THEORY PROVED IN LAB
HALF A TON of extraterrestrial "stuff"
falls on planet Earth every day. Much of it is in organic form -
vital chemicals like water, alcohol, formaldehyde, methane, hydrogen
cyanide and many more, plus more complex hydrocarbons and amino acids
(PLUS psychedelic mushroom spores according to
Terence
McKenna but that's enuff of that for now!).
Though the Swedish chemist
Arrhenius
came up with the name
"Panspermia"
to describe how the chemistry of Life on
Earth existed in space,
Lucretius had 2
thousand years earlier described a universe teeming with
"Life Seeds".
But it was probably UK astronomer
Fred Hoyle
who first suggested that the "triggers" for Life might (indeed
mathematically must) have come from a passing comet.
And now NASA
scientists have succeeded in creating significant aspects of Life in the
conditions of deep space. Working with a team from
UCLA, they
introduced ammonia, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and methanol into the
freeze vacuum of space in the lab. When they then exposed the
consequent "primordial ice slush" to the harsh ultraviolet
radiation of Outer Space (which sceptics of the
Panspermia
Theory had claimed would kill any life), they
found that "the process transforms some of the simple chemicals
in space into larger molecules which, many believe, is when chemistry
becomes biology"

QUESTIONS TO
PONDER: Could apes and humans have
developed from different "Life Seeds"? Where did
these "Seeds" come from? Who sent the Comet in the first
place? From where? Will Life on all other planets be
relatively similar therefore? Who put Life into the Seeds in the
first place?
