LIE 1. "The evidence indicates that Iraq is reconstituting its nuclear weapons program ... Iraq has attempted to purchase high-strength aluminum tubes and other equipment need for gas centrifuges, which are used to enrich uranium for nuclear weapons." President Bush, Oct. 7, 2002. . FACT:: One intelligence analyst, who was part of the tubes investigation, angrily told The New Republic: "You had senior American officials like Condoleeza Rice saying the only use of this aluminum really is uranium centrifuges. She said that on television. And that's just a lie." LIE 2.. "The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa." President Bush, Jan.28, 2003. FACT: This was based on a document the White House already knew was a forgery thanks to the CIA. The ex-ambassador, sent by the CIA to check the story, is pissed: "The White House were unpersuasive about aluminum tubes and added this to make their case more strongly."
LIE 3. "We believe Saddam has, in fact, reconstituted nuclear weapons." Vice President Cheney on March 16, 2003. FACT: There was and is absolutely zero basis for this statement. CIA reports up through 2002 showed no evidence of an Iraqi nuclear weapons program.
LIE 4. "The CIA possesses solid reporting of senior-level contacts between Iraq and al-Qaeda going back a decade." CIA Director George Tenet, Oct. 7, 2002, and echoed that evening by President Bush. FACT: Intelligence agencies, though aware of tentative contacts between Saddam and al-Qaeda in the early '90s, had found no proof of a continuing relationship. This was tweaked 180 degrees to say exactly the opposite!
LIE 5. "We've learned that Iraq has trained al-Qaeda members in bomb-making and poisons and deadly gases ... Alliance with terrorists could allow the Iraqi regime to attack America without leaving any fingerprints." President Bush, Oct. 7, 2002. FACT: No evidence has ever been leaked or produced, and Colin Powell was hugely embarrassed when he told the U.N. the alleged training took place in a camp in northern Iraq which was later revealed to be outside Iraq's control and patrolled by Allied war planes.
LIE 6.. "We have also discovered through intelligence that Iraq has a growing fleet of manned and unmanned aerial vehicles that could be used to disperse chemical or biological weapons across broad areas. We are concerned that Iraq is exploring ways of using these unmanned aerial vehicles for missions targeting the United States." President Bush, Oct. 7, 2002. FACT: They fly 300 miles max; Iraq is 6000 miles from the U.S. Besides, Iraq's drone-building program was as advanced as your average model plane enthusiast’s. And isn't a "manned aerial vehicle" just a scary way to say "plane"?
LIE 7.: "We have seen intelligence over many months that they have chemical and biological weapons, and that they have dispersed them and that they're weapon zed and that, in one case at least, the command and control arrangements have been established." -- President Bush, Feb. 8, 2003. FACT: Despite a massive nationwide search (and several bluffs) there are no signs, traces or examples of chemical weapons being deployed in the field, or anywhere else during the war.
LIE 8. "Our conservative estimate is that Iraq today has a stockpile of between 100 and 500 tons of chemical weapons agent. That is enough to fill 16,000 battlefield rockets." -- Secretary of State Colin Powell, Feb. 5 2003. FACT: Not a drop of this massive stockpile has been found. And besides, intelligence reports show that these stocks - if they existed - were well past their use-by date and useless as weapon fodder.
LIE 9.: "We know where Iraq's WMD are. They're in the area around Tikrit and Baghdad and east, west, south, and north somewhat." Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, March 30, 2003. FACT: We seek 'em north, we seek ‘em south and east somewhat.
LIE 10. "Yes, we found a biological laboratory in Iraq which the UN prohibited." President Bush in remarks in Poland, published internationally June 1, 2003. FACT: This refers to the two modified truck trailers which the CIA stopped claiming were mobile biological weapons labs when British and American experts declared this to be untrue. Much to Tony Blair's embarrassment, the trailers are exactly what Iraq said they were, facilities to fill weather balloons which Britain sold them!
5 hours after the 9/11 hijacked plane slammed into the Pentagon, retired Gen. Wesley Clark received a call from someone he won’t name but representing the White House position: "I was on CNN, and I got a call at my home saying, 'You got to say this is connected. This is state-sponsored terrorism. This has to be connected to Saddam Hussein,'" Clark told Meet the Press anchor Tim Russert. "I said, 'But - I'm willing to say it, but what's your evidence?' And I never got any evidence.'"

I mean, every time I read about some new directionhe plans totake, it will, without exception, hurt the people of our country. “Educated” people who are identified more with their Intellectual Brain focus on George W Bush’s near-moronic use of language and totally overlook his mastery of emotional language as a political tool especially negatively charged emotional language. His political success is the predictable result of his intentional use of language to dominate others.

Negative Frameworking
Poll after poll demonstrates that the “Bush Agenda” is out of step with most Americans' core beliefs. Yet the public is susceptible to Bush's most frequently used linguistic technique: negative framework.
A negative framework is a pessimistic image of the world. Bush creates and maintains negative frameworks in his listeners' minds with a number of linguistic techniques borrowed from advertising and hypnosis to instil the image of a dark and evil world around us. Catastrophic words and phrases are repeatedly drilled into the listener's head until the opposition feels such a high level of anxiety that it appears pointless to do anything other than cower.
Psychologist Martin Seligman, in his extensive studies of "learned helplessness," showed that people's motivation to respond to outside problems is undermined by a belief that they have no control over their environment. Learned helplessness is exacerbated by beliefs that problems caused by negative events are permanent; and when the underlying causes are perceived to apply also to many other events, the condition becomes pervasive and paralysing.
Subsequent terror alerts by the FBI, CIA and Department of Homeland Security have expanded this fear of unknown, sinister enemies.
Contrast this rhetoric with Franklin Roosevelt's speech after Pearl Harbour: "No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.... There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory and our interests are in grave danger. With confidence in our armed forces with the unbounded determination of our people we will gain the inevitable triumph so help us God." Roosevelt focuses on an optimistic future rather than a ”continuing threat “.

Exploding the Big Bang
If light from stars or galaxies is passed through a prism, a spectrum is obtained, consisting of a series of lines and bands. These spectra can be used to identify the atomic elements present in the objects concerned, as each element has a distinct spectral "signature." But if we compare the spectral lines of distant galaxies with those produced by the same elements on earth, we find that in every case the lines are displaced towards longer (redder) wavelengths.
It’s known as the redshift, and is the subject of increasingly intense controversy.
The majority of astronomers and cosmologists subscribe to the Big Bang Theory, and interpret the redshift to mean that all galaxies are flying apart at high speed and therefore that the universe is expanding.
However, a growing minority of scientists maintain that the redshift is produced by other causes, and that the universe is not expanding. As astronomer Halton Arp remarks in Seeing Red: Redshifts, Cosmology and Academic Science, ”one side must be completely and catastrophically wrong.”
Tired-Light Theory
G. de Purucker rejected the theory of an expanding universe or expanding space as "little short of being a scientific pipe-dream or fairy-tale," and suggested that the redshift might be caused by light losing energy during its long voyage through space.
The Tired-Light, Non-Expanding-Universe Model explains the data much better than the Expanding-Universe Hypothesis, so concluded Paul LaViolette and Tom Van Flandern who reviewed several observational tests of the different interpretations of the redshift.
To bring the Big Bang model into line with actual observations, constant adjustments have to be made to its "free parameters" (i.e., fudge factors).
Seeing Red
Numerous examples of galaxies at the same distance having very different redshifts are given in the landmark book Seeing Red by Halton Arp, who works at the Max Planck Institut fur Astrophysik in Germany.
He also gives many examples of how, for over 30 years, establishment astronomers and cosmologists have systematically tried to ignore, dismiss, ridicule, and suppress this evidence - for it is fatal to the hypothesis of an expanding universe (and much that follows from that). Like other opponents of the Big Bang, he has encountered great difficulties getting articles published in mainstream journals, and his requests for time on ground-based and space telescopes are frequently rejected.
Arp argues that redshift is primarily a function of age, and that tired light plays no more than a secondary role. He presents abundant observational evidence to show that low-redshift galaxies sometimes eject high-redshift quasars in opposite directions, which then evolve into progressively lower-redshift objects and finally into normal galaxies. Ejected galaxies can, in turn, eject or fission into smaller objects, in a cascading process.
Within galaxies, the youngest, brightest stars also have excess redshifts. The reason all distant galaxies are redshifted is because we see them when they were much younger, as they were when light left them.
About seven local galaxies are blueshifted. The orthodox view is that they must be moving towards us even faster than the universe is expanding, but in Arp's theory, they are simply older than our own galaxy as we see them.
In addition to the redshift, another important piece of "evidence" for the Big Bang is said to be the cosmic microwave background radiation of 2.7 kelvins, which is supposedly the afterglow of the primordial explosion. Arp, however, argues that the extraordinary smoothness of the background radiation provides strong evidence against an expanding universe. A much simpler explanation is that we are seeing the temperature of the intergalactic medium.
Current expanding-universe theory seems headed for oblivion, but the large number of professionals with vested interests in its preservation means that its demise is likely to take a very long time.
The idea that space can expand like elastic is one of the many illogical features of the standard Big Bang model. Space must be infinite, for if it is finite, where does it end and what lies beyond? If space is infinite, then clearly it cannot expand for, as H. P. Blavatsky says, "infinite extension admits of no enlargement." It's true that Big Bangers have concocted a theory which allows space to curve round upon itself so that it is both finite and boundless - but this merely indicates the extent to which they have abandoned reality in favour of abstract mathematical theorising. >> Disappearing up your own ass is a more scientific way of putting it.
Arp is one of a growing number of scientists who are returning to the idea of an infinite, eternal universe, subject to constant transformations, where matter is being created continually from a all-pervading "quantum sea" or "zero-point field." The universe, he says, is constantly unfolding from many different points within itself.
WHAT DO WE REALLY KNOW?
What do we know about what lies beyond our Local Group of galaxies? Mainstream cosmologists insist that we know a great deal because powerful telescopes reveal many faint, fuzzy objects with high redshifts that are assumed to represent distant clusters and superclusters, which form immense sheets of galaxies, separated by huge voids.
But, given the misinterpretation of the redshift, distances may be wrong by factors of 10 to 100, and luminosities and masses may be wrong by factors up to 10,000!!
“An enormous amount of modern telescope time and staff is devoted to measuring redshifts of faint smudges on the sky” says Arp. "We would have a totally erroneous picture of extragalactic space, and be faced with one of the most embarrassing boondoggles in our intellectual history"
He presents many pieces of evidence indicating that some faint "galaxy clusters" actually consist of young objects ejected from nearby active galaxies. The same applies to most of the rather peculiar-looking objects to be seen in the "Hubble Deep Field," a famous image of very high-redshift and supposedly extremely distant galaxies.
We may be seeing far less of the universe than is generally believed. Even some of Arp's closest allies are very reluctant to contemplate the possibility that the cosmic distance scale as a whole is seriously wrong. Whether Arp's radical views will be confirmed remains to be seen, but he is undoubtedly right when he says:
"We are certainly not at the end of science. Most probably we are just at the beginning!"

To understand marriage you have to ask what it is that we need marriagefor (the actual ritual as opposed to the duration).
It’s a declaration to your families, the blood lines of which we are a part, that a newconnection has formed and could result in more life (ie baby). This is important.
I think this is the least we can do for our ancestors and our family in terms of respect.
It’s a societal validation procedure.
I too don't believe in marriage as such as all relationships are important, from the sun on your skin to your lover'sarms.
But the 'sacredness' of such an eventin your life, as an initiation, should not be missed out on just because you don't believe in the normal sanctification via religious or governmental means.
When you’ve arrived at a place in your heart where you’ve outgrown (or never wanted) society’s validation then where do you go for sacred defining moments?
My wife and i had a wrist-binding ceremony by a wiccan priest. This was not approved by the law as he had no congregation. But we had a great day at the beach with our families and danced until dawn. This was the closest thing to our spirituality that i could find, even though I don't practise paganism as a religion.
What matters is that you can still have a spiritual blessing even if you have to make it up yourself.
Because it's all spirit.

STARVING TO DEATH?
Swiss professor and political analyst Jean Ziegler recently travelled to the occupied territories to prepare a report for the UN General Assembly. Ziegler reports that Israel has caused a humanitarian disaster of shocking proportions. By blocking food delivery, shutting off water, and destroying agricultural land, Israel has not only prevented the Palestinian people from being able to feed themselves, it is preventing outside sources from providing food for Palestinians. The result is serious, widespread malnutrition, which is leading to impaired development among children.
Ziegler does not consider Israel’s action to be malicious in intent. But whatever the motives or lack of motives, it is nonetheless true that the people of Israel have made a collective social decision to violate international law and deprive a civilian population under their protection of basic nutrition.

How Washington Set The Stage For War
Established in 1847 by wealthy Americans determined to rid the U.S. of slaves by sending them to Africa, Liberia functioned as a virtual American colony, ruled by a tiny elite of the descendants of former slaves. Known as Americo-Liberians, they worked with U.S. companies like Firestone, which established the world's largest rubber plantation there in 1926, while the indigenous population remained impoverished.
During the Cold War, Liberia, despite its small population -- still only 3 million today -- became a key outpost for U.S. efforts to undermine national liberation movements and prop up pro-Washington dictators in the name of fighting communism.
In 1980, Master Sgt. Samuel Doe took power in a coup against the Americo-Liberian elite, and, when the Reagan administration took over the White House, it immediately flooded the new regime with millions of dollars in aid, in exchange for help in its efforts to destabilise nearby Libya.
Doe ruled through assassinations, repression and fraud. Once the Cold War was over, the U.S. cut him loose, and he was assassinated by rebel forces in 1990. “Master-Sergeant Doe is the latest victim of imperial euthanasia," wrote Nigerian journalist Tunji Lardner. "He died because his treatment was withheld by the United States and his life-support system shut off."
After a civil war in the early 1990s, the power vacuum was eventually filled by Charles Taylor, an Americo-Liberian who used widespread hatred of Doe and ethnic tensions to mobilise support. Taylor had backing from Libya as well as the former French colonies of Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso, and he successfully exploited regional rivalries to divide a series of peacekeeping forces sent by West African nations - principally, Nigeria - in the mid-1990s.
A combination of brutality and bribery allowed Taylor to win presidential elections in 1997 with 75% of the vote. Key to Taylor's success was his control of much of the region's diamond trade and his constant shifts of alliances in the region.
To tighten his grip, Taylor sponsored an insurgency by the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) in neighbouring Sierra Leone. The RUF seized the former British colony's diamond mines and smuggled the gems to Liberia, where Taylor took a cut and top Western mining companies cashed in.
Like Taylor in Liberia, the RUF - known for amputating the limbs of its opponents - was brought into the government in Sierra Leone in 1999, with the blessing of neighbouring countries, as well as London and Washington. When the "power-sharing" deal threatened to unravel, a British-led contingent of some 13,000 United Nations (UN) peacekeepers moved in to prop up the government - while RUF leader and Taylor ally Foday Sankoh was awarded control of the ministry that controls diamonds. Taylor also backed a militia's attempted takeover of diamond mines in neighbouring Guinea, another former French colony.
The pattern is similar in Ivory Coast, where violence by Taylor-backed militias and an anti-immigrant backlash has effectively split the country between a mostly Muslim North and a Christian and animist South. Some 3,000 troops from France - the former colonial ruler of the country - are maintaining the status quo, leading some Ivorians to call for U.S. troops to replace them. Meanwhile, Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo has intervened in the Liberia civil war by sponsoring yet another militia - the Movement for Democracy in Liberia, or MODEL.
For its part, the U.S. has been reluctant to become directly involved in Liberia - but faces increased pressure to do so from United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Anan, whose native Ghana is a close U.S. ally and key player in the region. Even France, which opposed the U.S. war on Iraq, has called on Washington to intervene - despite their competing interests in the region - to keep the situation from spinning out of control.
The fact that the Liberian capital of Monrovia, a city of 1 million people, remains without running water or electricity has led many who opposed the war on Iraq to support a U.S. peacekeeping force on humanitarian grounds. But anyone who believes that Washington will act out of concern for innocent people in Liberia should take a closer look.
Until now, the U.S. has been content to pressure Taylor by working with the government of Guinea - which got $3 million in U.S. military aid last year - to support the main anti-Taylor rebel group, Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD). While Taylor has been indicted for war crimes by a United Nations tribunal, the LURD is little different.
"There is not one person who wields real power within the LURD who has clean hands or comes close," a European diplomat told the Washington Post. "The upper tiers are filled with the perpetrators of rape, looting and cannibalism." According to Human Rights Watch, LURD forces have been involved in kidnapping, summary executions, looting, rape and forced recruitment - and like Taylor and the RUF, use young boys as combatants.
So while Bush has called for the ouster of Taylor - who has provisionally accepted an offer of exile in Nigeria - Washington's solution is to replace one warlord with another. If the U.S. does move to intervene militarily, it's because Liberia sits near substantial oil reserves in the Gulf of Guinea. U.S. oil companies - including Exxon-Mobil and Chevron-Texaco - are expected to invest more than $10 billion in African oil this year.
At the same time, the New York Times has reported that Washington is moving to boost its military bases in "the Arab countries of northern Africa and in sub-Saharan Africa, through new basing agreements and training exercises intended to combat a growing terrorist threat in the region,". Add to this Washington's pursuit of free-market policies across Africa, and George W. Bush's real goals in Africa become all too clear.
So does the need to oppose them!

'JUDGMENT!' EXPOSES THE PHONY 'DEATH CAMP' PICTURES THAT FOOLED THE WORLD
In August 1992, millions of people were shocked by photographs of a supposed Bosnian Serb death camp.
The photos were produced by ITN, the British TV news giant, from footage shot by their film crew, which had spent a long day in Bosnia.
Most of the photographs featured a tall, thin man with a deformed chest, stripped to the waist, apparently imprisoned behind barbed wire. You probably saw those pictures, they re pumped at us from everywhere!
BUT THEY WERE STAGED AND DOCTORED: A HOAX!!
This is proved in the new Emperor's Clothes movie, 'JUDGMENT!'
To start with, the barbed wire was staged. The ITN film crew filmed from inside a storage area surrounded by a chicken wire/barbed wire fence - through the barbed wire - and in that way created the false impression that they were filming people imprisoned behind barbed wire.
And that was only their first cute trick. Step by step, 'JUDGMENT!' shows you exactly how the phoney pictures were created.
The phoney pictures were broadcast worldwide starting on August 6th.
PRESIDENT BUSH 1 RESPONDED WITH LIGHTNING SPEED
"Reports say that 20 minutes after the ITN footage was shown in the United States, President George Bush changed his hands-off policy and promised to 'press hard for quick passage' of a UN Security Council resolution authorising the use of force in the Balkans." The Straits Times, August 16, 1992
President Bush demanded that the Bosnian Serbs and the Republic of Serbia be harshly punished, including: "...tighten[ing] economic sanctions on Serbia so that all understand that there is a real price to be paid for the Serbian government's continued aggression."
He also announced the U.S. would recognize Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia as independent from Yugoslavia. Thus he used the phoney death camp photos as an excuse to endorse the break-up of Yugoslavia. By recognising the Bosnian government, run by the Islamic fundamentalist, Alijah Tzetbegovic, Bush guaranteed that the Bosnian war would continue.

Isn't it more likely that the timing of the broadcast of these pictures on TV was coordinated between ITN and the State Department / CIA? That Bush was put on TV right after the pictures so that ordinary people would believe that the pictures had compelled President Bush to act?
That ITN's trip to Bosnia in the first place, supposedly to "investigate claims that concentration camps had been set up" (Straits Times), was planned as a hunt for the right pictures to produce doctored evidence?

British officials vehemently deny that, when they published their September dossier, they knew anything about the forged Iraq-Niger correspondence on the sale of 500 tons of uranium oxide. They insist their assertion was based on other evidence from at least two western (but non-U.S.) intelligence services.
Their position is supported by a story in the March 22 Washington Post: “A Niger diplomat turned the letters over to Italian intelligence, which provided summaries of the information to Washington and London.”
THE KEY WORD IS “SUMMARIES.”
On July 9, a Reuters dispatch made the same point: “Italy's intelligence service circulated reports about the Niger documents - not the documents themselves - to other Western intelligence services, and that was apparently how the British and U.S. intelligence services learned of them, U.S. government sources said.”
Note the carefully worded Italian denial, issued July 13: “The news reported by various information organizations, national and foreign, concerning Italy's claimed transmission to other intelligence organizations of documents of Niger or Iraqi origin, conveying evidence relative to uranium transactions between Niger and Iraq are without any foundation.”
THIS NON-DENIAL DENIAL’S KEY PHRASE IS “DOCUMENTS OF NIGER OR IRAQI ORIGIN.” What SISMI transmitted were of ITALIAN origin - they were SISMI “summaries” based (how loosely we don’t know yet) on the info in the actual documents.
WHY THE BRITS BELIEVED
The Brits found the allegations in the “summaries” credible BECAUSE they never saw the actual documents. When Iraqi efforts to acquire uranium are described in a report from a trusted ally, and the readers are unaware the allegations are based on obvious forgeries, then, without a damn good reason for scepticism, they’d likely consider the Iraqis guilty until proven innocent.
SISMI went out of its way to lend credibility to the summaries by flattering the Brits and playing up what we might call Italy’s own “special relationship” with Britain: they were two European allies who, unlike the U.S. cowboys chomping at the bit, did not believe in early 2002 that war was the only solution to Iraq.
SISMI also boxed the Brits by insisting they not compare intelligence notes with the Yanks!! British officials concede as much in an important article by Richard Norton-Taylor in the July 14 Guardian:
“British intelligence sources said yesterday that MI6 had separate information [distinct from the forgeries] to back the claim. MI6 was provided the information by a third party which insisted that neither the source nor the intelligence could be passed on... Whitehall officials suggested yesterday that the claims came from a ‘close ally’“
THAT SOUND YOU HEAR IS SISMI PLAYING MI6 LIKE A VIOLIN. But who composed the tune? SISMI itself, without the politicians’ knowledge? Berlusconi? A U.S. Neo-conspirator?! Who wanted the Brits to believe in a uranium crock?
IS ITALIAN “INTELLIGENCE” IDIOTIC? OR INSIDIOUS?
The actual forged documents have now appeared in the Italian and U.S. media. As ABC’s Brian Ross reported July 16, “Among the many glaring errors evident in the documents . . . are the use of obsolete letterheads, incompatible dates and poorly forged signatures.”
SO WHAT ARE THE CHANCES SISMI’S INVESTIGATORS WERE FOOLED BY THIS RUBBISH? SLIM. It strains credulity to think they couldn’t figure out they were dealing with obvious forgeries (assuming they didn’t create them themselves).
And, if they considered them genuine, why didn’t they include photocopies along with the summaries? Wouldn’t that help a recipient agency conduct its own investigation?
If SISMI was cynically trying to persuade the Brits of an African Connection it knew or highly suspected was bogus, the smart thing would have been to lock up those laughable letters and distribute neatly typed “summaries” that excluded those “glaring errors.” Given the actual documents, MI5 would probably have taken the same 2 hours it took the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to conclude they were forgeries.
IS SISMI A MOSTLY RIGHTWING HOTBED IN A RIGHTWING GOVERNMENT? A source within SISMI told La Republica: “The Italian Foreign Ministry raised strong objections about the information provided by Italian intelligence.” Sounds just like the infighting among the Bush administration, where the cool, competent and powerless folks in the State Department’s intelligence bureau have been repeatedly stunned by the incredible nonsense passed off as truth by the superhawk neoconservatives.
Even if turns out that the SISMI leadership is both hawkish and sneaky, and indeed passed on to the Brits allegations it knew were groundless, IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE THAT SISMI WOULD DO THIS ON ITS OWN INITIATIVE.
THE BRITS’ & YANKS’ MYSTERIOUS “OTHER” SOURCES
So far, our focus has been on the primary British source, SISMI. But we know they had at least one other foreign intelligence source which provided the merest of “fragmentary” scraps perhaps another country’s agency (some recent speculation centres on France), or IT MAY SIMPLY HAVE BEEN A DIFFERENT BRANCH OF ITALIAN INTELLIGENCE.
In the weeks and months after the Niger Connection fell apart on March 7, various U.S. officials alluded to “untainted evidence” implicating Iraq in efforts to buy uranium from an African nation other than Niger. An official State Department response acknowledged that the U.S. source was a “second Western European government” (i.e., other than the British) that had “based its assessment on the evidence already available to the U.S. that was subsequently discredited” According to a “senior intelligence official” quoted in the July 8 Washington Post : “We both [the U.S. and U.K. had one source reporting through some liaison service. There were other [intelligence] reporting streams, but it may be that all streams are traced to the same source.”
WHY DID CIA FLUB CHANCE TO CLUE IN BRITS?
In early September the CIA did warn the Brits against including the uranium allegation in their soon-to-be-published dossier. But as Foreign Secretary Jack Straw commented July 12, “The US comment was unsupported by explanation and UK officials were confident the dossier's statement was based on reliable intelligence”
So the Brits left it in, believing erroneously they had secret evidence not privy to the Yanks! What the Brits didn’t know is that their trusty friends in SISMI had provided the same summaries to the Yanks, too! Nor did they know the U.S. had long ago concluded there was virtually no chance they were true. But because the CIA didn’t tell the Brits in early September, the Brits didn’t get a chance for a lightbulb moment when the light switches on and the MI6 agent says, “That sounds amazingly like the allegations we’ve been thinking are true, but unlike you Yanks, we didn’t check them out. We basically just took the word of our secret source. Please, CIA friend, tell me more.”
This “failure to communicate” is all the more astounding when one considers that the CIA officer who sits on the Brits’ Joint Intelligence Committee chose not to explain to the Brits WHY they should delete the uranium reference. That must surely be a matter for Congress to investigate.
And what to make of CIA director George Tenet? His agency did ask the Brits - however ineffectively and non-specifically - to not mention it in the dossier. And a few weeks later he got a similar line stricken from Bush’s October 7 address in Cincinnati. But he also breathed life into the allegations by mentioning it, albeit with caveats, in the classified National Intelligence Estimate of October - a document like the U.K.’s dodgy dossier, put out mainly to placate Democrats. It was read by members of Congress who shortly before had first learned about the Uranium Connection from a trusted ally asserting in a white paper that “there is intelligence” of such a Connection. That nuclear double-shot helped to persuade fence-sitters to give Bush a green light to wage war.
The net effect of Tenet’s conflicting actions was to give some legitimacy to allegations that deserved almost none.
QUESTIONS THAT REQUIRE ANSWERS
Determining the who, when, how and why of the preparation of these summaries - and whether “summaries” is a good description of what SISMI distributed - will go a long way toward determining if the Brits believed these materials or merely pretended to.
WHO? The summaries were presumably prepared by SISMI. Did they prepare them on their own? Did any non-Italians collaborate? If so, who? What was the nature of the collaboration?
WHY? Was the purpose of the summaries to accurately reflect the contents of the documents or to “sex them up”? At any point in their preparation phase did the preparers learn or suspect the allegations were false and the documents fake?
WHEN? Italian intelligence acquired the actual documents in late 2001. Only months later did they distribute the summaries. Why the delay? When Wilson revealed that he conducted his Niger investigation in “February 2002,” the British Foreign Office said it was some time after that that they received information on Iraq’s pursuit of African uranium from their sources. If that British info is correct, why the delay? Why not get the documents or summaries into British, U.S. or IAEA hands IMMEDIATELY?
It’s not clear when the U.S. received its copy of SISMI’s “summaries.” As soon as it did, did it alert our Italian ally that it was spreading bad information so that SISMI could alert the other recipients? Apparently not. Of course, there wouldn’t be any need to do so if spreading lies was the intent and the U.S. was in on the scheme.
Bob Woodward reported in the March 23, 2003 Washington Post that, in very early 2002, Bush “signed a secret intelligence order authorizing the CIA to undertake a comprehensive program to remove Hussein” If that covert campaign was anything like past ones to topple a foreign government, a significant component would be disinformation.

The U.S. Congress needs to put the right officials under oath and pose tough questions to determine if the Bush team used the Brits to deceive America about the nuclear threat from Iraq.
The British Parliament needs to determine if British intelligence were witting or unwitting participants.
The Italian Parliament needs to determine if their intelligence agents produced credible “summaries” or hyped and distorted ones; and if the latter is the case, did they do so on their own or in cahoots with elements of U.S. intelligence?
For intelligence officials in three countries, it could be a long, hot summer.
