A major shift on drugs was signaled this week when the UK government said it would turn a blind eye to the use of ecstasy in night clubs.AS UK GOVERNMENT BOWS TO ARRIVAL OF NEW SHAMANIC GENERATION “SAFER CLUBBING GUIDE” ADVOCATING “CHILL OUT ROOMS FOR DRUG COMEDOWNS” BACKED BY POLICE AND HOSPITALS The Home Office issued a new set of safety guidelines on how club-owners should best deal with drug taking immediately sparking an attack from some campaigners who accused the government of effectively encouraging clubbers to break the law. Home Office minister Bob Ainsworth said there was no point simply ignoring the drug culture surrounding the club scene, and that taking substances such as ecstasy was an “integral part” of a night out for many youngsters. “We have to recognise that some clubbers will continue to ignore the risks and carry on taking dangerous drugs. If we cannot stop them, then we must be prepared to take steps to reduce the harm they may cause themselves.” Ministers are now effectively abandoning the hardliner “JUST SAY NO” approach in favour a more liberal stance encouraging clubbers and club owners to manage the problem better. The Home Office’s new “SAFER CLUBBING GUIDE” urges managers to provide “Chill Out” rooms for clubbers to wind down from the effects of drug taking, and to lay on “adequate supplies” of drinking water, ensure proper ventilation, and prevent overcrowding. NO APOLOGIES YET FOR 30 YEARS OF BARBARISM! This latest move follows a decision by Home Secretary David Blunkett earlier this year to “downgrade” cannabis from a class B drug to a class C substance, seen as an important first step towards full decriminalisation. Today’s development comes after senior policemen have said publicly that targeting ecstasy users in nightclubs is a “waste of resources”. WOULD SOMEBODY TELL GEORGE?! I'm in San Diego, and have just escaped being arrested by the San Diego police. This book tour keeps getting more surreal, but the last hour has been unlike anything I have yet seen. I came here to speak at an event organized for my book ("STUPID WHITE MEN"). The event is being held at a middle school in an auditorium that seats about 800 people. I have spent the week in California, pretty much at my own expense. Weeks ago, the publisher informed me they would not be sending me to this state if they had to pay to get me there. So I called up my friends at "Politically Incorrect" and asked if they could book me on the show and bring me out there. They were more than happy to help out. I can't believe the crap this show has had to endure because its host one night, early on in "America's NEW War" had the guts to state the truth as he saw it. Advertisers have dropped like flies, affiliates in DC, Columbus, and other cities have canceled the program, and ABC seems eager to deep-six the whole hour it shares with "Nightline." But, for now, they have come to my aid, and I’m grateful. In the past six days, I’ve spoken to 15 separate mobs of people. I don't know what other word to use because, quite simply, wherever I go, there’s this unbelievable pandemonium. Every day, every night, hundreds -- or thousands -- jam themselves into halls, arenas, churches, auditoriums to listen to me talk about my book and whatever else is struggling to make its way through my brain. Forget about standing room only -- these venues look more like breathing room only. As I look out at the crowds of humans doing their best to impersonate sardines, I worry not that some deranged person may shout "FIRE!" but rather that someone may belt out, "There's an extra six inches over here by the radiator!" I have visited the most out-of-the-way places in California and, no matter where I go or how right-wing the district’s congressman is, all sorts of people are desperate to get inside to be with the thousands of others who want to be part of "UNITED WE STAND AGAINST THE THIEF-IN-CHIEF." Grass Valley, Hayward, San Francisco, Santa Rosa, Ukiah, Arcata, Berkeley, Westwood, East L.A., Koreatown (L.A.) -- I wish you could see what I have seen. In every town, at every stop, huge throngs of Americans who are sick and tired of the silence that’s been demanded of them, lest they be thought of as "unpatriotic" by daring to question the actions of George W. Bush and company. Because that's what this tour is really all about. IT'S TIME TO COME OUT AND START ACTING LIKE AMERICANS AGAIN. And then there was San Diego. Over a thousand people are packed inside the 800-seat auditorium. Outside, another thousand people are on the lawn trying to get in. The traffic on the street is tied up and the stream of San Diegoans keeps filing up the sidewalk. I tell the organizers I’m going to spend a half-hour outside speaking to the people who can’t get in. They are, after all, like me -- slackers who are habitually late. The crowd outdoors is wired and jazzed that they’re being honored for being tardy. Then I go inside, give my usual talk, and begin to sign books. There's a 90-year-old lady whose granddaughter has driven her down from Orange County. There's a union organizer from the antiunion San Diego Union-Tribune newspaper who announces that his grandfather was a sit-down striker with my uncle back in 1937 in Flint. Some punk-poet kid tries to finish me off for good by offering me two Krispy Kreme donuts. Hundreds line up to have their books, their "Awful Truth" DVDs and, in one case, an Iron Maiden jean jacket, signed. I am told we are getting close to the time when we’ll have to leave the school, as it has only been rented until 11pm. That is not good. Hundreds are still in line. I don't think any of these signings this week have been over before midnight. 11:30pm, there’s a commotion at the back of the auditorium. I see people start to scatter. The San Diego police are coming down the aisle, their large flashlights out (the auditorium lights are still on, so we all understand the implied "other" use of these instruments). The police are telling everyone to "VACATE THESE PREMISES IMMEDIATELY OR YOU WILL ALL BE ARRESTED!" I cannot believe what I am hearing. "YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE ANOTHER WARNING. LEAVE NOW -- OR FACE ARREST!" The cops approach the stage where I am signing the books. People are visibly frightened -- and about half the book-line bolts toward the doors. I stand up and address the officers. "I am the author of this book," I tell them politely. "These people are only here to get a book and all I am doing is signing them. We will be done shortly." "I don't care who you are," they reply. "We have received a call from the school district and we have been told to remove you. You were supposed to be out of here at 11:00pm." We had apparently violated our curfew. "C'mon guys, you can't be serious," I said. "Are you saying you’re going to arrest me for signing people's books, and arrest the people who are here because they want to read this book?" "I don't care what you are doing -- this is your last warning. I am ready to arrest you and everyone else." "Who is your superior?" I ask. "I'm it. Only the Chief is above me at night, and I am not going to wake him up. This has already gone through many channels. We are here because this has already gone through many people in the last half-hour, people in authority, and the decision has been made to clear you out of here or arrest you." I’ve never been arrested, strange as that may seem. I could not believe that, for all I have done, all I have stood for over the years, it has come down to this -- and I was about to be hauled away for autographing books! "OK," I said. "We'll leave." I mumbled something about the last time I checked, this was still the United States of America -- even if we were just five miles away from where it ends. They escorted me and the few remaining souls out of the building. "I am willing to go to jail for this if you want me to." whispered the brave lady who was the owner of the independent bookstore and who was there selling my book. Ya gotta hand it to the independent bookstores -- they've been through hell lately, so much so that they’re now ready to be led away in handcuffs! I walk outside, and about 40 people ask me if I would still sign their books in the dark of the parking lot. A girl gets out her pocket flashlight. A guy runs over and turns on his headlights. I remark that it feels like we're in some sort of banana republic or East Berlin, secretly meeting so we can have our little book gathering. "Sign quick, Mike, here come the police!" I finish the last book and hop in my sister's car. She remembers to give me a plaque that had been presented to me in absentia (while I was outside talking to the people who couldn't get in). It was from the city councilwoman from the area of San Diego we were in. It read: "Official Proclamation: City of San Diego Declares -- March 9, 2002, 'Michael Moore Day." Yet it is #1 in most cities across the country on the bestseller lists. I don't get it. HarperCollins has been very slow to print books and get them out there. Why this is, I don’t know. No doubt they’ve been caught by out by the overwhelming response to the book. And, considering the self-imposed limitations you’ve chosen (inexplicably) to live under, I tell you frankly, here and now, that I retain a deep respect, even love for you, Tony Blair. Where you studied law, I took an honours in psychology, so let me assure you that I see through 90% of you and Alistair’s hype when I say that. Indeed I’m sure I understand the ‘Life’ pressures you’re under better than you yourself, and probably have a deeper knowledge of current global history than you’ve ever have time for. And yet it still seems clear to me that, so far (though not an inch further!) you have retained your internal moral integrity. You can still look Cherie in the eye at night - and even her ‘socialist’ dad :) You have “stood shoulder to shoulder’ with George Bush through his blind enraged Afghan Turkey Shoot, and I understand and virtually accept that, as a British prime minister operating within extremely narrow options, you probably had to support our longest closest ally in what he saw as his “hour of need” (though it wasn’t, and isn’t, and there are far more people in far greater years and even lifetimes of need!) The vast majority of Brits understand and appreciate you for that. I am certainly grateful for this moral effort, and I do appreciate the tormented price you must have paid in your inner soul. Indeed, it’s because i see that you have tried, so far, to act morally that i’m advising you here today, with truest love: THIS FAR BUT NO FURTHER, TONY! You may think you have time to pull back when it comes to the moral crunch, but what they’re doing is painting you so far into the corner that you’ll be unable to stop Already, as ‘adult’ men discuss the future ‘war’ on tv, it’s becoming normal However, Bush’s public support is starting to tremble (his support is not based on the reality yours is), the Democrats and others are starting to raise duobts, and latest opinion polls say the American public will NOT support an Iraqui turkey shoot unless America has other allies with them. All of which leaves you in a supremely critical position, Tony astutely achieved by backing the bully in his first fit of rage. You have far more power over him now than he has over you. If you leave him who will stay? Nobody! If you follow him into Iraq, do you think that will slow him down, make him more reasonable? Did following him into Afghanistan achieve that?! : AND HE’S ALREADY LET U DOWN OVER STEEL! A DUBBLE WHAMMY FOR YOU AND HE KNEW IT! YOU TWO COME FROM DIFFERENT PLANETS! We were all ‘socialists” in those student days and, whatever your shade of pinkness then or now, we both know it really boiled down to a respect for others and a commitment to make the world a fairer place. And we both know that those of the left start off with some sense of idealism, though whether realistic or otherwise is, I agree, quite another matter .But we have also both known since our youth that the right wing politician enters politics for personal reasons, not to improve the common lot. George Bush started about as far right wing as any politician could start. George Bush never had a feeling of idealism in his entire life! He just thinks you’re shooting the political crap when you talk that way or you’re a bit soft in the head and might need to be dumped when the time comes! And you know this is true in your heart, Tone, don’t look past it to some other dream he’s dangling just beyond your reach. Take a hard look at a few of your differences: He is for hanging.(his ‘principles’ wouldn’t even allow him to oblige you on that!) He is against a woman’s right to abortion. He is whipping up the Drugs War into lunacy just as the whole of Europe is maturing in the opposite direction. Indeed he is intolerant. Where your greatest strength is as a cultured, morally based man with sensibilities and a tolerant breadth who looks to the future, he is a Texan barbarian of the worst type, and owned by shadowy corporates, hucksters, right wing billionaire nutters and bankers. He despises and blames the poor. He opposes any kind of welfare state which you understand is a wise society’s safety net (society’s, not the individual’s!) And he opposes all the other social cares you espouse by instinct and breeding! He has zero ecological credentials. And proud of it! He wants to develop Star Wars when you want to help the poor of the planet. He has no spiritual dimension (whatever hypocrisy he might mouth). He was born a super rich man’s son whose father did business illegally with the Nazis whom your father and mine fought. (I do hope MI5 has supplied you with this kind of information ask them for background reports on this character on Hitler, on Enron, on the Carlye Group, on his links with bin Laden - this guy’s a walking time-bomb!) In short, Bush represents pretty much everything you have concentrated your life on banishing or ameliorating. How long do you seriously, soberly think you can successfully work with a man who is so unlike you?! Look how hard it’s been with Gordon and he’s basically on the same side as you! TOUGH ON TERRORISM & ITS CAUSES NOT! You have wisely emphasised since the WTC bombings that, in so many words, WE MUST BE TOUGH ON TERRORISM AND TOUGH ON THE CAUSES OF TERRORISM. That is the true Third Way and we all know it. And you have tried valiantly and in principled manner to stick to that in so far as Britain has the power to do so. But, as you know in your heart, Bush has only committed to and will never apply more than one half of your recommendation, which makes everything worse with every unilateralist move he bluffs himself into. Do you still think he is suddenly going to change and start looking at causes? Don’t you see that short term ‘victory’ has gone to his head and made him worse, not better? Only failure could make this man start to grow. Do you want to be tied to and sink with his failure?! You, on the other hand, though you already have the blood of several thousand innocent human beings on your hands (plus several thousand more from Yugoslavia), still remain “without blame.” Why? Because, on the level on which you have chosen to work, with options so severely limited, your decisions must be judged in context. BUT ONLY IF YOU CAN NOW SWITCH THE WHOLE ‘WAR ON TERROR’ INTO A ”WAR WITH THE CAUSES OF TERROR” If you now follow Bush into slaughtering more innocents, pointlessly and illegally (terroristicallly), that is when you lose your soul. He never had one to speak of, but you did and still do (just:). Regenerate yourself, Tony. Galvanise the sane sensible word everywhere! I wouldn’t even waste my breath addressing any other politician, but I know YOU COULD DO IT! YOU REALLY COULD. YOU REALLY COULD BECOME THE FIRST GLOBAL POLITICIAN TO LEAD US ALL TO THE NEXT AND HIGHER MORAL EVOLUTIONARY GROUND. THIS IS YOUR MORAL WATERLOO, TONY, THE GREAT CROSSROADS IN YOUR LIFE Now let us talk of Wisdom and the Inner Life, the arena to which I have chosen to devote my life. And I have to try to tell you (for my own integrity as much as yours) that a Door is about to Close behind you, Anthony Blair. Either you take the path that will lead to you becoming a Great Man (the one Tony Benn is now on) and begin to develop what is still so far only a ‘potential’ (you are the same age as I) or you descend into cynical compromised emptiness, just another example of failed political morality, and you will die like a dog. When the whole world was in your palm! But, if you and Alistair and the amazing team you have assembled, can remember yourselves, hold to your self respect and your courage, stick to what deep, simple and obvious principles you have retained (and I know you both think/hope that you have, and you have!) and TAKE A STAND against the madness, you will uncap a wellspring of planet wide public support that will not only keep you Britain’s prime minister for as long as you choose, but could certainly see you as the UN’s general secretary in a decade, with a Real Nobel prize for peace, and a giddyingly honoured place in history. You know that that is your true direction. Don’t listen to the Devil in your ear, for that way lies depression, self-disgust, loss of direction, early ageing, and a life of quiet luxuried defeat for everything your former friends and allies on the Left have said about you will have beeen vindicated! You will be seen as having really been selling out all along! And those further tens of thousands of dead men, women, children, cats and dogs and goats will be part of your personal karma. Prime Minister, you have spent a decade now building a sane, intelligent, responsible and sophisticated electorate here in Britain, who will certainly back your refusal all the way if you are brave enough to make it. The Amnerican public will soon turn against Bush and you will be the friend in need who bravely told the truth! Nor need you worry about the Tories outflanking you on the right if you draw back. You are much bigger than that now, in your own and in the electorate’s eyes. You’ve got your two terms. Think bigger. Think globally! Act for Humankind. Act for the Future! (and listen to Clare.) The Prescription Access Litigation (PAL) Project, a coalition of more than 60 organisations, has sued to undo an agreement between Bayer, Barr Laboratories and two other generic drug companies it alleges is blocking access to cheaper, generic versions of Cipro, one of the leading antibiotics used to treat anthrax. PAL charges that Bayer has unlawfully paid three of its competitors - Barr Laboratories, Rugby, and Hoechst-Marion Roussel - $200 million to NOT bring cheaper generic versions of Cipro to the market. The anthrax outbreak created a public relations bonanza for the company when the Secretary of Health and Human Services announced he wanted to stockpile a supply for 10 million people. When Democratic Senator Charles Schumer and consumer groups demanded the government purchase generic versions of Cipro, which Indian companies could produce for less than a twentieth of Bayer’s drugstore price and less than a ninth of its price to the government, Thompson and Bayer entered into furious negotiations and agreed a price of 95 cents a tablet. “We are grateful that our researchers developed a product that is crucial in this hour of need,” said Bayer Corporation’s Pharmaceutical N.A.
