was when i stumbled upon the opening night of Celebrity Big Brother to see germaine greer walk on!  within half an hour she was going on about the iraq war, tony blair and a bit of 9/11 to 4 young people (a soopermodel, 2 male bimbos etc) all listening raptly, with the occasional question, and i thought:  jeesus, is this it?  is this how things finally change?  is germaine going to be here live on tv for the next ten days totally free to inform the masses who watch these kinds of programmes?! who could ever have predicted it?!!  she even, after about 10 minutes of deep information which i doubt the Great British masses had ever heard from their tv in their own living rooms, said: “well, let’s not get too heavy, let’s talk about something else for a while” and i thought: wow, she’s planned this carefully, better than Kitten on the last proper Big Brother who prematurely ejaculated her revolution and got kicked out.  but if she can keep going to the last 4 or 5 and can get them all into these discussions (and why not when there’s really nothing else to do?) then they won’t even be able to edit it all out.  i even called a couple of friends to tune into a possible History Being Made.

well, it didn’t work out, she got too involved, got narky about the kitchen, and finally walked out, blowing her whole chance.  the reason she gave on set, the humiliation of bridget, was ok to mount her little ‘revolution’, but WHY THE HELL DID SHE WALK OUT THEN?!!  if she didn’t go on Big Brother for the reason i assumed 9TO GET SOME TRUTH OUT), then why the hell did she go on at all?!

yes, i would go on BB.  and i’d get all those young airheads TOTALLY INTERESTED in the TRUTH so the tv company would have to throw us ALL out :)

What was it that induced so many Americans to embrace the Bush agenda?  There were many reasons, but at the top ranks Bush himself (with Karl Rove at the helm), a brilliant populist manipulator who insisted and probably believed that Providence had chosen him as America’s savoir, that he was the instrument of Providence, a leader who was charged with executing a divine mission.  God had been drafted into national politics before, but Bush’s success in calling upon an American Christianity was an immensely powerful element in his electoral campaigns.  Some people recognised the moral perils of mixing religion and politics, but many more were seduced by it.  It was the pseudo-religious transfiguration of politics that largely ensured his success, notably in Christian fundamentalist areas.

American moderates and American elites underestimated Bush, assuming that most people would not succumb to his unreason.  They were proven wrong.  People were enthralled by the Republican Party’s cunning transposition of politics into carefully staged pageantry, into flag-waving martial mass.  At solemn moments, Republicans would shift from the pseudo-religious invocation of Providence to traditional Christian forms:  In an address to the American people, Bush declared, “The government will preserve and defend those basic principles on which our nation has been built.  We regard Christianity as the foundation of our national morality and the family as the basis of national life.”

Though modern American history offers lessons in both disaster and recovery, this period will remain the language of politics in crisis.  And the principal lesson speaks of the fragility of democracy, the fatality of civic passivity or indifference; American history teaches us that malice and simplicity have their own appeal, that force impresses, and that nothing in the public realm is inevitable.

Keep up the good work old son you gave me a scare when you talked about quitting in the last year  - i couldn't do without my weekly dose of media insurgency.

In your Dec 12 issue you talked about the 'quislings in Iraq' meaning the Iraqi National Congress and others working with the American invasion forces.  Quisling is an apt word for them, but much more apt than you suggest.  Quislings weren't Scottish barons who worked with English invaders; but Mr Vidkun Quisling was a Norwegian politician who formed the fascist National Union Party and went on to become president of Norway under Nazi occupation (1942).

In 1945 he was tried for treason and executed.  For members of the Iraqi National Congress a trial before execution must seem luxury indeed.  Everyone agrees the insurgency in Iraq is gaining momentum in the build up to the 'elections' (American usage). 

We may all owe our very existence to Norway's WW2 insurgents.  In the daring Telemark Raids a small group of Brit-backed Norwegian freedom fighters destroyed Hitler's heavy water plant.   Indeed, against incredible odds, they returned when it was rebuilt to do it a second time!  Thereby preventing Hitler from winning the race to build nuclear weapons... I wonder if Adolf exclaimed: "Those damn terrorists!"?

Not only does America now seem to be in the unfamiliar position of being outnumbered, but the Iraqi police force and military that it has formed to bolster its numbers on the ground are widely reckoned to be riddled with anti-American spies and informers.  How else were the insurgents able to strike a dinning tent in an American compound with such apparent ease?

The result of this unnerving situation?  Apparently no less than a major change of emphasis in the Pentagon's defence budget from advanced high tech projects for Air Force and Navy towards more money for the Army (Washington Post, January 5).  Fun though it may be to sit at the controls of a killer computer game and 'precision' bomb from sea & sky it seems you can't filch oil without getting your hands dirty.  

This bodes well for Norwegians.  With their massive stocks of oil they must be next on the hit list when the Middle East runs dry.  Though not yet located on the Axis of Evil, they must have noticed the looks they've been getting.  And they thought not joining the EU was their decision.  I'm sure Blair and the rest would really show them a think or 2 about quislings when the Stealth Bombers arrive: "Sorry guys, not in EU, nothing we can do - darling Bush assures me it's best you just hand over the black stuff."

But a fair fight?  Troops on the deck, insurgents in the mountains, terrorists at dawn?  I reckon they'd have a chance.  Who knows, we Brits might even be on their side again by then.  We never really liked the Yanks or that Blair bloke did we?  Just served a purpose at the time right?  Same as General Motors building trucks for the blitzkrieg and bomber engines for the blitz; and IBM building business machines for the Holocaust.  If the price is right. If the price is worth paying.  Very fluid thing the old theatre of war, as CIA man Saddam would tell ya: “It's partner found and it's partner lost and it's hell to pay when the fiddler stops."

Do Honeybees Consciously Inhabit
6-Dimensional Quantum Space?
When a honeybee finds a source of food, it returns to the hive dancing with "joy."  Actually, the dance of the honeybees has a serious purpose.  It tells other bees the direction and distance to the food supply.  It is a remarkable dance relating the angle of the direction to the food supply with the position of the sun.  There is a "round dance" for nearby food and a "waggle dance" for more distant food.  These dances constitute a real language.  You can make a little robot bee, program it to dance, and the real bees will understand it and fly off in the right direction to get the food.

Ever since the biologist Karl von Frisch discovered the dance of the honey bees in the 1920's, biologists have wondered how the honey bee with its little brain could "talk" in such an "intelligent" way.  Professor of Mathematics Barbara Shipman has proposed a new and very controversial explanation.

Barbara's father does research on the physics of honeybee behaviour for the Department of Agriculture.  When she was 9 years old, he told her about the dance of the honeybees.  She went on to get her Ph.D. in mathematics at the University of Arizona, her thesis being on the dynamics and geometry of spaces called flag manifolds.  Then, after moving to the University of Rochester, she saw something that she did not expect.  In the geometry of a 6 dimensional flag manifold, she saw the dance of the honeybees!  To be more specific, she saw a family of curves, some of which traced the round dance and some of which traced the waggle dance.  Without looking for it, she had stumbled upon a mathematical model for the dance of the honeybees!  The model even predicted that the dance would come in two forms, waggle and round.

But why should a 6 dimensional flag manifold have anything to do with honeybees?  Surely, their little brains do not think in 6 dimensions.  What could be going on?  Up to this point, Barbara was on safe ground.  Nobody could argue that her model did not match the dance.  It clearly did.  Just look at the curves in the manifold and watch the bees.  It was the same thing.

But Barbara wanted to understand why the model worked, and to do so, she proposed a daring explanation.  Physicists use these same flag manifolds to understand some of the phenomena associated to quarks, fundamental particles two of which are the building blocks of ordinary matter.  Barbara believes that this is not an accident.  She proposes that bees have a "sixth sense" that gives them direct access to the quantum world of subatomic particles!

Experiments have shown that the dance of honeybees is sensitive to the Earth's magnetic field.  One possible explanation of this is the presence of a magnetic substance in the bodies of bees.  Further experiments indicate quantum effects in the reaction of bees to magnetic fields and prompt Barbara to go even further: "Ultimately magnetism is described by quantum fields. I think the physics of bees' bodies, their physiology, must be constructed such that they are sensitive to quantum fields, that is, the bee perceives these fields through quantum mechanical interactions between the fields and the atoms in the membranes of certain cells."

Barbara's hypothesis that honeybees have direct access to the quantum world would be revolutionary in both biology and physics.  It would violate a sacred principle in quantum mechanics, that the process of measurement changes the very phenomenon you’re measuring.  According to flag manifold geometry, a dancing honeybee is interacting with the quantum world without disturbing it and using this information to organise its dance.  Is it possible that honeybees have found a way to do this?

In it you will find an article called Quantum Honeybees written by Professor Adam Frank of our Physics Department. It is a very informative and readable account of Barbara's work. You might even be lucky enough to catch an interview with Barbara herself on National Public Radio's All Things Considered. In her own paper on this work, A mathematical foundation for the dance language of the honeybee, Barbara has had a rare privilege. Among the papers that she cites, there is one by her father, Investigating bee behaviour from the standpoint of fundamental physical principles.

Echoes All The Way UP!
To The Hallowed Halls Of Congress!

Something historic happened this month.   For the first time since 1877 a member of the House and a member of the Senate stood up together to object to the outcome of a presidential election.
        This is the first step on a necessary road toward making sure that everyone is allowed to vote and that every vote is counted (something we did not see in 2000 or 2004) so the next time around ALL of us can be confident, when the election results come in, that they reflect the will of the people, not the whim of mechanical error and human obstruction.
        Unlike 2000, when the black members of Congress were told to sit down and shut up, this time a Senator had the courage to stand with them, as the law requires, to force Congress to go back to their separate chambers to discuss and debate the issues surrounding the vote count. 
Senator Barbara Boxer rose to the occasion and stood with Ohio Representative Stephanie Tubbs Jones and 29 other Representatives "to cast the light of truth on a flawed system which must be fixed now."  The ensuing debate, at times, became a debate over the fact that we, the people, would dare make the attempt to protect our democracy.
Coming out of the gates like this in the very first week of session sent a strong message that we are not going to be pushed around.  If the Republicans think the next 4 years are going to be a cakewalk, they've got another think coming.  With Michigan Representative John Conyers leading the charge, we showed them something not seen in over 120 years.  And we're just getting started!
        Congratulations to the tens of thousands of you who called, faxed, and e-mailed Barbara Boxer and other senators.   You’ve shown the world, with the strength of your convictions, that the movement toward a truly representative democracy will not be stopped in its tracks.  Yesterday's actions will be marked by history books as a turning point for the electoral process and for a Democratic Party that has for too long sat back and taken it on the chin.
        Your voices have echoed all the way up to the hallowed halls of Congress!

Welcome Congress Back with a Demand to Defend and Expand Democracy

History was made on Jan 6 when Representative Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-Oh.) and
Senator Barbara Boxer (D-Ca.) objected to the acceptance of the electoral college votes from Ohio.

Organizing, protesting, lobbying and massive caller turnout led to their action, with support from over 30 Representatives and more than 12 Senators. And a public spotlight was shone on this critical issue.

None of this would have happened if not for the actions of literally hundreds of thousands of people who flooded Capitol Hill with emails, calls, faxes and visits.

We need to keep the pressure on. When Congress reconvenes to begin their work on January 24th, let's let them know all throughout the week that we are here for the long haul and urge them to:

Absolutely Astonishing
Hi Fraser,
Blackboxvoting.org were asking people to download the film Votergate from www.Votergate.tv - so I did (well to be honest as AVI files tend to be pretty big I used e-mule which runs in the background... )
 
It's about Diebold - the company that make the voting machines used in a lot of states.  Another real eye-opener.  Un-be-fukkin-lievable.  Total, rampant incompetance - at all levels.  Absolutely astonishing.  In the real world... no, I can't say any more, the whole thing is simply too ridiculous for words.
 
However, I did think it interesting that Microsoft allowed their logo and programs (Access) to be shown (they don't usually, do they).  Wanna bet they were pissed because state governors were giving 50 million dollar contracts to a bunch of hicks without offering it for tender?  I bet the mafia were wringing their hands because they hadn't thought of it first (always assuming...)
 
Anyway, nuff on that.
 
Lastly, there was a highly respected journalist from the New Yorker on BBC world news this evening stating that there were US agents in Iran and that the US was about to invade - again on the pretext of 'noocoolar weppuns'.  How?  By going via the Pentagon which doesn't have to report to congress, instead of the CIA which does.  Hence Bush's statement earlier about having a “mandate to continue” - which otherwise didn't make much sense.

Is Iran Next?
The United States has been conducting secret reconnaissance missions inside Iran to help identify potential nuclear, chemical and missile targets, according to Seymour Hersh in Sunday's New Yorker. Hersh says the secret missions have been going on at least since last summer with the goal of identifying target information for three dozen or more suspected sites.

"The civilians in the Pentagon want to go into Iran and destroy as much of the military infrastructure as possible," Hersh quotes one Pentagon consultant as saying.

One former high-level intelligence official told The New Yorker, "This is a war against terrorism, and Iraq is just one campaign. The Bush administration is looking at this as a huge war zone. Next, we're going to have the Iranian campaign."

Lt. Gen. James R. Helmly, chief of the Army Reserve, wrote in an internal memorandum to the Army's top uniformed officer that the Reserve had reached the point of being unable to fulfil its missions in Iraq and Afghanistan and to regenerate its forces for future missions.

Camp Justice
"Camp Justice," is one of the secret little hideaway resorts the US administration has set up, or contracted out for, on prime global real estate to hold "high value" prisoners in the war on terror.  Named by someone who must have had a yen for the Orwellian, it is part of an offshore Bermuda Triangle of injustice set up by the Bush administration - two interlinked prison systems, in fact; one run by the Pentagon and the other by the CIA, both meant to keep prisoners and practices far from the prying eyes of the American public and its court system; both, as it now turns out, anchored in that jewel-in-the-crown, Guantanamo (or Gitmo to devotees) - a grim prison camp that’s close at hand, U.S.-controlled, and yet - or so Bush officials hoped until the Supreme Court ruled otherwise last year - beyond the reach of our courts.  On military bases like Diego Garcia and in special military- or CIA-controlled prisons like Guantanamo, the "war on terrorism" was to be carried to its informational climax by whatever methods American intelligence officials felt might "break" whatever prisoners they had.

Urgent Call From Mayan Elders Of Guatemala

This message is not meant to induce fear, to the contrary, it is a call for bravery and for action.  The elders are concerned about what has been presented in their recent divinations and they call to all humanity to warn their leaders and to work very hard at a spiritual level to prevent the impending destruction.   This message, verified and brought forth by various Mayan elders in Guatemala, is for all of humanity.

The hurricanes in the US and the earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia have been warnings and we must now pay attention or the possibilities of floods in Europe, Los Angeles, earthquakes and other efforts of the mother earth to awaken us will manifest quickly.

A specific call for people around the world to join in prayer, meditation or whatever to unite on January 18th was widely observed.   There were many major ceremonies in the Mayan communities for this purpose.  

An open invitation is extended to humanity that wish to join the Mayan people for the Waxa'qib B'atz' ceremonies on February 12th in Guatemala .

Again, this is a strong message, not meant to drive us to react in fear, for this will only negatively impact the level of destruction and our own circumstance.   This is the opportunity for humanity to rise to the occasion and come together along the strong lines that unite us and overcome the obstacles that divide us.

Consciousness And Its Contents Are All That Exists

I believe that consciousness and its contents are all that exists.  Space-time, matter and fields never were the fundamental denizens of the universe but have always been, from their beginning, among the humbler contents of consciousness, dependent on it for their very being.

The world of our daily experience - of tables, stars and people, with their attendant shapes, smells, feels and sounds - is a species-specific user interface to a far more complex realm whose essential character is conscious.  It’s unlikely the contents of our interface resemble that realm in any way.  Indeed the usefulness of interfaces requires, in general, that they don’t.  For the point of such as the Windows interface on a computer is simplification and ease of use.   We click icons because it’s quicker and less prone to error than editing megabytes of software or toggling voltages in circuits.

Evolutionary pressures dictate that our species-specific interface, this world of our daily experience, should itself be a radical simplification, selected not for the exhaustive depiction of truth but for the mutable pragmatics of survival.

If this is right, if consciousness is fundamental, then we shouldn’t be surprised that centuries of effort by the most brilliant minds has produced no physicalist theory of consciousness that explains how mindless matter, energy or fields could be, or cause, conscious experience.

No one would have believed that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinise the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water.  With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this globe about their little affairs, serene in their assurance of their empire over matter.  It is possible that the infusoria under the microscope do the same.  No one gave a thought to the older worlds of space as sources of human danger, or thought of them only to dismiss the idea of life upon them as impossible or improbable.  It is curious to recall some of the mental habits of those departed days.  At most, terrestrial men fancied there might be other men upon Mars, perhaps inferior to themselves and ready to welcome a missionary enterprise.  Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us.  And early in the next century came the great disillusionment.

Britons Rank Israel 'Worst Country In The World'

British people rate Israel as the country least deserving of international respect, as well as one of the world's "least democratic countries," according to a recent survey.

Research company 'YouGov' carried out a survey for the British Telegraph, asking Britons to rate almost two-dozen countries on the basis of 12 different criteria.  The respondents were required to rate the 3 best and 3 worst countries according to those criteria.

Israel was ranked number one country where British people would least like to live or visit on holiday.  Out of several other criteria measured, only Russia scored lower overall than Israel.

Israel gained the title of the world's least beautiful country and New Zealand the prettiest.

In addition, Israel was rated the most unfriendly country after France and Germany.

Australia, New Zealand and Canada were among the most favoured countries.

Results regarding America were mixed, with 19% of Britons regarding the US as "most deserving of international respect," and 25% rating it as "least deserving of international respect."

More Britons ranked America as the least safe country than those who thought the same of Israel, Egypt or South Africa.

not a terrific idea.  An example from history: Mongol warriors were required to wear a silk tunic when they went into battle. The preferred weapon of the period, the arrow, flies in a spiral path, even as it penetrates the body. Pulling the arrow out directly greatly magnifies the damage done by the arrow's penetration. The silk is carried into the wound and permits the arrow to be extracted along it's path of entry, minimizing the damage.  An immediate and direct disengagement might seem compellingly attractive, but it ain't smart. Iraq is a good case  in point. Despite having gone to war in Iraq for all the wrong reasons, on cooked cherry picked intelligence, The "Coalition" can't just pick up and leave.  At the moment the only shot the Iraqis have is if the West's "mythic history" ("We hold these Truths...etc.) can overcome it's actual history (as currently practised by Bush  and Co.) I must confess to a partisan bias on this topic, after all it’s me whom the present Islamic triumphalists have expressly declared their intention to expunge from history. The same me who was the target of the Soviet triumphalists and before them the Nazi triumphalists and before them the Christian triumphalists and before them the Pagan Roman triumphalists and before them the Babylonian triumphalists. It's taken more than three thousand years, but I finally figured out that it's the triumphalism that's the problem and it isn't any better when/if I practice it too. Sad to report there's a big upsurge of just that amongst my fellow tribesmen lately. (The same triumphalism the Hasmoneans practised, against which Isaiah {among others} railed but nevertheless found it's way into Talmudic Judaism)

The United States is considering setting up an elite squad of assassins to target leaders of the Iraqi insurgency, according to reports.

Newsweek Magazine said the Pentagon is drawing up possible proposals to send US special forces teams to advise, support and train hand-picked Iraqi squads to target the rebels.  The ploy has apparently been called the "Salvador Option" after the strategy secretly employed by Ronald Reagan's administration to combat the leftist guerrilla insurgency in El Salvador in the early 1980s.  In that instance, the US government backed "nationalist forces" that hunted down rebel leaders and their supporters.

The plans appear to be a sign of the increasing frustration.  Direct actions, like the emptying and trashing of Falluja (300,000 population), have had little more effect than spreading the disease more widely.

Newsweek cited an unidentified senior military officer. "What everyone agrees is that we can't just go on as we are.  We have to find a way to take the offensive to the insurgents.  Right now, we are playing defence.  And we are losing."

The retired four-star general, Gary Luck, who has just arrived in Iraq to conduct a rethink of tactics, has been assumed to be there to plan a withdrawal, but can you imagine Bush doing that before he’s further screwed the future up with the Salvador Option?!  Gen Luck is due to report back to Donald Rumsfeld, within a month.

The Iraqi elite squads would most likely be made up of Kurdish Peshmerga fighters and Shi'ite militiamen, and could even operate across the Syrian border, the report said.  Though the mag says it “remains unclear” whether they’d be used for assassinations or in so-called snatch operations, capturing targets and taking them to US bases for interrogation, anyone with any savvy at all can see what will happen.

According to Newsweek it’s also still unclear which part of the US government would take responsibility for the squads.  (ANYONE BUT BUSH!)  Covert operations have in the past been run by the CIA but Rumsfeld’s defence department has been seeking to build up the Pentagon's intelligence operations.  Many in the CIA are said to oppose the plan, which would expand the role of the US special forces into undercover missions.

The interim government of prime minister Ayad Allawi (1000% guaranteed to win the election) is said to have given the proposal strong backing.

POST-APOCALYPTIC PAGANISM

Revelation and Revolution
The term “Post-Apocalyptic” has meaning on two levels: explicit and implicit.

The explication: The word “apocalypse” literally means “revelation” - information or understanding received from a spiritual source.  In this sense, Post-Apocalyptic Paganism refers to a new worldview that’s emerging as a result of the experiences many people have had since the 1960s, of a higher, truer, more holistic way of understanding reality than is offered by the dominant paradigm of Western Civilisation.

The implication: In common usage, the term “apocalypse” implies a clash of opposing forces that heralds the end of an epoch of human history and presages the beginning of a new and different world.  In this sense, Post-Apocalyptic Paganism is conceived of as a sketch of the new lifeways that will emerge after the smoke and dust have cleared from the cataclysmic changes looming just over the horizon of the future.

In short: “apocalypse” means both revelation and revolution, and we mean to allude to both senses of the term.


The Psychedelic Revolution
In the first or “explicit” sense, we acknowledge the validity of the experience that a sizable percentage of the “baby boom” generation went through during the decade of 1964  1974, with resounding echoes that still vibrate though human culture across the world.  Often referred to as “the psychedelic revolution,” this collective spiritual awakening was, we submit, as valid and important an event to human society as the advents of Buddha and Christ or the discoveries of Galileo and Copernicus were to previous generations.

This Rainbow Revelation was a widespread experience of expanded consciousness in which the artificial limits of the finite ego were transcended and a more inclusive glimpse of Reality was attained by millions.

The wave of reaction and persecution that followed was in many ways a parallel to the violent suppression of the early Christians by the Roman state, and the later persecution of  “heretics” and “witches”  by the Romanised Christians.

The counterculture that grew out of the revelation of the 1960s has been suppressed by the Amerikan Empire in a ruthless campaign of extermination that amounts to virtual cultural genocide.  Like the early followers of the Nazarene Carpenter, participants in the psychedelic revelation have been murdered, imprisoned, and driven into exile.  But, despite the dominant culture’s attempts to stamp it out, the Rainbow Vision still exerts a powerful appeal throughout the world.


The New Paradigm
In the second or “implicit” sense, we refer to a collective recognition among many of those who were affected by the Revelation of the 1960s, that we are on the brink of a new paradigm that’s emerging into human society - a new gestalt consciousness that will transform human social and planetary relations radically, ushering in a worldwide voluntary/ cooperative economy and wiping out the authoritarian structures that have gripped the world with an iron hand for the last six thousand years.

A complementary recognition is that the world is on the brink of unprecedented changes which promise to shake the very foundations of reality as we have understood it heretofore: political, social, environmental, military, scientific and technological realms of human life are all trembling on the brink of massively transformative changes.

The events that are already underway are cloaked by serious threats to the continued security and survival of the human race and other life on this planet.  Yet behind the dark clouds that appear on our near-future horizon, the prescient among us can discern the emergence of a new paradigm that could provide us with safe passage through the crises that lie ahead, into a new world of peace, health, and unity for all sentient beings.  The seeds of this new vision were sown by the Rainbow Warriors of the ’60s, and the emerging paradigm reflects many of the elements of the worldview known as Paganism that predominated among pre-industrial peoples.

How might we utilise the revelation of our time, to make the life-affirming revolution a reality?  This is the question we propose to discuss in this paper.  The answers we will propose to this question will involve the synthesis of spiritual and political energies which we are calling Post-Apocalyptic Paganism.


Paganism
“Paganism” is a term used in widely disparate senses.  Generally, it refers to the traditional religious beliefs of indigenous peoples.  Here, we will use the term to describe an approach to spirituality that is based on reality - on Nature and Life - rather than on abstract concepts of Deity.

The word “pagan” is etymologically related to the Latin words pagus, the countryside or rural areas, and paganus, a peasant.   The term came into use during the European “Dark Ages” as a pejorative reference to the rural population that maintained allegiance to the “old religion.”

The word was used by Roman Christians who’d established their new religion by force, and whose centre of strength was in the cities.  Christianity was the mandatory religion of the urban population and the ruling classes, and Paganism was the traditional religion of the rural peasants who rebelliously adhered to their traditional ways.

The ancient Pagan religions included a wide variety of beliefs and practices in the different lands and cultures of the world, but certain common themes united them and serve to distinguish them from the imperialist, patriarchal religions of the Judeo - Christian - Islamic (JCI) tradition.  These common elements - deification of Nature and the feminine, and an animistic and pantheistic respect for Earth and all living things - have been identified with by numerous modern groups that have chosen the terms “pagan” or “neo-pagan” to describe their religious beliefs.

Instead of basing their spirituality on an abstract deity defined as separate from nature (a “creator” distinct from the “creation”), Pagans relate to the presence of life in all of its varied manifestations as an actual, perceptible presence of Deity.  In the words of William Blake, “all that lives is holy.”


The Gender of Deity
Pagan spirituality differs from that of the Judeo Christian Tradition, firstly, in the idea of gender.  The JCI deity is conceived of as male, and the culture that has developed from this ruling archetype relegates women to a social status of subjugation to males.

In contrast, Pagan ideas of deity are focused on the idea of the female as mother, the source and nurturer of the universe.  Ancient Pagan cultures honoured women and tended to be matrilineal (i.e. family descent was traced from mother to daughter) and matriarchal (i.e. collective decisions were facilitated primarily by women).

JCI-dominated cultures are largely hierarchical, authoritarian, and competitive.  They are characterised by distinct class divisions - a small ruling class that enjoys wealth, power and privilege and a much larger disenfranchised class that lives in poverty, toil and drudgery.  These conditions exist in all of the modern industrialised nations, “capitalist” and “socialist” alike.

In contrast, Pagan cultures were characterised by common tillage of lands, community sharing of resources and labour, and a generally egalitarian and humane social attitude.

A similar distinction can be seen in attitudes toward sexuality.  JCI-based cultures repress sexuality and malign it as “sinful,” while Pagan cultures tended to view sexual energy and activities as sacramental, as manifestations of the holy creative life force.

Attitudes toward nature show the same contrast.  Urban oriented JCI faiths teach that Man is Master, Conqueror and Owner of the Earth, of nature and other living beings, having the right to use, consume, and destroy them at will.

Pagans respect nature as the embodiment of the Goddess, the Great Mother, the womb from which we spring, source and substance of Life.

The JCI-based belief that nature is created for Man’s use laid the groundwork for the Western scientific/ technological view of nature as an inert, lifeless collection of “raw materials” and “resources” rather than a living Being of Whom we are an integral part.  These attitudes have led to the arrogant and thoughtless destruction of the environment, a continuing pattern throughout the history of Western civilization that now threatens us with global catastrophe.

Mother Earth and Father Sun
The symbols that relate most universally to Pagan spirituality are Mother Earth and Father Sun.  Through these twin archetypes we will examine the key ideas of Post - Apocalyptic Paganism and its relevance to the major struggles of our time.

The Pagan idea of Nature as Mother is rooted deeply in our language and culture.  It has survived despite its suppression by the dominant JCI archetypes throughout the thousands of years of their reign.

The Latin word mater, mother, shares a common root with the English words “matter” and “material,” the substance of the physical world.  “Mother Earth” and “Mother Nature” are common idioms which reflect our instinctual recognition of Gaia, the Earth perceived as a living being, and the living material presence of the interconnected web of life, which was personified by the ancients as the Goddesses Isis, Diana, Persephone, Kali, etc.

In a larger cosmological sense, the Great Mother includes all matter in the universe.  She was personified by the ancient Egyptians as the Goddess Nut or Nuit, goddess of the night sky whose body is composed of all the stars of infinite space.  She represents the Pagan view of the universe as a conscious entity, alive in all of Her parts, “in whom we live and move and have our being” - in contrast to the Western view of the cosmos as a random collection of blind forces and inert elements.

Paganism is in agreement with modern science in analysing the universe as being composed of matter and energy. It goes on to personify Matter (Mother) and Energy (Father) as transcendental archetypes with real, living presence - not separate from ourselves, as the JCI “God” is conceived to be, but forming the very substance, life, and consciousness of our human selves and all other life.

As the Earth and Matter are related to as Mother, so the Sun and Energy are Father.  The Sun is the creative source of all life on the planet; all forms of organic life depend on solar energy for sustenance and survival.  The beams of solar force that enter the “matter” of Earth are related to in Pagan theology as manifestations of the Father, phallic beams of creative love that quicken the womb of the Mother.

The Pagan conception of Our Father the Sun as the transcendental worshipper and lover of the Earth / Nature Goddess provides a guiding archetype for a reformed masculinity free of the taint of patriarchal abusiveness.  An equality exists in the relation between God and Goddess, Father Sun and Mother Earth, Matter and Energy.  They are equally vital constituents of our being.

In contrast with the JCI view of “matter” as “evil” and “God” as “good,” the Pagan views both archetypes as holy - the relation between them defined by mutual love, desire and worship.

As well as our own Sun, centre of the Solar System in which our planet Earth is located, the archetype of the Solar Father includes the energy that pours forth from the core of every star throughout infinite space and eternal time.  In this sense He is known by the Egyptian name Hadit, consort and mate of Nuit.

Nuit is the Star Goddess whose body stretches to the limits of the cosmos; Hadit is the living energy of every individual star throughout Her infinite Self - and the energy at the core of every atom that makes up the matter of the universe.

On a cosmic scale, it could be imagined that the universe came into being as a result of the passionate love of the archetypal couple - the “big bang” that gave birth to our universe, a cosmic orgasm.

The relation between God and Goddess forms a model for human social relations - love, mutual respect, recognition of the innate divinity of the other - and prescribes the supreme method of religious worship: the sacrament of sexual love - for every woman is an incarnation of the Goddess, every man of the God.

The human body is a temple (“the temple of the Holy Spirit” as the Christian Bible says in I Corinthians 6:19), and the organs of generation are the sanctum sanctissimum, the holiest inner sanctuary of that temple.


Unity vs. Duality
The metaphysical worldview of the JCI tradition holds that the life and consciousness that we know as our “self” is absolutely separate and distinct from the creative source or “God.”

Paganism, like the philosophies of the Orient, teaches instead that the Creator and the Creation are one.

In the Pagan worldview, the universe - all that is or can be - is in reality one being, alive and conscious - both in its totality (the Macrocosm) and in each of its discrete parts (the Microcosm).  The appearance of separation is an illusion caused by the focusing of consciousness through the limited media of the physical sense organs.

On the universal or Macrocosmic level, there is a universal consciousness (the “world soul” of Hinduism) that exists throughout, but is not limited to, all of time and space.  This aspect of the life of the universe that is conscious in and as itself is the “I Am That I Am” of the Hebrew Bible.

Each individual being shares a common identity with this Universal Self of All Life.  The individual human self is not a distinct and separate creation, as JCI tradition supposes; it is a “cell” of a larger organism - as the cells of our bodies are individual entities on their own level, yet are integral parts of the whole body.

The belief in the absolute separateness of the ego constitutes “idolatry” -  the worship of a “false god,” an unreal image.

The worship of the Ego and the attempt to establish it as a permanent fixture constitutes “Black Magic” - corrupt spiritual practices whose sole aim is the acquisition of ego - cantered power.  These practices often involve blood sacrifice rituals, which are prevalent in the mainstream religions of the JCI tradition as well as in their evil and averse counterparts like Satanism.  Blood sacrifice is an essential part of the early Hebrew religion (see the Book of Leviticus for evidence of this), and it forms the symbolic basis of the Christian doctrine of the “vicarious atonement” - the sacrifice of Christ as the “lamb of God,” a “ransom” to redeem condemned souls.  (“Are you washed in the Blood of the Lamb?”)

The JCI doctrine of “Original Sin” is likewise symptomatic of the false belief in the fundamental separation of the ego or personal self from other life and from the Creator.

In the Pagan conception, human life, and life in all its other forms, is holy and worthy of the highest respect, as it is essentially one with the Universal Source.

The biblical “Fall Of Man” -Adam and Eve’s banishment from the Garden of Eden - is symbolic of the descent of consciousness from full awareness of cosmic unity into the illusion-world in which we seem to be bound to finite locations in space and time.

True “salvation” involves awakening from the dreamlike trance we have fallen into - the attainment of illumination or enlightenment, “anamnesis” as Phillip K. Dick calls it, like a sleeper rising from a night’s dreams to the light of day.


Mythic Memory
The collective guilt complex of the “Original Sin” doctrine - the belief that our essential selves are somehow fundamentally flawed or “evil” - reflects traumatic experiences the human race endured during the Pleistocene ice age, when massive glaciers covered the formerly fertile forests and plains of Earth’s temperate zones.

The pre-glacial “Golden Age” of human life on Earth lasted for a million years or more - a timespan of which the 10,000 year period we know as “History” is but a tiny fraction.  During this time, humans roamed freely over the Earth in wandering tribal families, partaking of the abundance that the wild forests and fields of a generous Nature provided, surviving on a primarily vegetarian diet of fruits, nuts, seeds, grains and herbs.

In those days (the “Palaeolithic” period), our ancestors lived in peace with each other and with our fellow animal species, enjoying a pacific, pastoral and communal lifestyle.  Their spiritual life involved the worship of Nature as the Great Mother with ecstatic communal sexual rites and the ritualistic use of psychedelic plants.

Mind-to-mind communication with little use of the spoken or written word (telepathy) was the norm for the human race in that time, before the changes began that led to the way of life we now call “civilisation” - i.e. for the vast majority of the time human beings have lived on Earth.  When we began to lose touch with our ancient pre-glacial Pagan worldview,
>> when we turned away from ego-dissolving mushroom worship

and started traveling the path of Egoism, we lost the gift of telepathy and other spiritual powers.

The shamanic traditions teach that humans once had the ability to move freely between Earth and the “spiritual world” - a symbolic remembrance of the free and open reality we once shared.

The loss of conscious telepathy and cognate psychic powers is symbolically depicted in the classical tale of the Tower of Babel in the Bible (Genesis II: 1-9).

Telepathy is still a fact of life for humans, but it now occurs subconsciously - it is inhibited by social conditioning.  In other words, we are telepathic, but we refuse to admit it to ourselves and to each other.  The part of our minds we call the “subconscious” is used as a private basement where we stuff our guilty secrets - rather than the sacred medium of telepathic communion which it once was, and could be again.  We must overcome this anti-telepathic conditioning to regain psychic wholeness and true mental health.

The struggle against this conditioning is a major part of the spiritual path of Post-Apocalyptic Paganism.  The sacraments of Tantric sexuality and entheogenic psychochemistry (the serious spiritual use of psychedelics) are important elements of this work.  These spiritual revolutionary techniques can awaken the Long Memory within us and give us glimpses of the Way it’s Supposed to Be. 

In the natural world, animals and plants have sentience (contrary to the teachings of some human egocentric philosophies) and communicate telepathically.  As we overcome our cultural counter-telepathic conditioning and begin to regain some of the pre-glacial consciousness our species formerly enjoyed, we can share increasingly in telepathic communion with the other living beings that share our world.

The memory of the prehistoric, communal, telepathic period of human life is deeply imbedded in our collective unconscious.  We carry within our genes a living memory of our former way of life, and it’ s reflected in our myths, legends and folk tales, appearing in such guises as the Biblical “Garden of Eden,” the “Summerland” of European Paganism, and the “dreamtime” of the Australian Aborigines.

The catastrophic changes in the global climate during the Pleistocene glaciations led to our “Fall From Grace” into the brutal lifestyle of the Neolithic period - characterised by fear and fighting, aggressive competitiveness for dwindling resources, and the eating of animal flesh.

The drinking of fermented alcohol was an accidental discovery during this period, resulting from the hoarding of the remnants of disappearing vegetable substances that were preserved in honey.

Ego enhancing alcoholic beverages gradually replaced ego dissolving psychedelic plants as celebratory intoxicants, and the nature of religious ideation correspondingly shifted from the archetype of the benign Mother Goddess to that of the cruel, angry, jealous and war-loving male deity.

The changes brought about by these traumatic events led to a species-wide psychological reaction and gave rise to cultural schizoid tendencies.  These symptoms have marked human history with behavioural disturbances like the war, economic disparity, and ecological destruction that we have come to accept as “normal” in the brief memory span that we know of as modern, historical time.  The post-glacial “Neolithic Revolution” brought about a shift from a nomadic, communal food gathering economy to one  based on settled agriculture.  Lands became “property”

instead of the shared bounty that they had always been.  Agriculture required intensive labour, which the strong forced the weaker to do; thus, slavery and government were born.

Rational / linear thought became dominant over intuitive / holistic creativity under the pressure of the increasing complexity of agriculturally based settlements.  A chain reaction began of dominance / submission relationships, authority, hierarchy, power lust and greed for wealth - leading eventually to the growth of cities, armies, empires and nation-states - spawning technology, war, and ecological destruction.

We are still suffering from the effects of the last ice age - a sort of species-wide “post-traumatic stress disorder” that threatens to push us over the edge into a worldwide suicidal psychosis.

Post-Apocalyptic Paganism offers the human race a form of collective therapy that can lead us through the perils of the present and into a future in which the Edenic paradise of our ancestors is restored.   By tuning in to the revelation that has been received in our time, we can precipitate the revolution that will transform the world from its present chaotic state, into a condition conducive for peace, love, happiness, and ecological harmony.


Agenda for Change
The essential recognitions that will make our vision of the future a reality include the following principles, which will form the basic platform of the Church of Gnostic Luminism:

All sentient beings are related.  We are all one family, siblings who have been brought forth by the same Mother and Father.  Like it or not, we are all in this together, and we bear the responsibility of sisters and brothers for one another.  We must bring this realisation to bear in both personal and social relations.

All Earth-born people are equal citizens of the Universe, equal co-heirs of Earth and Her constituent elements.  No one can justly be denied fair and equal access to the resources of nature necessary for survival.  Any society that deprives even a single person of access to food, shelter, clothing, medical care, or education, is a criminal society.  A cooperative economy could easily provide abundance for all Earth citizens with the technology that exists today.  There is no moral excuse for our failure to do so.

Collective decisions are only legitimate if they have the fully informed agreement and consent of each person affected by them.  “Authority” imposed without consent is tyranny.  The tyranny of illegitimate authority can rightly be resisted by any means necessary.  We must learn and practice the techniques of voluntary cooperation and consensus making.  Social arrangements that are enforced by coercion - by violence and the threat of violence, or by threat of deprivation of the necessities of life - are morally unjustifiable and will lead inevitably to tyranny and oppression.  Such arrangements must be opposed and resisted at every level of society.

We must abandon the corrupt practice of eating the flesh of dead animals.  Humans are not designed to be carnivorous; we are designed by Nature to eat fruits, nuts, grains, seeds and herbs.  The animal-slaughtering industry brutalises our society and deadens us to the natural empathy and compassion for our fellow beings that can aid our spiritual evolution.  A vegetarian diet is more healthful and more economical, enabling us to feed more people with a smaller amount of farmland.

Psychedelic sacraments must be made available to those who choose to use them.  The persecution of those who follow the spiritual path that Patanjali called the Yoga of Light-Containing Herbs (see the Yoga Sutras, 4:1) is just as much a crime as were the inquisitions and witch burnings of the Dark Ages.  Proper use of entheogens can aid individuals to achieve transcendental states of consciousness that can be of infinite benefit both to their own spiritual development and to the evolution of society as a whole.  (Accurate education and training is essential for the use of these sacraments; their misuse can be dangerous - use of psychedelics for “partying” is foolish and risky.)

Human technology must honour and protect the animals and plants that share our planet. To the degree that it fails to do so, our technology is a criminal assault on our fellow Earth dwellers, and its existence cannot be tolerated. We have the knowledge and ability to create fully Earth sensitive, life honouring technology. Some examples:

Solar energy systems and agriculturally based (i.e. hemp) biomass plants can be used to provide power.  The burning of fossil fuels must be ended  it’s the single most serious cause of ecological disruption, the direct cause of acid rain, global warming, and pollution of air and water.  Nuclear power plants are also an unnecessary danger when free solar energy can be transmuted into electricity by a wide variety of methods, from the ancient windmill to the latest photo-voltaic cell.  Hydrogen fuel cells can be used to power vehicles, with pure water as the only “exhaust.”

Cellulose (e.g. from hemp, our most efficient source) can replace petrochemicals for the manufacture of biodegradable plastics and synthetics, and for clean burning fuels.  Cellulose from hemp can be used to make paper without the toxic chemical pollutants used in wood pulp papermaking, so that we can have paper without consuming forests.

Technologies that are not ecologically safe can be moved away from Earth’s fragile biosphere, into interplanetary space, where unlimited free solar energy is available and toxic wastes can be safely disposed of by tossing them into the Sun.  We have the technological capability to expand human living and working space beyond the limits of the planet.  If a small percentage of world military expenditures were redirected to space development, we could have mining colonies and domed biosphere habitats on the moon and in the asteroid belt within a few years, and Mars and the Jovian moons need not be beyond our children’s reach.  Orbiting habitats (“space colonies”) are also vital to humankind’s future.  The new frontier awaits us.  “Go up, young wo/man, go up!”

Desalinisation plants can be used to irrigate the deserts and turn them back into the fertile plains and forests they once were.  Again, this could be done with the expenditure of a small percentage of present military budgets.

High-rise hydroponics gardens can be built in the inner cities, using abandoned buildings, with solar collectors and fibber optic cables to bring sunlight into the interior - a few such “agricultural factories” could feed an entire city.

These are a few sample ideas; many more can be developed.  The Church of Gnostic Luminism seeks volunteers to share information and work toward achievement of these goals.


This preliminary sketch of the goals and ideals of Post-Apocalyptic Paganism is offered as food for thought, in the hope that it will stimulate meditation and the thirst for revelation in the reader - revelation which is readily available to those who will open their minds and hearts to the living presence of Mother Earth and Father Sun.

May this Revelation bloom anew in a fresh generation, and may it inspire fresh dedication to the worldwide Revolution by which the lifeways of peace, love and harmony can be brought again into prominence on our fair planet.

WE WHO CALL FOR PEACE MUST OFFER MORE THAN JUST THE HOPE THAT THE PROBLEM WILL GO AWAY.  PEACE IS A RESULT, NOT A SOLUTION!  IT IS THE RESULT OF ACTIONS TAKEN TO RESOLVE A PROBLEM.

TO END DEFENSIVE JIHAD TERRORISM WE MUST IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM, THEN DEAL WITH THE CAUSES.

THE PROBLEM/PEACE SOLUTION
1. except where we are able to admit our own far far worse & far far longer term terrorism, we must stop seeing it purely as terrorism.

2. al-queda leaders have made very clear all along that they are fighting a defensive jihad, the only one permitted by islam - the kind saladin fought successfully against the christian crusades.  indeed, as I read mohamed’s words, such action is obligatory on all muslims when the Faith / Faithful are under attack.  once a defensive jihad has been declared, aggressive attacks on the Enemy become permitted, even required.

(if your response is THEYRE ATTACKING US!, then ask yourself how many arab soldiers are positioned in your country.  and if u say, after all this, that our military were invited in by some MEGA FAT QUISLING SHEIKH, then I say u r a baboon :))  such ignorance is a geometrically accelerating danger to me and to all people on this planet.

3. we ALREADY KNOW against what those thousands of terrorists and hundreds of thousands of supporters are defending. and their demands are eminently reasonable:

A.  REMOVAL OF ALL FOREIGN TROOPS FROM ARAB LANDS (except UN)

B.  IMPOSITION OF A UN AGREED PEACE SETTLEMENT AROUND ISRAEL’S BORDERS. (militarily if necessarily, and for as long as required -  like yugoslavia).

these are an absolute minimum, are eminently reasonable, would already stop the massive spread of terrorism in its tracks, and would save hundreds (possibly hundreds of thousands?) of western lives over the next decade.  meanwhile the withdrawn personnel and equipment should be put to protecting our own homelands and borders.

C. FINANCIAL COMPENSATION FOR ALL FORCED CONTRACTS AND CRIMES AGAINST THEM, AND A SIMULTANEOUS CANCELLATION OF ALL WORLD DEBT (for the same reasons - and let’s pray the africans and the indians will be more ‘understanding’ than the arabs!)
removing soldiers and settling the israel question only delivers a level playing field, it would not be nearly enough to compensate for all the bullying terrorism we have practised on their civilisation over the centuries and since the discovery of oil. 
what’s fundamentally required is not some begrudging inch-by-inch retreat but a Magnificent Public Gesture to show Sincerity and Contrition (far better than having it forced on us at a later date when SOME terrorism continued to develop).  the establishing of a fair “market price” for oil would be an excellent step in this general direction - say double what we’ve allowed so far?

the above actions (or UN promises to implement) would, at a single stroke or in several steps,
i]  cut off the ‘religious’ base of the jihad
ii] answer the political grievances
iii] resolve the economic crimes. 
they would thus drain the massively spawning community of fanatics of public support, the planet would be perceived by all its inhabitants to be on a proper and fair evolutionary path at last, the terrorism problem would begin to wither on the vine, and surprisingly quickly the present problem would be looked back on as having been little more than a learning curve on humanity’s progress towards globality.

obviously none of this can begin to happen till the dinosaurs have finally been shrugged onto the Fossil Record, with the name George Bush consigned to History as the planet’s Greatest Bogyman & Schmuck.  sounds about right to me :)
