UP!

here’s what i wrote before the first gulf war.  i stand by every word i said then but feel infinitely more ashamed of my species now.  and yet, all our attempts to expose the truth and edutain the general public have finally stirred a movement which cannot be stopped at this point....

the apology to the arabs
 Fraser Clark, January 1991
We children of the evolution
·       condemn the greed and arrogance of the fundamentalist military industrial patriarchy which rules over us in the Developed West, and whose power now threatens the entire planet

·       ap0logise directly, people to people, for all the injustices that have been perpetrated in our name (and to our material benefit) against the Arabs and Muslims (and all other races and civilisations) since as far back as the Crusades, and continuing today.

while using our tax money and keeping us (and most of you) in ignorance, our governments have ‘stabilised’ the price of oil unfairly low by installing corrupt, western-conditioned sheikhdoms over your peoples, backed by a military threat that is only public for all to see when someone dares to stand against it,

·       fully admit and accept that, had the price of oil, since the Second World War,  been set at its true market value (as our rulers profess to believe) the Arab world might now be as developed as ours.

·       beg only that you, in your noble patience, and in the interests of peace among the peoples of our planet, allow us till the year 2000 to correct all injustices against you.
For which boon we hereby pledge and commit ourselves to
·       work tirelessly to inform and persuade our fellow citizens to smoothly, freely and democratically purify and reform our Evil Empire, and so begin to undo the Sins of our Fathers

·       put aside all thought of ‘national interests’ and learn to live with less, so becoming kinder, fairer, and more nature-based citizens worthy to share this beautiful planet with all our brothers and sisters.

or should they be forgiven and put out to pasture?
london, march 16, 2003.
while, in a spirit of peace and reconciliation, i personally advise forgiveness, i actually fear that the clamour from an outraged world citizenry to haul them before the international criminal court with kissinger, milosovic, pinochet, sharon and the other dinosaurs and throw away the key on humanity’s shameful, medieval past might become irresistible.

after all, they knowingly flouted the expressed will of the world and even of their own country’s electors,
RECKLESSLY trashed every civilised convention of international diplomacy, and physically endangered all humanity and the planet by unleashing the most terrible and unpredictably destructive weaponry of mass destruction ever developed upon a helpless 3rd world country.

fully informed that it was unquestionably contrary to international law, they flagrantly sought to bend, buy, barter blackmail and bully the principles of the United Nations and, when this gang failed in that, they blatantly and openly attempted to circumscribe & flout the moral, political and legal issues altogether by “using the back door”.

all i’m arguing is that some of them may have thought they wree doing the right thing, on our behalf, and we should “
forgive them for they knew not what they did”.

by the time you read this the first iraqis may be dying in agony.  be as undepressed as you are capable of because, added to the trillions of slaughtered scalps the
War Party has claimed over the centuries, these few extra die in a good and final cause:  the END of WAR as an extension of human relationships.

2 cultures are talking unrecognised languages at each other; nothing is more representative of this than bush’s remark that this is
the first wars of the 21st century”!  was ever a man so out of touch with movement of the rest of humanity?!  for this war will be the last war, and bush will be recorded (unfairly!) as History’s Greatest Schmuck.

the question was never about whether we could stop the iraq turkey shoot but whether people would go on accepting war as ‘acceptable in some circumstances’.  clearly they have spoken, are speaking and will continue to raise their voices in denial.  “
not in my name!”

an attack when, for the first time in history, a majority can see that the majority are against it, is even likely to accelerate the peace movement.  be strong!  be compassionate!  but be of stout & confident heart.

waging peace is marvellous, ISN’T IT?!
Robert Muller, former U.N. assistant secretary general
"I'm so honoured to be alive at such a miraculous time in history.  I'm so moved by what's going on in our world today.  Never before in the history of the world has there been a global, visible, public, viable, open dialogue and conversation about the very legitimacy of war.  The whole world is in now having this critical and historic dialogue  listening to all kinds of points of view and positions about going to war.
“In a huge global public conversation the world is asking --
Is war legitimate?  Is it illegitimate?
Is there enough evidence to warrant an attack or not enough evidence?”
What will be the consequences?  The costs?
What will happen after a war?  How will this set off other conflicts?
What might be peaceful alternatives?
What kind of negotiations are we
not thinking of?
What are the real intentions for declaring war?'
"We are not at war.
We, the world community, are WAGING PEACE!
Yes, troops are being moved.  Yes, warheads are being lined up.  Yes, the aggressor is angry and upset and spending a billion dollars a day preparing to attack.
”In the process, however,
new alliances are being formed.  Russia and China on the same side of an issue is an unprecedented outcome. France and Germany working together to wake up the world to a new way of seeing the situation.  The largest peace demonstrations in the history of the world are taking place!  Most peace demonstrations have taken place when a war was already waging, sometimes for years, as in the case of Vietnam.
"So this is a miracle.  This is what 'waging peace' looks like.
Through these global peace-waging efforts, the leaders of that nation are being engaged in further public dialogue, forcing them to rethink, and allowing all nations to participate in the serious and horrific decision to go to war or not.”

malaga, andalusia, spain
the original wild dog
for the record, the only time it occurred to me to even think about the possibility of terrorists is when i was standing at Airport Security and i began looking at the others around who, tho i see now but didn’t then, were probably looking at me in the same way.

since my lovely lady companion missed the plane, i find myself suddenly and unexpectedly shacked up at a peasants’ lodge for 12 euros a night in the old port area of
malaga  in andalusia in southern spain.  the rain is bucketing down.  perpendicularly.  can’t recall ever seeing that in my many years on the road, and it seems very determined and long-lasting with not a breeze to suggest the possibility of moving things on.

the insides of my darkened room flick from sky-blue to evening black as the blue neon sign of the
Pension Olimpia calls out its message and i dose for maybe an hour who’s counting, am in free time now :)

somewhat refreshed, i sit at the open second floor window, naked cos it’s at least warm, watching the perpendicular rain, staring into nothing and at an empty commercial street of closed offices and warehouses.  what to do?  go back to sleep and have a huge EARLY breakfast for a change?  read more of the
jack london book?  (a 60th birthday present from good jeff inscribed “to the original wild dog”)

3rd World War = WAR AGAINST THE 3RD WORLD

no way to read, not with this tiny neon strip in the centre of the roof.  i miss my computer and my modem for the first time since leaving ‘civilisation’ (the one about to launch the 3rd world war).  then, as i’m congratulating myself on my independence, i think:  jeezuz u r really addicted to those things!

finally, dodging a slightly abated downpour from overhanging to veranda cover up Calle Saltir, IT HITS ME LIKE A METRIC TONNE!  i could write!  i packed my travel journal at the bottom of my camel bag as usual.  it blows my mind that it hadn’t occurred to me!

with the modem, you’re reading other people or writing to them.  a journal is just between me and these whitewashed walls.

i only need to travel in a foreign land
to be a poet again!
though it’s inneresting to me on this journey

WOULD YOU QUIT YOUR DREAM JOB FOR PEACE?
WELL, ONE AMERICAN’S DUNNIT!
An important document was faxed to the desk of Secretary of State Colin L. Powell at the end of February.  It was signed by John Brady Kiesling, a career diplomat most recently assigned to the US embassy in Athens, who has served in embassies from Tel Aviv to Casablanca to Yerevan.  It was published in The New York Times and was circulating by email within 24 hours.
The letter is Mr Kiesling's notice of resignation from his "dream job" as Political Counsellor in US Embassy Athens.  The brief for the post, which he left "with a heavy heart", was to learn to understand foreign languages and cultures, seek out diplomats, politicians, scholars and journalists, persuading them that US interests and theirs coincided.
Kiesling no longer believes that the policies of the Bush Administration are in the interests of the American people and the world, indeed are incompatible with American values and interests, and squander the international legitimacy that’s been America's most potent weapon of both offence and defence since the days of Woodrow Wilson.
"We have begun to dismantle the largest and most effective web of international relationships the world has ever known. Our current course will bring instability and danger, not security"

He suggests there has not been such systematic distortion of intelligence and manipulation of American opinion since Vietnam.  The Bush Administration is making terrorism a domestic political tool, spreading disproportionate terror and confusion in the public mind, arbitrarily linking the unrelated problems of terrorism and Iraq.  Like in Iraq or North Korea, the regime is thus able to justify a vast misallocation of shrinking public wealth to the military and to weaken the safeguards that protect citizens from the heavy hand of government.  Kiesling feels that the US has become "a selfish, superstitious empire thrashing toward self-destruction in the name of a doomed status quo... The shambles of post-war Iraq will join the shambles in Grozny and Ramallah."
His experience in Greece showed that people there knew that the world is a difficult and dangerous place, and want a strong international system, with the US and EU in close partnership.  "When our friends are afraid of us rather than for us," he says, "It is time to worry."  The United States, he concludes, is no longer convincing as a beacon of liberty, security, and justice for the planet.
Kiesling also expresses his respect for Powell's character and ability. "But your loyalty to the President goes too far.  We are straining beyond its limits an international system we built with such toil and treasure, a web of laws, treaties, organizations, and shared values that sets limits on our foes far more effectively than it ever constrained America's ability to defend its interests."

Kiesling ends his notice of resignation by voicing his confidence that the democratic process is ultimately self-correcting, and hopes that in a small way he can contribute from outside to shaping policies that better serve the security and prosperity of the American people and the world we share.

It’s doubtful many people would sacrifice their career in this way for a matter of conscience.
>>> Daniel Ellsberg brought the Vietnam War to an end by his own similar revelations.  see previous
UP!s.

Men like Kiesling often make history by accident rather than intention, and rarely appear in the Index.  But this letter is already leading people all over the world to ask: WOULD YOU QUIT YOUR DREAM JOB FOR PEACE?
UP! We’re sending our gathered might to the Persian Gulf to make the point that "might does not make right," as Saddam Hussein seems to think it does.Right?

on their way to lie, finalised, on this page!

what izzit passing from my deep background essence
to rest here, fixed, in words English, on paper Spanish,
in lines like rightward leaning skyscrapers?

am i plucking coloured threads from a tapestry

THE WAR PARTY WANTS PEACE
AS MUCH AS WE DO?
BULLSHIT!
consistently, ever since the Weapons of Mass Destruction Debate began back in the 1960s, the Peace Argument was ALWAYS: UNLESS WE GET RID OF OUR OWN WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION, HOW CAN WE PREVENT EVERYONE ELSE FROM GETTING THEM?

now, silly me, and silly us, for buried in there was a
moral argument.  what we were really asking the War Party was how can we morally ask others not to do what we are doing?!  but the War Argument NEVER is and never has been about Morality, it’s always dualistic, it’s always about Defeating the Enemy

so, having immorally ignored our argument all these years until the very state has come about which we predicted, now they would have us threaten everyone else with the

as i contemplate the sunset, from the veranda of our house here in the white pueblo of Gaucin, and the diminishing fold after fold of the Sierra Madre mountain rings until their final orgasm, after thought, or exclamation mark in the rock of gibraltar, clearly visible, to arise from the sea once more, now outside ‘Europe’, and reach on to their snow- peaked and hash-famed acme in morocco‘s atlas mountains and the continent of africa, visible today from our patio though not always, it settles in on me (again!) how all this teeming clamouring silent ancient colossally endless grandeur and bountifulness of Mother Nature will survive whatever we humans do with our ‘War’.

it’s not reassuring, that’s not what i’m saying.  but it’s deeply moving.

inspiring.  in some way that’s beyond me.  beyond ‘me’!!

"THE DEVIL CAN CITE SCRIPTURE FOR HIS PURPOSE."
One wishes that those who have taken over our federal government, and hence the world, by means of a Mickey Mouse coup d'etat, and who have disconnected all the burglar alarms prescribed by the Constitution, which is to say the House and Senate and the Supreme Court, were truly Christian.  But as William Shakespeare told us long ago, "The devil can cite Scripture for his purpose."

And what remains the best-kept secret from the Second World War, because it is so embarrassing, is that
Hitler was a Christian, and that his swastika was a Christian cross made of axes, an apt symbol of a political party for Christians of the working class.   And there were simpler, unambiguous crosses on all Hitler's tanks and planes.

Again: One wishes, for the sake of the whole planet, that the people in and around the White House nowadays truly mean it when they say,
"Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us," and that they respect as children of God the losers, the nobodies so loved by Jesus in the Beatitudes, in His Sermon on the Mount: the poor in spirit, they that mourn, the meek, the merciful, the peace makers and so on.

But such is obviously not the case.  George W. Bush smirks and gloats unmercifully as he boasts of his readiness to loose more than a hundred cruise missiles, what I call "
Timothy McVeighs," into the midst of the general population of Iraq, nearly half of whom are children, little boys and girls under the age of 15.

His domestic policies, whose viciousness is peewee in comparison with what he is so eager to do to foreigners who don't look like him and talk like him, who don't have names like his, nonetheless inflict pain on those Americans of the sort enumerated in the
Beatitudes, by depriving them of decent health care and educations, and of food, shelter and clothing when times are bad.  It seems quite possible that his opinion of the American people has been formed while watching the Jerry Springer Show, which is Republican propaganda of the most pernicious kind.

But America was certainly hated all around the world long before this coup d'etat.  And we weren't hated, as George W. Bush would have it, because of our liberty and justice for all.  We are hated because our corporations have been the principal deliverers and imposers of new technologies and economic schemes that have wrecked the self-respect, the cultures of men, women and children in so many other societies.

It's that simple.

What are we to do when confronted by such hatred?  Respond to Code Red and run around like chickens with their heads cut off.
UP! 'Remnants'  allegedly 'diehard' Iraqi troops still shooting at the Americans but actually the first signs of a resistance movement dedicated to the 'liberation' of Iraq from its new western occupiers. (WEASEL WORDS TO WATCH OUT FOR DURING THE WAR)

FASCISM & THE AMERICAN ENTERPRISE INSTITUTE?
'Fascism,' said Mussolini, 'the father of fascism', 'should more properly be called corporatism, since it is the merger of state and corporate power.'
When Bush addressed the annual dinner of the
American Enterprise Institute he paid tribute to "some of the finest minds of our nation who are at work on some of the greatest challenges to our nation. You do such good work that my administration has borrowed 20 such minds. I want to thank them for their service."
The institute is America's biggest, most important and wealthiest "
think-tank".  A typical member is John Bolton, under-secretary for arms control, the Bush official most responsible for dismantling the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, arguably the most important arms control agreement of the late 20th century.  The institute's strongest ties are with extreme Zionism and the regime of Ariel Sharon.  Last month, Bolton was in Tel Aviv to hear Sharon's view on which country in the region should be next after Iraq.  For the expansionists running Israel, the prize is not so much the conquest of Iraq but Iran.  A significant proportion of the Israeli air force is already based in Turkey with Iran in its sights, waiting for an American attack.
Richard Perle is the institute's star, chairman of the powerful Defence Policy Board at the Pentagon, and author of the insane policies of "total war" and "creative destruction".  The latter is designed to subjugate finally the Middle East, beginning with the $90bn invasion of Iraq.
Perle helped to set up another crypto-fascist group, the Project for the New American Century.  Other founders include Vice-President Cheney, the defence secretary Rumsfeld and deputy defence secretary Paul Wolfowitz.
The institute's "
mission report", Rebuilding America's Defences: strategy, forces and resources for a new century, is an unabashed blueprint for world conquest.  Before Bush came to power, it recommended
an increase in arms spending by $48bn so that America "can fight and win multiple, simultaneous major theatre wars". THIS HAS COME TRUE.
that nuclear war-fighting should be given the priority it deserved.  THIS HAS COME TRUE
Iraq should be a primary target.  AND SO IT IS.  And it dismissed the issue of Saddam Hussein's "weapons of mass destruction" as a convenient excuse.  WHICH IT IS.

why i never became a terrorist/ freedom fighter
i wanted to fight for scotland’s freedom from england (the Cruel Oppressor) until i was, oh, 13.  i was raised, with the history of scotland giving me my identity  probably much like yourself?
(around 13 i became aware that, among the boring possibilities of a career, was Bohemian Artist.  this, when ranked alongside lawyer, doctor, candlestick maker and civil servant, left me really no choice, and that became my life aim, but that’s another story).

i carried a fire in my belly about all the injustices and insults which our more physically powerful neighbour had inflicted on us and on our bold leaders who had dared to fight back.
robert the bruce.  william wallace.  osama bin mcLaden you see where i’m going?

so why did i not.... ?

first of all,
religion played no part in my life until acid showed me it had, in fact, always been its guiding force, and i became a Hippy  but that’s another other story.  growing up in the ‘40s and ‘50s in a small country on the very edge of a dying Church State Religion, it was so obviously the Past (tho the Outside World hadn’t yet begun to grapple with this new generation that was us;  nor did we yet have any concept that the Outside World could change too, as it did BigTime in the ‘60s).
and secondly, apart from at football matches and such,
england was no longer daily humiliating and oppressing the scottish people.
had english soldiers been stationed in Northern Scotland to control and protect our oil  from us!  and had any kind of armed struggle been in progress (as in Ireland, say) things might have been VERY different!

Next, find a good spot by the side of the road at rush hour. And let them honk!  You'll love it!  They'll love it!  IT’S PROBABLY THE FIRST TIME WE ALTERNATIVES HAVE EVER HAD THE MAJORITY ON OUR SIDE!!  CASH IN ON ALL YOUR HARD WORK NOW!
:)
It's dead easy, and it keeps the message alive in peoples minds ...
EVERYBODY’S DOING IT.

UP! We must speak with one voice against Saddam's failure to allow opposing voices, right?

"You goddamn surrender monkeys!
We bailed you out twice, and now, in our hour of need, you don't have the guts to come to our aid..."

Slow down there a minnit, Red :)  The second time was, presumably, your famous Marshall Plan  the one to Rebuild Europe so all your corporations could dominate all its markets?  Well, that was a fookin loan, Gringo, and we in the UK only made the final repayment to you last year!
But on the old ‘
shoulder to shoulder’ allies in the War bizness, during the long, dark months from September, 1939 to Pearl Harbour December, 1941, while Germany invaded Czechoslovakia, Poland, Belgium, Holland, France and the Balkan peninsula, America did diddlysqat about what it saw as a "European civil war".  (too bad they can’t see Iraq as a ‘Middle Eastern war”!)
In the summer of 1940, when it seemed that even Britain would succumb, Churchill actually begged the US to come off the fence.  He even stated it in terms that America would easily understand: America's own security interests: if the Nazis invaded Britain, he told Washington, and get hold of the British naval fleet, then the US itself would be no match for the combined might of the
Axis powers.
The US ambassador in London,
Joseph Kennedy, repeatedly warned the British that continued resistance was futile, repeatedly urged Churchill to reach a deal with Hitler, and repeatedly told the White House that the British prime minister was a drunk and a dangerous fantasist.
And, as UPpers will know, even after
Pearl Harbour, America still failed to help Britain and only finally entered the war when Germany, standing ‘shoulder to shoulder’ with its ally Japan, actually declared war on America!!!!!
So... a little humility here, Red, old chap.
UP!

Common Ground?
I’ve decided to call the other side the War Party.  I know they’re always saying they’re as anxious to avoid war as we are, but the truth is that they accept competition/war as basic while the Peace Movement is looking for another way forward.

The Question of the Day, and increasingly of the Future, is what holds the Peace Movement together?  What (social/political) view do they all share of the World and our Purpose here?
It’s only too easy to simply toss everything into a big pile or a huge demo and say: that’s it.  It isn’t.  Not yet.  And will never be completely, any more than the
War Party is now.  Quite a few of the more superficial demands of the Peace Movement turn out to be self-contradictory.  Many of the ‘leaders’ of the smaller cultures and traditional trade unions and so on are actually demanding a bigger share in the Looting of the Planet, for example.  Many ‘leaders’ of the well-funded middle class organisations would vote to keep house prices high rather than save the planet if it came right down to a straight choice.  And those Fundamental Ecologists are going to present a problem.
But the reasons for this are as much superficiality as anything else, they’ve never really thought it through to the end.  But more and more are now doing exactly this, fuelled by every statement from the
War Party, and nothing can stop the process now except Peace.

A ‘Spiritual’ Dimension
On the big scale, I’d say the underlying motivation is in a spiritual dimension.  Before we lose the social materialists and anarchists, however, let me explain how I’m using that term.
The biggest single class of alternative demands is probably the ecological one, which stretches from people trying to save the lesser crested robins in the San Fernando Valley (I made that up) to, say,
Global Warming and GM.  What holds these extremes of locality and globality together?
Both ‘assume’ several things that cannot actually be quantified and, indeed, this is how the
Dinosaurs of the War Party, currently in the driving seat, hold their individualistic ground.  Without no evidence that would ‘hold up in court,’ the butterfly crusaders believe  call it a ‘sense,’ an ‘intuition,’ a ’feeling’ (words are important here, this is where ‘spirituality’ enters the picture) - that there is, somehow, an Overall Good Balance Within Flux with which we interfere at everyone’s peril.  Notice that this holds equally true at the Global Warming level.
Now, though our social-political materialists and anarchists can’t verbalise these ‘feelings’, they are nevertheless moved by them.  What is actually moving them?

Some ‘buried’ sense of ‘Justice’?  Where does that come from except from this mysterious ‘Balance Within Flux’ already referred to?

Human Rights?  Why?  There is no materialist argument here.  All stones are not equal.  A shell does not, in any material way, equal a mountain.  Nor are wolves and lambs ‘equal’  except in ‘God’s Eyes’.   In what sense exactly, and for what reason, should all humans be granted ‘equal rights’?
Where these, and other, values come from is this ‘sense’ we all share of a ‘
Balance,’ a ‘Unity’ in all things, a natural and healthy one which, while it does not and cannot protect all (which is an illusion) nevertheless, if trusted, respected and protected, will mysteriously produce the greatest possible equity of realised potential for the greatest possible number.
None of the above is provable.  Nor will any logic eventually and inevitably arrive there.  It is really an assumption, an inner knowledge, a spark in the human gut, a
sine qua non.  One step further up this path and we are in the realms of spirituality  that’s what I’m saying.

We Now Know That ‘Spirit’ Is The Living Planet Goddess
As Bishop Berkeley, I think, put it: “Since I can conceive of a Higher Justice which I have never encountered in this world, I have to ask whence could it have come, other than it exists and I have known it?
Materialist allies and anarchist buddies, I personally stand only one step further along this path than yourselves!  For beyond this we are into the realms of the
Official (& unofficial) Religions.
I have explored and met with many of them.  Each, like our Original List, has a part of it all.  In the end, I have held to the
shamanic view  indeed I realised I always had when I came across a proper definition of it.  Shamanism is a set of techniques to enable the Seeker of Truth to penetrate further in hir quest.  It does not deny any of the established religions - as techniques.
Its fundamental assumption is that by opening oneself to
Nature (Inner and Outer) some kind of healthy re-balancing is guaranteed, naturally!  Which is what all of us in the Peace Movement know to be true and the only valid way forward.
So we don’t need to prove these things (indeed we can’t - Logic was never devised to do so) we just ‘know’ and are prepared to trust them, more even than we trust “2+2=4”.  And we all ‘know’ that you need to be pretty fooked-up and de-natured NOT to know that everything is connected, and we are each and all a ‘part’ of Nature from which we draw our succour and without which we cannot long exist.  If you need scientific proof of this statement, try holding your breath for 5 minnits.

Have Faith!
Biodiversity’ is good, as far as it goes.  But it suggests maybe a dozen bios existing parallel when the truth is that Nature, unimpeded, represents trillions of possibilities, potential directions and adaptations, and it is in that which we Trust and have our Being.

I’d call it
Faith if Religions hadn’t so abused the word.  But it’s Faith that things will grow naturally and somehow ‘correctly’ if ego-driven individuals are not allowed to influence them for too long.

So we all share a belief that
everyone and everything must be allowed its fair and proper and natural place for ALL of us to find ours.  If this sounds trite to you, that’s good.  It proves that this is our assumption.

And it is very different indeed from that shared by the
Dinosaurs whose culture ours must replace.  Their model (dominant for so long, which is their proudest claim!) is that of the most determined and “fittest” grabbing as much as he can and fook everyone else.  They won’t always say this but that’s the bottom line and they really don’t believe that anyone sees the world differently.  They ‘naturally’ assume you must be trying on some new competitive approach.  They really and truly do!

If pressed to put it into words, they’d say that all this fine-sounding liberal twaddle of mine is merely an attempt to draw attention to myself, to sell books, to at least just make myself ‘feel good’.

Have Faith!  Stand Tall on our Common Ground!

OIL - AN INDULGENCE
WE CAN NO LONGER
AFFORD!!
Within a decade, for the same $100 billion we’re spending on this war (to say nothing of the planned TWENTY YEAR WAR beyond that), or for President Kennedy’s Man on the Moon project, the West could shift the balance of power from foreign oil producers to at-home consumers
By 2013, 30% of all new cars could be hydrogen-powered, 15% of gas stations could pump hydrogen, and we could get more than half our energy from domestic sources.

Never has the cost of oil dependence been so clear!  What’s been largely an environmental issue has suddenly become a deadly serious strategic concern.  Oil is an indulgence we can no longer afford, not just because it will run out or turn the planet into a sauna, but because IT INEXORABLY LEADS TO GLOBAL CONFLICT.

The Vision that’s needed is not Bush’s Perpetual War, but an Apollo-scale effort to unlock the potential of HYDROGEN, a virtually unlimited source of power.
·       the technology is at a tipping point
·       terrorism provides political urgency
·       consumers are ready for an alternative
·       even the oil establishment is primed for change.

Buried in the Rubble of the World Trade Center
a Peter Schwartz and Doug Randall remix
Buried in the rubble of the World Trade Center lies the myth that we can afford the dire costs of international oil politics.  It’s cost us '70s-style economic shocks, Desert Storm-like military adventures, strained relationships with less energy-hungry allies, and now terror and wars against it.
There's only insulation from the corrosive power of oil  to develop an
alternative energy resource that's readily available.
Only one of those options -
coal, natural gas, wind, water, solar, and nuclear - can provide a wholesale substitute for foreign oil within a decade: hydrogen

HYDROGEN stores energy more effectively than current batteries, burns twice as efficiently in a fuel cell as gasoline does in an internal combustion engine (more than making up for the energy required to produce it), and leaves only water behind.
HYDROGEN is plentiful, clean, and - critically - capable of powering cars.  Like manned space flight in 1961, hydrogen power is proven but primitive, a technology ripe for acceleration and then deployment.

MANY OBSERVERS already view as inevitable the transition from an economy powered by fossil fuels to one based on hydrogen.   But that view presupposes market forces that are only beginning to stir.  Even hydrogen's fans look forward to widespread adoption no sooner than 30 - 50 years from now.  THAT'S THREE TO FIVE TIMES TOO LONG.

ADOPTING KENNEDY'S 10-YEAR TIME FRAME may sound absurdly optimistic, but it's exactly the kick in the pants needed to jolt us out of our crippling complacency when it comes to energy.  A decade is long enough to make a serious difference but short enough that most of us will see results within our lifetimes.

THE GOOD NEWS is that the technical challenges are issues of engineering rather than science.  That means money can solve them.  $100 billion in today's dollars  the money being spent on this war or putting a man on the moon.

UNITE 4 PEACE
If the US attacks Iraq without support of the UN Security Council, will the world be powerless to stop it? NO!
Lawyers at the Center for Constitutional Rights have drafted a proposed "Uniting for Peace" resolution that governments can submit to the General Assembly.
It declares that military action without Security Council authority is contrary to the UN Charter and international law.

Under a procedure called "
Uniting for Peace," the General Assembly can demand an immediate ceasefire and withdrawal.  This was adopted by the Security Council so that the UN can act, even when the Security Council is stalemated by vetoes.

Resolution 377 provides that, if there’s a "threat to peace, breach of the peace, or act of aggression" and the permanent members of the Security Council do not agree on action, the General Assembly can meet immediately and recommend collective measures to UN members to "maintain or restore international peace and security." The "Uniting for Peace" mechanism has been used ten times, most frequently on the initiative of the United States.

The US would undoubtedly use its veto should the Security Council attempt to condemn and halt its aggression. But the US has no veto in the General Assembly.

The global peace movement must now consider the value of such a resolution, which should become a central proposal.  Immediate action would be needed to mobilise pressure on governments that claim to oppose the war to initiate and support such a resolution.

Countries opposed to such a war can be asked to state now that, in the event of a deadlock and an imminent US attack on Iraq, they will convene the General Assembly on an emergency basis to condemn the attack and order the US to cease fire and withdraw.
The threat of such global condemnation may help deter the Bush administration - and to a much greater extent deter its wobbling allies - from launching such an attack in the first place.

COVERAGE OF THE WAR TO COME: SOME GUESSES
KEEP IT BY YOUR TV SIDE
TICK OFF THE KARMA DURING THE WEEKS AHEAD!!

American and British forces use thousands of depleted uranium (DU) shells widely regarded by 1991 veterans as the cause of Gulf War syndrome as well as thousands of child cancers in present day Iraq  to batter their way across the Kuwaiti-Iraqi frontier. Within hours, they’ll enter the city of Basra, to be greeted by its Shia Muslim inhabitants as liberators. US and British troops will be given roses and pelted with rice  a traditional Arab greeting  as they drive "victoriously" through the streets. The first news pictures of the war will warm the hearts of Messrs Bush and Blair.  Apart from on the internet, there will be virtually no mention of the use of DU munitions.

In
Baghdad meanwhile, reporters will be covering the bombing raids that are killing civilians by the score and then by the hundred. These journalists, as usual, will be accused of giving "comfort to the enemy while British troops are fighting for their lives". By now, in Basra and other "liberated" cities south of the capital, Iraqis are taking their fearful revenge on Saddam Hussein's Baath party officials. Men are hanged from lamp-posts. Much television footage of these scenes will have to be cut to sanitise the extent of the violence.

Far better for the US and British governments will be the macabre discovery of torture chambers and "rape-rooms" and prisoners with personal accounts of the most terrible suffering at the hands of Saddam's secret police. This will "prove" how right "we" are to liberate these poor people.

Then the US will have to find the "
weapons of mass destruction" that supposedly provoked this bloody war. In the journalistic hunt for these weapons, any old rocket will do for the moment.  Bunkers allegedly containing chemical weapons will be cordoned off  too dangerous for any journalist to approach, of course. Perhaps they actually do contain VX or anthrax. But for the moment, the all-important thing for Washington and London is to convince the world that the causus belli was true  and reporters, in or out of military costume, will be on hand to say just that.

Baghdad is surrounded and its defenders ordered to surrender. There will be fighting between Shias and Sunnis around the slums of the city, the beginning of a ferocious civil conflict for which the invading armies are totally unprepared.

US forces will sweep past Baghdad to his home city of
Tikrit in their hunt for Saddam Hussein. Bush and Blair will appear on television to speak of their great "victories".

BUT AS THEY BOAST, THE REAL STORY HAS BEGUN:
= the break-up of Iraqi society
= the return of thousands of Basra refugees from Iran, many of them with guns, and all refusing to live under western occupation
= in the north, Kurdish guerrillas will try to enter Kirkuk, where they will kill or "ethnically cleanse" many of the city's Arab inhabitants
= across Iraq, the invading armies will witness terrible scenes of revenge which can no longer be kept off TV screens
= the collapse of the Iraqi nation is now under way ...

Of course, the Americans and British just might get into Baghdad in three days for their roses and rice water. That's what the British did in 1917. And from there, it was all downhill.

And meanwhile, in the rest of the world...

WITH ALL THIS SHIT HITTING THE FAN SOON AFTER THE SLAUGHTER KICKS OFF, COMES LATE NEWS THAT...

PENTAGON HAS THREATENED DEATH
TO INDEPEPENDENT REPORTERS IN IRAQ
Kate Adie, veteran BBC war correspondent, said on Tom
McGurk’s "Sunday Show" on RTE1 last night that THE PENTAGON HAS THREATENED TO FIRE ON THE SATELLITE UPLINK POSITIONS OF INDEPENDENT JOURNALISTS IN IRAQ.  Questioned about the consequences of such potentially fatal actions, a senior Pentagon officer had said:
"Who cares.. ..They've been warned."
" The Americans,”
said Adie, “and I've been talking to the Pentagon, take the attitude which is entirely hostile to the free spread of information."  WE WONDER WHY, DON’T WE, UPPIES!!
She also warned that the Pentagon is vetting journalists according to their stance on the war, and intends to take control of US journalists' satellite equipment to control access to the airwaves.

War author Phillip Knightley, reported on the same show that the Pentagon has also threatened they: “TO BOMB AREAS IN WHICH WAR CORRESPONDENTS ARE ATTEMPTING TO REPORT FROM THE IRAQI SIDE."

Wisdom is of Life

Youth embodies Idealism,
the seed which Is and which Could Be in time,
of which Youth has plenty.

But it lacks Wisdom, which lacks time.

Wisdom’s the gold dust glistering in the pan
when all the misconnections, half-assed truths
and wrong ‘lessons’ have been removed
from the effects of the experiences of Life.

The Idealism of Youth, since it lacks these experiences,
must be Divine, from outside Life, indeed often despite it,
for it’s easily reduced to Worldly Wisdom (its opposite).

An adult Idealist has managed to re-connect with that level,
but it’s not Wisdom
- for it’s often the learned ability to discern which and how much
of our ideals might (just) be achievable that marks out Wisdom.
Empowering us to push at the doors that might really open
saves time - the one thing Wisdom lacks.
For, unlike Idealism, it is of Life.

Youth! Hold stoutly to your God-given Idealism!

Wise Ones!  Push at the Doors which are openable!

Elders!  Don’t waste time!  Whatever happens,
you’re going through the Last Door
to reconnect with the Source of your Idealism!
