and there you have it!  how come it’s different is because (look around dimwits!) things have been changing.  the vast majority of the planet’s population are ready to move into the future and it’s very hard for dinosaurs to realise that everybody is NOT like themselves, they DON’T just drop all their principles and ideals just because one side won the war.  they want to know why there had to be a war in the first place, and, irrespective of who won the war, they have a load of other moral and ethical and practical questions to which they demand answers.

right now it’s  absence of WMDs and the absence of al-Qaeda connections, but the JESSICA LYNCH story keeps bubbling along nicely in the wings while enron trundles along forgotten corridors.

and, of course, there’s the other War where the vampire elite have been telling massive LIES for decades!

LONG TERM ECSTASY USERS HAVE BRAIN DAMAGE NOT!!
Government backed scientists in Germany published new research this week which failed to find any significant or lasting harm to the brains of heavy ecstasy users.
While the study of past and present heavy users (who averaged 827 and 793 pills respectively) uncovered tiny differences in SERT densities (relating to potential seratonin damage) between current and non-users, the differences disappeared altogether when former heavy users were compared to non users.
        “These results were particularly interesting in that they dramatically contradict an American study done by George Ricuarte (funded by the US government) which used similar brain scan techniques and ecstasy users with a similar level of lifetime use, but which claimed to have found massive (as much as 90%) loss of SERT"  said an editorial in the hugely prestigious Journal of Nuclear Medicine.

Catherine Green, whose brother Philip, a Sea King helicopter pilot, was killed accidentally in the early days of the Iraq Attack, has blamed Tony Blair personally for her brother's death by involving him in an unjustifiable conflict.
 
The British military have been asking members of bereaved families for their suggestions for a memorial service for those members of the armed services who were killed in the invasion.  In an extraordinary savage and moving article last week, Catherine wrote:

'Simply that our Prime Minister and any other MPs with blood on their hands will have the decency to stay away.'   She may not be the only one to think that way.

A 1,000-KILOMETER FENCE PREEMPTS THE ROAD MAP

The first attempt at partitioning the land between Jews and Arabs, undertaken by the United Nations in 1947, resulted in the Palestinian majority being offered 47% of its historic homeland, with the rest allocated to a new Jewish state.  The Palestinians rejected the plan and the ensuing war established Israel.
        The Palestinians had to wait 46 years for the next offer: Under the 1993 Oslo accords, the Palestinians were to receive 22% of their homeland - the territories of the West Bank and Gaza.  They accepted the terms, but Israel never got around to returning most of the land. 
Then Prime Minister Ehud Barak of Israel decided to speed things up and negotiate a final agreement at Camp David in 2000, "generously" offering the Palestinians 80% of the 22% of the 100% of their original homeland.  Yasser Arafat refused to sign and the second intifada began.
        Barak's successor, Ariel Sharon, has devised an even more miserly take-it-or-leave-it deal: the Palestinians can have a state on 42% of the 80% of the 22% of 100% of their original homeland.
        Sharon is deadly serious. The proof is not to be found in the "road map," which is diverting attention from Sharon's real goal, which is to redraw the territorial contours of historic Palestine himself - in concrete and barbed wire.
        The security wall which Israel is hastily constructing around the West Bank - officially justified by the need to stop terror attacks - will cage in more than 2 million Palestinians.  Another electrified fence is already imprisoning 1 million Palestinians in Gaza.

ANOTHER BIG LIE THAT’S UNRAVELLING
PENTAGON AIMS GUNS AT LYNCH REPORTS

It’s one thing when the talk-show bullies who shamelessly smeared the last president, even as he attacked the training camps of Al Qaeda, now term it anti-American or even treasonous to dare criticise the Bush administration.  When our Pentagon, however  a $400-billion- a-year juggernaut - savages individual journalists for questioning its version of events, it is worth noting.

Especially if you're that journalist.

Last week, this column reported the findings of a British Broadcasting Corp. special report that accused the U.S. military and media of inaccurately and manipulatively hyping the story of U.S. Pvt. Jessica Lynch’s rescue from an Iraq hospital.  The column was also informed by similar and independently reported articles and statements in the Toronto Star, the Washington Post and other reputable publications.

Expected - and received - was a hysterical belch of outrage from the right-wing media, led by Rupert Murdoch's Fox empire.

A fiery and disingenuous response from the Pentagon, however, was quite a bit more sobering.

Calling the column a "tirade," Assistant Secretary of Defence for Public Affairs Victoria Clarke wrote in a letter to The Times that "Scheer's claims are outrageous, patently false and unsupported by the facts."

"Official spokespeople in Qatar and in Washington, as well as the footage released, reflected the events accurately," the Pentagon letter continued.  "To suggest otherwise is an insult and does a grave disservice to the brave men and women involved."

Actually, what is a grave disservice is manipulating a gullible media with leaked distortions from unnamed official sources about Lynch's heroics in battle.  That aside, it would have been easier to rebut the Pentagon if its spokeswoman had actually questioned any of the facts the BBC or this column reported.  In particular, the Pentagon turned down the request by the BBC and other media to view the full, unedited footage of the rescue.

Perhaps Clarke is frustrated that in the days since the BBC report, several major publications such as the Chicago Tribune and the London Daily Mail have independently verified much of the BBC's disturbing account of what the broadcasting corporation called "one of the most stunning pieces of news management ever conceived."

The distortions concerning Lynch began two days after the rescue with a front-page Washington Post story by veteran reporters Susan Schmidt and Vernon Loeb.  They cited U.S. officials as the source of their information that Lynch "fought fiercely and shot several enemy soldiers, firing her weapon until she ran out of ammunition" and that she "continued firing after she sustained multiple gunshot wounds."  The Post quoted one of the unnamed U.S. officials as saying "she was fighting to the death.  She did not want to be taken alive."

Despite their current defensiveness, Clarke and other Pentagon honchos had to know that the story attributed to U.S. officials was false because Lynch had at that point already been rescued and examined by U.S. military doctors, who found no evidence of a single gunshot wound, let alone multiple gunshot wounds.  Yet they did nothing to challenge the Post story, which quickly became the main heroic propaganda myth of the U.S. invasion of Iraq.

It was only last week, after the BBC-initiated brouhaha, that the Pentagon finally launched its own investigation of what actually occurred when Lynch was taken prisoner.  According to the Washington Times, the investigation came about after top Pentagon officials cast doubt on the Lynch battle-scene account, of which she has no memory.

However, the Pentagon investigators were not asked to look into the circumstances surrounding Lynch's subsequent rescue.  Much of the BBC's account has now been supported by other media investigations, which confirm that a U.S. attack on an unguarded hospital was spun into the stuff of Hollywood heroics.

The Tribune's Monday story provided new details of how slickly a tale of derring-do was created, enhanced for tv by that 5-minute Pentagon-supplied night-vision video.  The Tribune also added details supporting the BBC account that hospital staff members had placed Lynch in an ambulance and tried to deliver her to a U.S. checkpoint before being turned back by American fire.

What is particularly sad in all of this is that a wonderfully hopeful story was available to the Pentagon to sell to the eager media: one in which besieged Iraqi doctors and nurses bravely cared for - and supplied their own blood to - a similarly brave young American woman in a time of madness and violence. Instead, eager to turn the war into a morality play between good and evil, the military used  abused! - Lynch to put a heroic spin on an otherwise sorry tale of unjustified invasion.

The truth hurts, but that's no excuse for trying to shoot the messenger.

A NEW SLICE ON PHYSICS
Is the world we see trapped on a thin membrane separating us from vast other realms? Some scientists say that would explain a lot.

What if everything we hold dear is but a thin slice of some larger, unreachable reality, like a flickering shadow cast on the craggy wall of a cave?  What if the moon and stars, your home, your thoughts, your cat, are but projections on this wall - mere suggestions of unfathomable realms beyond?
        In the last few years, a mathematically rigorous version of Plato's 2,000-year-old thought experiment has been refashioning the way physicists think about everything from subatomic particles to the Big Bang.  The universe we see, according to this scenario, is stuck on a thin membrane of space-time embedded in a much larger cosmos.  And our membrane may be only one of many, all of which may warp, wiggle, connect and collide with one another in as many as 10 dimensions.  Physicists call this new frontier the "brane world."
        The idea could help solve a long list of outstanding mysteries.   Among them: What is the "dark matter" that seems to make up 90% of the universe?  And why is gravity trillions of times weaker than electromagnetism?
        The revolution was set off in the mid-1990s when UC Santa Barbara physicist Joe Polchinski determined through mathematics that branes were a surface to which things attach, like hair to skin - except the "things" in this case were the minuscule "strings" that may well be the fundamental ingredients of the universe.
        "I was just fiddling around with mathematics Within a week or two [other physicists] had done things with it I hadn't envisioned. It was like taking the stopper out of the dam. Things poured through."
        Alan Guth of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, creator of the currently accepted version of the Big Bang, said recently he felt a little like Rip Van Winkle - picking up his head from a long sleep only to notice that the landscape of physics he thought he knew had suddenly, drastically, changed.
        Stephen Hawking of the University of Cambridge, among others, envisions brane worlds bubbling up out of the void, giving rise to whole new universes.  He ends his latest book, "The Universe in a Nutshell," with a call to explore this "brane new world."
        One might well wonder why such a seemingly bizarre concept has attracted so many well-established physicists.  The short answer is: desperation.

Desperation  Mother of All Inventions
The laws of nature that describe the large-scale universe to an astonishing degree of precision (Einstein's general relativity) are incompatible with the laws that describe the small-scale universe with the same astonishing exactness (quantum theory).  This means either that one of these well-tested theories is wrong (all but inconceivable) or that there is some larger, more encompassing theory that accommodates both.

To date, the only theory that comes close to marrying the two is "string theory" - a mathematically elegant set of ideas that has swept the world of physics over the last few decades.  According to string theory, the basic ingredients of the universe are not point-like particles, but tiny strings vibrating in 10-dimensional space.  Although still untested, string theory has scored a spectacular series of theoretical successes, earning it an ever-widening circle of admirers.
        And yet string theory remains a realm apart from day-to-day physics  lovely to behold but innately aloof.
        For one thing, the strings are so small that it would take a particle accelerator larger than the solar system to create the energies needed to "see" them.  This means, in effect, that strings can never be detected.
        For another, the complex mathematics required to deal with the tortured 10-dimensional landscape is beyond the reach of most physicists.
        Brane models change all that.   Unlike in string theory, the extra dimensions in brane worlds can be big, infinitely big. "It led to a whole new bunch of possibilities that could be experimentally tested," said physicist Jim Cline of McGill University in Montreal.
        What's more, branes don't require the full range of mathematical tools required for string theory, opening the door to new groups of scientists.  "You can use methods that are part and parcel of more traditional physics," said Columbia University physicist Brian Greene.  "So a person who's not a string theorist can jump into the field and make contributions."
        Even to physicists, much of this seems unbearably strange.  But in physics, strangeness comes with the territory.  "When I first learned about quantum physics as an undergraduate, it just about destroyed my mind," said Stanford post-doctoral fellow Stephon Alexander.  "And now, 12 years later, it's just a tool."

Nothing New Under The Sun
There's actually nothing particularly new about the idea that space may extend into unseen dimensions, or even that the world we know is somehow trapped on a membrane.
        Extra dimensions were such a hot topic in the 19th century that Victorian schoolmaster Edwin Abbott wrote a famous science fiction novel, "Flatland," based on the notion that our limited perceptions prevented us from seeing worlds existing right in front of our three-dimensional noses.  Albert Einstein made extra dimensions an integral part of physics when he used a fourth dimension, time, in his theory of relativity in 1905.  Ten years later, he showed that this interwoven fabric of space-time could warp under the influence of massive objects - "causing" the force we know as gravity.
        The branes playing such a large role in physics today are richer and more mathematically rigorous than early versions.
        Essentially, a brane is a discontinuity in space-time, a boundary where things meet, like the surface of a pond where the water meets the sky.
        "It's a defect in the quantum fabric," said Ruth Gregory of the University of Durham in Britain.  On one side of the defect would be the vacuum of empty space.  A vacuum with somewhat different properties might exist on the other side.
        Imagine our brane as pond scum - a thin film that divides the air above from a deep (perhaps infinitely deep) body of water below.  Most of what we experience is trapped in the scum.  But beyond is a whole other world of currents swirling beneath the surface.  Their motion might tug on our scum.   We'd feel it as nothing but a gentle disturbance, never dreaming of what lurks below.
        A brane doesn't always divide one thing from another.  It may just be a condensation of stuff, "a localized lump of energy and curvature that likes to hang together," Stanford University physicist Steve Shenker said.
        Either way, it's a place where things get stuck - like the scum on the pond.  "That was the revolution," said Harvard University physicist Lisa Randall.   "To realize that branes were honest-to-goodness objects."
        Randall played a pivotal role in the revolution when she and Johns Hopkins University physicist Raman Sundrum realized that branes could be infinitely large and yet remain invisible.
        The reason: We can't see anything outside our brane, because light can't escape or enter it.  We can't hear anything outside, because sound travels through matter, and matter is stuck to our brane.  We can't use radioactivity to sense what's beyond, or even break through with nuclear bombs, because nuclear forces are also firmly nailed to our brane.  There could be a big blue elephant sitting not a millimeter away in another dimension, but we wouldn't know it's there because everything we use to "see" is stuck to our brane.
        Only gravity can't be glued to a particular brane.  Gravity, as Einstein revealed, is the curving of space-time itself, so it wanders willy-nilly where it will, leaking off our brane into what physicists call "the bulk" - the rest of space-time.
        Brane scenarios offer an elegant explanation for why gravity is such a weakling: Maybe it's not any weaker than the other forces.  Maybe it's just concentrated somewhere else in the bulk, or on another brane.

Brane New Worlde
Explaining the wimpiness of gravity is but a taste of what this Brane New World might do.
        Consider another embarrassing problem that has stumped astronomers for decades. At least 90% of the matter in the universe is AWOL.  Or more precisely, it is known to exist because of its gravitational pull (without it, galaxies wouldn't hold together) but can't be detected by any other means.  The standard approach has been to populate the universe with exotic new forms of matter, too elusive to be readily seen.
        If our brane is but a small slice of a much larger cosmos, however, the "dark matter" might be nothing but ordinary matter trapped on another brane.   Such a shadow world, Hawking speculates, might contain "shadow human beings wondering about the mass that seems to be missing from their world."
        Or take the mystery of why elementary particles always appear in triplets, each set heavier than the next.  One possibility is that each triplet is the same particle repeating itself on three layers of branes.  They would have different masses on our brane for the same reason as shadows on a wall can be different sizes depending on the distance of the object that casts them.
        "One of the neat things about the whole extra-dimensional idea," Polchinski said, "is that all the physics that we see - all the kinds of particles and their detailed properties - are reflections of some inner geometry."
        As in real estate, value depends on location, location, location.
        The physicists most entranced with brane worlds are cosmologists.  Over the last decade, a new array of telescopes and satellites has provided them with sophisticated tools for taking the measure of the universe.  What was once little more than navel gazing is fast becoming a data-drenched science.

Consider the Big Bang
But cosmologists need string theory to understand the origin of the universe, because laws of physics break down at the tiny distances and immense gravity at play in the Big Bang.  For now, cosmologists can see back in time only so far, and no farther.
        Consider the Big Bang.  According to current theory, the universe sprang from an infinitely small speck of space-time known as a "singularity" - a paradox in the accepted laws of physics, which hold that nothing can be infinitely small.
        "A singularity is a euphemism for: 'Things have gone haywire  Things make no sense,' " said Greene, one of the coordinators of the Aspen workshop.  "The Big Bang singularity is an 'It doesn't make sense' on the most important problem - namely, how did it all begin."
        Branes can enclose the Big Bang singularity like a sheet of cellophane - avoiding the problem of the infinitely small by giving the singularity some dimension.
        Not surprisingly, the string-cosmology connection that brane worlds brought about is also producing something of a culture clash.  Until recently, string theorists have remained sceptical of the grand theories of cosmologists.   String theory is mathematically rigorous.  Cosmologists are a wilder bunch willing to try out almost any model of the universe and see where it leads.
        "We know how branes work," said string theorist Nathan Seiberg of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J.  "We know what are properties of branes, and what are not properties of branes.  [Cosmologists] violate all the rules.  Is this good or bad?  I'm not sure.  Because if they come up with something which violates the rules of string theory but does all sorts of other wonderful things, then maybe we in string theory will have a motivation to look into it."

Welcome to the Zoo!
Branes already have brought a whole new zoo of exotic species into the world of physics.  There are skinny branes and fat branes; empty branes and full; active and still.
        "A brane which is wiggling a lot would translate to a brane that has excitations on it, particles on it," said McGill's Cline.  That would be a brane with atoms, forces, us.  "But I could also have a cold brane. That would be like a cold, empty universe. The brane still has some energy density, but there's no particles living there."
        And while the term brane derives from membrane - a two-dimensional surface - branes could also exist in every possible dimension.  A string is a "1-brane," for one-dimensional object.  Brane worlds (like the one we might live in) must by necessity be "3 plus 1" branes - three dimensions of space plus one of time.  But you can just as easily have a pair of 10-dimensional branes bounding an 11-dimensional universe.
        For now, no one knows whether the building blocks of the ultimate theory will be strings or branes.  "You can't really say," Polchinski said.  "It's kind of Zen-like, but in a very precise way."
        Ultimately, brane worlds will stand or fall, like all science, on the twin tests of consistency and experiment.  Whatever bizarre brane worlds may exist in some larger dimensional landscape, they can't change what we perceive.   The stars can't slip off into hyperspace.  The cat can't be disturbed from the couch.  Physics has to answer to nature as we know it.

I agree that this is most crucial.  But it is not easy.  Can you point me to a place that is doing this work... handily?  It is my quest, to be sure, because it is that middle third that’s the swing vote and thus the battleground... but it takes a masterful patient hand to reach out and actually "reach" that middle third.

Repairing the American Dream
It’s 5:30am and I had to get out of bed to share with you something very important that happened last night in Berkeley.  Along with 800 others, I listened with rapt attention to Congressman Dennis Kucinich who is a Candidate for U.S. President talk about “Repairing the American Dream”.   Jack Kornfield and others introduced him to an audience that included Ram Dass, Daniel Ellsberg, Stan Grof and many other of our respected elders. 
It's the first time I can remember hearing someone in government speak passionately, straight from his heart communicating truth, wisely and compassionately.  Although he’s a little known candidate at this time, Kucinich is someone who is saying what so many of us are starving to hear. Those of us old enough to remember what it was like to be proud to be an American had a taste of that possibility once again.  When “America, the Beautiful” was sung so beautifully it took on a poignant dimension with everyone close to tears for the despair and helplessness that so long has covered up our long-lost joy and gratitude for being part of this country.  All the ideals that we had growing up of America being the land of equal opportunity invited by Miss Liberty to “give me your tired, your poor,” were stirred up in some faraway place in the heart that understood how one could be patriotic. 

Dennis spoke about creating a Department of Peace, of re-joining the world community as an important but caring member of a global family.  He eloquently spoke of our need to understand the truth of our inter-connectedness and inter-dependence with all peoples and life on the planet.  He said that instead of creating more fear in the world it is our responsibility to address the suffering we’ve created through a policy based on greed and domination.  He talked about using much of the $400 billion we now spend on weapons and defence for education, universal health care, a clean environment and addressing the many inequities our present system thrives on.  He said that he knows there are many millions in our country who say with bewilderment, “I can’t believe the direction this country is going in.”

Dennis’ words were like an oasis in a vast desert.  They were not contrived.  He used no notes.  He’s bright and articulate.  He responded to questions from the audience spontaneously, with the ring of truth that everyone listening knew was coming from a place of deep caring.  He encouraged everyone to join him in repairing the American dream, in feeling inspired once again at what this country can be. 

I’m writing to you to let you know there is someone in our government who is not just another politician.  His voice needs to be heard and I urge you to listen.  His website is:

In recent weeks, a number of apparently unrelated news reports have, in sum, told a truth that is never reported.  According to Human Rights Watch, thousands of British and American cluster bombs were fired at and dropped on civilian areas in Iraq.  British artillery fired more than 2,000 of them at Basra alone.  Each shell scatters bomblets over a wide area, and many fail to explode.  Their victims are "not known", says the Ministry of Defence.  They are known.  They are often children; Iraq's population is almost half children.

At the same time, HMS Turbulent, a nuclear-powered submarine, returned to Plymouth flying the Jolly Roger, the pirates' emblem.  This vessel fired 30 American Tomahawk cruise missiles at Iraq, at a cost to the British taxpayer of £21m.  What did they hit?  How many people did they kill or maim in this nation of sick people and disproportionate numbers of children?  The commander would only say that he was "proud to be called forward".

Readers will remember the patriotic calls to "support the troops" regardless of one's misgivings about the war.  Why a non-conscripted force deserved our "support" in its illegal and craven actions against a weak and stricken nation was never explained by any politician, newspaper or broadcaster.

Annie Sprinkle is a prostitute/porn star turned performance artist/sex guru.  She tours with a one-woman theatre show about her life in pornography.  Her most recent book is Hardcore from the Heart: The Pleasures, Profits and Politics of Sex in Performance (Continuum Press).  She is working on a new book with David Jay Brown on sex and psychedelics.  Recently she received a Doctorate of Human Sexuality at the Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality, in San Francisco.

I was surprised to be invited to speak at the AllChemical Arts Conference - a week-long event about entheogens and creativity.  I had not been a particularly outspoken advocate for these substances. 
Being a Sex Worker (call girl/porn actress and director), who often did interviews with the media - especially as I evolved into a controversial performance artist and sex educator - I was routinely trying to debunk the myth that all sex workers were hopeless drug addicts.  Fortunately, I have never been a drug addict, but indeed I have tried most every popular drug at least three times.

I was curious about what a conference dedicated to entheogens might be like, and curious about the people who would attend such a conference, so I accepted the invitation to speak.  It was as I was preparing my presentation for the illuminati of the psychedelic world that I realized what a profound, and positive impact my psychedelic experiences had had on my life, and in particular, on my sex life.  In an aha! moment, it became clear that psychedelics had been perhaps my greatest sex educator.

LSD
When I was fourteen (a full three years before I was to lose my virginity), I had my first psychedelic drug experience.  I went to high school in Panama City, Panama in the '60s.  My father, and most of my friends' fathers, worked with the American Embassy.  We were good, responsible teenagers, so on the weekends our parents let us go up the coast to Panama's beautiful tropical beaches and stay overnight in beach huts. Those spectacular beaches became the laboratories for our innocent drug experiments.  All kinds of inebriants were available; opium, speed, Panama Red Cannabis, mescaline, cocaine, magic mushrooms, LSD, etc.
One evening a friend, also fourteen years old, offered me a hit of blotter acid, to "expand my mind."  There were no instructions, no warnings, and no rituals.  I tripped my brains out all night long.  Totally unprepared for lysergic acid diethylamide, my teenage fears became magnified a thousand fold; the beach crawled with snakes, people morphed into previously unknown life forms, my heart beat out of its chest, my eyes bulged out of my head.  I did not surrender, but endured, and could not wait until it was over.

Rough as the night was, the next day I was a wiser person.  I’d experienced alternate realities, new dimensions, other ways of seeing and feeling.  I discovered that life was not necessarily as it appeared.  I learned that I had the power to radically change my consciousness, and hence the world around me.  This was excellent information to have on my way to becoming an adult - a sexual adult. 

During subsequent beach weekends I took more LSD trips, usually with a sense of dread and imagined peer pressure, mixed with curiosity.  I remember watching water boil for hours, seeing wallpaper patterns becoming kaleidoscopes, and finding God in the eyes of a cat.  Mostly I felt paranoid and excruciatingly insecure, but there were moments where I experienced great bliss and yummy sensations.  My perceptions were heightened, I felt electric, got all tingly, and was awed by life.  My first experiences with altered states came not from having sex, but through psychedelics.

Mescaline
At sixteen, I finally had my first real sexual experience.  On that same night, I also had my first mescaline experience.  My boyfriend Van was twenty-six.  He owned a hippie coffee shop.  He was kind, adoring, and wise.  We rode his motorcycle to his beach house for the weekend.  He offered me a hit of mescaline.  We each took one.  I half expected him to turn into a three-headed monster at any moment like with LSD, but the mescaline was more gentle and more sensuous than acid.  We walked on the beach, hand in hand, and it was a magical experience.  I'd never seen so many stars in the sky; the ocean waves and sand were filled with phosphorescent algae.  The world was covered in multi-coloured glitter.  Van kissed me and I couldn't tell where my body started or ended next to his.  I felt big love.

After a romantic and transcendental evening on the beach, we went back to his place and he treated me to my first cunnilingus experience.  Perhaps it was just timing, but the mescaline was definitely an aphrodisiac.  I felt so open, aroused, and trusting.  Each touch was amazing.  It was the most ecstatic experience I’d ever had.  A few weeks later, when I turned seventeen, I happily got rid of my virginity with Van.  I was expecting intercourse to feel as overwhelming and transcendental as a psychedelic experience.  Nice as it was, it didn't feel that way, although later in life it would. 

At eighteen, I was living a hippie lifestyle in Tucson, Arizona.  I did more mescaline, more LSD, and became wildly sexually adventurous.  In a famous Playboy magazine interview in 1966, Timothy Leary exclaimed that LSD was the most powerful aphrodisiac ever discovered.¹  I don't remember having much, if any, sex while tripping on acid.  I did not find LSD conducive to wanting to be intimate or to be touched, although I've talked with plenty of people who have had mind-blowing sex on LSD.  However in retrospect, I see that my drug experiences did free me up from following convention.  When most of my schoolmates went on to college, I ended up working in a "massage parlour."  To everyone's surprise, especially my own, I found my calling!  I was already breaking laws by smoking pot and taking psychedelics (which I felt should be legal), so to do illegal prostitution was not that much of a stretch.  I believed prostitution should be legal also, and became involved in the prostitutes' rights movement.  I enjoyed my "work" and it fit my needs at the time. 

Before LSD became illegal, Dr. Stanislav Grof practiced psychotherapy with his patients while they were on LSD, often with very successful results.  Sexual issues would sometimes come up, often in surprising ways.  In his book, LSD Psychotherapy, he wrote that: "Occasionally LSD subjects experienced themselves as participants in complex sexual rituals and ceremonies of different cultures, such as fertility festivals, rites of passage, ancient temple prostitution, or scenes of phallic worship. Experiences of this kind frequently convey very specific and detailed, historically or anthropologically correct information that was not previously available to the subject."²  When I started working in prostitution, I felt a strong connection to a long lineage of whores and sexual healers before me.  Perhaps this connection was inspired by my psychedelic journeys.

Peyote
Every time I was about to ingest a psychoactive substance, I was hesitant and scared, but something told me there was an important experience to be had, and some key information to be gained, so I pushed myself.  It was an opportunity to peek behind "The Veil," to go beyond everyday reality and connect with the Universe in deep and intimate ways.  A psychedelic substance was never once something I desired to do, but something I felt I had to do for personal growth.

In the Arizona desert I ate peyote buttons, a plant source of mescaline.  People warned me that it was poisonous for the body and would likely make me vomit -- it did.  I ate the buttons about half a dozen times.  One night I had a remarkably erotic experience.  I made love with the Earth and the Sky in an energetic and emotional way as I meditated and masturbated ("medibated") under the stars.  I became acutely aware of the sensuality of the desert, of every grain of sand, of the wind, and the plants.  It was super erotic, immensely satisfying, and oh so cosmic!  After that experience, I expanded my concept of what sex was.  It was not simply about bodies coming together for physical sex, but about circulating sexual energy, which was everywhere and available just for the asking.  I could tap into it just by tuning in and saying "yes."  I realized that everything was sexual/ sensual - that even all my little cells were all having sex.  Sex was both microscopic and enormous.

Other Drugs
At twenty-six I was living in Manhattan.  I became interested in exploring my "shadow side," "Dark Eros," the worlds of S/M, extreme fetish, dominance/submission.  By day I worked in an S/M house as a professional dominatrix/ submissive.  By night I frequented the Hellfire Club, a veritable smorgasbord of kinky sex.  I experimented with some of the non-psychedelic drugs; crack, angel dust, heroin, etc.  I was never a lover of drugs, but I honestly felt it was my duty as a "sex researcher" and "pleasure artist" to try them.  I had visited the Temple of Delphi and the brothels of Pompeii.  Although I did have some wonderful orgasms on Ecstasy, the experience of Ecstasy was not so much about orgasm or sex as it was about looking deeply into my Self - heart, soul, and psyche.

I read that throughout history prostitutes utilised various aphrodisiacs and opiates with their clients.  In my experience, these drugs were in a different category than the psychedelics.  Although I did have some very interesting sexual adventures with these substances, there was not a sense of deep exploration of my soul and psyche.  I had a sense of getting high and tuning out, as opposed to going deeper and tuning in.  I also saw firsthand how incredibly destructive particular drugs could be when some of my friends became heavily addicted to them.  I never met anyone addicted to entheogens.

MDMA / Ecstasy
By the mid-'80s the Great Dying was well underway; AIDS had taken its huge toll on my community.  I'd lost many friends and lovers, and was trying to cope.  Being a very sexually active gal, I was desperately searching for new, satisfying forms of sexuality, which could be enjoyed without exchanging bodily fluids.

I signed up for a three-day Sacred Sex workshop led by a Tantra teacher named Jwala.  At the workshop, my workshop partner gave me my first hit of Ecstasy, and that's exactly what I experienced -- ecstasy.  It's no wonder "E" is extremely popular in the "sex community."  Before MDMA became illegal it had been used successfully during marriage/relationship counselling sessions.  Therapists found that partners were better able to communicate with each other while on MDMA. It reduces performance anxiety to zero and creates a yummy, lovey-dovey feeling, and a nice shift in consciousness.  Needless to say, I became a convert -- to Tantra, and to Ecstasy.

I continued to take Ecstasy, once, twice, or three times a year.  Jwala taught me about how to do ritual, about "preparing the space," and stating one's intention before making love.  I used those same techniques when I would ingest a substance, which really helped make the experiences more satisfying. 
I mostly preferred taking Ecstasy alone.  I used it as a tool for self-evaluation.  Usually I would spend some time making love with myself and doing "sexual healing" on myself.  The first time I did "E" alone, I fell deeply in love with myself for the first time, which was very good for me as I had a relatively low self-image.  This helped me transition out of working in prostitution and appearing in mainstream porn films, and into doing more of the kind of work I wanted to do at that point. 

I also found myself desiring to connect with women, both sexually and in my work.  I started making "feminist porn."  The second time I did Ecstasy, I heard a voice tell me to quit smoking tobacco, which I then did permanently, after 25 years of a heavy smoking habit. 
Another time, I sat naked in front of my mirror and looked at my repressed anger, and let it surface.  I hissed like a snake for several hours, and witnessed my inner Medusa in a remarkably non-judgmental and fearless way.  I realised how sexual energy and anger are connected.  I realised that in order to go to the next level of my sexuality I needed to learn to better express my anger.  I practiced and, sure enough, I learned to have long, extended orgasms.  When I then produced and directed my own video, The Sluts and Goddesses Video Workshop (1992), I captured myself having an extremely intense five-minute-long orgasm.  In retrospect I realise that I used a lot of psychedelic imagery in the video.  The project was quite successful.

Although I did have some wonderful orgasms on Ecstasy, the experience of Ecstasy was not so much about orgasm or sex, as it was about looking deeply into my Self--heart, soul, and psyche.  Each time I took Ecstasy I retained some key piece of information that I could utilise to grow as a person, and expand my (sexual) horizons.  I found the lover I had been searching for so long -- me!  When I took it with lovers, I could feel a sense of empathy with my lover without doing anything.  I experienced my body as a temple, and sex as prayer.  Ecstasy took me into my heart the way that psychedelics took me into my mind and spirit.  Also when on Ecstasy I would sometimes have wonderful, long "crygasms." 

Ecstasy showed me a deeper kind of love, which I was inspired to create more of in my life, without the drug.  And I did.  A lover of mine who had studied Tantra in India for several years, told me that with Ecstasy "a person could get to similar ecstatic and spiritual places that took Tantra yogis a lifetime of strict disciplines to get to - if they were lucky enough to ever get to those states." 
There is of course a down side to Ecstasy.  I had some miserable hangovers.  I slept with my best friend's husband when I shouldn't have.  Oops.  Some folks let down their guard and have risky, unsafe sex, and I'm told that a few people have had medical emergencies with extremely serious consequences.

In 1993, I was at my sexual peak.  I was an orgasm on two legs.  My sexual energy flowed like bubbly pink champagne throughout my body on a daily basis. I studied and practised Tantra relatively seriously, and all my chakras were spinning like pinwheels in a strong wind. 
Around this time I started facilitating sexuality workshops for women.  The main thing I taught was the Taoist Erotic Massage Rituals (created by Joseph Kramer of the Body Electric School in Oakland), consisting of intensive genital massage strokes combined with lots of rhythmic breathing.  It was powerful and effective stuff!  Because of my drug experiences I was prepared to handle the very high erotic vibratory states that these techniques propelled our groups into.  Sometimes there were very intense emotions and moments of distress.  I was comfortable and experienced enough to manage these transcendental states because of my experiences with drugs.  And I learned how to take women (and sometimes men) on pseudo-psychedelic journeys - without drugs!
