UP! BOMBS LOOK LIKE THE DICKS THAT DROP THEM

In London TWO MILLION people came out in the biggest political demonstration in British history.  I saw with my own eyes much of the great city of London bought to a complete standstill.  It was just incredible.  The great sea of folks swelled with a great feeling of celebration and unity.  My family and I were part of a magnificent new wave of humanity.  One badge said it all: "Another World is Possible".
Everyone was saying that the very basic principles of democracy were now at stake.  What I was saying a year ago, and often dismissed as "conspiracy theory" is now being openly discussed by people in all walks of life, printed in the British press like the Daily Mirror, and echoed by the various speakers in Hyde Park.
A month ago, I honestly don't think I could have imagined such an event. Wow!  There is truly a great hope now emerging for change in the world.  The fact that it was all around the world is a staggering thought.  The work is not over yet, but it's a great start.

The Seattle protest march was HUGE - biggest I've ever seen here - and very diverse - this is NOT just the "fringe" - it's ironic, but the sheer blatant negativity of this government's activity is coalescing a feeling of oneness in incredible numbers of humans all over the planet around issues of basic humanity and what kind of world we want to live in  I feel very uncomfortable with much of the way life on Earth seems headed these days, but sometimes I feel like we're beginning to wake up to some great realizations about ourselves, and there IS a sense that what we DO DOES make a difference - Peace, friends

In New York City, the people defied police refusal to grant a march permit by turning the upper east side broad boulevards into a sea of humanity.  Hundreds of thousands filled First Avenue, Second Avenue and Third Avenue.
On First Avenue the rally stretched from 52nd St. past 80th St.  Second and Third Avenues, and even over to Lexington Avenue, were clogged with demonstrators who were prevented by police barricades and checkpoints from reaching the main assembly site.
The police also used horses, clubs and pepper spray to carry out assaults against peaceful protesters. The National Lawyers Guild Mass Defense Committee reports that over 320 people have been arrested, and that many are being held in tight handcuffs without access to water, food or bathroom facilities.

San Francisco police estimated 150,000 people turned up at Justin Herman Plaza in mid-morning.  About 50,000 people attended an afternoon rally at the Civic Center Plaza, police said (dubble it!)  Protesters carried signs reading "Jail Bush" etc.  At least one person waved a French flag.
"We are here to say, 'Thank you, France, thank you, Germany, thank you, China, and thank you, Senator [Robert] Byrd," said David Harris, a founder of the draft-resistance movement during the Vietnam War.

Fraser, attendance was great - but here’s a factor you would grok as a producer of marathon events...TURNOVER! Most people go to these rallies for an average of 2 hours...  even late in the afternoon the side streets were streaming with people arriving as others were leaving, going thru an ebb & flow... swelling up periodically even as thousands of the early crowd had already left...
So I venture to suggest that a TOTAL attendance figure was probably at least double the organisers’ estimate!  which was probably close for attendance at any given moment.

A REAL DAY OF LOVE
I marched in Glasgow and i can't describe the joy i felt to see so many people and such a diverse group at that.  i guesstimated around 100,000 there.  the organisers (who weren't very organised) said 80,000.  Some papers actually quoted this figure.  The police said 30,000 (which the Sunday Herald described as 'simply risible') and, lastly, the BBC said 25,000!
One important thing hasn't been mentioned much. The march ended at a rally outside the Labour party conference.  Blair was scheduled to speak mid afternoon.  On the day of the march he re-scheduled to 10am to avoid speaking whilst the rally was outside.  i think we have him scared.

Dear Fraser, I'm lost in admiration at whoever chose the date for the World's Largest-Ever Peace Affirmation: Full Moon conjunct Jupiter. One simply could not choose a better combination for such an event.
But wait, it gets better: this Full Moon, a fortnight before on Feb 1st when it was a New Moon, was the Chinese New Year, and a fortnight after the Full Moon is the New Moon on March 5th, the Muslim New Year!! 
So, if we believe that a multiracial Britain is going to say NO to these racist wars, that point in time, linked to those two ethnic New-Year beginnings, was a wonderful turning-point.

BLAIR V CHIRAC: WHO’S SHOWING LEADERSHIP?
Which European leader could  nay, should  be described in these words: isolated, arrogant and out of touch with the right-thinking national and international consensus?  Here and now, in Britain in mid-February 2003, the answer is so self-evident that to pose the question at all seems ill-informed.  The object of our scorn is France's Gallic cockerel of a President, Jacques Chirac, who is threatening to use his country's UN Security Council veto to fend off a war on Iraq.
Well, my frog-bashing fellow countrymen (and your American cheerleaders), I come with sad tidings.  If you lived on the other side of the Channel and watched their television, read their newspapers and frequented their cafés, the question would seem just as bewilderingly superfluous as it does in Britain, but the answer would be quite different.
From the French perspective, it is not Chirac who is isolated, arrogant and out of step with the mainstream, but Tony Blair, the British Prime Minister  and, by implication, the US administration, whose misguided cause he is seen as championing.  And if we are talking "leadership", as Mr Blair is wont to do, then it is not British diplomacy that is winning the day, but that of Talleyrand's heirs.
Rarely can there have been two more divergent presentations of the same event than those of Britain and France after Monday evening's emergency EU summit.

"We’d just begun to breathe again after the terrible years of total embargo, after the destruction from the l991 war. There were some openings to the world, not only through the "Oil for Food" program, but also through new commercial agreements. A few of the embassies were finally reopening, and the staff of international agencies was being increased.  Baghdad airport was open again, with flights from Amman, Damascus, Cairo, and also between Baghdad and Bassora.
“Now it will start all over again; we’re here, waiting for the bombs to fall. Why don't they let us live in peace? I really don't know, but I don't believe we have nuclear weapons, though Bush and Israel certainly have plenty. So why? Can't we decide for ourselves whether or not we want Saddam?
I'm young, I want to live,  I want to study.  I love the products of the land,  I'm studying agriculture but I don't even have books with which to study".
Karim is a shy student who drives a taxi whom I met while trying to join the European parliamentarians with whom I was travelling. He invited me to his house for lunch . His family isn't poor - his mother’s an elementary school teacher.  His father was killed in the war with Iran.
We were driving past the new buildings in Baghdad: the TV centre, ministries, wide streets, bridges, overpasses, tunnels. It was  three years since I’d last been to Baghdad, and I was surprised by the changes - the orderly look of the city,the reduction in poverty in some areas.
We visited Saddam City, the poorest quarter, where the drains are still open and where there’s still misery, lack of work, lack of infrastructure.
Still, Baghdad has grown a lot in the last three years, though talking to people taught me that teachers still earn just over £5 a month, doctors £8, and all are totally dependent on food rations from the "Oil for Food" program. Our delegation concluded, however, that it’s not coming from the international community but from Iraq’s own resources, from the proceedsfrom the sales of oil which must be strictly used according to precise rules set by UN resolutions., This is deeply humiliating for the Iraqi people, says the UNDP representative in Baghdad put it.
        We passed through crowded neighbourhoods with many people shopping in shops full of goods. As I looked at the houses, shops, people, and the many children playing in the streets, I felt profoundly disoriented.. Nowhere did I see signs of aggressiveness, rather an underlying resignation.Yet our press and governments paint these people as fanatical and cruel. Despairingly I contemplated all these people, these lives, these buildings, the efforts of so many, being reduced to agonies and dust in ten days time as Bush’s promised 3000 bombs detonate like Hell across their capital.

30 Nervous European Parliamentarians
A delegation of 30 disparate European parliamentarians - we Norwegian Greens, a handful of European socialists, a Danish Member of Parliament, and many European journalists  all of us felt deep anxiety at the amount of destruction heading this way. Our common denominator was our refusal to accept this war. Some thought the UN arms inspectors needed more time, and only if or when weapons of mass destruction are actually found would they not oppose an attack, but most of us are totally against the war under any circumstances.  We’re convinced that Bush's aim is an extension of power, not only for Iraqi oil, but as a new form of colonialism in the Middle East region, looking towards Asia and the future of China too.
        To show our opposition to Saddam Hussein, the delegation decided not to meet with Government members. It was a difficult decision.  Some disagreed that a meeting would have signalled approval of Saddam Hussein's policies, and might have given us the chance to express our opposition not only to the war but also to the regime’s policies of oppression and control.

Ancient City Gates & Rigged Phone Calls
The ancient city of Bassora was on our itinerary, the centre of which was dirty and crumbling, its houses devastated by bombings during the Iran war, then the civil war between Shiites and Sunnies,and finally by American bombings. Finally?!  Children came out to greet us through ancient wooden city gates. We met Iraqi parliamentarians who, like Karim, asked why  But they knew the answer: "America wants our oil, and they want to keep us underdeveloped. How come you Europeans don't understand this? This war is also againstyou. America’s afraid of a united Europe".
Flames belched from an oil refinery in the distance. Will all the oil wells be destroyed in a war? At a maternity hospital we saw horrifying pictures of babies born deformed. The hospital director described the dramatic increase in deformed births caused by the depleted uranium in American bombs. We saw malnourished children and women staring blankly into space. When a photographer asked to check his light meter reading against a doctor's white coat, the doctor said: "Sure, take my picture, it could be the last time - when you come back we could all be gone".  This is how people are living, waiting for the bombs. But then he added: "Don't fool yourselves that we won't resist. They can’t destroy everything. And if American soldiers occupy our country I too will use a gun".

We watched Colin Powell’s UN speech in the Iraqi press room. He didn’t present real evidence. Saidi, the Iranian expert, told a press conference immediately afterwards:: "There was no proof given. The photos are of places the inspectors visited. The telephone call is a trick; phone calls are easy to rig. As for links with Al Qaeda -  Ridiculous!"

WE MUST STOP THIS WAR, MUST DO THE IMPOSSIBLE. WE MUST DISARM SADDAM HUSSEIN AS WE MUST ALSO DISARM SHARON, BUSH AND AL QAEDA. BUSH'S POLICY WILL LEAD US TO TOTAL CATASTROPHE.

In Baghdad I awoke to the Iraqi military at the window of our truck. Groggy, I looked around to see more troops waving at us at the check point to the city. A news crew approached us and asked us for an interview. We all got out of our ride and were greeted warmly by all. i could tell that these people didn't want a war anymore than we did. When the camera focused on me and I was asked to make a statement I said " My name is Kenneth Webb from America and I want to say No more War! now and forever. We are more intelligent than that and we can find a better solution than the death and destruction of that which is so
very precious: Life"  Flashing the peace sign I/we left into Baghdad.

GuilFIN: What is the mood of people in Baghdad at the moment?
Roddy Mansfield (experienced "camcorder activist" working for Arab TV): Baghdad is the friendliest most generous place in the world. When people discover you're from the UK, they don't want to take your money
for anything.
Baghdad's hotels are full of weddings every night. Sex before marriage is forbidden, and hundreds of young men who are convinced they’ll be pulverised by US air-strikes are getting married quickly to discover 'what it's all about'.
But people are also very worried. Families are stocking up on food and water and say they will fight until the last drop of blood if US forces enter the city.
The Iraqi's are a very proud people. How many people realise that the ancient city of Babylon is right here in Iraq? 
It's very british, too. British architecture and 3 pin plugs.

GuilFIN: What do people think of the US, UK and other countries actions?
Roddy: People here have no quarrel with British and American citizens.  Wherever we go, when people discover we're from London, they say with a huge smile, "Ah! Welcome, welcome, we've been waiting for you for so long...friends?".
But they have no love for our 'leaders'. I visited a kitchen in a Baghdad cafe the other day. The cook picked up a huge meat cleaver and drew it across his throat, “This is for George Bush!".
GuilFIN: How do local people regard the weapons inspections process?
Roddy: They're not interested. Iraq is a country crippled by 12 years of western imposed sanctions. Everything is 'old'. Its a broken country, it's people are sick with war (literally too!). No-one thinks Iraq possesses banned weapons. But even if it does, nobody can understand why America plans to invade Iraq but not Israel or Korea, both of whom have nuclear weapons.

GuilFIN: What impact are the worldwide protest movements having?
Roddy: All I can tell you is the Iraqis working here with us were in tears watching pictures of people from all over the world taking to the streets to help them.

A CALL FROM MEN WHO HAVE KNOWN WAR FOR THE ACTIVE DUTY & RESERVISTS TO FOLLOW THEIR CONSCIENCE
We are veterans of the United States armed forces who oppose the US war on Iraq.
We have known many wars, have many political views, yet all agree that this war is wrong.  Many of us believed serving in the military was our duty, and our job was to defend this country.  Our experiences in the military caused us to question much of what we were taught.  Now we see our REAL duty is to encourage members of the US armed forces to question why you are being sent to fight and possibly kill or die.  We call upon you, the active duty and reservists, to follow your conscience.

In the last Gulf War, we murdered from a safe distance.  We destroyed much of Iraq from the air, killing hundreds of thousands of human beings.  We remember the road to Basra - the Highway of Death -where we were ordered to slaughter retreating, indeed fleeing Iraqis.  We bulldozed trenches, burying people alive.  Depleted Uranium weapons left the battlefields radioactive.  Pesticides, experimental drugs, burning chemical weapons depots and oil fires combined to create a toxic cocktail affecting both the Iraqi people and Gulf War veterans today.
One in four Gulf War veterans is disabled.

During the Vietnam War we destroyed Vietnam from the air and on the ground. 
We killed women, children and old men.  We used Agent Orange on the enemy and then experienced its effects first hand.  We know what Post Traumatic Stress Disorder looks, feels and tastes like.  The ghosts of over two million men, women and children still haunt our dreams.  More of us killed ourselves after returning home than died in battle.

If you invade Iraq you will be part of an occupying army.  Do you know what it is like to look into the eyes of someone who hates you?  Think about what your mission really is. These are people who, like you and me, are trying to live their lives and raise their kids.  They have a brutal dictator as their leader, but they pose no threat to the US.  Who is the US to tell the Iraqi people how to run their country? Many in the US don't think their own President was legally elected.

There is no honour in murder.  This war is murder by another name.
If a thousand poor farmer conscripts die in a trench defending a town they have lived in their whole lives, it is not victory, it is murder.

Veterans will lead protests against this war.  During the Vietnam War thousands in Vietnam and the US refused to follow orders.  Many resisted and rebelled.  Many became Conscientious Objectors and others went to prison rather than bear arms against the so-called enemy.  During the last Gulf War many GIs resisted in various ways.  Many of us came out of these wars and joined the anti-war movement.

If we are to be free, there must come a time when being a citizen of the
world takes precedence over being the soldier of a nation.  Now is that time.
Our actions will profoundly impact the lives of millions of people in the Middle East and here at home, and set the course of our future.
Some people want you to obey.
We urge you to think.
Base your choices on your conscience.
If you choose to resist, we will support you and stand with you.
We understand that our REAL duty is to the people of the world and our common future.
