am i losing the plot or wot?
remind me again, why exactly are a small army of foreign troops hunting mullah omar through the mountains of his homeland like a rabid dog? what did he do? wasn’t he the leader of some country where our president asked us to take on trust that the bad guy(s) was hiding? osama and the tali- no, the alqueda, right?
and, correct me if i’m wrong, didn’t our president, on our behalf, demand that mullah omar capture this guy bin handle and hand him over (that’s the one we couldn’t find either as it turned out, using the strongest biggest army on the planet). right? he was the leader of a proudly independent country where our president reckoned this bad guy was hiding out.
now bear with me. didn’t this independent leader of a fiercely independent country demand some kind of evidence before he would arrest and deport one of his country’s greatest war heroes and liberators? but our president told him he had the same clear choice he’s been offering everyone else on ‘our side’:
u getta billion or u get bommed, and a week to decide b4 we went in there and got him ourselves, right? the bush-saddam syndrome. something like that?
i’m sure that’s how it went, certainly there are loadsa northern alliance war lords blazing around that country whassitsname in the latest hi-tec killer jeeps shooting bazookas in the air and lighting their heroin joints with freshly minted dollar bills and sticks of dynamite if they still come on sticks :)
well, he was too honourable to be bought, and too loyal to his old allies, so we smashed our way through his raggle-taggle army of trainee telly-banner priests, and we started digging and bomming real hard to find these al queda guys and we found a few dozen, right? and i distinctly remember we bommed this mullah’s “private residence” the first night and killed some of his “family members,” right? and we damn near caught osama, we think!
so what i can’t understand is:
why are we hunting ex-president mullah omar around the place like he’s a wounded jackal or a goddamn redskin or a black slave on the run that we’re using for target practice? along with that very nice, quiet spoken, bearded ex-afghan ambassador to pakistan, what the hell is he being ‘arrested’ for? for resisting america’s invasion?! nobody ever said either had done anything wrong, did they? we were after osama and his gang of terrorists, right? what’s omar got to do with that, except that he insisted on ‘proof’ or 3rd country or UN involvement to settle our complaint?
seems to me that when we’ve finished hunting our bad guys through his country, we should lay some cash on him to rebuild the place and leave him to get on with governing it. no? maybe i’ve just lost the plot somewhere?

what kind of god allows this slaughter?
Regardless of religion or colour, every mother who watches her child die suffers the same pain. Everyday we see countless children die who could be our children. This killing insanity must end. An Israeli mother cries the same tears as a Palestinian, an American the same as an Afghan. All over the world mothers see their sons go into war for purposes they no longer understand, for the purposes of other people and other powers.

Is this insanity the consequence of age-old wars of religions, started by the patriarchy fighting the holy sources of life?
The legend of the Old Testament tells us that God forbade human insight and sexuality by driving humans from paradise. What kind of disheveled god is this that man put at the height of creation?! It was the beginning
of a cruel development. From then on men had to suppress other religions,
confiscate land and knowledge and destroy female sources. Priests had to
fight against sensuality, the old knowledge of life, body culture and plant knowledge. They had to take the women's key - which they needed for life themselves - by force. They had to demonise, torture and hunt women in order to unfold their male power.
Just as a woman can never be owned, so the earth can be owned by no one. The earth will provide for those who are willing to cooperate. We women will love those who protect and care for all life on earth. We came to love our sons, our men and all life, not to destroy or hate any life.

Stand up against a system which considers the massacre of humans and animals normal. We cannot watch in silence when innocent beings in Chechnya, Afghanistan or Angola are sacrificed for the interest of the global economy.
We, also, cannot be silent about the quiet genocide taking place under the eyes of the world in
Palestine. We have to accept that the Palestinian suicide assassinations result from the desperation of a people whose land, water, olive trees, work and housing are being stolen from them.

Not terrorists, but the existing systems of power manipulation make up the net of global violence. The terror of individual assassins is a reaction to the terror of those systems. Therefore we cannot leave it to governments and parties to end the violence; they will not do it.
Those killing each other now could be friends. Originally they carried within them the same life, love, and longing for comfort and faith as all of us. They were all cheated of these ideals. There will not be peace on earth (“security”) as long as we create enemies. Together we have to find ways of leaving a system that persistently reproduces violence. All who agree have to join forces for a powerful worldwide movement regardless of political party, religion or race.
The globalisation of violence must be answered by the globalisation of peace.

no armageddon?
there’s been a fair amount of talk recently about how people expected some kinda holocaust when the american army went into afghanistan, but it hasn’t happened.
so i thought back to that time and it wasn’t some gigantic nuclear armageddon i actually feared the B(R)USH TO JUDGMENT would set off (which looks anyway like happening). no, the feeling of ‘holocaust’ we now recall was that dreadful sense of all the hopes of the new millennium being dashed so rapidly, and the world descending instead into an “eternity,” a “lifetime” of low (or even high) grade terrorism at home and endless civil and guerilla daisycuttings abroad.
well, i’m sorry to tell you that our greatest fear, our actual fear, is coming true. unless the peace movement gets building real fast and soon, our society is descending gradually (and without perceiving it happening) into alienation-, suicide-, and depression-driven random acts of sabotage, nihilism, hate, and a daily diet of low grade government war spin and propaganda.
the “bush” fires in australia, for example, might be appropriately named, no? since they’re members of the coalition, how come nobody’s even mentioned terrorism,
even to deny it?!! and that new york cathedral that blazed big time? how come nobody even officially denied it was terrorist revenge, nor any reporter even asked?! with terrorists giving up claiming responsibility, have governments stopped announcing a terrorist connection?
then there were the terror ship scares at the beginning of christmas week. and the shooting up of the indian parliament? and the other plane that crashed in brooklyn, do you believe it wasn’t terrorist revenge?!
shoe bomms, 15 year old kids crashing small cessnas into bank of america towers, we’re not only slipping down a slippery slope, we’re already well down it into a daily diet of lies & loathing, self-hatred and dread.

PUTTING ON A SUCCESSFUL CLUB, OR ANY OTHER PROJECT,
IS EVEN MORE IMPOSSIBLE THAN STANDING UP STRAIGHT
UNLESS WE DISCOVER AND THEN PROCURE THE MEANS
(dedicated to brian :)
There’s a superstition current among even cultivated persons who suppose that, if one is told what to do, if the right end is pointed out to them, all that’s required in order to bring about the right act is will or wish on the part of the one who’s to act.
But it’s totally untrue, as we can see if we break the act down to its very smallest cog, that of physical posture. The assumption there is that if a man is told to stand up straight, all that is further needed is wish and effort on his part, and the deed is done. This belief is on a par with primitive magic in its neglect of attention to the means which are involved in reaching an end. The prevalence of this belief, starting with false notions about the control of the body and extending to control of the mind and character, is the greatest bar to intelligent social progress. It bars the way because it makes us neglect intelligent enquiry to discover the means which will produce a desired result, and intelligent invention to procure the means.
Consider the assumptions that are being made. It is implied that the means or effective conditions of the realisation of a purpose exist independent of established habit, and even that they may be set in motion in opposition to habit. Since it is assumed that means are there, the failure to stand erect must be wholly a matter of failure of purpose and desire. It needs paralysis or a broken leg or some other equally gross phenomenon to make some people appreciate the importance of objective conditions.
Conditions have been formed for producing a bad result, and the bad result will occur as long as the conditions exist. They can no more be dismissed by a direct effort of will than the conditions that create drought can be dispelled by whistling for wind. It’s as reasonable to expect a fire to go out when ordered to do so as to suppose that a man can stand straight (or organise a successful club) in consequence of a direct thought and desire. Just as the fire can be put out only by changing the objective conditions, so with rectification of bad posture.
Of course, something happens when a man acts upon his idea of standing straight. For a little while, he stands differently, but only a different kind of badly :) He then takes the unaccustomed feeling which accompanies his unusual stance as evidence that he is now standing right. But there are many ways of standing badly, and he has simply shifted his usual way to a compensatory bad way at some other extreme.
Even after we get to the point of recognising that habits must intervene between wish and execution in the case of bodily acts, we still cherish the illusion that they can be dispensed with in the case of mental or moral acts. Yet suppose that by a happy chance a right concrete idea or purpose concrete, not simply correct in words has been hit upon: what happens when you try to act in accord with it with an incorrect habit? Clearly the idea can be carried into exaction only with a mechanism already there. If this is defective or perverted, the best intention in the world will yield bad results. In the case of no other engine does one suppose that a defective machine will turn out goods simply because it is invited to. Everywhere else we recognize that the design and structure of the agency employed tell directly on the work done.

STILL THINK IT’S ALL OVER?
There was a widely held view a few weeks ago that the core of the al-Qaeda network was isolated in the Tora Bora region and that its destruction was imminent. Moreover, the Taliban as a whole was comprehensively defeated, its leaders were likely to be captured and, with this defeat, Afghanistan would return to peace for the first time in more than two decades. Furthermore, all this had been achieved with a minimum of civilian casualties.

THE FATE OF AL-QAEDA
There is reasonably accurate evidence of substantial al-Qaeda casualties in the Tora Bora region, with possibly as many as 200 people being killed, partly through the intensive area bombing by the US, and partly through the action of anti-Taliban militia, working with US and UK special forces. At the same time, though, up to 1,500, or possibly more, have escaped the immediate area, many moving into Pakistan.
Osama bin Laden has escaped capture, and there remains a persistent fear that much of the key leadership of al-Qaida had left Afghanistan around September 11, with many others leaving in late October as the intensity of the US military action became apparent.
With much support for al-Qaida and the Taliban in north-west Pakistan, it would therefore be possible for the network to retain much of its structure. In any case, it is worth recalling the early reports, shortly after September 11, that the network was effectively a loose coalition of groups that was fully internationalised, both drawing support from, and operating in, many countries across the world.
In a sense, the US action against the Taliban and those elements of al-Qaida in Afghanistan was actually the most feasible part of a much wider range of actions. Moreover it served a substantial domestic purpose, being likely to prove popular in a country that, even three months after the event, remained deeply affected by the aftermath of the 11 September attacks.

EFFECTS OF THE BOMBING
With the scaling down of the air campaign, it has proved possible to get some indications of its effects. As far as can be established, around 10,000 tons of munitions were used in the first eleven weeks, much of it unguided “dumb” bombs used in area bombing by B-52 and B-1B strategic bombers operating from the US base on the British-controlled island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean.
Repeated early reports indicated substantial civilian casualties but many were suggests that over
3,000 civilians have been killed by the bombing. Other analysts suggest that Taliban militia casualties may number around 5,000, together with several hundred al-Qaida militia. Overall, the death toll may be around 12,000, with one-quarter of those dying in the original attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon.
Furthermore, in Afghanistan itself, there is a degree of stability in Kabul and some of the larger towns, but this has been accompanied by a rapid revival of warlordism and banditry in much of the country. The small UN-backed stabilisation force in Kabul may eventually extend to a few other centres of population, but
it would require many tens of thousands of troops to bring order to the country as a whole. There is no international commitment to such a programme.
In any case, this would be unacceptable to the Pentagon, which is concerned primarily to continue the search for the Taliban and al-Qaida leadership, insofar as it is still in Afghanistan. This determination even extends to having ensured that the international force, ostensibly led by the UK, is under the final command of the Pentagon.
Since the easing of large-scale fighting, it has been possible for aid agencies to move food supplies into some of the larger cities,
but it has proved much more difficult to transport them into areas in real need. Given that Afghanistan is essentially a country of towns, villages and small farms, what happens in the cities is not indicative of realities across the country. This potentially false picture is strengthened by the lack of reporting by western journalists, an understandable reaction given that eight journalists have already been killed during this war.

WHERE ARE THE TALIBAN?
It is possible to account for, at the most 12,000 members of the Taliban militia, including those in captivity, and perhaps 1-2,000 al-Qaida members, very few of the latter being in captivity. What has been surprising is that very few people, either from the Taliban or al-Qaida, have been taken into custody by the United States, either in the hastily constructed prison near Kandahar or on warships in the Arabia Sea. Given that the Taliban could call on at least 50,000 armed militia and a fairly dispersed leadership, the key question arises where have they gone?
In that connection, it is worth recalling, once again, that many of the apparent battles in the war were actually rapid occupations of particular towns and cities by diverse anti-Taliban militia following the effective retreat of Taliban forces. This supports the view that, for the most part,
Taliban militia have simply melted back into local communities, with their arms and munitions largely intact.
This leads to the key questions as to whether the Taliban retains any cohesion and whether some units are still present as coherent fighting groups in some more remote areas. If so, and it is at least likely, then efforts may be made next spring to resume control of parts of the Pashtun areas, especially if the new government fails to bring stability to the country.
This is an uncomfortable analysis for those who have assumed the war to be at an end, but it is supported by three factors.
One, so little of the Taliban and al-Qaida forces have been destroyed.
Two, there is accumulating evidence that many have moved into Pakistan.
Three, the one group that is not claiming that the war in Afghanistan is over is the Pentagon itself. More US troops have been moved into the country, two secure bases have now been established in the South, and there is every sign that longer-term operations are planned.

THE DEMOCRATIC LEVIATHAN
A recent poll (by Andrews McKenna Research) asked an interesting question and was rewarded with an interesting answer:
“WHICH DO YOU WORRY ABOUT MORE: RECEIVING AN AUDIT NOTICE FROM THE IRS IN THE MAIL [OR] RECEIVING ANTHRAX IN THE MAIL?” The IRS beat anthrax handily 50% to 32% And the IRS did it without the benefit of hysterical publicity.
This little datum throws a blinding beam of light on the phrase
“terrorist state.” The modern state is, in essence, a terrorist organization. At this point we can hardly imagine any other kind of state.
The prophet of the terrorist state was
Thomas Hobbes (15881679), author of Leviathan. Hobbes argued that men were driven by appetite and aversion, and would exist in a state of mutual war - “every man against every man” - without a common power, the state, to “keep them all in awe.” He conceived the ruler as strongman, and the subject as living in fear. It was a profoundly amoral view of law and governance. The subject obeyed the ruler out of fear for his life.
Hobbes’s doctrine shocked people who had grown up in the Christian tradition, which held that divine or natural law, not human will, must justify positive law.
St. Thomas Aquinas and others had taught that any law contrary to divine or natural law was invalid; this is the basis of limited, constitutional government.
But Hobbes saw law as nothing more than the ruler’s will. There could be no moral limit on it. This doctrine leads logically to the modern totalitarian state, which must be obeyed no matter what it demands. People obey the
Leviathan State because they are afraid of it, not because they regard its demands as morally right.
The modern state at its most hysterical is portrayed in
George Orwell’s great novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. Orwell realized that modern conditions had made possible, and very real, a Leviathan that went far, far beyond anything Hobbes could have imagined. No seventeenth-century ruler enjoyed the weaponry, financial power, bureaucracy, or instruments of propaganda and surveillance available to a Stalin or a Franklin Roosevelt. In Hobbes’s day, and long after, a residue of personal liberty could still be taken for granted. The complete abolition of privacy was inconceivable.
That has changed. We now accept the regime of fear as normal.
Not that today’s United States outwardly resembles Stalin’s Soviet Union. But the principle is the same. The state rules arbitrarily, amorally, threatening penalties for disobedience. You may get a bland, impersonal form letter from the
IRS or any other agency informing you that you are “subject to” fine and imprisonment for “failure to comply.” That’s not a gun at your head, but it’s a threat all the same - from someone you’ve never met who has unspecified power over you. I once knew a woman in her nineties who received such a letter. It spoiled her whole day.
In the 1830s
Alexis de Tocqueville, after visiting America, foresaw the emergence of a new and mild-seeming kind of “democratic” despotism - a centralized state, without overt terrors or tortures, ruling through “a network of petty, complicated rules,” which might be “combined, more easily than is generally supposed, with the external forms of freedom.” How right he was.
Under such a regime, the individual may feel little terror and may even feel free.
He becomes like a cow in a pasture surrounded by an electric fence. The cow feels an unpleasant jolt the first time she brushes against the fence, but it doesn’t kill her; after a spasm or two of terror, she just gets in the habit of staying away from it, and ceases to think about it. The active feeling of fear soon goes away, but the habit of avoidance remains.
A state that threatens violence too openly may rouse the population to resistance and revolution. But a state that threatens lesser penalties with subtlety and apparent legality, gradually creating habits of timidity, may find little opposition. Its subjects will hardly recognize their own fear as fear. They may even believe the state when it assures them that they are free - and that it is “
Defending” their “Freedom!” (until they “fail to comply,” that is.)
Terror tempered by tact - that’s the secret of ruling most men. Leave them some freedoms until they’ve forgotten what liberty means. Then you can suavely pocket the rest.

“FREE YOUR SPIRITS!”
Haidar, chief of all the sheikhs, practised many exercises of devotion and mortification; he took but little nourishment, carried to a surprising extent the detachment from all worldly things, and was of an extraordinary piety. On a neighbouring mountain near the city of his birth, Khorasan, he established a convent where a great number of devotees gathered around him. He lived alone in a corner of this convent, and spent more than a decade in this manner, never going out, never seeing anyone at all except me, when I was acting as his servant.
One very hot day at noon the sheikh walked out alone, and when he returned to the convent, we saw on his face an statement of joy and gaiety very different from what we were used to see there: he allowed his fellow devotees to come and visit him and began to converse with them. When we saw the sheikh so humanised after so long, we asked him the cause.
“While I was on retreat” he replied “it occurred to my spirit to go out alone into the countryside. When I had done so I noticed that all the plants were in a perfect calm, not experiencing the least agitation because of the extreme heat untempered by the slightest breath of wind.
“But passing by a certain plant covered with foliage I observed that, in that air, it was moving softly from side to side with a soft, light movement, like a man dizzied by wine fumes. I began to gather this plant’s leaves and to eat them, and they have produced in me the gaiety. Come with me, then, that I may teach you to know it.”
So we followed him into the countryside, and he showed us the plant. We told him, on seeing it, that it was a plant they call hemp. On his orders, we ate the leaves, and once back in the convent experienced in ourselves the same gay, joyous disposition that he had found impossible to hide from us. When the sheikh saw us in that state, he made us promise on oath never to reveal it to ordinary men and never to hide it from religious men.
“God Almighty” he told us “has granted you, as a special favour, an awareness of the virtues of this leaf, so that your use of it will dissipate the cares that obscure your souls and free your spirits from everything that might hamper them. Keep carefully then the deposit he has confided in you, and be faithful in hiding the precious secret he has committed to you.”

Sheikh Haidar lived for ten more years after this event; during all this time not a day went by that he did not use this leaf. and he recommended us to eat little food and to take the herb instead. He died in the year 1221AD. Before his death he had recommended to his companions to tell their secret to the most distinguished people of the province, and by instructing them in the virtues of the plant they adopted its use. Thus hashish spread rapidly In Khorasan and in the various departments of Fars province, but they knew nothing about its use in Iraq. until the year 1231AD. At that time two princes, whose states were among the maritime countries situated on the Persian Gulf, the Sovereign of Ormuz and the Prince of Bahrain, having come into Iraq, men of their retinue brought with them some hashish and taught the Iraquis to eat it. The drug spread in Iraq, and the people of Syria, Egypt and the lands of Rum, having heard of it, took up the use of it.

STILL THINK IT’S ALL OVER?
Victory in Afghanistan” comes at the expense of stability and many, many innocent lives: it is a Pyrrhic victory at best.
To recognize death is to recognize life. But the Afghan dead are not even given that recognition. They are 'disputed figures'. 'Taliban propaganda claims'. We are given some numbers: how many cruise missiles, how many Daisy Cutters, how many sorties, the diameters, the flight distances, the co-ordinates. These numbers make the war as real as a video-game. And the casualties we only know as 'lies'.
The main objective of the war on Afghanistan, according to President Bush in his initial speeches, has still not been accomplished. Osama bin Laden is still at large.
The Taliban regime has been overthrown. But is a little less repression really the major victory that we were told to expect? Is it freedom?

Meanwhile, anti-American sentiment, and even hate, has certainly not been wiped out by the war on Afghanistan. Inviting future terrorism is not a victory against it.

THE MOUNTING CASUALTIES
Innocent civilians in Afghanistan, who had no more to do with the terrorist attacks than you or I, are another sad consequence of "winning" the war. The estimated number of lives lost by innocent Afghan civilians now is greater than the number of lives lost in the September 11 attacks (and that’s not including thousands of dead Taliban priests and soldiers whom we intended to slaughter)
Meanwhile, despite the growing death toll, the bombing continues.
One of the targets of the bombings that occurred over the holidays was a wedding on Dec. 29.
According to some reports, U.S. forces also gunned down fleeing civilians from helicopters during the Dec. 29 incident.
http://www.9-11peace.org/r.php3?redir=73

OTHER CASUALTIES: THE WAR ON DRUGS
America's new war has also destroyed hopes for the success of the formerly important "war on drugs," at least as far as Afghanistan is concerned. The drug trade has been revitalized by the American attacks, as Afghan farmers begin to plant poppies once again.

OTHER CASUALTIES: THE MID-EAST PEACE
The Israeli/Palestinian peace process has also been basically demolished. Israel has appropriated the "war on terrorism" rhetoric of America to justify its actions against Palestine, while the States have remained a strong backer of the Israeli regime, despite its history of human rights abuses.

OTHER CASUALTIES: PAKISTAN-INDIA NUCLEAR WAR?
Finally, perhaps the most dangerous consequence of America's military actions in Afghanistan has been the escalation of tensions between Pakistan and India, tensions that have placed the region on the brink of full-blown nuclear war.

"The Achilles heel of American Empire is its peculiar belief that the people we conquer are better off for it, and love us for enslaving them. The British and Mongols and Romans would never have dreamed of such a conceit, but America has justified its atrocities thusly from the Indian wars to the
present".

It also appears that, rather than moving troops out of the area now that the war has been "won," the American military is preparing for a long stay in the region around Afghanistan.
These US bases, which are popping up in countries ringing Afghanistan, are likely to "
stir resentment among Muslims" and make future terrorist attacks more likely.
