THIS IS THE LAST UP! FOR A MONTH
the iraq ‘war’ is ‘over’ (just beginning underground) and i am off to california to participate in some peaceful activity in the bay area and los angeles. 
this is my 61st year, i KNOW i’ve lived a pretty full life, i’m fairly content now, and my life feels ‘meaningful’ to me  living a quieter life doing the UP!, writing, walking my dog, talking my good friends, very occasional clubbing, summer and a festival or two coming up :)
i don’t personally NEED this month-long reconnaissance trip.  yes, by the time i’m 80, if we continue to follow where we are being led, the world will be a cruel, toxic, paranoid, unjust, militarily repressed consumerist/alienated/terrorist filled nightmare, but i shall be preparing to ‘move on’ and it won’t personally affect me very much. 

no, i’m really going because i feel “called” to do it.  archaic kinda word that  “called”.  until it happened i thought it must be like a loud voice calling from behind the sky or something and maybe that’s going on too.  but what i’m experiencing, like seemingly everybody who resisted the current ‘war’ for whatever reason is feeling, is a huge gap in the world that’s ‘calling’ to be filled.

of course, and increasingly, many, many good people are doing many many good things, but, as a youngish raver wrote me last week:  “There are so many overlaps and different groups, I get confused, you can't join all of them and read all the literature. It's confusion that puts people off.“

to somehow ‘help’ all of us to Come Together - NOBODY SEEMS ABLE TO DO THAT
 
well, i certainly don’t feel able to do it but i feel “called” (by this Ache) to TRY.  try to somehow, first, enthuse the creation, and, second, encourage the support of a common platform we could all stand on. 

right now we run around after every Bush fire/war and spread our energies too thin.  if we could Unite (and california knows it's possible) then WE could be starting the bush fires and THEY‘d be running around trying to damp em down :)   seems a smarter way if we can pull it off.

my plan is to meet with a number of 'activist authoritative people’ who MIGHT be interested in serious work/play on this front.  i have a few public talk situations to fulfil, but my main energies will be going into a number of small Tongs (edutainment groups in private homes) where i’ll be doing a lot of listening, and shall also introduce some suggestions which a group of us have been working on.  the NEWHUMANIFESTO. 

if the goddess blesses this activity, you will be hearing more about it in the future :)

US Forces Encourage Looting!

Khaled Bayomi looks a bit surprised when he sees the American officer on TV regret that they don't have any resources to stop the looting in Baghdad.
"I happened to be there just as the US forces told people to start looting" he says.

Khaled Bayomi went from Malmo, Sweden, to Baghdad to be a human shield, and arrived on the day the fighting begun.  About this he can tell us plenty and for a long time, but the most interesting part of his story is his witness-account about the great surge of looting now taking place.

"I had visited a few friends that live in a worn-down area just beyond the Haifa Avenue, on the west bank of the Tigris River.  It was April 8 and the fighting was so heavy I couldn't make it over to the other side of the river.  On the afternoon it became perfectly quiet, and four American tanks pulled up in position on the outskirts of the slum area. F rom these tanks we heard anxious calls in Arabic, which told the population to come closer.

"All morning anybody who'd tried to cross the streets had been fired upon.  But during this strange silence people eventually became curious.  After three-quarters of an hour the first Baghdad citizens dared to come forward.  At that moment the US solders shot two Sudanese guards, who were posted in front of a local administrative building, on the other side of the Haifa Avenue.

"I was just 300 meters away when the guards where murdered.  Then they shot the building entrance to pieces, and their Arabic translators in the tanks told people to run in and grab whatever they could inside the building.  Rumors spread rapidly and the house was cleaned out.  Next tanks broke down the doors to the Justice Department in the next building, and looting was carried on there too .

"I was standing in a big crowd of civilians who also saw all this .  They did't take any part in the looting, but they were too afraid to take any action against it.  Many of them had tears of shame in their eyes.  The next morning looting spread to the Museum of Modern Art, which lies another 500 meters to the north.  There was also two crowds, one looting and the other disgracefully watching it happen. "

"Are you saying it was the US troops that initiated the looting? "

"Absolutely.  The absence of scenes of joy meant the US forces needed images of Iraqi's who in different ways demonstrated their disgust with Saddam's regime.

"But people in Baghdad tore down a big statue of Saddam? "

"They did?  A US tank did that, actually, close to the hotel where all the journalists live.  Until noon on the 9th of April, I didn't see a single torn picture of Saddam anywhere.  If people had wanted to turn over statues they could have gone for some of the many smaller ones, without the help of an American tank.  If this had been a political uproar. people would have turned over statues first and looted afterwards. "

Home in Sweden Khaled Bayomi is a PhD student at Lund University , where he's been teaching for ten years and researching conflicts in the Middle East.  He's very informed about the conflicts, as well as on the propaganda war.

"Isn't it good that Saddam is gone, then?"

"He isn't gone.  He's dissolved his army into tiny, tiny groups.  This is why there was never any big battle.  Saddam dissolved Iraq as a state as far back as 1992, and has had a parallel tribal structure going, which since then has been altogether decisive for the country.  When the USA begun the war, Saddam completely abandoned the state, and now depends on this tribal structure.  That's why he abandoned the big cities without any battle.

"Now the USA is forced to do everything themselves, because there's no political force from within that could challenge the structure in place.  The two challengers who came in from the outside were immediately lynched. "

He's referring to what happened to General Nazar al-Khazraji, who came in from Denmark, and Shia-muslim leader Abdul Majid al- Khoei, who were both chopped to pieces by a raging crowd in Najaf, because they where perceived to be American puppets.  According to Danish newspaper BT, al-Khazraji was picked up by the CIA in Denmark and brought to Iraq.

"Now we have an occupying power in place in Iraq, it hasn't said how long they'll stay, it hasn't brought forward any time-plan for civilian rule, and it has set no date for general elections.   Big big chaos is coming."

A VERY SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP UNDER THE MICROSCOPE
Though, in 1960, the US was the world's largest exporter, it has since been overtaken by Germany and Japan, and has moved from being the world's largest creditor to its largest debtor.  By the early 90s, the balance of trade between the US and UK was as follows:
UK imports from US - 10%
UK exports to US - 14%

US investment in UK - $44 billion
UK investment in US - $80 billion; over 2/3 of direct UK foreign investment.

US Demographic change has seen an increase in the number of citizens over 65, putting pressure on a pension and medical care system that can't keep up. A quarter of women in their thirties are divorced by the age of 29. This is the audience for shows like Ally McBeal and Sex in the City. One child in six lives in a single-parent family. The ethnic communities that make up a disproportionate amount of the low-paid, unskilled, poorly-educated section of society is increasing, particularly concentrated in New York, Chicago, Texas and California.
The so-called 'moral majority' which the current administration is said to represent are not only of questionable morality, they're soon going to be a minority!


SO WHAT IS THE US FOR?
Providing an offensive armed forces to police the planet. Remember that most of the US political DNA was inherited from the UK.
No other country has the will, nor industrial and economic capability.
US defence spending = twice the budget deficit.
In 1988 the annual defence budget was $281 billion.
The most important US export in the future will be war, closely followed by reconstruction. Think of it like the golden McDonalds arch turned upside down. Bombs'R'Us, tanks to go, with extra fries. Iraq is just a new franchise.

The US relies on the UK to subsidise a fragile economy, not the other way round.

WHY DOES THE UK CONTINUE TO DO THIS?
The Iraq war was necessary to prove to those who have forgotten that there are still some people in the West who are prepared to fight - and die for their beliefs. The UK sees the refugee and asylum issue as proof that it still has a society worth defending. Of course there are problems: lack of democracy, poor transport infrastructure, expensive food and housing, insufficient health care and education, collapsing economy and pension provision, overbearing bureaucracy, unreliable media, law and order problems. But compared to disease, famine and drought-ridden nations which consist of toxic rubble run by armed gangsters, that still looks like paradise.

Enlightened politicians would like to see more done to address the cause of human suffering in the under-developed world. Unfortunately, developing those nations would entail growth that would hasten the destruction of the global eco-system, while putting home unemployment up.

Although most people would like the UN to take responsibility/blame for running/ ruining the planet, it simply isn't up to the task.
The EU isn't anywhere near ready to take on the job, even if it wanted to, or could afford to (It doesn't and can't).

Most US citizens don't have a passport, because they never intend to leave the US, maybe not even their own state. Educational surveys suggest that many couldn't identify another country on a map, anyway.
In the UK in the 19th century, the government offered a chance for poor, unskilled individuals to have a secure job, training, foreign travel and a pension. This system was administered by the War Department, which for various reasons is now known as the Ministry of Defence.
The 20th century saw the destruction of the British Empire, together with its' economy, social infrastructure, and political direction. There is still confusion as to what the UK itself is for, and where it is going, and that's not just about performance in competitive sport, a relatively harmless national obsession, along with the weather.

So for the foreseeable future, the US, with a disproportionate amount of poor ethnic minorities to call upon, will continue to shoulder the sheriff’s burden. And the UK will continue to support it. It's a very special relationship.
It will influence global politics until the appearance of a more effective, just and democratic force, or until the world no longer needs regulation.

Wars are expensive, they put up taxes, and hit services.  They're generally bad for the military, but worse for civilians.  Now is a good time for civilians to ask for more say in the way their taxes are spent.  There is a phrase - "No taxation without representation", which has a pleasant ring to it.

IT’S IN THE STARS, IT WAS THE WORST POSSIBLE TIME FOR A WAR, & BUSH MAY NOT LAST OUT HIS TERM
Using the 'birthtime' of 4th July 1776 at 5.10 p.m. in Philadelphia, this is an attempt to look at the 'stars' of the US's natal chart .

The US started the war against Iraq at a bad time for them and a 'good'
time for those who wanted them to fail.  The Sun was at 29 degrees of Pisces when they kicked off, that's the last degree of the last sign of the Zodiac (there being 12 signs of  30 degrees starting in Springtime with Aries).
Any astrologer would advise them not to start a war then because this position means they’ll become extremely bogged down and the war will never end for them.
Unlike Reagan, they clearly did not have a 'court astrologer' working for them!

Any successful operation should start at the beginning of an active sign (Aries, a fire sign, for example) - not at the end of a passive sign like Pisces (water).  Pisces in its negative aspect is the sign of illusion, confusion, and lies.   For beginning an artistic or musical project, or maybe a spiritual retreat, it's the perfect sign In its positive aspect, but not a war!

In the natal chart of the USA, the I.C. (the part of the sky that’s directly beneath your feet, and represents the beginnings and ends of things) is at 0 degrees of Aries.  The US started this war when the Sun was at one degree before this position, which means this war will shake the foundations of the US as the I.C. represents your sense of stability and emotional security and your sense of patriotism and homeland. If you start a major project when the Sun is almost at that point, your project is doomed to bring down the whole superstructure of the entity.

According to the natal chart of the US, it’s not a country that’s very good at winning wars!! Mars is the planet of War and is in a very weak position (it squares Neptune, the planet of confusion and delusions of grandeur - a 'square' aspect indicates an internal conflict).   This Mars square Neptune means that every time the US goes to war, it falls into confusion (cf. Vietnam). This placement of Neptune is in the part of the chart related to foreigners and foreign philosophies and religions, so the US tends to get very aggressive in a confused fashion about foreign belief systems.  (Yes, we know you didn't need astrology to tell you that!)


TRANSITS
The basic method of astrological prediction is to look at the angular relationship between the planets in the sky right now and the planets at the time of 'birth'.  Right now, Pluto, the planet of death, total transformation, massive social change, self destruction, and enormous power is making a very tense aspect to Mars and Neptune (an opposition and a square). This means that the US is using its gigantic power in a war that simply will bring them into total disarray.

The constellation ascending on the Eastern horizon at the point of birth is called the Ascendant, and in this case it was Sagittarius, the sign of adventure, travel, all kinds of foreign influences, philosophy, and an overabundance of self-confidence.  When any planet transits this point of a natal chart, i.e. the Ascendant, the entity in question goes through big changes.
When Pluto transits this point as has been the case with the US since 2001, the entity has to go through some enormous transformation akin to death. The USSR disintegrated under a similar astrological influence.

The position of Pluto in the US chart shows that the US has more power than ever before and is willing to use it (Pluto in the 1st house  of 12, each ruling a section of the heavens traditionally associated with different areas of life. The lst house rules taking initiative, the action of attack, and is the house of ego and sense of self).

Pluto in this position means that one should not use one's power for purely selfish ends as the power of Pluto, - the 'planet of the masses' - is the most intense of all the planets, and can only be used successfully for the common good. If one attempts to use it for selfish ends, everything backfires.

According to the US chart, the first thing to backfire is their economic situation.  The US natally has Pluto in the 2nd house (finances, possessions, economics).  Pluto here means that the US goes through its greatest transformations and deepest traumas in connection with their economic status. (Any difficult Pluto transit is coloured by the natal position of Pluto)


CHIRON, a newly discovered planetoid (1977) with an orbit between Uranus and Saturn, is in general known as the 'wounded healer' and represents the part of a person or entity that is damaged from the outset and which can only be healed by helping others similarly afflicted.

In the case of the USA, Chiron is in the sign of Aries, which signifies a deep-rooted self-doubt covered over by aggressive defensiveness.  It is in the 4th house representing sense of home and security, which means that the US fundamentally feels unsure of its identity (it is not a single nation or race) and covers this by aggression abroad!

Chiron in the sky at present is making a square (difficult) aspect to three planets of the US’s natal chart: first of all, throughout 2003, it makes a square to natal Chiron, which signifies that the national tendency to cover up its insecurity with aggression will be exaggerated.

It is making an opposition to the natal Sun, an aspect which usually brings a strong challenge from another party. This means that the US feels strongly challenged and again this underlines its sense of insecurity.
Transiting Chiron is also squaring the US’s natal Saturn.  Saturn is the planet of restrictions, fears, karma, and hard lessons to be learnt: it also signifies the Establishment and Government.  Chiron squaring this planet means a divided government, or some kind of deep sense of uncertainty within the government itself. 
If an astrologer saw this kind of aspect in a personal chart, she would advise the person to get some deep therapy, not turn one’s insecurity into externalised aggression.


GOING TO GET WORSE.  The sense of depression and uncertainty that the US as a nation is undergoing is about to get much worse because Saturn is about to enter the natal Sun in Cancer of the US.  Any entity born under the sign of Cancer by nature worries about the future, so the US is about to become even more neurotic. Given that it is not a nation known for its self-searching, this is bad news for the rest of the world.

The Sun in a country’s chart signifies the country’s leader, so Saturn passing over the Sun means that GB will likely lose his popularity by the end of 2003 (inshallah!).  There is likely to be a major economic crash in July/August this year (Saturn passing over Venus and Jupiter in the US chart, both of which normally signify abundance but Saturn always has a depressing effect).

Transiting Saturn will square natal Saturn in Oct. 2003, and all during 2004, which means that the crisis in government mentioned earlier will get worse.  I would bet that GB won’t finish his term of office, or at the very least, the opposition to him will really begin to make itself felt.

By the beginning of 2004, transiting Saturn will enter the 8th house of the US. The 8th house is the sector representing death or total transformation. It will continue in that sector for 2 years. 
During that time, the US will be forced to undergo some deep changes whether it wants to or not.  The 8th house is also the sector of the heavens which signifies money and riches belonging to other people. Saturn there will mean that the US will have serious difficulties in continuing to acquire the resources which it obtains from other countries (a worldwide boycott?!).

RETROGRADE
During this 2 year period, transiting Saturn will activate a very devious aspect of the US natal chart which is its retrograde Mercury opposite retrograde Pluto. A retrograde planet means that from the point of view of Earth, the planet seems to be going ‘backwards’ (in reality it is simply orbiting), and astrologically this signifies an area of life which the person or entity has great difficulty expressing.  Mercury is the planet of the mind (!) and of communication (Mercury, the winged messenger of the gods).  A natal retrograde Mercury can manifest in a range of ways, from autism and shyness to thievery and skulduggery (or a braindead president!).
Retrograde Pluto means that the person/entity is very reluctant to go through the constant ‘deaths and rebirths’ that a healthy life requires and therefore ends up holding on to a lot of deep unresolved problems until they fester to a point of self-destruction.
All of this natally is occurring in the 2nd house (Pluto) and the 8th (Mercury).  This, without any negative transit, already means that the US has serious difficulty in managing the distinction between what are one’s own, and what are other people’s possessions!!!
The transit of Saturn over this natal aspect will mean that the US can no longer avoid the results of past lies (retrograde Mercury) and dirty dealings and it will have to face serious economic problems.


The Moon in the chart of a nation represents the people. The USA chart has the Moon in Aquarius. Aquarius is the sign of humanitarian ideals, democracy and equality. The Moon in the US chart has been affected by 2 different astrological factors in the last 2 years reflecting the changes in the consciousness of people there:

First, Uranus the planet of rude awakenings, sudden shocking events, revolution, individual rights and freedom has been passing over the US Moon. This symbolises mass movements like the anti-globalisation protests and events like11th Sept. 2001.

The other factor is that the progressed Sun ('progressions' are a means of prediction in astrology in which one 'moves' each planet forward by 1 degree for each year of life of the entity or person to see where the subject has got to in its evolution) conjuncts the natal Moon, which symbolises a rebirth of the people of the US. This is the first time this astrological placement has occurred in the history of the US. The Sun represents power and leadership and when it conjuncts the Moon, i.e. the People, it gives them great power.

Along with the transit of Uranus described above, this means that the real change within the US will come from the people.

in the Garden of Eden
where writing began
where the first laws
were inscribed into stone
America has sacrificed
libraries and museums of antiquities
while protecting the oil ministry
for its records of oil fields
and the Ministry of the Interior
where the secret police dwelled
with their juicy information on every one.

The barbarians have invaded
and it is called liberation
killing mercilessly
but never counting the bodies.

History recalls the Romans slaughtering
500,000 Carthaginians to dominate
trade routes in the Mediterranean.
But the Pentagon won't count
the dead and wounded in the Iraq carnage.

It might frighten the free people
of America and upset Arabs and Europeans.
It might make some patriots
embarrassed, remorseful or shocked
by the horror of war - the burnt bodies
severed limbs, and decapitations,
the children wounded and orphaned,
the mothers bereft of their children and husbands
even the soldiers shovelled in heaps into mass graves.

Then there might be a call
beginning as a whisper and rising
to a shout and then a prayer
for the end of war
for the healing of wounds
for truces and treaties
for nuclear disarmament
for the beating of guns
into food and shelter and medicine.

Then we will awake
from the nightmare of history
and overthrow the yolk of oil and empire.

But there I go again
dreaming of a new paradigm,
an alternative universe
expecting miracles
like Moses and Aaron in Egypt
and Tom Paine in America
and Gandhi in India,
like the creation itself
and the consciousness
that imagines these visions.
