Since 2000, over 40,000 troops from all branches of the military have deserted.  Those who help war resisters say desertion is more prevalent than the military has admitted.   "They lied in Vietnam with the amount of opposition to the war and they're lying now," said Eric Seitz, an attorney who represents Army Lt. The Otherworld as the Unknown

"More Like A Great Thought Than A Great Machine "

from Daimonic Reality: A Field Guide to the Otherworld by Patrick Harpur. The Otherworld is always imagined as beginning at the edge of our Known World.   It can be the wilderness outside the city walls, or the unexplored regions at the edge of maps labelled 'Here Be Dragons'.

As the boundaries of the Unknown are pushed back, the planet having been largely mapped, the Otherworld is located in outer space.  Early aliens claimed to come from Venus , Mars or the Moon; later, when these planets seemed more local, less remote, they claimed to come from distant star systems such as Zeta Reticuli or the Pleiades.

Christianity sets the boundary of the Unknown at the limits of human life, a transcendent, separate reality removed from Earth.   But, in traditional cultures, the Other World Beyond Life is immanent - another reality contained within this one.

Today's Scientism recognises no Otherworld , but... Daimonic Reality has a way of subverting it.  Thus scientism constructs its own literal versions of a transcendent and immanent Otherworld - weird models of the universe articulated by astronomers and cosmologists; the latter appears in the speculations of nuclear physicists.

But the Otherworld of the nuclear physicists is merely another variant of daimonic reality .  Claiming to be seeking only to establish the "facts" of the matter, their subatomic realm and Everything that is predicated of it could be applied with equal justice to the land of Fairy.

Both worlds invert the cosy Newtonian world we inhabit.  The laws of Time, Space, Causality and, of course, Matter are ignored.  Once past the " event horizon" of a Black Hole, say the astrophysicists, time slows to a standstill ; or, once inside the black hole, it "runs backwards".  Subatomic physics introduces extra dimensions - "string theory " allows for ten dimensions compacted very tightly.  Multi-dimensionality is a staple of science fiction and ufology.

The daimons of subatomic "inner space " are called particles, although strictly speaking they aren't - electrons, for example, are both particles and waves at the same time.   They are paradoxical, both there and not-there, like faeries .  And like UFOs they cannot be measured exactly: we can calculate their speed, or their position, but not both.  This, roughly, is what Werner Heisenberg called the Uncertainty Principle, and it applies to all daimonic phenomena.  We cannot know subatomic particles in themselves; we can only identify them via their daimonic traces.

They tease their investigators mercilessly.   Each newly discovered particle promises to be the fundamental building-block of matter.  First there were atoms; then electrons, protons , neutrons; then quarks , their playful, Mad Hatterish nature evident in their Lewis Carrollian name.  I remember when there were only 4 quarks, daimonically named Upness, Downness, Strangeness and Charm (good names for UFO types).   The last time I looked into them there were more than 40!  And counting!  Ever smaller, ever more impish and less substantial - the mass-less particles - they recede from us like quasars, those enormous daimons said to be moving towards the edge of the known universe at speeds close to that of light.

As with all anomalous entities, the very act of observing the particles disturbs them.   Observer and observed cannot finally be distinguished.  Particles whose existence is predicted obligingly turn up.  If we didn't know better, we might almost say that they had been imagined into existence.  The so-called New Physicists smelled a rat long ago.  They began to compare the whole enterprise to oriental religion or to suspect that its reality is primarily metaphorical, not literal.  This is not to say that daimons cannot manifest concretely, as we have seen.   In fact, the smaller they are, the more powerful they can be, viz. the atom bomb .

Students of the daimonic - spiritualists, ufologists and so on - excitedly invoke subatomic physics as evidence that other dimensions, other worlds are possible and real.  They are encouraged to believe that one day their own favourite daimons will be acceptable to Science.   But the subatomic realm is not a literal world of facts from which they can derive support for the literal reality of their own.  It is simply another metaphor for the Soul of the World.  It is not even an especially good one: daimons prefer to appear as persons, not as impersonal, quirky little particles.  The subatomic Otherworld has its own elegance and a certain stark beauty, as the physicists are keen on emphasising; but it is grey and meaningless compared to the world William Blake saw in a grain of sand.   Indeed, while special instruments, such as the microscope and telescope, extend sensory limits, they do not increase its qualitative depth.  They produce an ersatz vision, a shadow of that true imaginative vision which alone reveals meaning.

The Einsteinian model of the universe – "more like a Great Thought than a Great Machine" , said Sir James Jeans - reverses the Newtonian model.  They are variants of each other, images of a universe whose final reality can never be known.  The Otherworld mirrors ours.  It can be benign, like paradises that reverse this world's suffering; or it can be uncanny, like the realm some tribes ascribe to witches who walk or talk backwards, wear their heads upside down or their legs back to front.   These characteristics are sometimes attributed to the inhabitants of neighbouring villages, reminding us that, to people of imagination, the Otherworld has always been in this one.  To wake, for such people, is in a deeper sense to fall asleep; to die, to live.   There may well be an end to this literal world of ours, but there can be no literal end to it because it is continuous with that other world, without end.

Information Teleported From Light to Matter

Physicists in Denmark have brought quantum communication and computing closer to reality by actually teleporting information from light to matter.

Scientists had previously teleported similar objects like light or single atoms from one spot to another over short distances in a split second, but Professor Eugene Polzik and his team at the Niels Bohr Institute at Copenhagen University have made a breakthrough by using both light and matter.

"It is one step further because for the first time it involves teleportation between light and matter, two different objects.   One is the carrier of information.  The other is the storage medium" Polzik explained in an interview on Wednesday.

The experiment involved for the first time a macroscopic atomic object containing thousands of billions of atoms.   They also teleported the information a distance of half a meter but believe it can be extended further.

"Teleportation between two single atoms had been done two years ago but only over a distance of a fraction of a millimetre," Polzik explained.  "But our method allows teleportation to be taken over longer distances by involving light as the carrier of entanglement."

Quantum entanglement involves entwining two or more particles without physical contact.

No one is likely to be beamed anywhere soon, but the achievement of Polzik's team marks an advancement in the field of quantum information and computers, which could transmit and process information in a way that was impossible before.

"It is really about teleporting information from one site to another site. Quantum information is different from classical information because it cannot be measured. It has much higher information capacity and cannot be eavesdropped on. The transmission of quantum information can be made unconditionally secure," said Polzik, reported in the journal Nature .

Quantum computing requires manipulation of information contained in the quantum states, which include physical properties such as energy, motion and magnetic field, of the atoms.

"Creating entanglement is a very important step but there are two more steps at least to perform teleportation. We have succeeded in making all 3 steps -- that is entanglement, quantum measurement and quantum feedback."

These 9/11 Conspiracy Nuts// MORE FEEDBACK

Dear Fraser,

I've read all the 911 conspiracy books etc and you're totally right in my opinion, it was angry arabs.   And yes, the buildings were designed to collapse straight down - ready
for future demolition of course.  Bad design if big planes hit you, didn't calculate on that did they... lol.

I respect you for speaking the truth and not jumping on the paranoid left wing bandwagon.  Keep up the good work.

_______,,,,_ {ô¿ô}_,,,,___fraser

>> so i took another look at one of the more recent conspiracy videos.   forget which one.  part of it kept banging on about this flash that's clearly visible as the plane hits the tower or just before.   they showed 4 different angles to prove it wasn't a reflection on the camera.  so okay there was a flash.  but so what?!  there was ZERO attempt to justify making such a fuss about an oddity of which life is full and especially when passenger planes hit towers it's sorta virgin territory.

much of the 9/11 stuff is of this order.  unexplainable oddities.   that doesn't impress me much, it's even normal when you peer at something long enough.  antonioni's Blow Up dealt admirably with this and here's another story from the '60s that pretty much sums up a lot of the 9/11 stuff.

it's to do with my friend pete lebasci.  he was busted in the '60s with 2 kilos of hashish cut up and wrapped into what we used to call 'quid deals' - that's £1 worth.   the cops knocked on his door, he answered, they pushed their way in and found these thousand or so quid deals in a big bag.  a fair cop right?   wrong!

he was accused of possession and of course dealing.  we all went along to his trial, which surely didn't help his case, i mean 20 or so hippy characters in a usually empty court room.   it looked like curtains for pete as the evidence was laid out, i mean what was he doing with a thousand separate small deals if he wasn't dealing!?

then up stood the young oppenheimer, a barrister i predicted would rise to great heights after the way he dealt with this case.   (i've actually never heard of him again).  he naturally started by stating that this was the only way his client could obtain his hash, that he was a big time smoker.   well, okay, but then he stated on the evidence and here's the 9/11 connection.

"you say you knocked 3 times on mr lebasci's door, is that right?"   "yes."  "and yet your companion says it was 4 times?"  "well, it could have been."  "you say the door was green?"   "yes".  "but other witnesses, including my client and his landlady, say it was aquamarine, do you deny this?"   "eh, no, it could have been, i'm not sure."  and so he continued through the entire evidence, questioning each 'fact' and spreading a whole cloud of doubt around every detail until you ended up wondering whether the whole thing had even happened!   he got pete off with simple possession and a fine!

oddities and doubts are embedded in everything, the more complex the event the more oddities will show up.   what i need to convince me is not a whole string of weirdness but an intelligently argued alternative version that fits the known facts.  and flashes of light when the plane hit is not that.  was this video claiming there was a target laser the plane followed for some reason?  or perhaps a spy inside flashing a gun to show where to hit?  i don't think so.

and in the end why did they need the planes at all if they had the place dynamited?   why involve dozens of other dodgy characters when all they had to do was blow up the towers and then blame it on bin laden and the mad mullahs?!  do you seriously think that wouldn't have been enough to launch an attack on afghanistan and all the rest of it?!

up!

Fraser, my friend.

It's not up to us to say what actually happened on that day - the simple truth is we don't know.  What we do know is that the official conspiracy theory has over 300 smoking guns and can be shot down by commonsense, the laws of physics and eyewitness accounts.

Justin, London.

>>  i need an alternative explanation, justin, not more 'facts'!

up!

it takes a load of courage to stand UP! against the liberal mafia, good on yer mate!

the zigster, london.

up!

Hi Fraser,

Technical nit-picking aside, I think what really bothers you is the same that bothers me - this isn't Watergate, is it?   Although conspiracy theories are always fun, this particular one seems to be pointing towards outright treason and murder - which is hardly equitable with wire-tapping.

I don't think, to be honest, that most people who subscribe to this conspiracy theory have considered what the possible consequences could be.   Namely: the entire administration having to admit that it told a pack of lies to the public and the consequent long-term damage this would do to the Republican party.

>> exaction for treason is what i've been predicting (or hoping) for years now.

In fact it could be hard for many Democrats to avoid the flak, and could bring a whole new generation of politicians into power.

>> the collapse of the Dinos' Last Stand.

The US would be forced to admit it was wrong to invade both Afghanistan and Iraq - as both were made under false pretences - and this would surely damage America's status as 'world leader'.   If the Bush administration were found guilty of having any prior knowledge or part whatsoever in the 9/11 attacks, I doubt if the damage could be any way limited.   Both the CIA and the Pentagon would be purged, and surely it's likely given the involvement of Halliburton and others, that the entire military industrial complex would be intensely scrutinised, stopped in its tracks, and brought back under proper control, which would have a heavy economic impact on each and every State in the US.

Much as you and I agree that many of those changes would be highly desirable - we'd much rather have the US under UN control instead of stompin' round in cowboy boots with a six-shooter - the consequences for the US would be devastating.

You and I know, because we've been there, that things are not hunky-dory on then other side of the pond right now.   Average income is down.  The exchange rate is down, and so is the overall trend.

You see, although I have never believed the official version of 9/11 and was in vociferous opposition of both invasions before they ever got started, I think at this point you can smell the fear.   Fear of the consequences if the whole house of cards collapses.  There will be a lot of people thinking to themselves, 'if I let the truth out it will only damage the country I love.'   You asked how, if there really was a conspiracy, it could be that so many people must necessarily have been in the know but no-one blew the whistle.... (well, a few did, didn't they).   And the answer is fear, not so much of prosecution, but of the consequences to the country, in my humble opinion.  Sure, there must be some really, really rotten apples (Rumsfeld springs to mind), but I personally have little doubt that most did what they did for what they believed was their patriotic duty, and are hanging on to that even in the face of ever increasing public doubt and criticism.

>> yes, that would have to be true if the conspiracy theory is true.   but i honestly can't imagine any american thinking that such mass murder could be a benefit to their country, can you?

However, just as the vast majority were freaked out about 'terrorism' and ready to accept anything few years back, the tide is slowly but surely turning.   The terrorists haven't really stepped up to the plate, have they - very much a 'cry wolf' situation.

So when will the day of reckoning arrive?  Who knows?   The day the average Joe realises he was sold a dud.  The day he realises the world thinks he's a sap.  It could take a while.

Jerry, Italy.

Barry Mason Has Left The Club

A dear friend and colleague over many years, Barry died on the evening of November 2nd after a long battle with cancer of the lymph glands.   He died very peacefully, with lots of family around him, and with his favourite Pink Floyd tunes playing.

He talked a lot about Samsara at the end, and his son Paul reports that his dad could see 'cosmic winds' blowing in through the window, and told him there was a time machine in the room ready for him to go.   "I know he's happy now and at last away from his suffering."

Barry Mason (1950-2006) was the founder of the Psychedelic Shamanistic Institute (PSI), a networking organisation that encouraged ethnobotany and the scientific research into cannabis and other psychoactive plants while contributing substantially to the public debate about drug reform.    Associates of PSI include:  Mathew Atha, Colin Angus, Brian Barritt, Michael Carmichael, Fraser Clark, Paul Devereux, the late John Entwistle, Paul Flynn MP, Ben Ganly, Lee Harris, Mike Jay, Howard Marks, Dr John Marks, Jonathan Ott, Dr Russell Newcombe, Richard Rudgley and Youth.

As the head of PSI, Barry carried the torch for drug reform through a series of public appearances and televised debates and documentaries on drugs and their impact on society.  He was a steadfast defender of the principle of cognitive liberty, and, when his friend Michael Marlow was charged with incitement for publishing a cannabis manual, Barry defended him by stating,
"Here we are at the end of the millennium, and we are burning books.  I said to the police, "What are you trying to do - force us into organised crime?"

Barry Mason was born into a theatrical family in Huddersfield.  His father was Frank Mason, a cousin of the renowned actor, James Mason, and his grandfather was the understudy for the actor and comedian, George Formby.   His cousin, also named Barry Mason, wrote the massive hit, "Delilah," for Tom Jones.

After his marriage to Virginia Lee, he worked to support his young family in a variety of capacities before finding his profession as an antiquarian bookseller.   With the uncanny knack of the professional to assess the importance of a book or a private library at a single glance, he became a recognised specialist in the esoteric scientific texts published during the psychedelic era.

In the late 1990s, he worked with the author, Brian Barritt, a colleague of Timothy Leary, and, in 1998, he published Barritt's autobiographical psychedelic odyssey, The Road of Excess, to critical acclaim.

We didn't see much of Barry these last few years of his illness but I personally never failed to invite him to events up in London and missed his warm, humorous and challenging assurance very much.   My best memory of him is travelling together to Amsterdam trying to set up a CannaBus weekender service for London ravers.   Like his son, Paul, I too can sense him spread his wings wide now he is free of suffering.   Get my name on the guest list Barry ok?!

Barry is survived by his 2nd wife, Ginny Mason, and his children, Paul, Carla and Nik..
