’s no way to leave society, i believe very strongly that we can, no, must change society from within.

I WANT TO GET MARRIED AND YET CONTINUE TO
LEAD THE LIFE I LIVE
So, to get back to where we started: marriage.  There isn’t much more of a kow-tow to society than marriage.  I want to get married and yet continue to lead the life i live with the values i have (and that my girlfriend and i share).
>> then i have to ask: which of your previous values r u prepared to abandon?  if none (which i am advocating) then what’s marriage, other than a public avowal?

I want to prove to those around us that we can make marriage ours.  I want to make this contract work for us.  Did you purchase the computer you work on without a guarantee?
>> actually yes :)

Isn't a partner more important than a computer?  Perhaps everything that’s not inside my head is society and should be treated as such.

Essentially, i don't disagree with anything you’ve written.  However, your observations seem to me to be based on how marriage exists now and that it’s not changeable or, perhaps, worth changing.  Right now marriage is worth little more than a computer guarantee.  This is wrong.
>> we’re not disagreeing, we’re exploring, trying to think thru concepts which are bandied about in love songs, psalms, tv commercials, biblical scholars, xmas cards, movies written by people for mere money, and all the rest of society’s schizoid mishmash is all :)

to cut to the quick: i do see a sort of non church/state marriage of the future in which one or two or up to a dozen or so learn to live and share together in a fairly long-term sense all the experiences they continue to have outside that relationship.  that’s looking at ‘marriage’ as it will evolve in this millennium.

Lastly, you said 'a potential that never manifested'.  Let's see if we find that potential.  I want more than mere marriage.

Oh, and another thing, one that may seem facile, but is important.  Getting married would make our parents very happy.  Whilst not a reason in itself, bringing joy to people is too important to overlook.  Sure, they’re less free-thinking than us and are therefore more of a fitting part of society and this marriage will bring them joy.  And their joy will give us joy.
>> hmm.

These are rambling thoughts.  I’m not sure they form any cohesive argument or not, but i needed to think this through ‘on paper’ and your opinion is always eye-opening and something i value.

love

i drink not much, smoke not at all, spend with thought, laugh at any chance i get, cycle, hardly get angry, stay up too late much less, get up less tired, read all the time, barely watch TV, and meditate too seldom. well, i'm almost there. It's always good to know where one needs to work on oneself.
>> always a pleasure conversing with an open enquiring mind :)

political sex?
there’s no neotantric diary this week.  have just been too bizzy, including actually updating the diary itself.

i did stumble across Kate Millett’s
Sexual Politics, seemingly by accident.  this was a huge feminist seller in the ‘60s and i thought:  wow, this is meant for me!  this is exactly the connection between the two that i was seeking!

it wasn’t.  or, rather, it’s no longer relevant.  or, rather, it showed how quickly things have changed (and are changing).
basically she’s saying that we live in a
patriarchy which runs everything and this extends right down to (and up from) the bed.

well, few women would recognise that,  it’s been swept away by the tide of history, the one that’s still sweeping us along.  which did make me realise that the “free” world has totally transformed on the personal level (as i’ve been writing about!) BUT THE OLD HARD CRUST ATOP THE CULTURE CONTINUES IRRESPECTIVE!

well, we ‘60s folk always said that the change won’t come from the top down (that would be more patriarchy), it had to come from the bottom up.  and it’s there, it’s coming!
but where does it go next?  when and how exactly (or a little more exactly) does it engage with and begin to change the upper crust?

there’s the future!   a twin parallel evolution where the upper crust begins to dissolve (as is already apparent) and, to repeat my refrain of the past 3 weeks, our internalised ‘moral’ blocks, the internalised ghosts of old tabus, simultaneously evolve, and a new world is glimpsed....  i had a thrilling experience this week when i glimpsed that it really is possible to feel no jealousy or possessiveness, i more than glimpsed it, i experienced it, and it was, for the first time, beyond mental concepts, there was no contradiction anywhere within me.  freedom from possessiveness is a realisable potential!  perhaps i’ll include some of it next week, it’s a steamy story where, by losing on the deepest most embarrassing level i WON a new perspective that can serve me for the rest of my life!!

how the zillions personal changes in the atoms filter up and change the overground culture are very old chestnuts from the ‘60s.  the children of the tecno elite affect their parents’ picture of the world, for example, that’s why i embraced rave culture the moment it self-combusted.

to conclude for now, i remember writing on this subject in the early ‘70s that
“maybe that blowjob mrs nixon gave dick because she’d read about it in Home Journal released enuff of his pent-up macho tensions that he didn’t press the button the next day as he might have.”

BUSHIES STOLE MY CON!
Patented 3rd-Party Ruse Used Witless Brits

Back in February, when I began cataloguing the “Techniques Of Deceit the Bush administration was employing to sell the public on the need to attack Iraq, it never occurred to me they would one day stoop as low as stealing one of my own ‘fibbing for fun’ techniques!!

But with each new vehement British denial of seeing or using the forged Iraq-Niger correspondence as the basis for its claim about Iraq’s nuclear ambitions in the First “Dossier” (Sept 24) the more convinced I become that the Bushies masterfully executed my patented “Hidden-Hand 3rd-Party Verification” pick-up con, using the unwitting Brits to con the U.S. media, public and Congress.

From this con artist’s perspective, while it’s certainly possible the Brits were the Bushies’ “witting” accomplices, it looks more like the Bushies used Tony Blair / British intelligence as clueless pawns to dupe America.  Not  by what they told them, but by what they didn’t tell them:
They didn’t tell the Brits that 2 separate investigations - first by U.S. ambassador to Niger Barbro Owens-Kirkpatrick before February 2002, then by retired diplomat Joe Wilson in February 2002  had determined beyond any doubt that there was no arrangement between Niger and Iraq for the sale of uranium oxide. (See Wilson’s essay in the July 6 New York Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2003/07/06/opinion/06WILS.html).

Neither Owens-Kirkpatrick nor Wilson actually saw the forgeries, but their extensive interviews with the alleged Niger-government participants made it crystal clear the allegations were groundless.  Both reported their findings to Washington.  (The letters and memorandum were exposed as forgeries on March 7, 2003, by the U.N.’s International Atomic Energy Agency.)  But from where did the forgeries and allegations spring?

According to a story in the March 22 Washington Post by three of its better reporters, a “U.N. official” asserted that “a Niger diplomat turned the letters over to Italian intelligence, which provided summaries of the information to Washington and London.”
Apparently the Italians acquired the letters in the latter half of 2001, and at some point after that they passed along the summaries.

The key point is that the Italians handed over “summaries,” not the documents themselves.  This meant the Bushies knew everything the Brits knew - and would soon know considerably more.  The Bushies could then judge those “summaries” with the advantage of knowing that two seasoned pros had thoroughly debunked the actual allegations.

The Brits, on the other hand, would assess those summaries having never seen the actual documents and knowing only that the summaries had been provided by their trusted Italian allies to themselves and the Bushies.
Any misgivings the Brits might have had about the summaries would have evaporated as the months rolled by with no hint from their dear American friends that they were based on a hoax.  We may also surmise that the summaries were deliberately vague on the identity of Iraq’s supposed supplier, referring to “Africa” rather than specifying Niger.

All of those factors explain why
1.  the hapless Brits found the story credible
2   their September 24 “dossier” referred to uranium from “Africa” rather than “Niger”
3   they valiantly maintain that the IAEA’s March 7 debunking didn’t invalidate their dossier because the IAEA shot down
a strictly Niger connection, rather than a broader “African” connection.  After all, 3 other African nations besides Niger have uranium oxide.

So why haven’t the Brits provided the IAEA with a single piece of evidence implicating Iraq with one of these other nations - evidence the IAEA has been begging for since September?  Because the well-suckered Brits don’t have any.  A U.N. official told the Post that neither the British or U.S. government “
ever indicated that they had any information on any other country.

QUESTION:   Did the CIA ask their Italian counterparts to make the summaries more credible than the documents they were based on, and to substitute “Africa” for “Niger,” so as to give the allegation a longer life by expanding to four the list of suspect nations that had to be ruled out?

QUESTION:   What role did the CIA and/or Italian intelligence play in the production or commissioning of the forgeries, either directly or through intermediaries?

QUESTION:   What role did British intelligence play in this?

While the Brits do appear to be the patsy in the present case, Seymour Hersh reported in March that “Forged documents and false accusations have been an element in U.S. and British policy toward Iraq at least since the fall of 1997, after an impasse over U.N. inspections.”

PASSIVE LYING” FOR PROFIT AND SELF-ESTEEM
By keeping the Brits barefoot and clueless, the Bushies made it possible for the Brits to make and presumably believe this assertion in its September 24 dossier:
There is intelligence that Iraq has sought the supply of significant quantities of uranium from Africa.  Iraq has no active civil nuclear power programme or nuclear power plants, and therefore has no legitimate reason to acquire uranium.”

One can’t get more vague than “there is intelligence,” but because the phrase appeared in an MI5 report released - with great fanfare - by Tony Blair, much of the Yankee media, public and Congress assumed the Brits had the Iraqis cold.

And the Bushies were even able to make extra hay by citing the trusty Brits as they trumpeted the allegation in closed-door congressional testimony, a State Department “
Fact Sheet” and a number of public speeches including the State of the Union address.

But here’s the best part:  Since the Bushies didn’t have to ask the Brits to LIE, but instead cleverly arranged for them to make a false claim they believed to be true, the Bushies can pretend their integrity’s intact!

That element of the con is something I call “
Passive Lying”:  you know what your friend’s saying is false, but because the lie’s so darn useful you allow the lie to lodge in people’s brains as fact.

Ever since the IAEA exposed the Niger Connection as a hoax, Bushies have adopted the Brit position of claiming to have unforged evidence proving that Iraq sought uranium from “Africa” - if not Niger, then from one of the other 3 uranium-producing countries.  And what evidence might that be?  Here’s an excerpt from a June 10 letter from Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) to National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice:

Contrary to your assertion, there does not appear to be any other specific and credible evidence that Iraq sought to obtain uranium from an African country.  The Administration has not provided any such evidence to me or my staff despite our repeated requests.  To the contrary, the State Department wrote me that the ‘other source’ of this claim was another Western European ally.  But as the State Department acknowledged in its letter, ‘the second Western European government had based its assessment on the evidence already available to the U.S. that was subsequently discredited.
( http://alternet.org/story.html?StoryID=16155):

Back to Square One!  The good old “summaries” from Italy, we may presume.   Or perhaps they’re summaries of the summaries, provided by another ally?

Let’s tip our hat to the Bushies for pulling off not one but possibly two splendid “
Hidden-Hand 3rd-Party Verification” cons:  they seem to have used Italian intelligence agents, highly skilled in the art of producing misleading summaries, as a credible 3rd party to con the Brits, and they definitely used the Brits as a credible 3rd party to con America!!

“HIDDEN-HAND 3RD-PARTY VERIFICATION
Having perfected the “Hidden-Hand 3rd-Party Verification technique many years ago when my objective was to persuade potential sweethearts that I was 5 years younger than my actual age, it was simplicity itself for to me to dissect the Niger Connection con.

In the mid-1990s, I was beginning to wonder if I’d ever find Ms. Right.  I knew I could pass for younger, and I thought I could enhance my prospects with bright, charming ladies in my preferred demographic if they thought I was X minus 5 rather than X.   So from that point forward I started telling people at my new job, as well as friends who didn’t know the truth, my new age.  I wouldn’t just blurt it out, but it’s easy enough for a sly fellow like myself to work it into casual conversation.  Before long, word on the street was I was X  5!

An interested woman might make covert inquiries of my friends or co-workers to find out more about the handsome, witty fellow with the deadpan humour and twinkle in his eye.   Heck, she might even inquire about me!   And if she did, she’d discover from her trusted 3rd-party sources, that I was X - 5.   So I was able to maintain a positive self-image because I hadn’t asked anyone to lie on my behalf, I’d merely used them to innocently forward a piece of info they considered accurate.

It worked!   I’m happy to report that Julie and I will celebrate our 6th anniversary August 22, and that she will learn my true age when she reads this article.

Actually, that’s a lie, too.  There was no marriage and no Julie, which points to the risk in the ruse: the upshot when the truth comes out.

Turns out most women aren’t keen on liars.   They figure, “
If he’ll lie about his age, what else would he lie about?  What if he really didn’t score 55 points against Michael Jordan in college?

THE “UNDROPPED SHOE” TECHNIQUE
There’s anther technique of deceit Bush stole from me, a variation on the broad category of “fact-based lies” I call the “Undropped Shoe”: saying things that are technically or conceivably true, but withholding the context or key fact that would reveal the speaker’s intent to plant a preposterously false picture in the listener’s mind
The president’s pre-war speeches were saturated with
Undropped Shoes:

·  If we don’t watch out, Saddam could soon turn America into a mushroom cloud (by firing a nuclear bomb he’ll never develop with a long-range missile he’ll never have - wink).

·  Iraq’s unmanned aerial vehicles threaten us (if the Iraqi Love Boat transports them - undetected - to our shore line - wink).

·  Saddam and Osama are joined at the hip in an alliance of evil (assuming every honest intelligence expert in the world is wrong and all those discredited defectors are right  wink, wink).

Fortunately for Bush, America’s leading commentators are much keener on liars than the women who learned the ugly numerical truth about me.

Which brings us back to the most important matter of all: I’m 42.   But don’t take my word for it.  It says so right here, in black and white, on my official Government of Niger birth certificate.

'RAPED' MASSAI WOMEN WIN LEGAL AID
Hundreds of Kenyan tribeswomen who say that, between 1983 and last year, they were raped as a matter of routine by UK soldiers on exercise in Kenya, have been granted British legal aid to sue the Ministry of Defence.
Despite the stigma of admitting being a rape victim in rural Kenya, 650 women, most of them from the Massai ethnic group, allege that many soldiers hunted in packs and many victims were gang raped.  About 100 have documentary evidence such as police or clinic reports.
40 have mixed-race children they say were born as a result of the rapes.
The British Army has a training base in the region, near
Mount Kenya.

MOD DIDN’T EXERCISE PROPER CONTROL, CLAIMS LAWYER
On many occasions this information was passed on to the British officers and yet absolutely nothing seems to have been done, according to Martin Day, the women's lawyer.  Despite repeated complaints by Kenyan officials and tribal leaders, he said, British officers had turned a blind eye.
He told BBC Radio 4's
Today programme contemporaneous documentary evidence showed the women had been complaining of the rapes over a 30-year period
While admitting that some of the 650 women involved in the claim may be "
jumping on the bandwagon" in hope of gaining compensation, he said the stigma attached to an admission of rape was very high.  "One women was thrown out of her house after telling her husband that she had been raped".

The granting of legal aid means that legal action will now proceed.

This is not the first time the
MoD has been taken to court by Mr Day.  You may recall hearing about his firm winning a £4.5m (7.5m) settlement for Masai people killed and injured by mines left on their land by the British Army.

THE KUWAIT KONSPIRACY
WHY THE IRAQ WAR REALLY HAPPENED
Popbitch
recently met a mysterious man claiming to be a senior Kuwaiti politician.  He was accompanied by two lesbian Russian hookers and, after a few drinks, told us the real story of the Middle East.

1. The Kuwaiti government paid
$20 billion to the USA to "take out" Saddam Hussein.  (it pays for Bush's tax cuts and could help him get re-elected.)  The Iraq war was therefore the most expensive hired hit in history.

2. Saddam and his sons were killed on
Day 9.

3. Al Qaeda had no involvement in Iraq - the Kuwaiti has met with Osama Bin Laden since the war and reports that Osama is delighted that Saddam's been dispensed with.

4. The good news is
Iran and Syria are safe.  No-one wants to pay Bush to attack them.  Yet.

BUSH IS ALREADY HISTORY
Powers above the White House are deciding that it's time for the Bush gang to go.  As a Watergate-style take down is being meticulously put into place, the question is not whether the Bush Administration will be removed before or after the 2004 election.  The important questions are whether Bush's successor will address 9/11, Peak Oil, civil liberties, or any of the critical issues.  What is being done even now to control the challengers in the Presidential election?  A clandestine drama is unfolding.
The coup against Bush is being set-up as a form of damage control.  The press campaign is building to a climax that may break even after Bush has won (bought or stolen) re-election.  The
CIA is hanging Bush out to dry.
The coup is necessary for
Wall Street and the power brokers.  Bush's options in Iraq and everywhere else are being closed off by American power brokers.
Don't get your hopes up.  The one chance for real change is to use the energy of the coup to drag the secrets of 9/11 out into the open.

FEMINISTS FOR KUCINICH
Rather than waiting to hear what all the Democratic candidates had to say, then jumping on the bandwagon of the least offensive, 8 prominent feminists decided to make their own list of priorities and see who agreed with them.

Dennis Kucinich was the only candidate who not only agreed with all their points but had developed policies to support them.  They have found a candidate who

1.      will stop the war on the poor.
2.      stands for peace, respects international treaties and institutions like the U.N. and International Criminal Court, and tries to resolve problems through negotiation.
3.      will defend the separation of church and state, and the individual rights guaranteed us by the Constitution.
4.      opposes discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, and who stands for women's reproductive rights and recognizes that these rights depend on universal health insurance.
5.      will address questions of global economic imbalance and stand up for the rights of immigrants.
6.      will challenge racism domestically and internationally.

Dennis Kucinich
has developed policies to support these policies; supporting unions and the right to organize; cutting the bloated military budget; restoring environmental regulations and launching a "Global Green Deal" to benefit developing countries; withdrawing from NAFTA and the WTO and challenging IMF/World Bank policies; repealing the "Patriot Act"; upholding Roe v. Wade; working for universal health insurance; and abolishing the racially and economically biased death penalty.

SIGNATORIES: BARBARA EHRENREICH, political essayist and author ("Nickel and Dimed"); ANGELA GILLIAM, professor and expert on Black feminist anthropology; YNESTRA KING, writer and activist on environmental, feminist, and disability issues; GAIL LERNER, organizer in the global women's movement and with U.N. agencies; GRACE PALEY, peace activist and author ("Enormous Changes at the Last Minute"); ROSALIND PETCHESKY, international feminist activist and political science professor; DIGNA SANCHEZ, Latina community activist in New York; MEREDITH TAX, novelist, essayist and international organizer of feminist writers.
Although the statement has just started to circulate, it has already attracted signatures from such prominent feminists as BLANCHE WEISEN COOK, biographer of Eleanor Roosevelt; MARILYN FRENCH, author of "The Women's Room"; actress and singer RONNIE GILBERT; Jewish activist and poet IRENA KLEPFISZ; and political scientist ZILLAH EISENSTEIN.

Pete Passports’ Comments on the latest UP!:
>> '...we've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbour.'
Oh no we haven't!  Haven't you seen the progs or read anything about the great moon-landing conspiracy? It was all jigged up in a studio on Earth: salient points are; a) US flag flapping in airless 'moon' atmosphere, b)shadows go in several directions indicating more than one light source, c) shot of 'first step for mankind' shown from some distance away from 'spacecraft' begging the question 'who put that there?' d) desperate necessity of US to make a big splash seeing how Russia had put a man in orbit before it, e) all they could do was get a satellite up at the time. In fact, actually making it beyond Earth and out into space is impossible except for robotic vehicles as the Van Allen Belt [a huge expanse of radiation we would have to travel through to get 'out'] would fry any living thing, especially thin skinned humans in aluminium foil boxes. To carry enough shielding [lead] to protect people from this radiation would result in a craft that would never get off the ground or even move slowly on it. Unless you hired David Icke to levitate it of course. Perhaps yogic flying might be funded by NASA to assist them to get off the ground? At the moment it takes millions of tons of chemical propellants [which turn Florida into a chemical pollution state] to get a tiny capsule up into orbit. About time humans accepted Earth was our only home and there is nowhere else for us, so we'd better start respecting it and looking after it. But no chance of that.
I can't believe you even print Icke's name let alone put links, risking being taken for loonies just like him. I mean, how many times do things have to come round and round, each generation being served up the same old drivel as if it's fact. Icke is one of those [rare] loonies who's aware of how the media works and has milked it with his semi-celebrity status. Otherwise he'd be a care in the community case, or in a doorway swearing at commuters. I've heard the guy, he had a whole TV audience tittering with embarrassment at the [straight-faced] bollox he was spouting, but it sold some books. I think it's a bad idea to be associated with him in any way, even a link is likely to damage credibility.
'... and speculating about civilisations millions of years ahead of ours...' is that ahead in progress/development terms or ahead in the future? We have no future as a species so any speculation about likely civilizations is wasted time, and at best an escape from the shit we're responsible for here and now [hah, Here and Now, Ram Das I believe]. Didn't you know, we're on a path to environmental armageddon [armageddon outa here] and that's why a whole generation dances non-stop to repetitive, meaningless muzak while e-'d up and senseless, it's because they all know it deep down and are scared and depressed on a cellular level. We've fucked up as a species and it's crashing about our ears. It's a slow process in our puny terms but inexorable, and there's nothing much we can do about it except try to change ourselves and others in the hope it's not too late.
As for hydrogen as the panacea, currently it takes more energy to extract hydrogen than is got from it, hardly a useful equation. Theoretically it would be a good clean energy source - if one believed in something for nothing - but we live in a finite world of fixed immutable laws of physics [I won't go into that at the moment!] and all my experience shows that there's always a price to pay, even though it may not be visible to all but the most clear sighted. Apart form the energy equation there's the problem of supply. Yes there's an awful lot of water on the planet, but it's inextricably bound up in the eco-systems that drive everything and make conditions fit for humans. Given our huge energy use, massive quantities of water would need to be 'used' and would be gone forever, result, diminishing water supplies and disrupted weather and perhaps finally a loss of atmosphere leading eventually to a dried out planet like Mars. This human idea of something for nothing is what has led to so much destruction in the first place, we can't come up with solutions by employing the same old mental models that have proved so fatally flawed up to now. The real, and only, answer is solar - which means also wind, tidal, wave and biomass. It's renewable and free, we just need to spend on the hardware and infrastructure, then it keeps on coming. So electric cars eventually, powered from renewable grid-linked electricity stored in batteries. ANYTHING else is a con, a non-starter, fantasy.
Must get on, mind how you go.  Keep a clean nose!
Peace
Pete / Wales
