AFTER BALI, NONE OF US ARE SAFE AND BRITAIN MUST BE NEXT BUT HOW ARE WE TO PROTECT BRITISH CITIZENS ACROSS THE PLANET?  AND IS FURTHER WAR (AGAINST IRAQ ETC) GOING TO MAKE US SAFER OR WHEN DOES THE SANE WORLD RISE UP AND SAY:  ENUFF IS ENUFF, BESIDES BEING TUFF ON TERRORISM WE MUST BE TUFF ON THE UNDERLYING AND INCREASING CAUSES OF THAT TERRORISM

The Bali outrage provoked a new fractal of 9/11.  Self-similar questions were raised as to: who planted the bombs, and how did they plan the  massacre?
But by far the most important point,
WHY DID THEY DO IT?, has so far gone almost totally unasked!!  Which is more terrifying than the disgusting carnage itself!
FOR WE HAVE SLIPPED INTO THE INEVITABLE LOGIC OF WAR JUST AS THOSE WHO OPPOSED THE AFGHAN TURKEY-SHOOT PREDICTED.  EACH SIDE’S ATROCITIES GET WORSE AS EACH SIDE INCREASINGLY DEMONISES THE OTHER, EVEN AS WE WARNED, UNTIL THE ‘OTHER’ BECOMES MERE ANIMAL ‘KILLS’ AND CLOSURE RECEDES CONTINUALLY - UNLESS AN OUTSIDE ‘STRANGE NEW ATTRACTOR’ COMES INTO PLAY.
John Howard, Australian PM, Tony Blair, George Bush and Jack Straw employed the morally-outraged word "terrorism" to smother any discussion about what lay behind the crime.  With discussion of motive thus banned from the airwaves, “terrorists” are increasingly being reduced to mindless psychopaths out to destroy civilisation FOR NO REASON (that’s the American ‘civilisation’, where alienated gunmen terrorise their capital cities, and kids shoot up their schools and supermarkets).

SO WHY AUSTRALIA?
The “terrorists” must have known that Australians would be the principal victims.  After Tony Blair, John Howard has been Bush's tuffest supporter, indeed Australia joined the "war on terror" within 24 hours of 9/11 and Australian special forces have been operating against al-Qa'ida in the Afghan mountains.  Well, al-Qa'ida (or a thousand other spawning ‘resistance’ networks) just hit back.
First it was France, with the killing of 11 submarine technicians in Karachi, followed by the suicide attack on the French oil tanker off the coast of Yemen.
Now it’s Australia’s turn.

The familiar choice of a nightclub (associated in the Islamist mind with sex, alcohol and
sin) strongly suggests the ‘resistance’ grouping is one of the "Islamist" movements.  As Robert Fisk said in the Independent: “If millions of Muslims are revolted at the Bali massacre, few will approve of nightclubs. The usual moral slippage can be employed; the bombing was terrible, but ...  Or so the murderers will hope.”

SO WHO’S NEXT?  BRITAIN!  OBVIOUSLY!
Tony Blair’s support for the United States (despite a majority against) makes Britain the second most likely candidate for attack.  But Brits are scattered across the globe in embassies, on holidays, in hippy hideouts, on every airline of the world.  Can we no longer travel our own fookin planet, then?! This is the security u promised?!  And now you’re offering us even more security!!!!
And not forgetting the small, more vulnerable nations that give quiet assistance to the American military; Belgium, which hosts Nato HQ;  Canada, whose special forces have also been operating in Afghanistan; Ireland, which allows US military aircraft to refuel at Shannon, the list goes on.

Bali only emphasises what last year should have taught us: the Fundamentalists who run the show have made us, each one of us, the Front Line; and it’s we who must become the ‘Strange New Attractor’ that forces the fair and peaceful solving of the injustices of the world (surrendering some of our unfair benefits in the process since its our side that’s been committing them) or the fractal offered by the bin Bush Fundamentalists will inevitably and increasingly dominate this millennium.  Must we go on, as in every battle in history, until too many young men (and old and women) have died?!

HEILBUSH:
the Historical Analogy Americans Are Too Scared To Consider
- and don’t quite believe... yet.
by Mani Shankar Aiyar

Germany, which destroyed the 20th century, is poised to save the 21st.  The people who voted for the Third Reich have now voted "No" to the invasion of IraqWHY?

The
Bush Doctrine has thrown aside national sovereignty and collective security under the U.N. Charter in favour of "Regime change."

Saddam must go.  Arafat must go....

"Regime change" is what Hitler insisted on when he ordered the Austrian Chancellor Kurt von Schuschnigg to quit in favour of the Nazi quisling Artur Seyss-Inquart.  Why did he do that?  Because the Chancellor had dared to order a plebiscite on whether the Austrian people wished to be absorbed into the German Reich.

"Regime change" is what Hitler then demanded in PraguePresident Edouard Benes held out, hoping his allies  France, Britain and the USSR would come to his rescue.  But, instead of mobilising, British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain flew (twice) to Hitler's feet, returning with a piece of a paper proclaiming "Peace in our time".  Germany then marched into Czechoslovakia without a shot being fired.

Sound like Bush threatening Saddam into submission?

"Regime change" was then personally supervised by Hitler in the Hradacny palace.

"Regime change" is what Hitler next demanded in Poland, namely that Colonel Josef Beck go and Berlin decide who would rule in Warsaw (like Kabul?).  But Beck demurred, the Brits suddenly discovered their resolve, and the Second World War began.

"Regime change" killed 50 million people.  And that’s why the German Minister of Justice compared the actions of Bush to those of Hitler.

For the fact is that Bush is readying to do to Baghdad what Franco and his Nazi allies did to Guernica.
"Waves of aircraft flew abreast to carry out the first European exercise in carpet bombing."  The first flight dropped six bombs containing a ton and a half of explosives in the center of Guernica, “causing havoc among passengers waiting for the Bilbao train, gashing open the front of the Hotel Julian and leaving the station plaza strewn with smashed bodies and smoking debris.  A cloud of dust mushroomed skywards and witnesses heard the`wild shrieking of a terrified people.'  Every fifteen minutes the raiders returned.  They pulverised the town, creating a miniature fire-storm in its ruins.  They destroyed three-quarters of the buildings. Whether the inhabitants prayed or screamed, fled or cowered, they were pursued by flights of fighters which,`like flashing dancing waves on shingle,' machine-gunned them from as low as 200 feet."   Piers Brendon The Dark Valley.
(The unbounded horror of it all was captured by
Pablo Picasso on canvas).

When Bush threatens to unleash the technology of the Western war machine on a minor industrial power like Iraq, it’s identical to what fascist
Mussolini did to Abyssinia (Ethiopia) when Emperor Haile Selassie refused to yield up his nation as an Italian colony.

"The Ethiopians swarmed like a feudal host, some with spears and swords, others with antique rifles and colourful bandoliers. They lacked almost everything a modern army needs. They had no supplies save what they and their camp followers could carry  mainly bags of millets. They had almost no medical services. They had no war-planes, hardly any artillery and little mechanised ground support. They had no proper communications. They had no coherent strategy and no fixed chain of command.  All they had was a common purpose and boundless courage."  Piers Brendon The Dark Valley.

What followed might well repeat itself in Iraq:
"Though generally ill-led, these warriors showed Spartan contempt for danger, throwing themselves bodily at machine guns, fighting tanks as though they were wild animals."

When tanks and machine guns failed, Italy resorted to poison gas and saturation bombing from the air. Vittorio Mussolini, the son, like George W Bush, of the man who started it all, had this to say of a bombing raid he personally led:
"A little group of Ethiopian cavalry bloomed like a rose when my fragmentation bombs fell in their midst. It was great fun and you could hit them easily."

As at Munich, Bush is using one concession to extract the next.  Collective security is being torn up as comprehensively as when Hitler occupied the Rhineland and Mussolini marched into Abyssinia and Imperial Japan invaded Manchuria and Stalin entered the Nazi-Soviet pact.

Fraser,
Thank you for the report about the anti-war march in London. I can hardly believe tens of thousands showed up! It’s so encouraging to know. Our media in the USA is so terrible, and I’m ashamed and disturbed how the American people are virtually being sold this war on Iraq through the propaganda that is aired on TV and main stream media. Our country is no longer governed "by the people, for the people" it’s run by those who have the most money and power. There were demonstrations in many cities around the USA with thousands of people attending, but there was no media coverage (maybe 2 seconds). Except on our only free speech radio in the USA
- KPFA in Berkeley. So I just wanted to let you know how I feel as an American because I’m afraid that all the rest of the world hears is that all Americans support this war.

WAR AND POLL WATCHING
AS WE’VE OFTEN SAID, AMERICA IS NOT AMERICANS
"We, the unheard American public, pray that the world realises that we have a fool in charge who does not speak for us."
Slowly, inconsistently but palpably, ordinary Americans are making their voices heard.  It’s no anti-war movement to compare with Vietnam, not yet, and their motivations are often practical, even mundane.  But a strange phenomenon is now apparent in which Karl Rove, Bush's top electoral strategist and poll-watcher, may yet emerge as a more potent force than the Cheney-Rumsfeld axis and all the other full-spectrum dominators combined.

Each time Bush makes another, ever more far-fetched, fearsome claim about the Baghdad bogeyman, domestic support wavers or slips, but certainly does not rise, as this week's Pew Center survey confirms. Far from uniting his nation, as he claims, Bush's demagoguery is discernibly exposing and deepening its divisions, not just on Iraq but along the deep, still heaving fault lines of the 2000 election. More and more of the 76% of citizens who did not support him then (he won 47% of the popular vote on a 51% turnout) find their judgment vindicated now. "The public is deeply split," says the Pew survey.

Though Bush still enjoys considerable but softening overall support, his approval ratings are steadily declining.  The latest month-on-month
Gallup shows support for military action dropping towards 50% despite the vast weight of official propaganda reworking last year's still resonant trauma.  If a unilateral war without allies or UN backing is postulated, as in this week's New York Times/CBS poll, a clear majority opposes Bush.  Majorities also say he should allow UN weapons inspectors to return to Iraq, and they question his motives.  These findings are hardly conclusive, but suggest a trend, a rising level of distrust, and are reason to believe that Bush may yet be given pause.

That the anti-Bush, silenced majority feels it is being ignored by politicians and the mainstream media is abundantly clear from unsolicited American responses to a critique of this week's Cincinnati national address by Bush published on the Guardian's website* and on US links.  This random sample also indicates rapidly rising anxiety, frustration and anger about Iraq, and Bush himself.  Here, perhaps, the authentic voice of America may be heard.

"I have never seen so much bullshit thrown at the American public in my lifetime, with too many people thinking it may be true if the president says it."  77-year-old from Manchester, New Hampshire.

"We are being rail-roaded into war over here. I am astounded by our president and his tactics utilising fear."

"When I voted for Bush I had no idea what he would unleash."

"He’s a complete and pathetic idiot ... I think enough Americans are beginning to see that the real regime change needs to take place at the White House".  Arizona.

"The Bush presidency should have been nipped in the bud by the supreme courtWe've been bamboozled and Congress doesn't seem to know what to do."  Illinois

"As an American I am totally speechless at whatever emanates from Bush's mouth - I mean, my 12-year-old son would make a better president."  Maryland.

"To attack with so little proof is ghastly ... As someone who smelled the World Trade Center and its human occupants burn every day for three months, I do not wish that fate on the long-suffering Iraqi people." New York

"All he’s trying to do is divert attention from his failure as a leader ... under Bush we are giving up all our civil rights in the name of fighting the war on terror. If we do not agree with him, we are anti-American."  Texas

"The American media shows complete indifference to ... the opinions of many if not most Americans (of whom) a majority are against this stupid adventure."  California.

"As an older American who loves her country, I am terrified.  Younger Americans just do not seem to realise the dangers of this arrogant, stupid little man. I pray God will help us - because our main press glorifies him and few congressmen oppose him."

"He’s beginning to sound like a movie trailer for Creatures with an Atom Brain".
Manhattan

Indeed, Americans are far more scathing about Bush than supposedly anti-American Europeans.
"Redneck pea-brain" is one epithet; "King George", "Lord High Executioner" and "imperialist" are others. "Insane" and "madman" crop up a lot. "Loony" says a psychiatrist from Ohio. "Corporate terrorist" says a vexed lady from Florida.
There are voices from the other side, of course, enraged by foreign criticism.
"Stupid, ignorant asshole ... Pathetic limey twit ... Islamo-fascist apologist ... Snotty eurotrash ... Parasitic appeasers ... When we want your opinion, we'll come over there and beat it out of you!"  But the balance is 9-1 against.

Yet crucially, amid all this angst and ire, Iraq is not the big issue on American minds.  All polls agree that
the economy and jobs are the main concern.  Up to 60% do not approve of Bush's economic stewardship; that figure is rising.  Feeding in are worries about Enron-type corruption, the stock market plunge and dwindling personal saving accounts.  Despite Bush's politics of fear, what Americans are really frightened of is deepening recession

And they rightly suspect that a costly
Middle East war, oil shocks and spreading financial instability could make matters much, much worse.  As Bill Clinton said, "It's the economy, stupid".  In America, it always is.  Here is the mortal gap in Bush's war armour.  Here, in the prospect of following his father into one-term obloquy, is what could yet stop Bush on Iraq.

Americans worry about
Iraq, but They worry about their own country more.  And Bush, not Saddam, is pig in the middle.
"This man is destroying our nation piece by piece," writes Jewel from Missouri.  "We, the unheard American public, pray that the world realises that we have a fool in charge and he does not speak for us."

coincidences, snipers and
random’ anthrax eh attax
Fraser,
I know I'm not the only one who has doubts about coincidences, particularly when they happen on a grand scale.  For example, when the good people of the U.S. should have been debating whether or not to attack Afghanistan (or somewhere else or not at all?), their attention was instead diverted by all the news stories about their own vulnerability to being killed by a random anthrax attack. Today we know this was an inside job ... the terrorist who mailed the anthrax is one of us, quite possibly someone working for the government.

Two days ago, the U.S. Congress essentially
cancelled our Constitution by giving unlimited power to wage war to the military junta that took over this country when they rigged the elections of 2000. In our schools we teach our children that our country is always for the underdog, and that we will never be the aggressor in a war. Not only is this a factual lie, the doctrine of first strike is now the law as well.

A STAKE HAS BEEN DRIVEN DEEP INTO THE HEART OF WHAT MOST PEOPLE IN THIS LAND STILL THINK OF AS AMERICA
. With this final abrogation of power by our elected officials, our pseudo democracy is dead ... the judicial branch died in November 2000 when it failed to protect the voters of Florida from what has now been proven to be a rigged election.

On the streets and around office water coolers, people are quietly talking about what to do if, or when, marshal law is declared, and few people believe that national elections will be held in 2004 ... these are dark days indeed.
BUT WHAT IS THE ONLY THING THAT WE SEE AND HEAR IN THE NEWS THESE DAYS? ... a sniper is killing people at random in the Washington, D.C. area. That is quite literally ALL that’s in the news ... even the BBC News show hosted from Washington spent most of its time on Friday with the sniper story, and they DID NOT EVEN MENTION THE VOTE IN THE SENATE, which anointed Caesar its emperor.

The silence on this issue in the press is deafening. Isn't it an interesting coincidence that once again our attention is being forced to focus on concerns for our personal safety. In our nation's capital, of all places, isn't it an interesting coincidence that its citizens and its media are being forced to stay indoors, all public events cancelled, and thus in its own capital there is not much of a chance to discuss the death of the republic.  This is effectively marshal law without the edict, and it has been brought about by a person or persons who have the skills of a
military marksman .... what a surreal story this is.

UK ENVOY `PROUD' OF CRITICAL COMMENTS MADE AGAINST ISRAEL
Haaretz Daily
The British ambassador to Israel, Sherard Cowper-Coles, says he is "proud" of his comments that were published Monday and in which he described the West Bank and Gaza Strip as "the biggest detention camp in the world."

In the report, Cowper-Coles is attributed with accusing Israel of contravening the Geneva Convention and the Israel Defence Forces of displaying a "lack of professionalism," during a leaked conversation last week with IDF Major General Amos Gilad, coordinator of government activities in the territories.

Cowper-Coles told Ha'aretz Monday that the comments, reported in the Yedioth Ahronot daily, were
"exaggerated, but broadly true."

The ambassador also criticised Israel for continuing to build settlements, for "the unnecessary humiliation and harassment" of the local civilian population at checkpoints, unnecessarily uprooting trees and making life difficult for the international welfare organizations, according to the report.

Cowper-Coles says he did not regret his comments, which were made
"in the spirit of friendship."  He said he was "very shocked" by what he has seen in the territories, "as anyone else who visited there would be.  Anyone who is a friend of Israel would say what I said, because it is clear the situation is certainly not good for the Palestinians, or for Israel."

Cowper-Coles says his many references to the suffering of Israelis due to terrorism, security pressures and difficulties relating to pulling out of the territories were not conveyed
.  "It's a pity because it's not the whole truth."

If it emerges that someone in the Foreign Ministry leaked the story, Cowper-Coles said, "it certainly won't increase my respect" of the ministry. We don't believe in megaphone diplomacy."

The ambassador, who has learned to speak a competent level of Hebrew since arriving here just over a year ago, was recently praised for the sensitivity he displayed when dealing with Israeli terror victims and their families.

On Monday, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said the ministry had adopted a
"serious view" of Cowper-Coles's remarks.

"US does blah blah blah" is just too much shit!!!  spoil my fucking trip why don't you.
For a start - the American people (obviously not the Bush  gang) failed to question the election rigging of 2000.  So the American people voted for Bush even if it was 'by default'.  And the American people took too long to think about the consequences ofa "permanent state of war" without realising the implicationsof the "Homeland Security" legislation before it wastoo late.   Congress actually didn’t do a bad job at preserving some of the constitution!
So no - I don't buy it - America, wake the fuck up.  The People are the only answer to this.
Non violent, civil disobedience is what we want to see.  Don't go to work.  Get it fuckingsorted, and stop blaming the government that you LET TAKE CONTROL! Demand an enquiry.  Demand your rights as Citizens of the USA!!!!!!!!!  It would open a can of worms big enough to question the whole fucking thing,  Democrats included. But regardless, why don't you take responsibility instead ofthe monotonous whingingabout your fucking "leader".  He isnot a leader  he’s a Nobody, who bought his way to power with the help of his Nazi-supported father.  Go and read some Greg Palast!  He’s a cheat and a fraud and very fucking stupid. Who gives a toss what Tony or anyone else thinks?!  The "market" runs America, runs the world, and runs YOU.  BUT, GIVEN THAT THE MARKET’S LEGITIMACY RESTS NOW WITH U.S. MILITARY POWER- the American people are the only folk with the power to stop this (we'll all help).
America - youshould start taking responsibility for the power vested in you. You stop the tax dollars - even for a week  and you stop this insanity.  The questionis:
How muchdo you wantit? That, my friends, is the fuckin harsh reality of it.  As a dismayed friend of mine in NY said "all they care about is the new truck they’re gonna get and that pair of expensive sneakers"
Do us all a favour - the future’s in your hands American Citizen - prove us wrong.
Please.

And the rest of us should shut up and lend a hand and stop moaning about Bush and Blair - its getting really boring.
NON OF US SHOULD GO TO WORK FOR A WEEK - GREAT;  A GLOBAL FUCKIN’ HOLIDAY, FUCK THE "SNEAKERS"!

peace AND love, and more love, and no expensive fucking sneakers or trucks.
you can't buy security, peace or freedom.

SPYING IN IRAQ:
FROM FACT TO ‘ALLEGATION’
Nothing makes a newspaper prouder than a juicy foreign-policy scoop  except when it raises awkward questions about a U.S. administration's drive for war.
Back in 1999, major papers ran front-page investigative stories revealing that the CIA had covertly used U.N. weapons inspectors to spy on Iraq.
·         "United States officials said today that American spies had worked undercover on teams of United Nations arms inspectors."  New York Times (1/7/99).
·         "The US infiltrated agents and espionage equipment for 3 years into United Nations arms control teams in Iraq to eavesdrop on the Iraqi military without the knowledge of the U.N. agency."  Washington Post (3/2/99).
·         “Undercover U.S. agents carried out an ambitious spying operation designed to penetrate Iraq's intelligence apparatus and track the movement of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, according to U.S. and U.N. sources." Boston Globe (1/6/99).

Each story ran on the front pages.  At first, U.S. officials tried to deny them, but as more details emerged,
"spokesmen for the CIA, Pentagon, White House and State Department declined to repeat any categorical denials" (Washington Post, 3/2/99).  By the spring of 1999, the spying was accepted as fact by other outlets, and even defended:
"Experts say it is naive to believe that the United States and other governments would not have used the opportunity presented by the U.N. commission to spy on a country that provoked the Persian Gulf War in 1991 and that has continued to tangle with U.S. and British forces." USA Today. (3/3/99).

BUT THAT WAS THEN, NOW WE’RE THE GOOD GUYS
Now that the Bush admin has placed the inspectors at the centre of its war plans, these same papers have become noticeably queasy about recalling UNSCOM's past spying.  The spy scandalbadly damaged the credibility of the inspections process, especiallyafter reports that data collected through UNSCOM werelater used to pick targets in the 1998 bombing of Iraq:
"National security insiders, blessed with their unprecedented intelligence bonanza from UNSCOM, convinced themselves that bombing Saddam Hussein's internal apparatus would drive the Iraqi leader around the bend." Washington Post analystWilliam Arkin (1/17/99).

Facts their own correspondents confirmed 3 years ago in interviews with top U.S. officials are suddenly being recycled as
mere allegations coming from Saddam Hussein's regime.

·         The UNSCOM team, explained the New York Times' Barbara Crossette on August 3 this year, was replaced "after Mr. Hussein accused the old commission of being an American spy operation and refused to deal with it."  A fact in a front-page story 3 years earlier by her colleague, Tim Weiner, suddenly becomes an "accusation."
·         “As recently as Sunday, Iraqi officials called the inspectors ‘spies’ and accused them of deliberately prolonging their work," the Washington Post's Baghdad correspondent wrote recently in a story casting doubt on the Iraqi regime's intentions of cooperating (9/8/02).  Readers would have no way of knowing that the Post's Barton Gellman exhaustively detailed the facts of the spying in a series of 1999 articles.
·         "Iraq accused some of the inspectors of being spies, because they remained on their host countries' payrolls while reviewing Iraq's weapons," the Boston Globe's Elizabeth Neuffer wrote recently, in an oddly garbled rendition of the charges (9/14/02).  She could have boasted that her paper's own Colum Lynch (now with the Washington Post) was widely credited with first breaking the story of UNSCOM's spying in a January 6, 1999 front-page expose.  But she chose not to.

THE DRUMS OF WAR...
"Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war
In order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic
Fervour, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged
sword.  It both emboldens the blood, just as it
Narrows the mind.... And when the drums of war have
Reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate
And the mind has closed, the leader will have no
Need in seizing the rights of the citizenry.
Rather, the citizenry, infused with fear and blinded
With patriotism, will offer up all of their rights
Unto the leader, and gladly so. How do I know?
For this is what I have done. And I am Caesar."

we wouldn’t ban cars cos some people abuse them, neither should we ban drugs cos some people fail, that’s the difference between liberals and authoritarians, and i’m very liberal

UK MINISTERS PRESS FOR END TO GM BAN
by Geoffrey Lean

British ministers are pressing this week for a Europe-wide go-ahead on new GM crops and foods. At two crucial meetings of EU ministers, they’ve been pushing for an immediate end to the ban on approving new GM products that’s been in operation for the past four years.
Success for their bid (which follows intense pressure from the United States) will pave the way for
new GM products to appear on supermarket shelves, and new GM crops to be sown in fields throughout the continent.
Britain has been arguing all week at meetings of agriculture ministers that the ban is illegal. The European Commission takes the same view, and the political balance in Europe has shifted in their favour as a result of recent right-wing election victories across the continent.

Pete Riley of Friends of the Earth last night described the British position as "another case of the Government kowtowing to George Bush, jeopardizing the interests of its own people to please its master across the Atlantic".
No new GM crops or foods have been approved for use in the EU since October 1998, when governments imposed a voluntary moratorium in the face of rising public anger at the way the technology was introduced, largely without consumers knowing about it.
The United States has consistently campaigned against the ban which, it claims, has cost it $200m (128m) a year in lost corn exports alone but
France, Denmark, Italy, Greece, Austria, Luxembourg and Belgium have insisted they’d veto any new approvals, pending new regulations for labeling GM products and for tracing them back to their source.
New regulations approved six months ago come into force on Thursday, and the EC is taking the opportunity to press for the ban to be lifted, fearing that otherwise the United States will take action against it in the World Trade Organisation.
David Byrne, the EU Health and Safety Commissioner, says that
"conditions are now ripe" for lifting the ban and, echoing language used by Tony Blair, adds: "Europe must act now to prevent the biotech field being hindered by emotional reaction."
Environmentalists point out that evidence has strengthened enormously that genes from GM crops will spread, contaminating other produce and creating superweeds, indeed EC reports now accept that this is "inevitable".  Concerns that GM foods may pose health risks have also grown.
Although the new regulations do provide for labeling, environmentalists say they contain no detailed provisions to trace the
GM products.  Nor do they address how firms and farmers should be made liable for any damage to health and the environment.
